Only a Rose?

Well hello!  Remember me?  Betcha didn't know I was being held hostage by freaky + totally unusual wind storms?  I have had my power off about 6 times (for several hours at a time) in the last few days.

The lack of said power has left me to resort to the most complex delving into, of the most seemingly simple gifts of the earth…

Only a rose 11

Of course, I have been doing my duties of finishing deadlines, and house-keeping the country pad.  But with the huge gaplets of technological time missing, there have been spoonfuls of warm drippy syrup infusions of sweet nature…

I tip-toe through the petals asking myself questions like…

Only a rose 13

Isn't a rose beyond words?  The twists and turns of petals reaching for the light, as they slowly spin to life…

Only a rose 4

At the country house we are blessed with 4 astounding rose bushes.  Two with tree trunk like bases.  Blood red roses, coral roses, and light pink frosting roses.  At the city house I grow yellow roses and lavender roses that are so outrageously fragrant it is hard to believe that the scent is natural…

Only a rose 5

Roses.  Unreal gifts of nature.  I share some with different areas of my studio…

Only a rose 2a

They bring dream waves with them… Truly.

Only a rose 3

I spent so many years living a crazy fast paced life, that I think there was a bit too much of taking all the gifts of the earth for granted.  I am making up for it in spades, and reveling in every last petal and grain of dirt I can get my eyeballs on…

There are sooo many babies roaming around, of course, the quail eggs have not hatched yet or you would be seeing them.  But there are beautiful bouncing baby rabbits everywhere.

This one is so teeny tiny, but it is hard to tell in a photo…

Only a rose 8

I have been spending so much time with the birds, they are in constant party mode.  I took a couple of videos of them, I will share them soon…

Only a rose 9

The big guys migrated in from the East a couple of days ago…

Only a rose 12

I am trying to get used to my new camera (upgrade to my last Sony DSLR).  I had a little glitch, and accidentally & sadly never recorded 500 photos of a tea party I had early this week with friends and a day with Joyce where she made me a sublime dinner + cardinals flying all around me.  My new camera notifies full cards differently than the last.  Sooooo, you live and learn 😉

When I figured out the issue and fixed it, I was able to put myself in the thick of a three male, 1 female cardinal love triangle, and catch some fun photos.  Alas, not as exciting as the first lost batch.  But fun nonetheless…

Only a rose 23

Oh, and did I mention, our warm spring like weather had a visitor?  In the form of ice water and snow?  So you see, my insanity is simply a product of my climatic environment 😉

Today it is in the 60's F with an ice cold breeze, but guess what?  It is supposed to be 94' on Monday, WHAT?????  Wait am I talking about the weather?  How boring is that to you?  hahaha!

Of course, I have been humming a song that goes something like, Color of the sky, as far as I can see…

Only a rose 25

Soooo, what is a girl to do while waiting for her power to be restored?

Only a rose 20

I went on thriftventures and found nada.  I went to the drug store, in search of a nail color I longed for in my mind.  I bought 6, and liked two okay.  Alas, neither being the color I longed for, I resorted to mixing and layering colors until I got the color my soul needed ;)

Only a rose 6

I play a ton of piano, and did so even more while waiting.  I have two songs that are haunting my mind, so I am working on them.  One is almost done the other is still deciding whether it wants to bounce off fairy lights, or come fully to life…

Only a rose 7

Yesterday I almost fainted from fear.  I was reading, and dozed off.  Did I mention I am NOT a nap lover?  I wake up head-achey and sad and confused and irritated :)

Only a rose 19

So, there I am in my bed, yuckily napping, when I hear voices outside my window, and this gal is barking like a banshee…

Only a rose 24

So, I wake up freaked out, the wind whipping around so outrageously (not common here) that it is breaking huge things.  Now what you must know is that, we are wildly private.  The gates are always closed and latched, and chained shut.  For someone to be by my bedroom window, means, they removed the chain from the gate (which is not easy because it is latched from the inside), came in and walked all the way to the back of the property, YIKES!!!

I jump out of bed, find a shirt and shoes, my head throbbing, I run outside.  2 boys.  The Power Company, literally.  But why didn't they call my cell?  They have our numbers.  Alas, they were trying to figure out why our power keeps going out.  But then they started snooping around (or so my paranoid self thinks) and I got aggressive.  "EXCUSE ME?  Is there a problem?!?"

