An escape into mindless frivolity is necessary medicine every so often, don't you think?
You see, it seems that unbeknownst to me, this blog has been overtaken by the nature that makes up our parcel of land in the country ;) There are many many tales I spare you from. But in the past few weeks, I have had my fair share of mother nature tending to. Like doves getting their necks stuck in pin holes, trying to get more seed, more seeeeed!!! So, I have to save them, and sometimes, the outcome is not so rosy, yet more often than not, it is a good outcome and we all breathe a sigh of relief.
We have had helpers here working like crazy, we do this a couple times a year. Trimming trees, filling giant dumpsters with brush etc. etc. So, I took this as a perfect chance to escape into the wonderland (to me) of my in town house…
Where everything is over the top, and girls are free to be girls, to shameless extents. I ask you, don't we all need that sometimes?
Little faces that are part of my Russian Matryoska doll collection, greet us…
I am also greeted by my sister and her furry creature boy, Douglas. My sister Kristen (the Bobbypin Bandit) is the upstairs sprite and my partner in crime in the little city house adventures. She inhabits the sunny upstairs, which was the perfect place for me to go and play…
These are some snippets of her lovely space.
Anyhow, our frivolous fun started with these boots. As you know, I have no idea (I used to) what is "in or out." I just wear what I like, whether wrong or right 😉
My sister wears 1.5 – 2 shoe sizes bigger than me, darn darn darn!! But, these boots, fit her very small. She suggested they could be mine – AS I slipped my foot right in, she had to pry hers on like Cinderella's evil sister. The mad giggling amongst us, didn't help her getting the blasted thing on either…
I looooved them. I twirled and swoooooned…
Then, guess what? Yep, that lil' whippersnapper took them away from me. We tackled over them, I tried to make off with one of them, she held me down, "Giiiive meeeee thhheeee booooooooot…."
I lost.
I left bootless.
But not before we played with some of her shoes. Next time we'll do mine… We laughed and chatted, and carried on…
I wanted the peacock feathered platforms, but as you can imagine, she wouldn't part with them, and they didn't fit me anyway.
Oops, Blurrrrrry.
Wholey Guacamole, what about these bad boys? I put them on, mind you, I used to wear shoes this tall, now all I could say was, wowe wowe wooooooohhhhh, as I dragged them around…
Why is it so much fun to play in someone else's closet???
Oolala…
Lovely…
Funky fun…
I really really want these below…
Then, she started pulling out stuff from highschool. Some things you just can't part with…
Even her rainboots are fun!
But I ask, where on earth is she wearing these? Goodness knows, we don't get any rain around here, ever. Ever.
Oh, and I love how she includes gold dinosaurs in her decor 😉
Kristen let me take a photo of her wall, with her collection of The Black Apple and A Fanciful Twist prints. She gets brownie points for liking her sister's work without having to involve bribery 😉 (oh wait, I spy an AshleyG in there too)
I think she is the only person that has Hector Walks Astrid's Poodle on her wall :) (bottom left – little illustration I did about a real Hector). Plus some delightful AshleyG, and on the upper left, an amazing original paper cut gifted to her by her beyond talented friend Nadia, whom we scream at to open an etsy shop. NADIA!!! Open your shop, your papercuts rock!!
I tried to conjur up some magic with these over-sized ridiculous spectacles, but it was all too silly for words…
Then Mombie (my Mom) and Dadly arrived for a visit with Tacos and Easter baskets and doughnuts. I gave Mombie some streaks and coifed her hair. I streaked her hair with foils and all. I know how, I just am not a real hair dresser. Will she smack me for putting this up? (weird night lighting)
I played with some of my own shoes that I found in a box. The girl Mister Lovee met almost 10 years ago used to wear shoes like these all day to work (below). I was in my early to mid twenties. Pain was part of the package in shoe wearing, and I easily accepted it. Can you imagine???
They are higher and pointier seeming in person. I could never do it today. At 33, my view on pain and beauty has changed. A little pain is okay for an evening, but all day, no way… (my flip flops are already getting tanned onto my feet, oh no!! 😉
Thennnnn, the HBO movie of Grey Gardens came on. Dadly-o kept asking, where is Vanessa? Where is Vanessa? I was sitting on my bed, watching GG. Alas, I couldn't watch it all. I LOVE Drew Barrymore. I think she is amazing and delightful and charming. But, for 15 years, I have loved Little and Big Edie. And, I guess, I just didn't feel the vibe. I don't see them as they are portrayed in the movie, at all. And I don't see Big Edie as cold and stern as she comes across in the movie. So, it was a tough movie to be made, to satisfy the die hards. I don't know. I might watch it in the future.
