The Girl & the Bee

There was a girl who spoke to bees. Not to be confused with the girl who spoke to geese.  (Although, an interesting concept to say the least)

She understood them, and they her…

Bee girl 1

One day, she wandered through the wilderness, in search of her friends, the honey bees.  She hid in a tree, and peered through a tree hole, waiting to surprise them when they came buzzing along…

Bee girl 4

She waited for what seemed like ever so long, yet her delicately winged friends didn't seem to be anywhere in sight.  She climbed out of the tree, and sat in between some tree roots that cradled her ever so perfectly.  She started to drift to sleep, when she heard the enchanting sound of bee wings in the distance.

She sat up…

Bee girl 7

One large plump bee, buzzed hello.  She sat perplexed, wondering where the others were.  She asked Mister Bee, who said he didn't know.  He also said that little by little, less and less bees joined him in flight, until, this solitary bee was left to fly alone.

She pondered the situation….

Bee girl 6

She realized, there were fewer and fewer bee friendly buds in bloom.  So, she vowed, to always wear fresh flowers in her hair, for any bees she saw passing by…

Yes, that was a perfect idea thought the bee girl, otherwise known as Stella Primrose Hawthorn.  Funny enough, the Hawthorn flower is known to symbolize hope.  Hope for the bees perhaps?

Stella spent 2 days in my garden, remarking at what a good job we were doing to help keep the bees a flutter.  With water sources like fountains and dog pools, and lots of native flowering plants…

       Bee girl 8

We sang a beautiful tune called Wilderness, as we watered the garden in billowing gowns and visited with all the bees.  It was a delightful time.

Stella wanted me to remind you about something…

There are ways you can help the bees…  There is a website with lots of tips and a PDF download with all sorts of things you can do in your garden to help the honey bees.

www.helpthehoneybees.com/  – go to the section called "How you can Help."  After you click on the link, click under the garden picture, on the words "Dig In"  for more details and a PDF.  Don't those bees at the website, flying with little signs just make you want to hug them?  Thanks to Raspberry Sorbet addictions, I found all this out right on my Haagen-Dazs container…

Plants for honey bees, yes, what a good thing indeed.  Each one of us can do a little, and make a huge difference…

Bee girl 16

Now, I think it's time for me to go play a tune or two - for the bees of course, on my antique pump organ.  It looks different but sounds a bit like this.

What a coincidence, now I’m first :0) And thank you so much for the link to help save the honeybees. It has been so sad to hear of their loss and I will be glad to offer any help I can to help them. Stella is a might luck lady to wear fresh flowers in her hair all the time.
You are such a peach for sharing your beautiful work with us. I can’t wait to play with the cards. And I wish you a special and magical Mother’s Day also!
    {{hugs}}

  2. marjorie says:

OH OH OH!!! (forgive me wailing like a banshee) but….Miss Stella Primrose Hawthorn is SO LOVELY!!!!
“Your a bee charmer, Idgie Threadgood, that’s what you are”
Okay, so I’ve been re-watching Fried Green Tomatoes, again!! tee hee!!
Oh, Sigh, Vanessa, she’s just so beautiful!!

  3. I love how you incorporate your lovely tales into what you want to support! I absolutely love your art and you have definitely inspired me to be more creative and not afraid of my dreamer ways. Sometimes I feel I need to calm them down but you showed me my wings are free to fly! Miss Stella Primrose is gorgeous. Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. Cori. G says:

Oh the sweet little bees, they are disappearing indeed. We don’t use pesticides here at Brambleberry Cottage and yet I still find wounded little bees all over my gardens. It’s so sad for I love them so and find that they’re perfectly content to go about their garden chores while I’m tending to mine.
Miss Stella is such a darling little creature!!! Does she play the pump organ too? Yours wouldn’t happen to be a “Hammond” organ would it? I have always wanted one, but alas, for I have no wall to spare.
Have a lovely day my Fanciful friend!!!

Stella Primrose Hawthorne is absolutely s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g 🙂 Oh how I wish I could bring her and her bee home with me…teehee She could come plant some Hawthorne flowers at my house.
Oh and I really enjoyed the sounds of the pump organ…such an enchanting sound.
    Have a lovely weekend!!

  6. deborah says:

hMMMMMMMMmmmm. Stella Primrose looks very familiar. A self-portrait perhaps? I love the detail in the flowers that you painted. And thank you for the great distraction; I should be working and instead I am mindlessly happy clicking away on little flying bees! Happy Weekend! **blows kisses** Deborah

  7. sadira says:

I absolutely adore bees in art. I do. They are captured so much throughout history. I am so sad that they are now struggling to live in the same world as us. If the bees go for good, it will not be OK.

