Hello there + A Scary Allergic Reaction Tale

Hi there, I am just popping in ever so quickly….

Spring garden 15a

Matty is doing great, and almost back to normal.

(Thank you so much for all your kind thoughts for my little monster)

Some really scary things have happened around here in the last few days.

I was in the hospital twice.

Many of you know I never go to doctors.

Ever.

And, for me to go the hospital has to be a matter of life and death…

I think I was 5 years old the last time I had to be a patient in a hospital.

Spring garden 13a

We are almost done with shop orders, Mister is helping me, and they are almost set to leave here.

So, please don't worry.

They are on their way without a hitch.

(ps:  All orders have been shipped, yay!)

I really wanted to pop in and share what has been going on.

You see…

I had a scary allergic reaction to something…

I started feeling a bit itchy on Thursday, and I thought I had some funny bites on me here and there.

By Friday I had hives all over my torso, but they subsided Saturday morning.

My sis came over Saturday, I felt fine, but little by little the hives came back.

By Saturday evening they had exploded all over my body.

All of a sudden…

I could not breathe, I could not communicate.

I could not think.

Everything was black and white, I couldn't see in color.

I kept blinking trying to see in color.

I didn't know who I was or what was happening.

I was shaking madly, throwing up and I was rushed to the hospital Saturday night.

Through total fogginess of my brain, in the car I pulled out every bit of what I had to pray and pray and beg to not die.

Everything seemed soooo foggy and unclear, and through my body shaking madly all I could say was please God, please God, please God, please.

I was so scared.

I felt like my life was slipping out from under me, not being able to breathe.

And…

I thought I was going to die.

I truly did.

It was so scary.

The car ride to emergency felt so long.

I remember thinking, what is happening to me?

What is happening to me?

I was shaking uncontrollably, and heaving for breath.

When I got into the hospital I could hardly communicate anything.

I was babbling this and that.

It was like a total out of body experience.

I was having anaphylactic shock, and my throat was closing in.

What was happening is that –

I was having an allergic reaction to something.

They filled me up with meds at the hospital and got me out of the scary anaphylactic shock phase.  I felt better after a few hours, and went home.

Hospital

I was sent home with meds, steroids to keep me from going into anaphylactic shock again, and an EpiPen, just in case.

I have no idea what caused this.

A bug bite, something I ate?

Who knows.

I can't figure it out.

Sunday morning I felt great, all hives were gone, and my parents came to visit.

I didn't have a hive on me.

I went to bed at 8:30 p.m..

At 11:00 p.m. or so last night, I woke up unable to breathe again, shaking, and throwing up, with new hives.

Mister Lovee drove me back to the hospital.

They gave me more meds to reduce the hives etc.

I was shaking like a leaf, so weird.

Basically, whatever caused this allergy has to work its way out says the doc.

It could take a week or two, or mere days.

At some points I am so itchy from the hives, I could scream.

I have never felt so low, or so gripped by something so awful.

When it gets bad, I feel out of control and constantly itchy in the center of my being, to the outside.

It's almost like going totally crazy.

At some points huge 5 inch hives cover me, itching all over inside and out.

Even my organs itch and hurt.

Then it subsides.

Then it returns.

Then it subsides again.

I keep trying to think about what I ate that could have caused this?

I did eat a couple things out of the ordinary.

What did I do, what was different?

I did see some strange bites on me when it all began.

And, I was deep in the parsley and tomatoes trying to stand it all up, as it was so tall.

I also was washing 2 kinds of bugs off of sunflower leaves one by one with dish-soap.

Who knows?

It is a total mystery to me.

It could have been anything.

Have you ever had an allergic reaction as such?

How long did it last?

Did you find out what it was?

How?

I am on a bland diet now, just in case.

Spring garden 30a

Today started out not so good, and has gotten to be a better day so far.

I was switched off of Benadryl last night to reduce the itchiness, as I found it exacerbating the issue.

The new ant-itch meds have helped greatly.

I got 5 hours of sleep today after taking the new meds, finally, some rest.

I think the Benadryl was making me worse.

At this very second all the hives I had this morning are gone.

But they come and go.

All I can do is hope for the best right now.

I have my steroids, my pills to reduce the hives and my EpiPens in case of an emergency.

The Doc said I will get allergic hives off and on until this thing runs its course.

The doctor looked at Mister Lovee last night and said, you have to know she is suffering.

Boy am I ever.

BUT,

I hope and pray to be back to normal soon.

So soon, I hope and hope and pray.

This is just an allergic reaction my body is having to something I ate, or something that bit me.

All parcels will leave here in a couple of days.

(All parcels have left the building)

I promise.

I guess my tale wasn't so quick 🙂

Love, Vanessa

  1. Jenn says:

Oh my gosh Vanessa! That is so scary! I hope you feel alright now, though the mind blurriness sounds like hell. I hate that you don’t know what it was. I pray that it never happens to you again. We need you around in this world.
I’ve had the flu the past few days but haven’t been in any dangerous scary zones. I also am allergic to what we are thinking is the sun. I break out in massive amounts of rash on my chest, arms, back and stomach. I have a doctor’s appointment next week to find out.
Hope you feel well now my love, and please do take it easy!

  2. karenleigh says:

Oh, how scary! So sorry for you. Sending lots of good thoughts and prayers that you are all better soon.

  3. Melanie says:

Oh….my….gosh!!! I thought you’ve been absent from the blog because of Matty. When it rains, it pours!!! How perfectly dreadful, awful and scary for you! You are such a beautiful soul and you have had to go through so much – spells of vertigo and now this. I pray you figure out what has caused this so you can at least avoid it in the future. Oh, Vanessa – I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through this. Please be careful. Much love and hugs to you and Mr. Lovee, who must feel like a wrung out rag by now!

