I best comply…

I have been tagged.  I am it. So here we go.  7 things about me, weird, interesting, unusual.. Who knows…  Perhaps I’ll bore you to death?  7 things nonetheless….

1)  I collect things.  Things I think are fantastic and throw the average person into freak-out mode.  I walk into a strange old shop… Lots of very very old religious icons and such.  I see this. It says "Beware." Others glance away, I exclaim "I’ll take it."

Be_warned

It is supposedly a box created by a strange artist who lived in SanFransisco & New York in the 60’s.  He used to make these strange boxes, and sometimes, leave them on the street for people to grab. Sometimes, they exploded.  I forgot the name of the artist and what the boxes were called… But, it hasn’t blown us up yet.. And, it is glued shut… Should I be afraid?  I love it…

2)  I have alot of books.  Books everywhere you turn. Magazines too, but books, ALOT!!!  Books at the "in town" house…

Books_at_home

Books in Catalina (my space in the country where I have my studio, gallery, and loftish space. OH! and Mr. Lovee).

More books in Catalina…

Books still in bags, books by the couch…

There is more where that came from. But, I feel like I am looking pretty freaky already, and I am only on #2.

3)  This next one has been brought to my attention by my sister.  She found herself quite disturbed when she tried to hop into my bed and veg with me…  I sleep with weird things in my bed.  I think you might have already heard this.  But, if you can’t find the scissors or the screwdriver, simply look in my bed… I know, I’ll die from a self inflicted stab wound one day… C’est la vie…

Img_8710

4) I have had lead in my left hand and in my right finger since elementary school… I have no recollection of how it got there.  I just know I have it.  Actually, the only thing I remember is trying to get it out once… Disaster…

4)  I have to sleep 8+ hours a night.  I must sleep alone, in the dark, in the middle of my bed.  My pillows must be positioned like the top of a pointy roof, or else.  I am evil if bothered during sleep.  My sister recalls being punched when my mom would send her to wake me for breakfast as kids.  I slept through the huge california earthquake in the 90’s.  We were on our yearly retreat to spend a couple weeks at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego.  I felt so at home that, I stayed in bed.  I was sleeping. Thank goodness the place didn’t collapse on me.. Sheesh…

5)  I am still recovering from growing up.  I don’t mean mentally, I mean physically.  Granted, I was not made to be a very tall person.  However, I used to have a Saturday morning ritual of running to the television room with my pillow and watching T.V.  I would cozy up on the couch, and get into my pillowcase with my pillow, like a little sleeping bag.  One day, I went to get in and the pillow case was too short.  I had grown.  It was the most disturbing thing…  I still snuggle in, but only to the top of my legs. Too bad I can’t get all the way in.  That would make me really small though…

My sister is answering the last two for you…

6) In high heels & by myself, I manage to get a bed, an armoire, a dresser and a chaise lounge into my car.  With precision.

7)  Very often, people think that my name is an invented stage name.  A drag queen got angry at me once, and told me he was going to steal my name???  He shouted on the street, that he thought of it first and I couldn’t use it.  What?  Hahahaha!

I was tagged by Sarah & Dave. Hope I played right guys!  If any of you want to play this game, you can leave me 7 things about yourself in my comments.  That would be soo fun!  Or play along on your blog! ;*

Okay, back to work I go…  So busy with a bunch of projects…  New pieces at the next post!  I have a show coming up soon. YIKES!  And a witches party to plan, oh my!!  Into my dungeon…

See you soon!!!

  1. are you ever going to open up
    the glued shut box?
see, i would HAVE to know
what is in there…HAVE to know…
    🙂
i am the same about sleeping in a dark room
    with the pillows *Just So*
    i have to arrange them
before i turn out the lights
    or i can not sleep…
    Tons Of Pillows!
when i travel i beg for extras
and tip housekeeping for more and more…
    when i stay places
    that don’t have extra pillows,
i make them out of bundling up my clothes…
i walk around some countries wrinkled
but i have to sleep well…

  2. flutter says:

I love all of this about you.