Oh no no, nothing they say, and they leave.  Realizing you do not access the power from our property.

Then 8 men 3 giant trucks and machinery arrives right next door at 11 p.m. to install a spacer on some wires that may have been hitting.  Now, why I ask, did they need so many men and so many trucks?  But then again, why should I care as long as I get my power turned back on?  They hung around, laughed and chatted A LOT, and then left garbage outside my front gate.  Starbucks etc.

But, I forgave them because really, they had the POWER to give me back power  ;)

Anyhow, after that bit of excitement earlier yesterday, I delved into the talent of others…  Anytime you need a pick me up, all you have to do is grab a package from your incredibly talented friend in South Africa, Gina Vee, and read her hilariously wonderful comics…

Or, have the mice from Lavender Dreamer Land sing you a song or two…

Only a rose 22

And while the mice were serenading us, I lost myself in my friend Maria-Thérèse beautiful work…

Only a rose 14

I love this image tucked into my blue mirror…

Only a rose 15

So there you have it.  Bits of where I have been in my powerless hours.  I can't believe you didn't try to rescue me ;)

Anyhow, now you know why I have not responded to e-mails etc.  But I will!!  I am a tad behind as you can imagine…

But I brought you this.  Does that count?

Only a rose 21

As for the Cascaron drawing.  Random number 99, from the proverbial hat, is the Cascaron winner!  Nicole Merkens, Yippeee, one happy cascaron for you!  I will try to make more cascarones to gift, they are so much fun!!

Only a rose 26

I best be off.  Must get back on track.  If you are interested, Grey Gardens the movie, will be on HBO this Saturday.  Drew Barrymore was on Fresh Air the other day talking about the movie a bit.  If you have not seen Grey Gardens the cult Documentary from the 70's, it isn't ever too late ;)  I have loved those two since I was 18 years old, and can't wait for Saturday.  Will I love it or hate it??  Eeeps!!

I saw the Reader and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  One part of this little household is Jewish, so these movies bring certain feelings etc. that make them not very sit down and enjoy kind of flicks.  But they were both very sad & compelling and had some tremendous acting to say the least.  This afternoon I am going to watch Hasta el Viento Tiene Miedo (the remake of the 1968 horror flick) - although it does have rotten reviews, as compared to the original, so we will see.

I am longing for more Jane Austen movies & Little Women like movies.  Movies like Practical Magic and Nannie Mcphee & Marie Antoinette (with the sets and costumes and color) and Fairytale and Legend  😉 :)  I think I will watch my VHS copy of The Little Princess for the 900th time…

See you soooooon!!

🖤,V

Beautiful roses! I am in the process of killing 4 very expensive plants I got last year. They’re dying a slow death, and they’re supposed to be so easy to grow. Hm? Not sure.
And, yes, I (and probably maaaaaaaaaany others) did wonder where you were! You were w/o power and we were without our Fanciful Twist fairyland fix! Heeeeeeee! Glad you’re back on line! :o) –Robin

  7. De'Anna says:

I was hoping you were just busy not held by storms. *yikes* Glad your back and Congrat’s to Nicole on winning the prize.
I love the bird and rose pics very pretty..such fun you seem to have 🙂
    De’Anna~

  8. Oh Vanessa, looks like you have “Goldfinch” in Arizona. I have them almost swarming here in Southern California. Although, I must admit, I hang thistle for them to snack on.
I’m glad you’re back. I think all of your readers agree that you are sorely missed when you don’t post.
I’m still in a wee bit of a slump, and my last blog post is a fairytale about my “garden slump”, so I must come to your blog to find my merriment and cheerfulness! And…I thank you for that.

Your blog is like reading several books at once! Absolutely LOVE that cardinal photo, and I can almost smell those roses from here – gorgeous!

  10. ~*a rose beyond words*~
    well, maybe,
    but
    what would you call
    the kitchen
    in Practical Magic?
    where they all dance around
after putting the lime in the coconut?
i wish i could call that kitchen MINE!
    🙂
    I want that Whole House
    from that movie…
    with electrical power
    or not,
    with magical power
    or not.
    oh yeah.