  4. Cameron says:

Oh, I hope it was some rare thing and not going to happen again! I’m so sorry!!

  5. Nathalie Gagnon says:

Oh Vanessa….I am sending you positive vibes. What a nightmare! I was getting so worried when you were so quiet on your blog. I wish you the speediest of total recovery! ((HUGS))

  6. Cat says:

Oh hon that is way scary!!! I had the experience a few years ago. I know what you mean about the shaking. The whole episode was absolutely horrible. The only thing I can say is thankfully I was at my doctors which is two blocks from the hospital when it hit. Mine was due to an allergy shot. I stayed a few minutes to talk with the nurse, Thank God! because I looked at her and said ‘why do I feel funny.’ She immediately sat me down and started calling in the doctor. It got worse from there. I had to spend the night in the hospital because my vitals wouldn’t come back to normal after the shot.
I hope your series ends soon.
    Lots of hugs!!!!

  7. Tina says:

    Gracious, mon ami!
I will pray you will be better ASAP!
Your intense itching n such reminded me of when my daughter got shingles this past year at age 27…please be sure the dr. ruled this out.

  8. Jessica says:

As I can relate to your scary hospital adventures (though I was hospitalized not because of a severe allergic reaction, but because of two broken arms) I can definitely empathize with the experience. I hope you are feeling better soon and that the hives stay away. For some reason…well, I don’t know if this is meant to be or not or what, but have you ever read The Fault in our Stars? It seriously reminds me of your situation right now. I just started reading it last night about 11, and am almost done. Very interesting.
Don’t worry about the parcels, they can wait until you’re better. I’m sending prayers your way, love!

  9. Janel says:

Sending some healing wishes and prayers your way sweet Vanessa! How scary for you! I hope you find out what it is really soon!

  10. Retta says:

That sounds really really frightening! I hope it’s over for you, and nothing like that happens ever again! Sending well wishes your way.

  11. Chelsy says:

Oh my goodness oh my goodness! Poor Vanessa. I’be been worrying like mad about Matty, hoping he wasn’t the cause of your absence. I’m so glad he his well, caring over your home. But poor you! I can’t believe it! I’m so glad Mister was there with you, taking care of you, it could have ended so differently. I’m so glad you are still here, recovering, breathing in and out.
I feel the same way about Dr.’s, hospitals, medications… At least I did until my (then) 3 year old developed a nasty, heavy case of pneumonia after being sick for a week. We thought she was finally getting better, wanted to go outside and ride her tricycle and then- CRASH. She just lyed on the couch, couldn’t sleep, but couldn’t move. Her ocygen levels were dangerously low. So scary! I’m so grateful now for modern medicine. When necessary it really does save lives.
I’m so grateful that you are alive, Vanessa. You are a shining beacon in this crazy world, reminding us, reminding me, which way to go. I’ve never met you, but I do love you.
I’ve never had an allergic reaction, but my daughter has (same daughter- she’s a sensitive one). Like you probably do I felt I HAD to know what caused it, but the doctor said even after tests and tests they rarely figure out what it was. For her, it was just hives, they came one by one and as each one faded a new one popped up. By the time we got to the Dr, they were gone. She had a low-grade fever and that was about it- thank goodness.
I will be praying for your speedy recovery, and thanking God you are still here.

  12. Bec says:

I’m extremely sensitive to chlorine and dryer sheets/fabric softener. If I go for a swim and don’t immediately shower and rinse off really good, I end up with hives. Dryer sheets/fabric softener are banned from our house. I still end up with mystery hives that last for a few days every once in a while! I’ve never gone into full allergic shock, though, so not quite as miserable as it sounds like you’ve been! I hope it goes away soon and you can get some rest. I’m glad Matty is better too!

  13. pami says:

Recently, I was diagnosed with a soy allergy. Soy is in everything, soybean oil, soy flour, etc., basically anything with any kind of flour or oil. I had to switch my diet so much, but I feel much, much better. Did they do an allergy test on you? They can test your skin or blood. Good luck figuring this out! It’s scary!

  14. Maia says:

Dear Vanessa, I’m sending many good wishes to you for a fast recovery.
I love reading your blog and always look for a quiet time when I can enjoy it. You bring so much happiness, I hope you will be yourself again soon. 🙂
P.S. I loved the post about being yourself, my problem right now is how do you find yourself?

  15. Becca C. says:

Very scary, but I’m glad you are doing better! Much healing energy being sent your way!

  16. Kim says:

Thinking of you Vanessa, and wishing for you to be better soon!!!
    Lots of love!
    Kim@Bonne Nuit Designs

  17. Linda Diane says:

Oh, my goodness, Vanessa! I thank the Lord that you are OK!! Please please take care of yourself, and do not worry about getting out orders when you are so sick! YOU are the priority here, sweet lady.
My husband and I have both had allergic reactions to things, but nothing this bad! Wow, it was scary just reading this. Bless your heart. I pray that this will all settle down very soon with no repeat performances.
This is where I give you the biggest cyber hug possible!!!