  8. She is so sweet..her eyes are beauty-full, almost hypnotic! I love bees..in fact when my husband and started dating (12 yrs ago?) that was his nickame for me “Bee”:) When my son was born he was “baby bee” though I just refer to him simply as Bee now.I never call him by his name unless writing about him! I include bees every so often on my dolls in the form of a bee brooch~there is something magical and wonderful about them~their sting hurts like heck but they give us one of natures finest treats.
    Have a lovely weekend!

  9. tattingchic says:

What a cute painting. The girl looks so serene with that bee buzzing around her flowers in her head. I would be wildy screaming and dancing about the room running away from it. Not a calm picture at all. Humorous, maybe, but not serene, LOL! 🙂

  10. merle says:

OOh, your painting is so wonderful! I love her so much! And, I love everything about this post! My Uncle had bee hives and would give us all honey until one year there were less and and less bees. Now there are none-not good! So very sad. Thanks for all of this. This is the same Uncle whose Mother, my Grandmother, gave me my German Pump Organ and it is such a Glorious thing. I think the best gift for my Mother this Mother’s Day would be to play it for her! I have no idea how you got your’s outside for those amazing Halloween photos! He he! I am sure the Pixies and Faeries help you a lot!
    Take care,
    merle
p.s. I am nuts for Bat for Lashes!

Hi, Vanessa! I love Miss Stella Primrose Hawthorne, she looks beautiful!

  13. Mo'a says:

Stella Primrose Hawthorn could be me…except she is young and beautiful.
Let me explain. Last week for three days in a row every time I went out either to sit in one of my seating areas or walk around in my gardens, a Bumble Bee would do a dance right in front of me…in sort of a wave pattern, up and down and sideways. Then he would stop and make a buzzing sound right in front of me…occasionally another bee would try to do the same only to be chased by my “new best friend” my Husband found it very amusing that a Bumble Bee had fallen in love with me :):) I tried to get his picture but he was to fast for me.
So she could be me…or I could be her. xoxoo

  14. beauuuutiful painting!!!

You have a beautiful blog, love your new painting!

  36. Kris says:

    Vanessa,
Miss Stella Primrose Hawthorn is simply adorable. I love her eyelashes. They look so real to me!! Whoever found her is a lucky girl (or guy) indeed.
My mother-in-law’s mom was named Stella and we all called her “Miss Stella”. Very articulate and informative in any news that happened to be going on at that time. She was the one you could ask a question about anything and she always had the answer.
She wore her hair up in a bun and it was almost silver and very long when she took it down at night. She was the epitome of someone with class and she didn’t even recognize that she had it. I can still remember her taking her hands and gently trying to pin up the wisps of hair that had fallen around her face.

  37. carolee says:

My heart skipped a beat when I read your post, and I think we must be on the same wavelength because my latest piece (currently in progress) is “Blessed Bee”!
Although allergic myself, and a bit nervous in close proximity, I think they’re such magical creatures. We have a flowering crabapple tree near the koi pond which they seem to adore, and I hope to plant more roses soon, as well as all the annuals. 🙂
    ~ Carolee
PS – have you heard of the old custom of “telling the bees” when someone in the family had passed on? There’s also quite a good folkloric sort of band by that name (artwork on their website and CD by Rima of the Hermitage) – very cool!

  38. KJ says:

Enchanting! Bees have always fascinated me. Thanks for the whimsy filled journey!
    Hugs, KJ

  41. Sweet bees! I just downloaded the screensaver of the cute winged ones….I have yet to buy my container flowers, but I will be asking for bee-friendly varieties for sure (now if it would just stay above 60 degrees for awhile!). Miss V you are a friend to the flowers and birds and bees. You are sweeter than honey, my dear! Enjoy the day! xo Erin

  42. waterrose says:

Lovely story and important cause. We have plenty of bee and bird friendly plants and trees. Along with fresh water. We still don’t have a pool….I know how they loved the one at our previous house.

  43. karen cox says:

    Vanessa,
She is lovely. I love your paintings. I have been lost in the land of beeswax collage lately. I love it! My mom always reminds me to have a bit of local honey when allergy season kicks in. It’s the perfect natural cure. Hope you had a lovely weekend. After having breakfast with my daughter Ashley, then I drove to see my mom in Vermont with my daughter Sarah. Hope you had a lovely Mother’s Day.
    Karen

  44. Hi Vanessa,
I’ve already had 2 or 3 hearty laughs today and my dose of “take your breath away” enchantment from your lovely post. Thank you for that!
    Michelle 🙂

  45. Pamela says:

Such a good idea. To help the honeybees. I would consider keeping some myself, but I’m not sure if Edward would find himself in trouble if I did. I shall visit the sites you’ve posted. Thank you.
And I had such a hearty laugh last night that my sides are still aching!! Nothing like it!

  46. I am so worried. Miss Stella is a delightful woman child and such a great reminder to us to save the bees!!!