  11. So that is where you have been, skipping thru the roses in those pretty shoes.
While you are catching up, see if you can skip over and check out my French Faerie Party, I’m giving away sweet goodies, that were inspired by you!

glad to hear that you once again have power. i love when my power goes out. candles everywhere, darkness & mystery. i can’t wait for summer storms of dark skies and silvery rain.
i also can’t wait for MY roses to bloom.
    🙂

  13. tattingchic says:

Glad to see you back! That picture of the cardinal flying is absolutely fabulous! What beautiful photos! The baby bunny is so so sweet and adorable! Love your posts, doll! 🙂

  14. karen cox says:

    Vanessa,
Although the power was out, it seems that you used your time to create lovely images of your pink roses, and those movies sound perfect. Dreamy movies…hmmm have you ever watched The Ghost and Mrs. Muir? Now that you power is back, you can even watch it on You Tube. I adore that movie, it is soooo romantic.
I am about to travel down the path to those links to more heavenly inspiration. Have a lovely evening. P.S. I love that color nail polish.
    Karen

  15. Shell says:

I do adore roses, it must be a treat to have a whole bush on your property. The pictures of the birds are beautiful. You caught them in mid act. Maybe you’ll do a video with you playing the piano?

  16. ylva says:

and now i want lavender roses :). since our neighbourhood isn’t smelling pretty enough for me i’m looking for plants with a strong and pleasant smell. i hadn’r even heard of lavender roses before… but then again, i thought my mother and i were the only people in the world who can’t stand naps. i would love to love them (and sometimes i feel like i need them) but i feel awful waking up. just like you wrote.
anyway, absolutely lovely post (as usual).

  17. Nicole says:

beautiful post! I love your pictures. They are so whimsical 🙂

  18. I DREAM of making books like the girl’s of Practical Magic had their spells in….beautiful, ancient, layered and infused with magic. Yummy pretty.

  19. Di Overton says:

I live in the darkest place in England. Great for star gazing but when we have a power cut it is BLACK!

  20. Sorry you had to deal with power problems – and even more so with strangers lurking about! I hate it when I have to let strangers in.
We finally have the first tiny dots of glowing, shining, yellow tussilago flowers here in the north of Sweden! I was sooo thrilled to find them – and the first butterfly right nearby, last weekend.
What an amazing blue mirror! Makes my photos look even better 😉
Right now I want to visit you sooo bad and see the bunny baby and huge roses and everything. Better get to work – since you know all about my CSI dreams I can tell you this morning’s was worse: me working as a substitute teacher again in a messy classroom, trying to control 30 highschoolers who were supposed to do a test & not having the right papers with me.
    Let’s paint instead.

  21. Sarah says:

    Hi Miss Vanessa!
I was beginning to worry but here you are! It is so easy to take power and its friends water and food etc for granted and then it is scary when they go. Glad you got yours back now. I think men need to work in gangs on this kind of thing, some to do and some to watch the others and make comments. Don’t tell men I said so though! I love all the photos but my favourite is the little yellow bird on the purple flower. You have been surviving on flower power I have just realised!
    Sarah x

  22. sorry to hear about the power situation. nothing is worse than not knowing when it will be restored once it goes out.
that cardinal photo is AMAZING and those rose bushes are supernatural!!

  23. Julie says:

Um, this might be a bit off, but I love your shoes! Who are they made by?! Cheers, Julie

  24. carolee says:

Stunning roses! I sooooo love roses, and have a couple here called “Old Lincoln” – a deep crimson and very fragrant…But my favorite is a wild, climbing rose in the backyard…it fills the air with the most wonderful scent this time of year. 🙂
Have to add, OMG, I thought I was the only human on the planet (or at least among everyone I KNOW!) who hates naps!! Seriously, I can’t stand them – they always make me feel fuzzy, and guilty for wasting precious time. Like an hour or two of LIFE that I just squandered…..My husband and most of my friends think I’m crazy of course (they all LOVE naps – some as if it were an olympic sport, hehe)…But there it is – I don’t like them at all.
Besides, I figure soon enough we’ll all get to take a REALLY long nap, so I want to spend every single moment I have soaking up experiences rather than sleeping through them, hehe. 🙂
    ~ Carolee
PS – hope it’s OK, but I mentioned your recent post about not losing your inner child on my blog this morning – inspiring! 🙂

  25. Hello Miss Vanessa,
How wonderful roses you have! Fabulous!
And you really got awesome shots of creatures and nature. Loved it!