  18. Oh you dear sweet girl… How frightening! And to not know what caused it! It feels so awful when things are out of our control! I hope you are able to learn what prompted it so you can avoid such a miserable occurrence. I will send you lots of love and light and think of you when I pray. Lots of furry love (though lets keep it via the internet so we don’t cause another allergic reaction!!!).
    Tricia

  19. Jill James says:

    Vanessa……please take care of yourself……
Everyone who reads your blog only cares about you (not our orders)
Please put my order at the end of the list ~
Hopefully, you will find out what caused this.
    Much Love to you……

  20. Renee says:

I’m so glad you are getting better. How scary. That must have been a horrible feeling.
Benadryl does the same thing to me, keeps me up and has the opposite effect. But it works great on some people. We give a lot of it where I work.
Sometimes you are will have an allergic reaction to something the first time you are exposed to it but most of the time it is with repeated exposure. Your body responds to the “foreign object”. Could the bites have been bee stings? I hope you are able to figure out what it is and avoid it.
One of my nieces has a severe peanut allergy so she always has an epi pen. When she comes here I peanut proof my home and buy the foods I know she can safely eat Pizza, veggies, fruit and Oreos:) Her mom was terrified to send her to school but now that she is older she knows how to avoid things, read labels, etc.
I really hope it is out of your system soon. (I have seen that happen before-repeated reactions over several days)
Glad you are okay and glad you have Mr. Lovey to take such good care of you.

  21. lynn legge says:

vanessa i am so sorry you have gone through this. . it is a very very scarey thing.. i know it has happened to me twice.. and like you.. out of the blue…. nothing new to eat.. drink..etc..
please always have benadryl on hand… and of course your epi pen.. i have that always and take it whenever we are going to be any time away from home.. the doctors at the er.. when i had to be taken by ambulance last time.. told me it could very well be just anything in the air.. something that you touched.. and there are times that we will never know what caused the reaction.. its a frightening thing.. to worry about not breathing.. and not know what to avoid..
please know you are in my thoughts and prayers..
and thanks to mr lovey for being so good a husband .. i know im blessed with a wonderful man of over 37 years myself 🙂
    big ladybug hugs
    lynn

  22. G.G. Pinkster says:

    Oh my goshee…
My BFF in L.A. had a similar thing happen to her
    This spring.
How and why are the big questions!!!?
How madly odd that 2 of my favorites have been
Shooken and hived inside and out.
    Different reasons yet similar reactions.
Hers was from flower scents all around,
ANd she was worried about her brother
Who got in an accident (and she remembering her papas death)
    You who’s doggie was down,
ANd you were so worried cuz of Baby
In the back of your mind.
And she surrounded by flowers bloom
ANd all the sudden hives, throw up,yikes spinning round.
All around, scary times similar sounds.
Images of sensitivity and strong scents around.
Wishes to you of rest and sleep sound.
Your gentle sweet fairies are singing around:
    Vanessa, Vanessa you are home,
Safe and sweet good health ringing
    Puppy dogs love bringing you
All love today, Me Lovee warding off fears all the way.

  23. Lynn, Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Question…I had
a really bad reaction to the Benadryl, and only started to feel a little bitter
when switched to Hydroxyzine. Have you ever had a problem with
    Benadryl??

  24. Terri says:

I’ve had hives a few times through the years (though thankfully never so severe as what you’ve been going through, poor dear!) and each time, I never could identify what exactly I ate/touched/was bit by or whatever – that caused them. Thankfully each time they went away after only a day or two of benadryl and applying calamine lotion (also I think I remember putting baking soda in the bathwater helped give a little relief too). I do remember that itchiness feeling was horrible and felt very out of it till they went away. For what it’s worth – from years of gardening, even if not allergic to them – tomato plants can be very itchy to the skin, so it might be worthwhile to ask someone else to care for them for you, just to be on the safe side (they are in the nightshade family and the green parts are fairly toxic – to just about everything except tomato hornworms, of course).
Sending good thoughts your way for quick healing and no recurrences. Take good care of you and get well soon!

  25. Terri says:

p.s. Just thought of something else – I just realized I do TOO know what caused at least the very first case of hives when I was a little girl. My mother changed washing detergents and we ALL got them. We never used that brand again. Thought I’d mention that as I remembered you saying something about them recurring after going to bed, so perhaps something in/on the sheets? Anyway, hope you’re able to avoid whatever it may be…
Wishing you loads of good luck and good health!

  26. Vanessa:
I feel like I can’t breathe just reading this. I am glad that your family got you to the hospital so quickly. Allergic reactions are so scary because they are so unpredictable.
My oldest son is allergic to sesame seeds. He gets hives and his lips swell terribly even from just a couple of seeds. We always have an Epi Pen on hand just in case.
I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
    Kim
    Gerushia’s New World

  27. Terri, I thought about that too…. I didnt switch soaps… but my soap
box looks different, so maybe they changed their formula??? yikes.. so
much to think about.. my mind goes crazy thinking about everything I ate and
touched…… But mostly, the bites I had as this occurred keep telling me
it might have been a spider(s)?

  28. Kelly says:

OHHH Miss Vanessa, HOW SCARY for YOU and Mr. Lovee. I have been checking often to see what has been going on with Matty and now I see you have had your own health issues! Yikes girl, what is going on in your Bizarre AZ? What a BIZARRE mystery! I hope you rest comfortably tonight and know I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. <3

  29. linnea-maria says:

Oh godness! Thank god you made it to the doctor in time. When you have get well from the hives maybe you can do an allergy test? You must investigate what exactly you got the reaction from, because next time you might not have the time to go to the doctor (thank god for the epipen). It would be easier to avoid the hives if you know what causes it.
My son was 3 years old when he got an anaphylactic shock. I was the only one around who understood the seriousness in it, it was horrible to have to beg for a ride to the hospital, while he were almost fainting and wispered, mama, trying to breathe. I get mad everytime I think about it. Take care of yourself and be aware of what you are eating. Hugs /Therese

  30. oh vanessa, hugs winging their way form over the water 🙁 how terribly scary. looks like terri got in there before me, I was going to mention about the tomatos too. I’m asuming it is very hot out there now and plenty of bare skin for tomato leaves to be in contact with. They and potato leaves I am always cautious with.
Everytime I think wouldn’t it be nice to live some where hot like Arizona, and have pretty flowers all year round, I just have to think of snakes and bitey poisous things and wild animals, the most dangerous animals we have on our Island is the Orkney vole lol.