I returned to the country to an over-night house guest and my duties as the mother nature of our little space in the world.
Baby rabbits turned up in a pile of brush going to the dump. I saw 3. One is hiding too hard for me to reach under some tires. These two were slower, seemed to need me…
I hollered for one of the men to lend me their gloves. I wanted to put them somewhere where the mama rabbit could find them, but I didn't want to leave my human scent on them. So, big man gloves were worn by me.
I cried. I couldn't help it. They inspired a deep emotion in me, these little guys.
I fell in love.
I am a rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac. I live surrounded by rabbits. Funny right?
I put these two guys safely tucked in a giant pile of twigs we have, where lots of rabbits and birds like to hang out.
I hope their Mama found them. Sniffle sniffle…
Now I am back in the studio. Back to work. So much to do, so much to do…
I am saying goodbye to this partial view out my double window for the summer. It will be 100' F this week. It is either that or no A/C in the studio. I will forgo part of my view for A/C any day ;)
When and if it rains, the ground out back is green and lovely. Monsoons are only a few months away…
Oh and, by the way, guess what my sister gave me after our play date? A bit of her vast Antique Mexican Earring collection. This pair of beauties. Thank you sister!!
So, there is my silly frivolous story for the day. Off I go, I have a long list to tend to…
🖤,V
ps: I netflixed The Divine Bette Midler. I just LOVE her! I watched it twice. We saw Ghengis Blues, I enjoyed it so much.
Right now I am watching the Illustration packed film called, Fear[s] of the Dark (not for kids). I am loving it.
pss: I checked on the rabbits 5,000 times. I think the Mama found them. I can't see them anymore…
psss: Have you seen the daily ditties at Wickedly Chic?? So much fun!!
Have a lovely, superb & terrific day!!!

Yes, it is amazing fun to play in someone else’s closet. Haha and the best friends are the ones you can swap clothes and shoes with :]
I love that first pair of rainboots your sister has, the one with the fish <3
We have quite the collection of Matryoshka at my house. Mainly because my mother's side of the family is mostly Russain. I love them. They're so elegant and pretty.
Oooh rabbits. The park by our house gets a lot of them, but they rarely wander into the housing areas in the city :[ but going to the parks and bringing some cut carrots and celery is wonderful fun <3
Oh V~
I just luv luv luv this post!! Those shoes are AMAZING. I loved the orange gingham and the red polka dot heels…to die for 🙂 I have to say my shoe collection is a bit drab as of late. I wish I could strut those shoes at work…oh the fun!! Along with the black spectacles of course 🙂
Have a bright lovely day!!
p.s. Your “in town house” is too gorgeous. I love decor and all the color!!
polkadot wellies!
eeeeeeeeeeep!
and i wear what i wear as well
which makes me happy
🙂
gorgeous joysmitten images as always in your
beautiful world:)
Your posts are always so bright and colorful they instantly cheer me up. I love your studio – mine is still stuck in the half-way done stage as other projects about the house have been far more pressing, but soon it will exist and I hope it is half as interesting as yours. Also – those poor baby bunnies – did you check on them?? I so hope they were okay. I love rabbits, too. In fact, anyone who visited my house would know – statues of rabbits outside and inside there are many, many rabbit figurines and pictures throughout. 😉 Thanks for cheering me up!
Nicki
Your sister’s closet looks like fun…
…and oh, those sweet bunnies. I know their mama had to find them…
what a fun post! I’m sure the bunnies are fine…btw… my Mom has that “exact” same pillow! the one that looks like it’s only half embroidered? exactly!
I love the shoes! I used to be such a shoe manic, until I had to have foot surgery and now, alas, I have to settle for flat shoes. Poo.
Do you have a studio in your in-town home?
I want your studio. Now. Right now.
I mean it.
So much prettiness, cuteness and shoes and babies! Oh my god oh my god it makes me want to play and run around.
You live quite a colorful life! Baby bunnies are so cute!
Oh, I want to come play with the shoes, too! I am soooo addicted, though stilettos & such don’t work well with this ol’ body anymore. But they are so pretty!! And the earrings your sister gave you – beautiful!
If you have a moment, come visit my blog, please. I gave you the Kreative Blog award today!