  26. marjorie says:

Oh!! What a wind storm ordeal!! I’m glad your power is back!! 🙂
Your rose pictures make me miss my old garden something horrible! (But in a good, magical way, of course!) 🙂 I used to have this beautiful, English rose bush just dripping with pink, tissue-wad like roses that smelled of heaven itself! And lavender growing underneath so happily! This was long ago at my parents house……now I am getting itchy to plant things in my own little bit of earth! I have seeds all ready to go….we are only waiting for the end of frost-season! tee hee!!
Happy magical weekendling to Youuuu! 🙂

  27. Kylee Ward says:

    V~
My goodness!! What a crazy week you seem to have had. I’m glad your back though!! Your roses are absolutely devine 🙂 I wish I had a green thumb and had some at my house which is quite lacking in greenery!!
I too am excited about Grey Gardens (although I haven’t yet seen the original but have plans to watch it this weekend).
Have a lovely Friday!! Glad your back!!
    Kylee

  28. wonderful news, and photos, and information … you get the prize for best post of the day – maybe the week!
I love your choices in films – we can go to the cinema together any day!
Oh – congrats to the winner of the cascaron!
…and that shot of the cardinal is fabulous!
if you can do all this with your power off, you must be a regular windmill of energy when it’s on!

  29. Cori. G says:

    Greetings my Fanciful friend!
Have you seen the movie “Orlando” with Tilda Swinton? Such a visual feast for hungry eyes and an interesting tale to say the least. It’s one of my fav’s!
I have to ask, is that Joey in the 9th picture fluttering his fanciful wings? What type of bird is he? He is so darling!
I simply love the word “gaplets” and must add it to my list of fun words.
    Have a lovely day!
    xoxox Cori

  30. Kristin says:

This is a wonderful post! Not that any of your others aren’t wonderful – because they are! Great photos and stories of your life! Thanks for sharing.

  31. Cyberdelia says:

Oh yes, Practical Magic! One of my all-time favs! Might have to watch it now. 🙂 And as a fellow Austen-ite, I gotta mention the gem I found recently…have you see Lost in Austen yet? It just came out on DVD on Tuesday. It was a BBC miniseries; it’s about a modern day girl who finds a door in her bathroom, and ends up switching places with Elizabeth of Pride & Prejudice! She mucks up the story as she tries to make it all turn out “like it’s supposed to.” It’s really fun & cute! Definitely gives you a dose of Austen when you are jonesing (as I usually am too hehe).
Happy you’re back and that the power fairies did their job! 🙂

  32. stephanie says:

Roses and birds of every make and model…you have such lovely colorful birds. I am lucky to see one sweet yellow bird, mostly brown hues to be found.
I am watching rain turn to snow and appreciate the liveliness of your world…thank you for THAT!!
    x…x

  33. Oh my goodness! We have had that wind too. It left me sneezing and sniffling. And Monday it’s supposed to be 95 here too!! Yikes! I’m not ready for that! I think I’ll go outside and enjoy the roses while I can. Your pink one is so pretty. It almost doesn’t look real?!
Anyway…I’m rambling! I’ve enjoyed my visit today..as always.

  34. Lisa Swifka says:

Ah yes roses, the look and fragrance like none other. We had a lovely crimson rose bush once and G thought he could move it….needless to say it didn’t survive. :sigh:
    Yours are beautiful!
Sounds like you made the best of the power outages, they are so annoying. I am so surprised with the wind we’ve had that we didn’t have at least one outage.
I agree with the movies you’re longing for….I so wish more money were spent to make films like those rather than slasher/horror movies I will never watch!
Tomorrow night, tomorrow night is the moment of truth for GG. I saw Jessica Lange interviewed on Ellen and Ellen herself admitted she had reservations about the movie but she saw it and said it’s scary how spot on they both are in the later years doing the documentary.
I can’t wait to see for myself!
Have a delicious weekend darling girl!
    XOXOXOXOXOXO

Thank you for bringing a breath of fresh air to my sometimes gloomy world. I love your blogs.
I often wondered about how you can do wonder around so freely on your property.. TO many people around me lol. Im sorry you got scared. I hate when people noise around I like my privacy.