  31. Karin says:

Oh dear girl, please take good care of yourself. I am sure everything will be allright in the end, you just have to, there is no other option, but right now it’s terrible that you are suffering. I wish you lots of strength. Big (careful) hugs.

  32. Katarina says:

Oh dear! What a story, what a scare 🙁
I read your blog all the time but rarely comment. This time however, I had to. I’m glad to hear that you and Matty are both doing better. Allergies can truly be random and scary.
Maybe thinking about your upcoming (?) Tea Party can get you in better spirits..? I know I am looking forward to it 🙂
    Feel better!

  33. Bronwyn says:

VV, please keep away from the parsley & tomatoes & their accompanying bugs! You don’t have any stinging nettles in the garden, do you?

  34. Betsy Bailey says:

I have had bad allergic reactions, but never to that degree. I can only imagine how scary that was for you.
Keep taking care of yourself and I will send lots of healing energy your way.
    <3 Betsy

  35. Miss Linda says:

Very scary indeed. I know that Mr. Lovee and the furry ones are taking good care of you. Please be safe in whatever you do, be careful what you eat….and do everything the Dr’s and family tell you to do.
Hope you get your energy back soon. Please take care and be safe.

  36. oliveappleby says:

oh darling Vanessa, how absolutely terrifying for you and Mister Lovee and the boys. Hives are evil, when I get them (just any reason really) I just cover myself with camomille lotion and boy does it feel good. So cool and soothing. Just take care of yourself and be kind to yourself too. lots of positive thoughts and love….Olive xxxx

  37. Monica Davis says:

Sweet Vanessa–here is so hoping and praying that today is a good hive day–how horribly awful and scary!!!! I know my sweet dad had that kind of life or death experience after eating shrimp!–he could remember only one other time he felt like that-it was also after eating shrimp. Best for you to get rest –Have a great week.

  38. Vanessa—see an accupuncturist–and Google ALCAT–it is a blood test for food allergies-and email me asap. I’ve not been as sick as you–but I have a ton of allergies and we’ve gone through heck and back-and tons of traditional drs (who didn;t help btw)–and self-diagnosed–and through simple changes, almost cured me!!! Lots to share—Hang in there! Thoughts and prayers! Blessings, Sharon

  39. ohhh goodness Ms V…that is terribly scary…my mom went through anaphylactic shock (4yrs ago)…it was so scary. Like you had said, her WHOLE body (inside and out) was itching uncontrollably, she couldn’t breath, she couldn’t think..ect..it took around 2-3 weeks for her to get back to completely normal again..
please take it easy and be careful, and recover well..Ill keep you in my thoughts and prayers..

  40. Leslie Cohoon says:

Holy Cow!!!! So so so sorry that you had to go through such a scary experience! I can’t even imagine how that must have felt. So happy to hear that you are feeling much better! I pray that you will have a full speedy recovery!
    love n hugs!

  41. Kathy says:

What a horrible experience. I have allergy induced asthma. Not being able to breathe is bad enough. But then, you get scared and it makes it oh, so much worse. My heart went out to you just reading this. Scary stuff. You’d think if it was spider bites you’d be able to see the bites. Spiders leave nasty marks most times. The steroids help a lot. But, they can make you feel a bit loopy. Or a lot loopy. Just know that is something that comes with the territory. Keep us posted. We are all worried about you. Take care. – Kathy

  42. incredimombo says:

Oh, I’m so sorry. That sounds scary and miserable all mixed in to one. A nasty bug bite makes sense to me – like a spider, but I just happened to be looking at this article posted just this am before switching to your blog so I have to send the link. http://charlotte.cbslocal.com/2012/05/28/new-species-of-ticks-spreading-disease-across-southeast/
Hope you identify the culprit so you never have to go thru this again…

  43. Kathy says:

Bless your heart, I have never experienced anything that bad but my heart goes out to you. What pain and discomfort I can only imagine. I said a little prayer for you and will be sending you good thoughts for a speedy recovery. Kathy

  44. Lisa says:

Oh how scary! I hope you are feeling back to normal very soon and this never happens again. Wow.

  45. Allison says:

I’ve only commented on your blog a few times, but I felt that I had to send you well wishes! I am sorry that you are going through this, and I hope that you feel better soon! I am currently dealing with the same thing (With the huge itchy hives all over the body that come and go). Mine is connected to diet because part of my G.I. tract is inflamed. I was first on steroids a few times, and now benadryl. Putting some ice packs on the hives and cool showers help greatly with the itchyness. I wish you relief from this asap!