Thank you. Mindless frivolity is exactly what I needed this afternoon after a difficult day that brought me to tears. I love bunnies. We had many bunnies for years when the children were growing up. So many in fact that I made up song about them to the tune of the Brady Bunch…There was a bunny, and his name was mister, and before she died, he even had a sister. I will spare you the rest…**blows kisses** Deborah
Oh, I’m glad I don’t have to worry about the bunnies – I hope Mama bunny found them! What adorable shoes – how fun to have a sister!
what a fun day!
I sure miss my girlfriends back in California. I just spent last week there and got a taste, and now after seeing your post I want more girlfriend time!
thank you so much for sharing 🙂
~k
Oh how I wanted a sister when I was a little girl. Someone to play dress-up and Barbies with. But alas ~ I had one brother and he was 11 years my senior. Although, looking back, I have to admit he was way cool for a big brother. He worked for Fleetwood Mac at the time, and he would actually bring me to concerts and even bring me along to the offices in Hollywood where they did business.
I still wish I had a sister to play with and someone to give me a fabulous pair of Mexican earrings. I’m glad to be able to read about it here.
Thanks:
Kim

What fun! What did your Easter basket look like? Full of goodies, I’m sure! I sure do miss my sister and the fun of trying on clothes! My sister wears a size 5 shoe so we can’t share either! lol Lovely post…you are a lovely lady!
I’m a monkey!
I had a little Mother Nature Love as well. Come see my sweeties…or my friends sweeties that I fell in love with…

Oh I’d have a hayday with those shoes, they are lovely! Sounds like you ladies had some fun, yay! Thanks for sharing your sisters blog, love her header…I see creativity runs in the family, hehe. Glad you saved those cute bunnies Vanessa, you are too sweet!
Chat soon,
Jamie 🙂
…and yay for your Daily Ditties, hehe! I love that print!
Jamie 🙂
How much fun to play in a closet AND with bunnies!!!! Precious critters, those bun buns are!
Sending you big hugs, long lost BFF!
xoxo
oh I love this! Do more closet posts…..you and your sister’s clothes and shoes are so fun!
Thank you for saving the bunnies. My nickname is Rabbit cause I was born on Easter (today is my birthday this year though-yay!) So I love the bunnies!!!
The bandit has thee best shoes! I bet next time your in town you could be very stealth like & get those boots ; )
Those bun buns are soo squishy & sweet! SO glad you could save them!
I wouldn’t have been able to give up the Boticelli-art blouse either! *swoon* ‘;)
Ooooh! a sister AND bunnies??? no fair!!! Its so pretty there, always so sunny and full of color 🙂
oh wow – what a fun day! so many shoes, so little time. I am more in line with your current take on not necessarily enduring the pain of the high heels anymore. they say that the fat in the balls of your feet goes away as you get older. hm? i may have a theory as to its whereabouts. eek! :o) lovely day with your sis! and your in-town house looks so beautiful. thanks for sharing! and i’m so glad the bunny momma found her babies, or at least we will go with that. i’m sure she must have because after the 4,999th time you checked on them she said, “i better get my bunnies before that woman grabs them with those gloves again!” and in she swooped!!! and on your 5,000th look, *poof* they were gone!
My husband and I watched Ghengis Blues some years ago. We had recently met new friend who was a throat singer, so we rented the film. My husband (boyfriend at the time) decided he would learn to throat sing, and then several of his friends were trying it also. My husband learned to whistle on our first road trip together. He whistled all the way from Phoenix to San Diego. I believe it was our next trip to see family in California that he practiced throat singing the entire drive long. On a few occasions people have reminded him that he was learning to throat sing a while back. That can make for a really long week or so right after the thought is replanted. Thankfully interest runs it course pretty quickly with him and throat singing. :o)
I loved this post Vanessa- it gave me the warm and fuzzies! I was in Tucson for Easter and it was cool and beautiful and windy!
I’m sure Mama bunny took her little ones safely to their new home. I also would been worried about them too. I adore your sister’s headboard and those Mexican earrings. Those are my kind of earrings!!
I’m a rabbit too! Only not the same year. The baby bunnies are sooo cute. And I love the polka dot shoes.
Take care,
Tracy M.
My sister have bigger feet than me also, but luckily for me she once in a while buy shoes to small (often while thrifting) so they end up in my closet 🙂
After years of not buying any new clothes or shoes thinking that I had to be “perfect” before buying what I really wanted to wear, I finally started buying last year. It suddenly become clear to me that if I waited any longer I could actually go through my whole life never wearing beautiful clothes, shoes and jewellry. Stupid I know.