  36. sarah says:

Watch Penelope, my dear. You will love it!

  37. What a fun post……and lovely photos! I’m glad to see how well the mice fit in there! They must feel like they are in a fairy tale…at long last! We are in Florida right now and our red roses are blooming like crazy! So I will send you a RED rose and happily accept your beautiful pink bloom! Happy Weekend, sweet friend! And congrats to the winner of the drawing! WHAT FUN!

  38. Mo'a says:

I can so relate to power problems. We had a spell when our power went out on a regular basis…especially when it was windy.
Then one windy day our neighborhood was filled with fire, emergency and power company trucks. The generator for out neighborhood had caused a fire in the woods…we actually live in the woods ;] Since then no problems…I am actually knocking wood as I say this.
Love your roses…you are lucky to have such wonderful roses in both places.
I love the cactus in the background of the rose bush photo.
I am back from my trip to Iceland and Denmark…reentry is hard but I am enjoying the warm weather and siting out in my garden as I write this.

  39. Thank you so much! I am so excited! You made my week! I absolutely adore it! Thank you , thank you , thank you.
    xo- Nicole

  40. Amy says:

    Oh all the wonderful pictures!!!
I know what you mean about the wind…my bedroom window was open a few nights ago, when the wind was at it’s worst in the city, and I thought the blinds were going to rip from the wall and fly off into oblivion. Of course they didn’t, but I thought they would.
The roses are so pretty. When I was little, in our old house, we had a few rose bushes…such lovely flowers.
Your piano is so pretty. I love piano. I play it too much I think…

  41. I am always transported into a magical land of beauty when I come to visit you. The lovely pictures and great colors.
The weather has been crazy off and on here too. But I do love the changes.

I love love love animals and you just serve my little girl lost in the magic fairytale woods and raised by cuddly animals a FEAST! That cardinal! However did you get him to hold that pose long enough for you to make sure all of your new camera settings were right? And bun-bun…i know you heard me sigh pure bliss when i saw little baby bunny. plus astounding roses, and glossy pale pink and blue (?) nail colours…what more could a girl ask for?
you are a little cloud of thoughtful happy -appreciating every petal and speck of dirt you can get your eyeball on-and then srpinkling magic shimmers onto us so we can do the same!

Hi! I have been loving your blog for about six months now… and I just thought that I had to leave you a message! Your blog is my home page whenever I start my internet… and I must say that it gives me such a creative boost whenever I see it! You have me totally curious about the layout of your studio… you have me believing that everywhere you go there are little fairies making your life absolutely beautiful… you have me believing that indeed anything is possible in this life! And to be honest that is exactly what I need to be believing in right about now! I have just started my own journey of having an online jewelry store and it is hard to be a total unknown! But I just keep looking at your blog and your beautiful creations and keep realizing over and over again that if you want something badly enough and if you keep being diligent about it… it can happen! But some days I must admit that I wish I could just click my heels three times and magically BE in Kansas!!! Thanks for helping me continue to follow my dreams even when you didn’t even know that you were!!! 🙂

  52. oohh, Miss V~ I love cascarones…my fav of all times!!!

Wowie, Missy. This was quite a post. I love what your new camera can do! That cardinal-in-flight shot is freaking AWESOME! And all those pretty roses and babies… lovely.
It looks like you put your “unplugged” time to good use – pretty nails, piano practice, and all that.
And now that you’ve mentioned one of my FAVORITE movies (Practical Magic), I’m singing “You put the lime in the coconut and drink ’em both up…” while kitchen dancing. Now you’ve done it! That song’s gonna be in my head all night! 😀
    xoxo,
    Kate

Spring has certainly brought all kinds of new life to your “neck of the woods”. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your bunny pictures!! It must smell so lovely in your yard with those beautiful roses blooming all around. Isn’t it amazing how one, sweet smelling bloom can erase all the “yuck” from around you and make you feel wonderful?
    Wishing you a delightful weekend…..