  46. Heather Williams says:

Many healing vibes flooding your way & washing over you, Vanessa….may your skin, body, & mind find comfort free of any itchiness/pain/worry, may you be able to continue to breathe easy & effortlessly…& may you be guided, beyond a shadow~of~a~doubt, to know what triggered your reaction! Thank you! Be gentle & take care ~H🖤~

  47. oh, vanessa! i am sooooooo glad you are ok!!! there is nothing scarier than an allergic reaction…and when you are trying to figure out WHAT is causing it…so frustrating!!
i am allergic to several things….penicillin will kill me if i take it. i’m allergic to the oil ylang ylang (it gives me massive itchy hives) and i have to be careful whenever i buy perfume or bath gel – which means i only wear 1 perfume and use hypo allergenic soaps.
but, the real kicker is that i found out the hard way this past december that am allergic to ALL STEROIDS!!! ALL OF THEM!! i thought i was going to die when my doctor gave me prednisone for an ear infection – my blood pressure shot up waaay high, my blood sugar went way low; i was so dizzy and woozy i had to hold on to the walls in the apartment to walk. i worked at my day job during all of this even though i couldn’t drive and could barely stand up. i couldn’t eat. i was sick to my stomach. i couldn’t think. i thought i was going to have a stroke and die. what was the scariest part for me was that my doctor wasn’t listening to me that i was having an allergic reaction. my pharmacists had to diagnose it. then i was given another steroid by another doctor 3 months later – even though i told him about the prednisone- and, well,,,,, it’s be almost 7 months since the original bout and 3 since the second dose and i am still having side effects…they aren’t bad, but i still notice them. mainly i have all these little pimply bumps on my back, chest, and scalp. it does take a while for whatever you are allergic to to work it’s way out….and i think for those of us who rarely go to the doctor, it’s worse…
i hope you start to feel better very very soon. it’s hard to be patient when it feels like nothing will change…but it will!! and as far as figuring it out what caused it…it could be one thing or several things combining to give the reaction you had.
i’m just so glad you are ok and the doctors were able to help you!!! just be slow and patient with yourself and let your body heal up!!!

  48. Meg says:

Sweet pea, I was worried when there was no post for a number of days.
I’m glad to know that Matty’s on the mend, and grateful that there was help and a hospital close by for you.
I once experienced a life-threatening allergic reaction, and my heart goes out to you. It’s a desperately frightening thing to go through.
If I’d known about energy work at the time, I could have saved myself a horrible 2 years of just letting it “work its way out of my system”. My doctors were great with what they knew, but their knowledge unfortunately went only so far.
I won’t take up space with details here, but please feel free to email me if you’d like information about the solutions I arrived at.
Hugs and wishes for wonderful health & happiness for all in Fanciful, AZ

  49. Dana Laviano says:

My daughter went through something like this only a few months ago but we traced it to the antibiotics she was prescribed (she’s allergic to penicillin, amoxicillin and any derivative thereof but the substitute pediatrician apparently didn’t know the one he prescribed was made from the same base as penicillin. After several emergency room visits and a week’s worth of hives blooming and receding it was finally over. But she was in terrible pain and could barely move! I’m sorry that happened to you. I hope you sort out what did it so you can avoid a repeat of the event.
    Get better soon!
    Cheers

  50. Wendy says:

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, Vanessa. I’m thinking about you and sending you hugs and well wishes. Take good care of yourself.

  53. Stephanie L says:

Wow! I have been going through something similar. No anaphylactis (thank goodness). I awoke to a horrible itch on my hand about three weeks ago, scratched it, got a hive, but eventually went away. My dog licked my arm got a hive, went away. A week later my hand started itching (Mothers’ Day evening. I went to bed and woke up at 3:30 with my hand so swollen I couldn’t move my fingers. Went to the ER and had to get my wedding ring cut off. They gave me some shots and said I had an allergic reaction to… something! Put me on steroids and an antiboitic. Four days later I have huge hives all over my arms. They are red, grotesquely swollen and look lilke they’ve been burned. Went to my doctor. He said it was an allergic reaction to the antibiotics. I stop taking the antibiotics and he gives me more steroids. He said that about 80% of the time, you never find out what caused the initial reaction. One week later I get hives on my eyelids and they nearly swell shut. I’m still getting hives on my arms, although not as bad. I got one on my jaw the other day which made the entire side of my face go numb. They itch like crazy! Benadryl is the only thing that will stop the itching, but it knocks me out! After reading your story, I’m rather scared. I’m also one who doesn’t go to the doctor, let alone the emergency room, unless it is something very serious. Your story scares me, but I am also kind of relieved to know that there is someone else out there with these issues! Thanks for sharing and I hope you are better soon.

  54. lisa says:

So sorry this has happened. I am sending love and healing thoughts your way. My father used to react the same way to benedryl. I really hope you can figure out what happened so you can prevent it from happening again. Hang in there!

  56. OMG!!! I am soOOOOooOo GLAD to hear SWEET Matty is feeling better!!! BOW WOW!!! Poor Mr. Lovie, I bet he was soOOOOo scared!! and YOU, SWEET girly, please slow down and get your strength back, don’t worry about orders!!
I wasn’t going to mention this but someone might read it and think, that may be what I am allergic to! After each Chemo, I would recieve a Neulasta shot. After the second treatment, after getting the Neulasta shot I broke out in big hives, hundreds of them and big ones, o did I already say that?!! all over my body!! My doc told me to STOP getting the Neulasta shot after my chemo and the hives didn’t ever come back!! I can’t remember having much of a breathing problem though! THAT WAS VERY SCARY FOR YOU!! I hope and pray YOU don’t encounter whatever YOU encountered ever, EVER again Vanessa!!! I will KEEP YOU all in my prayers!