I have bought so many clothes and shoes since my “awakening” that I now have problems getting my wardrobe door closed, and I wear skirts or dresses every single day. It`s not even a problem playing outside in the snow with my kids while wearing a beautiful dress. I think I`m the only mother around here doing that 😀
What a spectacular post Miss Vanessa..so much fun and colour and oh everything!!
I have never ever seen rabbits that tiny, how special and I would have been doing all those visits checking on them too. Hopefully their Mother took them before it got dark…I have great vision of you trecking out with a torch looking for your baby rabbits….too cute!
Thanks for sharing,
Kiss Noises Linda
Such fun just reading about your play day! Your sister has great artistic taste. Those earrings are gorgeous! Lucky you! I, too, wondered about the rain boots in Tucson. But it does rain once in a blue moon, doesn’t it? As for the adorable bunnies, Jordana and I once rescued bunnies in the snow at my parents’ house, after the mommy bunny had got hit by a car. I love rabbits. There’s a guy in my neighbourhood who has a giant white one – as big as a dog – that he sometimes brings to the park (on a leash) to munch on the grass. Children go mad when they see it. And hooray for air-conditioning in the Arizona heat! I don’t know how you could think to create without AC. 🙂 xoxox
LOVE all these photos…. Your studio is just perfect – so bright and whimsical (one of these days I too hope to have a studio that doesn’t look like a complete explosion!)
And your sister’s print collection – just wonderful!!
Oh – and the baby bunnies just made me melt…I’m so happy Mama Bunny seems to have found them. 🙂
Have a magical rest of the week!
~ Carolee
Oh, how I wish I’d had a sister to play dress up with! (I don’t think my brother would have found it amusing at all. Heehee) And I simply MUST HAVE a pair of those pretty toile shoes! WHERE can I find some?!?
You are such a good Earth Mother to care for baby things the way you do. That gloved bunny pic is so sweet.
Happy sparkly day, Cyber-sister!
Hugs and kisses,
Kate
oh! So many lovely shoelings!! tee hee!! I just went through my own little pile of foot-clothes this weekend (Spring cleaning time….eeep!) And had to get rid of a nice pair of red flats as they had been smooshed beyond shoe-recognition at the bottom of the heap (bad me for keeping my little dears in a big box rather than on a nice show rack!!) 🙁
I hope your little stray rabbitlings have been found by their mama!! Poor little darlings!!
And 100 degrees!!! Oh dear oh dear!!
Not good weather for hot house blooms who need smelling salts! 😉
Shoes!! Bunnies!!! Oh dear! How very good and responsible of you to return them to a safe place… I would have been tempted to kidnap them, but I know that’s the wrong thing to do! Loveliness as always!
I’ve died and gone to shoe heaven!! Your sister’s closet looks like LOADS of fun. Those Mexican earrings are scrumptious!!
I used to think that I was a rabbit in the Chinese zodiac and then found out that the zodiac is not from the beginning of each month. Since I was born on the 18th of January, it actually makes me a tiger. But I LOVE rabbits. My heart just melted at your photos. I DO hope their momma found them and all is ok.
100 degrees? Ouch! I’m not ready for that yet!! Stay cool.
Happy Tuesday, Vanessa.
~Allie
I am absolutely swooning over those fantasy shoes! But at 40 I will agree that comfort trumps vanity any day. But for a night on the town or with the girls those shoes rock! Your sister sounds like a heap of fun. And your town pad is divine, much like you. Two sides of a charming life, my dear girl. Blessings to you and your sister. Enjoy the day! Erin
OK! I think you need to sneak into your sisters closet while she’s sleeping and make off with those divine boots…need help? I’ll be right there sneaking beside you :0!
I agree! We all need frivolity!!! On a daily basis!!! Thank you for yours, it made me smile and took me away for a short while. Hey, that rhymed. I know, girls/women are supposed to love shoes, but I’m not a shoe person BUT I have to say I LOVE those toile printed heels. Very cool, I’ll borrow them 🙂 And I loved that you saved the bunnies!!! I would do the same (and do from time to time). Thank you again, Vanessa!
Oh my gosh, Who wouldn’t love to play in THAT closet?
you do so much in a day and here I get tired just getting up to do story hour. if we ever make it to the az, you will run me ragged!
Shoes…treasures…flowers…bunnies!!!
Love it all:)
Hugs,
kayellen
my hubby saved a sparrow this last week.
He had gum all him.
Wish I could have captured to share:)
The sparrow had gum all over his face and feet…
He was the hero at work that day!