  3. Dave says:

ooh, when I was a kid I was running with a pencil and fell, and it stabbed my right hand in the palm, and I had a mark there for a long time, but it seems to have mostly worn away now. I think it was just some lead dust though left from the pencil, I don’t think the actual lead got left in there.
I also have a scar under my right eyebrow from when I was a kid and I was sliding around in slippers on our linoleum floor and smashes right into a corner of the wall and had to have 7 stitches.
I’d be really interested to open the box too… but scared at the same time. I think it would be one of those things I’d put off for a long, long time, but would always feel it calling to me… “open me… open me…”

  4. all of these are just more things to love about you….deliciously eccentric in a very GOOD way!!
I must have at least 2 pillows and they cannot be flat in any way. Makes it hard if I turn and sleep on my stomach though as it arches my back from the height and I wake up with an ache. (but at least my pillows are fluffy)ha!
I love oddities and probably would have attempted to open that box – albeit outside just in case.
I think life would be odd without books all over…I’ve had to pack some away just due to my house size being small. I keep asking G to build floor to ceiling shelves for me.
Your studio looks like a magical place. My art is nil right now….the Muse must be sleeping.
Can’t wait to see your new pieces!
    XOXOXOXO
    Love,
    Lisa

  5. rochambeau says:

Hey there Ms. Fanciful. Your seven are fab! Such fun know more about your magic world.
If you ever find yourself in need of a new pillow case I know someone who can secure one for you. Just the perfect size for cartoon watching. 😉 Good luck on all of your upcoming stuffs.

  6. Marjorie says:

Eeepness! Your 7 things make me giddy! I love all the books….we had to, ahem, ‘purge’ our book collection the last time we moved, so I am slowly building it back up. I definitely learned my lesson! You are such a Darling Vanessa!
Oh…and I totally agree on 8+ hours of sleep….accept I am (remarkably) always a lamb when awoken…for some reason it just never bothers me…even from a deep sleep of dreaming of giant, wild, jungle cats to answer the phone at 2 in the morning….I just wake up very easily and am really alert right away…..weird, huh? 🙂

  7. Marjorie says:

errr…..gee….perhaps I should learn to spell? I should have typed “except” (and probably more typos, too!) 😉

  8. Paris Parfait says:

Aha, more evidence that we are twins (despite the age difference). The endless supply of books, the transporting furniture in a car while wearing high heels – so many similarities! But I would want to open that box – then glue it back, of course and never tell anyone I opened it. 🙂 xoxox

  9. sarah says:

You are c.r.a.z.y. But I love crazy, it’s just so much more than normal!

  10. Conni says:

Number 4 really makes me laugh…I am the same way about being evil when woken. My poor husband sometimes comes to bed later than me, and if he accidentally wakes me up, I can not be held accountable for what I might say! Poor guy. We also had to get a King-sized bed so that I have plenty of room…the same can be said if I’m just tired…I’m not quite the perky butterfly if I need a nap. Can’t wait to see your new work!

  11. Nancy says:

“Bore us to death”? Uh…I think we were ALL hooked after #1! 😉
OH! And #7 is too funny! Because I too first thought that you had made up your name when you became an artist because it’s such a cool name! A raging drag queen…I swear I’m LMAO!!

  12. denise says:

I have lead in the exact same spot on my right hand. It was the 5th grade lead accident.
I love sleeping alone in my bed in the middle with my pillow positioned in a certain way. My husband does not like this little oddity…
My mom has books like you do…They are everywhere, I mean everywhere. The trunk of her car is full, her back seat in the car is full, her house is full, her closet is full, Her bed is full…
I have an issue with books, but not as bad as my mother.
I collect weird things, especially stuff i don’t need…and things i find on the beach
My neice asks me why i have so many “spooky inventions” in my yard.
I don’t like to brush my hair or clean house…

  13. cindy says:

not so weird! i love that you have all those books! (i have tons too!) i’m having a garage sale this weekend, wanna come take away some books!? ha, ha! (and lots of vogue mags too!)

  14. Lovely dungeon you have there! Loved your weird things although I have to say I didn’t think they were THAT weird! I got tagged for that too and haven’t done it yet. I think I will though yours was so fun!

  15. Gillian says:

Like some of your other commenters, I would have to know just exactly was inside the box. Open it, with protective face gear on of course, and then put it back. We won’t tell!
Your weirdness is wonderful. I would refrain from sleeping with scissors from now on, but the rest of it, kudos!
    xo
    Blue

  16. Tessa says:

Well, you already know we share #1, an obsession with all things strange and old, but did you know that I also have a very large book infestation problem at my place? They are trying to take over, room by room, and I don’t have any power against them!
We have a twice yearly booksale here that is basically like Christmas for the book-obsessed. It’s a huuuuuge warehouse full of every type of book under the sun… and everything is mostly under $1 each! It’s like heaven on earth, and I’ve been going for about 15 years…never left without a box full!

  17. Ky Eliza says:

But… but if you open the box, you ruin the speculation of what’s really inside. It could be anything!