Your photos are balm for the soul, dear girl…. I adore the pink rose one…but also the cardinal, the bun-bun, the birdie, all of them…. thank you for sharing your talent with us… true love of your spirit and talents I am… :))

YOU are a pick-me-up dear V. Your blog is an inspiration and JOY to so many… I forecast that one day you’ll have more than Power Company boys sneaking inside your gate – you’ll have little pockets of bloggie fans gravitating to your enchanting middle-of-nowhere mecca to trip over rose petals, sniff that wonderful vassilating air with the bunnies, titter with the cardinals and hope and wish that maybe, just maybe, they’ll be invited in for tea with the FABULOUS Miss V!
    MANY THANKS!
PS – Practical Magic is my FAV movie – I’ve watched it 901 times! Oh and me and toddler have been watching Little Princess on video this week too! And he also LOVES Marie Antoinette which means I get to watch it 940 times too! You know what they’re like – always hogging the DVD player…
    xx

  62. Gillian says:

Oh yes, The Little Princess was so worn out, we bought the DVD. Now it too, is wearing out. Love that movie!
It would seem that magic is happening all around us however, not five minutes ago, I said hello to my cat that went missing last JULY.
He survived the entire winter outside. So, he wouldn’t talk to me but I was within two feet of his face and shreiked his name, “Jones! it’s mummy!!!”
He scooted under the fence. 😉
Is Jessica Tandy in Grey Gardens? Or Jessica Lange? It must be Lange, because isn’t Tandy…well you know.
Julian bought me a new blue bike last week-I told him he better lock it up or someone would steal it, and he laughed and said the only one who would is Jessica Tandy.
Oh boy did we giggle at that one. It has a lovely new white basket on the front too. 🙂
So glad you were able to escape the internet for a few days, it probably did you some good to hang out with the birds and bees of AZ.
    xoxo

Oh and you must must must add The Secret Garden to that list! My sister and I still love that movie…and we are 30 and 25 respectively.
It makes me so happy that I keep a copy of it saved on my tivo at all times. 🙂

Glad you got your power back! We have lost our power 4 days out of 7 for 2 hours each time. The winds wrecked havoc up here too. I thought I was back in Ohio as I listened to the wind whipping around the corners of the house.
Your Roses are beautiful. And we have a ton of baby rabbit as well. I’ve seen a lot of lizards as well. I can’t wait to see the Quail…I love how the babies pop up as they are walking through the grass…it cracks me up…looking like popcorn.
I saw about the last hour of Grey Gardens and enjoyed it a great deal. I had never heard of the story before.
    Have a beautiful week!

I have been so, so busy in my own little world – I’ve missed reading about your daily adventures! My roses are not yet in bloom here on the East Coast, but getting ready to, as are the Irises. The lilacs are in full, glorious bloom! =)
We love so many of the same movies – I just watched the Little Princess for the 1000th time! And just purchased the dvd version of Legend and Labyrinth (my little grandson has my VHS versions). I’ve also added Grey Gardens to my netflix queue! =)
We didn’t find any baby bunnies IN our yard this year, but they come into the yard from the wildlands behind us – as do the deer – a mamma, a buck and 2 babies!
We didn’t have the glorious apple pie that you had (teehee), but my hubby found a TO-DIE-FOR Chocolate Mousse, dark-chocolate covered strawberry several-layer cake, which we all devoured on Sunday evening after dinner! I want to go back and buy another one! =)
Also, thank you for the tutorial on the corsages – how lovely! I’m going to spend a bit of time playing and making some myself for my friends!
    Take care! Donna

Followed from one of the “here” s about your new office and my daughter who just got home from school is laughing because I have worn out some of the movies or replaced the movies you just listed above. I want my old house’s rooms someday to look like the rooms in Practical Magic. We just wore out A Little Princess. Love the lighting, fabrics, actors, magic of it. Well, could go on kindred girl but it is time to snuggle and talk about the day with the three school agers! Blessings.

  67. No one appreciates roses like our friend Christine. Whenever they come over she heads to our rose bushes.

  68. Interesting. Not sure what I expected when I cam to this site.

  69. Great to see someone love what they do!

  70. Never looked at it like this before? Guess it makes sense.