Hugs,
K
Welllll…first i was going to arm wrestle you for your dresser/mirror/curtains/chair/tree branch in picture 1, and then i decided to challenge you to an all 80s music dance marathon-while wearing either the red toile inset sparkly perfections or the red polka dot rhinestone cherries confections, but then i got distracted by the uber-cool wall of etsy and the way hecter is matted and the papercutting extravaganza (even edward scissorhands would be impressed!)….but then, being 2 steps ahead of me as always, you supplied preciousness personified in baby bunny pix…and then you finished me off with a lull into blissland with your country home studio…..
BUT THEN i totally got FREAKED RIGHT OUT by that picture of Blutch!! ACCCKKKK!!!!!
(shudder shudder whimper whimper)
Not for kids is right 🙂
xoxox roooo in the corner (cowering)
PS Did you hear that noise??????
Awww…looks like you and your sis had a great time. She can decorate so lovely just as you do, too.
And i’d cry at the baby bunnies being away from their mama too. I’m glad they found each other again, though. I was going to worry. Those cute little things….
I love your stories, they are great to read!
The shoe I liked most was that yellow plaid, very cute! Naninha, my cat came in once with a very baby bunny on her mouth, but I think she tought was her baby! She was protecting it! So funny. The bunny was by himself in that heat and I called those people from the city to rescue him. He was too small…they told me they would feed them and release it to the wild after some time! I hope they did!!!
I came across a rabbit hopping along my street six months ago, I tried to catch the sweet thing to no avail. The following morning I found dear rabbit munching on dandelions on my front lawn (lucky I’d not done any ‘weeding’ recently). Using a laundry basket I managed to catch and then transfer rabbit-y into a makeshift ‘hutch’. I then placed posters in the surrounding area in case the sweet bun was an escaped pet. In the meantime knowing nothing about rabbit keeping I googled madly only to find out they are best left indoors rather than cooped up (no kidding right?) and that they are easily toilet trained as it is within their nature to not spread their business around for fear of being sniffed out by predators. A few days later I pulled down the posters and figuring the local cats would get to rabbity if let loose, I decided to take my new pal to the vet who pronouned HER healthy and ‘not even a year old yet’ and make her part of the family. So, the point of my telling of this rabbit tale is to let all know that rabbits make wonderful pets. “Conundrum” the rabbit girl is friendly but not overly so, so when she let’s me cuddle her its not for long, making the cuddles even more special. Of course, I don’t advocate plucking them from the wild or buying them from a pet store. There are lots of rabbit rescue organisations just waiting for kindly persons to adopt a loving furry friend.
Hello? testing
We have a baby bunny at our house- named Lenny- a friend for our bigger bunny, Lewis. They loved hopping around our yard enjoying the mangos that drop from the trees. Yay for mango season and cute bunnies!
Sleepless in Bangkok, Candice
P.S. The shoes are super cute too- I love seeing other people’s cute shoes but I’m just not that brave myself- I value comfort in shoes too much.
No one is stealing those boots, you hear…. NO ONE!!! I sleep with one eye open!! Try it, and I will hang you on the wall next to the Black Apple prints! Just a little JOke. I hope you wear those Mexican Earrings everyday. It was difficult to part with them. Why do you think I left so early to get a drink with Melissa???
Your posts are always so cheerful and filled with whimsy. They bring a lift to my day!
I live in the CA high desert of Southern Cal, so I see lots of cotton tail bunnies. The babies are so cute. Fast thinking, of you, to pick them up with the gloves, so as, not to leave the human scent.
Thank You,
~elaine~
I need the ladybug boots! Can she mail them too me?
Oh, j’aime beaucoup toutes ces jolies mises en scènes photographiques !

Ooooh the shoes – the shoes! Love stopping by your blog for spectral inspiration.
VanessaPie!! Oh, I’ve missed you!
Hey. I remember wearing shoes like those! Yes! Not with all the fancies on them, but the high heels. ick!
You are so sweet to help those buns. I love bunbuns. I don’t care how mean they are or shy or that they are rodents. Because… I lvoe rodents! rats and mice and squirrels and bunbuns!!
I have had horrifying weeks! And I did NOT watch GG, because I was afraid to! I so fell in love with the videos you told me to watch and I watched and I loved, that I was afraid. So, there. I feel badly for people who watched that and didn’t know there was something better…
off to read more. I’ve miss your whimsy.
us girls can never have enough shoes! Love the heels too, but I couldn’t wear them all day either. I probally could swap with one of my sisters, but she lives in Nebraska! I’d love to hear Clinton Kelly and Stacey Londons opinion about the fun rain boots! (Love that show)! Sounds like you had a great day! Penny