  57. Vicki says:

Oh dear! My poor sweetling. As I read your post I was so scared for you and still, so worried.
Please take good care of yourself. I need you. You are the one who reminds me to be me, to let my little girl self out to play. You bring so much joy and happiness to my days. You mean eversomuch to so many of us here. 🙂
I’m hoping and praying that you recover quickly and don’t ever have to experience that again. How truly awful.
If you need ANYTHING don’t hesitate to reach out. I’ll do what I can for you.
    Much bloggysister love. 🙂

Ohhh nooo!!! I am so sorry and hope you are doing okay. What is your favorite kind of tea? I will get some from Chantilly and send it to you! Tea always makes everything better 🙂

  59. LeeAnn says:

Hello – I’m a new reader to your blog and I wanted to wish you well. I’m so sorry you had this painful experience and I hope you are all comfy quite soon. In 2003 I had a similar experience, only I actually died. I’ve had nothing since then except some occasional wild itchies that sort of scare me and make me think it’s happening again – but it never does…I hope yours never returns too! Warm wishes to you and your family

  60. O I forgot to mention a WONDERFUL show on CBS coming tomorrow for YOU, Mr. Lovee and your 2 SWEET furries, Matty and Miles!!I bet they will LOVE it, “DOGS IN THE CITY” I can’t wait!! hehehe BOW WOW! again, sending LOVE and PRAYERS!

  61. Poor you!!!! Queenie is sending healing thoughts and prayers for your total recovery. My goodness what a totally scary and yucky experience, I’m sooo sorry you have had to go through this extreme allergy business. The Delicious are sending big furry love to help you feel better.
I have allergies but have never gone into shock. At times I have had steroid shots to get my allergy reaction reduced and give my body the abillity to catch up. I had allergies described like a bucket sitting under a dripping faucet. Things will go along OK and then the bucket fills to over flowing… The over flowing being the trigger for the allergic reaction.
Try to drink lots of clear fluids to flush the nasties out. Perhaps when you are out in the garden you may want to wear cotton long sleeved shirts, long pants, wellies and garden gloves until your body catches up and gets back on even ground. I know donning all that gear seems like a pain but expecially when you are in the thick and deep vegitation it will help keep nasty bugs from biting.
Do not despair this will pass. Be gentle and kind to yourself and this will soon be a distant memory.
    Have a better day.
    Always, Queenie

  62. Andrea says:

Oh my goodness…so sorry to hear this! I recently had a similar experience, Hives, foggyness, brain splitting headache, strange taste in my mouth…I had no idea what was happening to me until I realized I was having an allergic reaction.I eventually, through process of elimination, figured out that I was having a severe allergic reaction to a new shampoo. I have since then replaced every single product that goes near my body to organic and have noticed that I feel better than ever. Something to consider…Feel better, my thoughts are with you.
    ~Andrea~

  63. Lisa Swifka says:

    Dearest Vanessa,
I am so, so sorry you went through that and are going through it still. Please take care of yourself….everything else can wait….YOU are what is most important now to fully recover and soon you’ll be back to your spunky self. Thinking of you with love and healing thoughts and a gentle hug.
    XOXO

I love your writings, photos of your garden and especially photos and tales of your sweet furry boys.
Take care of yourself and know lots of people are praying for you!

  65. Mitch says:

I’m so sorry to hear about your allergic reaction – they’re so scary when it happens. My youngest had multiple food and environmental allergies as a baby – found out when we went camping and her arms blistered – my little baby had scars all over her arms from the blisters. The “for Dummies” book for allergies and asthma was really helpful – explained it really clearly. I get severe itching (want to peel off my skin it’s so bad) if I exercise when there is too much pollen – exercise/working or sun exposure and whatever the other trigger is can make the reaction start. Hopefully, you find a simple answer to your reaction and some real relief from it very quickly.

  66. Brandi D. says:

I think I have only commented here once before, but I am a long-time reader and so appreciate the magic you put out into the world through your art and writing.
My family and I are wishing you speedy healing and quick relief, Vanessa!

  67. Donna says:

I hope you get back to feeling right as rain again soon! It is very scary – I had something similar happen to me in March. I had fallen (and taken by ambulance to the ER) and was put on pain meds to which I had a terrible allergic reaction almost as soon as we got home – ambulance called again because I DID stop breathing. Very scary. Spent two days in the hospital to make sure something else was not going to happen or going on. Once it was out of my system I was fine – so hopefully whatever is causing your allergic reaction will flush out soon. I am sending speedy, healing thoughts your way! I am glad that Matty is doing better, too. Take care!

  68. Kimberly says:

Vanessa…oh my~ .. so very very sorry for your scary conditon you are going through. 🙁

With the help of the dr’s and Mister I am sure you are in good hands. Do take it easy and don’t over do anything. Your health is the MOST important above all. Do feel better Vanessa ~ so very worried about you 🙁

  70. So so so sorry. This obviously is not a condition that can be cured with a mud bath. Oh, Vanessa…….please be well soon.

  71. heather says:

Oh NO! That is terrible, but I am so so glad that you are ok! Hugs to you! Actually, I had a pretty terrible allergic reaction myself last summer and I’m pretty sure it was the new detergent I washed my sheets in that did it. I had opened a new bottle when I washed the sheets…I sleep on my stomach, and the next day I started getting hives and welts on my face, chest and arms, basically everything not covered by my pajamas when I slept. It was like my body just had an allergy meltdown…I looked like a leper! I ended up getting a steroid shot. It didnt itch, but felt like tiny burns. I still have faint marks on my arms from them….luckily the face seems to heal faster.
But you will heal and it will work its way out. I hope you figure out what did this to you! You might want to wash your things in hypo-allergenic soaps, gentle things. You never know what it could be, just a strange chemical or fragrance can cause these things.
    Feel better!~!
    ~H

  72. Theresa says:

Oh my goodness, Vanessa! I am SO sorry to hear of this and so sorry I am late in writing to you. I hope that this terrible reaction leaves your body entirely!!!! I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts. I did have a similar type of reaction once – I started with a few hives, then many hours later I had turned beet red and found it slightly difficult to breath. I went to the hospital and they gave me Benedryl and it cleared it up. It appears I had a penicillin reaction. Take care and get all the rest you need! Sending healing thoughts your way! And lots of hugs. xoxo

  73. Sarah says:

Oh my!!! I haven’t been able to check in much – glad to know Matty is doing better and that you may be seeing the allergic reaction diminish some. It is so important for you to address this as it best suits you, but this is the time to be proactive and respectfully assertive. I’ve dealt w/ chroinic major medical issues in the past. Fortunately my local doctor knew he needed to refer me to a specialist. Their combined efforts and patience with my questions helped me recover. Please do not hesitate to pursue this. There is a huge difference w/ an isolated event such as a big bite and something more chronic. You are worth the time and effort of any doctor. Do take care, and I hope you continue to feel better.