  18. sadira says:

How lovely…as always! I think I shall play along on my blog…

  19. Donna O. says:

Hey Marion (the librarian- you DID see the Music man, right?)I love all these things about you but now I want to know your sister!
    D.
PS- I don’t sleep with scissors- I run with ’em.

  20. Chantal says:

I so enjoyed finding out a little bit more about you! Lead in your hand? I’m puzzled as to how it got there…

  21. Oh No, Vanessa. Filling your house with books is not weird! You owe us one more 🙂

  22. NancyB says:

I too have lead in my hand..the left one right above where the pinkie bends..that happened in jr high..I turned around to the desk behind me and placed my hand on the desk to ask for a piece of paper and the mean girl stabbed me with her pencil! Meanie she is!! All my books are in storage and over 1200 miles away. 🙁 I surely miss old musty book stores and havent seen one in ages! Loved hearing more about you!!!

  23. Beth says:

You have the most AMAZING things! Your house must be like a museum! I especially love that box! How wonderfully mysterious and strange!!! 🙂

  24. I love your random things….you must check my blog I too was tagged by someone other than your taggers and did a “little kid” edition of oddball things from my childhood.
    you will enjoy.
I very much like you sleeping one, it reminds me of someone, oh yeah….me.

  25. cd&m says:

Love all those books, but did you know lead can poison you? One of the first signs of lead poisoning is madness!!!!! (he he he)

  26. Marilyn says:

I can’t imagine getting 8 hours of sleep. SIX hours is a blessing for me.

  27. Cre8Tiva says:

oh my…we are more alike than ever…i have lead in my palm also…sleep with 4 pillows…alone…and with piles of random things and dozens of books…need i say more?? …blessings, rebecca

  28. phyllis says:

I love the old clock box with a doll under the magnifying glass 🙂 Glad it didn’t explode. I have my pencil lead in my shin…and also love to sleep in the dark with lots of pillows for 8 hours!

  29. I am intriqued and love the peek into your world. You areso delightful my dear! I cannot wait to see yur new creations.
    XOX
    Kristen

  30. stephanie says:

So much fun reading of all your ‘eccentricities’ and those of commenters…me…hmmmmm
I have an odd thumb on one hand, somehow misshapen, my daughter thinks freakish.
The pillow thing, I must have only 1 fairly flat one and when I wake up must spend a few minutes with it rolled tight under my neck.
I have danced as entertainment during a chamber of commerce breakfast meeting.
    Makes us an interesting bunch!!!

  31. Jamie says:

I LOVE your 7 things!! They are wonderful. Just like you. Reading your blog is like mini vacation, a breath of fresh air. I laughed out loud about your name:) I have a friend named Debbie Devine. You can only imagine what she hears about that all the time! Love, Jamie

  32. Oh…I love books and they are everywhere too…they also share my bed when the Mr. is working. He works nights and when he is gone I take all of his pillows and tuck them around me. He has three and I have three. But, I never sleep more than a few hours at a time….

  33. Love how you made even a list of things about yourself delightfully fun, photos and all. I rushed through my list of things about myself so fast, without even a photo. And of course that was the day famous designers came by to check things out! Wouldn’t you know it! Good for you on making a fun post out of everything!
Thanks for your visit, and for leaving such a nice comment to let me know you had been by!

  34. Dee Light says:

    What a great list!!!
I’d tell you to “sleep tight” tonight, but I’m a little worried about your safety!!! So “sleep safely”!!!

  35. tiffany says:

    You are so much fun!

  36. tiffany says:

ps.. your Y box should be there tomorrow I think.. Monday at the latest. 🙂

  37. cruststation says:

I love the 7 things about you, they are so interesting and makes you even more special! I adore the ‘be warned’ box, it’s adorable yet at the same time peculiar and intriguing. The things you love are multi-faceted (my kind of objects)…I also need 8 hours+ sleep a day, but ‘Eek’ on sleeping with sharp objects! The thing about getting into the pillow case is hilarious, maybe you should try an actual sleeping bag -‘Normal is just a setting on your hairdryer’ 🙂

  38. Tricia says:

Oh hahahaha! i laughed out loud about the drag queen!! That is soooooo funny Miss V!
    Too much!
I also got a kick outta you punching sis for waking too early and snuggling in the pillowcase in the tv room….now, i know what i shall make you for your birthday (when is it anyway) or Christmas: a giant pillowcase!!!

  39. Joy says:

O.K. this is WEIRD. I have had a little piece of lead in my finger since I was a child TOO! Mine is in the same spot – but middle finger. 🙂