  74. Misty says:

While near the end of my senior year in college I’d been having little rashes on my face and little itchy patches on my inner arms. Stress I thought. Then all of a sudden one night my eyes swelled shut and face puffed up! I couldn’t see and barely speak. Steriod shot relieved the swelling so I was told “allergic reaction” to something. Did I do anything to excess? My response, “Drinking beer.” I was in college. Not likely but I restricted my diet and watched for signs of reaccurance. About 2 weeks later the rash was back so I went to a dermatologist. He told me I most likely built up an intollerence/ allergy to something over time. Could be something I was eating or using. Great, I had no clue. Then when I told my Dad he said, “Sounds like my allergy to Yellow Dye #5 and 6.” He broke out all over his body in an extremely nasty itchy rash/ hives. And I mean all over! He used to drink Mt. Dew over a 10 year period but up to 6-8 cans a day near the end. Not good for anyone really, his body built up a reaction. He stopped cold turkey and cleared up. One little swig would give him a flare up now. Then he said anything peach flavored also often had Yellow 5 and 6. Which made a light bulb go off for me. My shampoo was peach scented and sure enough it had Yellow 5. So did my conditioner, soap and lotion. A cold cream contained Yellow 6! I stopped cold turkey and away went the rashes, hives and swelling. This was 15 years ago and to this day if I use a lotion or shampoo with these dyes I’ll itch within 6-12 hours. I hope you find out what’s sending your body into a tail spin. Allergies that build up over time suck. They’re sneaky and in my case an unnecessary chemical to make things look prettier. Sad but true. Maybe my story will help? Sending healing prayers and well wishes to you.

  75. Sarah says:

    So so glad youre ok.

  76. Lynda says:

How scary! I hope you are able to figure out what it is that gave you such a serious reaction, and I truly hope that you recover as quickly as possible. Sending you best wishes and happy thoughts *hug*

  77. DogsMom says:

I am glad to hear that things for Matty are improving but Oh Dear! I was not expecting a life threatening experience for yourself. My thoughts and prayers are with you for a speedy recovery and to never have such an experience again.
I have had reactions to things, but dare say never to an extreme such as you describe. Most recently my arms have discovered stinging nettles in the yard. Instant itching and burning. My reaction to the benedryl is foggy mind and falling asleep. It is an experience like being in a tunnel and my awareness slips away. Still, it is better than the itching and burning hives.
I also suffer from anemia which is treated by iron infusions. I have adverse reactions to the iron which seem to scare the medical workers as much as me. So far they have not seemed to be life threatening, as your reactions are.
I do wish you can find out what set this off so you can avoid it.
Keep that epipen near and be sure your friends and relatives are not afraid to use it.
We will keep thinking of you and sending positive healing energies.
    Rest and get well.

  78. Oh I am so very sorry to hear this! truly! Its scary when we realize just how fragile we can be…..I to am repelled by the medical mumbo jumbo…..you are admired by many Vanessa, just know we are all praying for your quick recovery……my thoughts & prayers…🖤Debi

  79. Oh my poor Ms. V!! feel for you, that you have to go through this terrible ordeal. I’ll be sending prayers and good juju wishes your way so that you may get better and back to normal asap! Glad you’ve got mister Lovee and your sweet pups there to take good care of you 😉
    Lots of love and hugs,
    Jamie 🙂

  80. Ann says:

    Dear Vanessa,
I am so glad you are better! Just reading this made me worry about you! I do hope you solve the mystery as to what caused this. I am guessing the bites you had definitely had something to do with it. Please take care of yourself and keep your Epi pen with you at all times! I’m so glad the outcome wasn’t worse. My husband is allergic to bee stings and almost died from multiple stings last summer. Benadryl saved his life. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

  81. Cori G. says:

Oh Vanessa!!!! I am so so sorry to hear this news and hope and PRAY that everything will clear up. Are you going to do any more testing for allergies?? As much as I love my Hollyhock every time I’m “in” them I get severe itching and small red splotches…no hives, but still the small splotches. I’ve learned over the years to admire them from afar and when their flowers are spent I allow the stalks to completely dry out before I remove them…gloves to the elbow help too ‘-).
Please try to get as much rest as possible and know that I’m praying for you!!!!!!!
    I love you sweet firendling!!!
Prayers and hugs being sent your way, Cori

  82. Poor sweet girl! I am allergic to so many things and I know how bad the rashes can be. I can’t take antibiotics. I sure hope you can figure out what caused it so it won’t happen again! don’t worry about orders or anything! Just take care of yourself, sweet friend!

  83. marlene says:

Ohhh Vanessa, I am sooo glad that I stopped by you blog… but so unhappy to hear what had happen to you.. my BFF Robin had the SAME exact things happen to her… she swells up and gets all the hives and she wants to itch like mad,,, she too is on bendrayl and has an epi pen… they kept her over night one time that it happen b/c she had a fever of 103.9… they put her on a bland diet also and like you they told her it had to work it out of her body…her last episode was two weeks ago but not as bad as ones before… I am going to tell her what happen to you and maybe she can give me more info of what she knows about or I will have her come to your blog and leave you a message… you are most definitely in my prayers… Prayers & blessings sent your way so that you are on the road to recovery and feeling a 100% better Amen… Marlene ;O) xox

    Hey Vanessa ~
It’s been way too long since my last visit and now I see this. I am so sorry that you have been going through this. I cannot imagine what you must feel like, inside and out.
I’ll check back soon and know that I’m thinking of you and sending good thoughts your way.
    Ciao bella,
    Suzanne
    PS
Beautiful garden photos, by the way.

  85. Hey Vanessa
that is some scarey shit you have been thru, I dont mind physical pain but when it interferes with my head and makes me feel lulu, ohhh myyy! I freak out and make it worse!
Overnight 2 years ago my body changed, it just flipped out, I was having seizures??? why?? and I became severly allergic to wheat which has been fine in me just days before. Doctors could do nothing to stop my shaking and they gave up on me 🙁
the person who did help was a homeopath who worked with a pendulum and it led her around my body letting her know what was wrong, amazing stuff. Long story, this world is kinda poisonous etc. anywho, I just wanted to say that we dont have to only put our faith in the doctors hands, shop around a bit. My lady does distance healing so can tune in when you are at home having a melt down :/ so she can treat you from the other side of the world, otherwise I can look around your area and see what I can find in the same business. Take care, its 2012 and this world is throwing out lessons left right and centre

Oh, lady V..I am hoping you get well soon. Sending you much love and healing energy.

Vanessa, I’m sending you positive thoughts. My husband has had a couple of bounts of the repeating hives situation and he has been miserable. The only good thing is that it passes. Take care and be better

OH Vanessa!! This is frightening indeed,. do take care and get better soon (I know that sounds stupid, but I really do mean it…..thought it sounds cliche). Did they find out what caused your reaction yet? I did not read your posts in the proper order, and thought you had just some sort of rash issue from gardening, then I saw this and feel just horrid! I’m so glad you are ok, and I hope you find out what caused your illness and reaction so you can stay safe and sound!! Sending you many well wishes and goodly thought from my little neck of the woods!!

  93. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear…

I’m so sorry for what you have been through my dear! And so sorry I haven’t read/commented sooner. My father.in.law had been passing away since the end of February, mom had her mini-stroke about the same time, he passed 6/24 & mom just had hernia surgery a few days ago.
I have been through what you have been through and more so I know the fear & doubt so well. It does change you but you will get back to who you were before, but it takes time, often a lot of time. My love & prayers to you!!!

  102. lmookie1995@windstream.net says:

I have had 4-5 allergic reactions over the last few years (i guess that’s what it was) but never as bad as the episode that I had Friday night. I went out to eat at a steakhouse that I’ve eaten at before. I was woken with the palm of my hand itching (same as the other time) so I knew what was coming & I took 2 Benadryl & by the time I could make it to the bathroom I had broke out in hives & was itching like crazy. I got in the shower hoping that would help. NOT! I couldn’t even stand up in the shower. I felt like I wasn’t even there. Dizzy, confussed, just not with it. Felt like I was slipping away kind of. I got out & laid on the bathroom floor. My boyfriend came in to check on me & said that I was as white as a sheet of paper. He offered to take me to ER…which I didn’t (guess I should’ve) I finally made it back to the bed & shook with chills until I finally dozed back off to sleep. I’m soooo scared this will happen again & will be worse. I have made a doctor appt for later this week. Was I going into shock? BP dropping? Please tell me something. Do I need to ask for Epi pen?

  103. Oh my, so scary!!!
Well, mine was so bad my throat was full of hives and it closed in.
If I had not woken up, well, we wont say where I would be now. I was in
    full blown anaphylactic shock.
But you must be careful. 4 or 5 times in life is too many – and now
this new one. You need to find out what did it. If your throat is
swelling shut when it happens, you will need an epi-pen. An epi-pen is to
give you some time to live, while you get to the hospital.
I am allergic to Benadryl – I found out with my event.
You might be allergic to a type of oil? My uncle is allergy to peanut
oil. And my foot swells up when I have peanut oil too.
I dont have many answers – but –
if what happened to me, happened to me 1 more time I would be freaking out
    for sure.
    It messes with your head.
    Yours sounds very serious.
What my allergist said is that – your body gets more and ore and more
sensitive to the thing making you sick – and one day, your body can decide to
    just shut down completely.
What I did is kept a journal of everything I ate and touched on the day I
    got sick. Backtracked like crazy.
I then went back and tested each thing carefully on my skin. in one
spot. And it did not happen again.
So, the only thing I can think, and the only thing I did not try again, was
that I was reacting to the oils from the sunflower leaves broken down by the
soap I was using to wash the bugs off with my bare hands.
I was sort of poisoned – dishwashing soap and sun and plant oils do
bot mix I have come to find out from experts.
I am no doctor -= so please go see yours…. as you are.
    Good luck!!

  104. Alenamauer says:

That is horrible, I am glad you got it sorted out! My husband is very allergic to peanuts. Even just the dust from one will send him to the hospital. That is why I am scared to fly on flights that serve peanuts on their flights. That recycled air would not be good for him at all.

  105. Doloresbrown says:

Oh my gosh! That sounds really scary. My brother had a similar thing. The doctor thinks it was something he ate at a Japanese restaurant, but it could’ve been spiked punch. Any ways, we had to take him to the hospital. http://www.bvaac.com
