Hello September Garden

September has brought such moist days.

Drizzles and quiet early morning strolls.

September garden 20

We wake up, pups cuddled round, yawning.

Thinking of all the things we have yet to do around the house.

And then, we go out to explore.

Even before we are fully awake, we stumble out the door.

September garden 2

It's whisper worthy, and overgrown.

Bunnies scamper off when they see us coming.

A big light brown plump rat that's been eating little pumpkins tries to squeeze out of the garden.

With much effort he does, and jumps into the brush pile.

I laugh, and smile.

Dozens of volunteer tomatillos grow.

Seemingly endlessly.

Packaged beautiful in their little green lanterns.

Unwrap, and you have a perfectly round sticky little green tomatillo.

September garden 13

The pumpkin madness continues.

Unexpected huge guys grow leaps and bounds every single day.

Here is a giant fairy tale punkincake…

September garden 32

Pumpkin vines start to look tired, and yet they surprise us with more blossoms everyday.

See all the little pumpkins hiding under the leaves?

September garden 16

I count oranges.

Those winter treats, so sweet.

26, 27, 28…

The most we have ever had on that little dwarf orange tree we love.

September garden 29

Morning glories love the sunless days.

Any sun and they fade away.

But on drippy dark days, there they sway all day.

September garden 24

Pinwheels of blue on blue.

September garden 25

Reminding me of my Greek china that I had forgotten about.

Under this storybook tree you might expect Mister Snail to come on by, pulling a tiny sleigh with books that he may or may not have stolen (I mean borrowed) from the doll house.

Hollering, G'day Madame, I mean Miss.

In his bright and happy British accent.

September garden 26

As leaves droop and part, we see more punkin love than we could have imagined.

September garden 3

Thank goodness Mombie is bringing an extra freezer, because pumpkin eatin' is going to go on for a long good while.  And, we will need to freeze so much up, even more than we already have.

I spy more of those awesome guys everyday.

It's like, a major pumpkin bonanza.

And knock on wood, the last couple years no pumpkin disease has found us at all.

September garden 4

Things are looking crispy in the best breath of autumn way.

September garden 5

September garden 7

Matty likes to go in the side garden gate for some reason.

I think our plump rat lives just inside and to the right.

September garden 8

3 beds are filled to overflowing with basil.

I made pesto this weekend and didn't even make a tinge of a dent.

September garden 9

Most of the basil is volunteer, and all of it has a bit of a different flavor.

Some more mild, other more licorice like in the best way.

Some, going to flower.

I pinch the tops off all summer, so the basil plants get huge and don't go to flower too soon, but there comes a time when you know it's okay to let them flower and seed, and see them next year…

September garden 37

The bees love the basil flowers.

September garden 33

I squat down, pulling weeds…

And then, eat beautiful ripe cherry tomatoes.

Before 7 a.m.

Then I pick baby arugula, rinsing it with the hose, and munch.

The flavor is incredible.

It's buttery and spicy, making all my senses come to life.

I can't stop eating it.

It's a jungle.

Out of control.

Hopefully next year I will be better at keeping the explosion down.

September garden 10

September garden 6

I find pumpkins in the red bell peppers…

September garden 11

Then more on the west side of the garden.

Our fake plastic rat hangs out, trying to scare off critters.

But mostly, he scares me everyday.

For some reason, every single day I forget he is there 🙂

September garden 12

I haven't shown Mister Lovee the giant fairy tale pumpkin growing on top of the enclosed/domed garden space.

Eek, I'll repair it later.

It's worth it for a punkin' babe.

September garden 14

Such sights to see on early little strolls.

September garden 15

Clouds hug the mountains beautifully…

September garden 17

As the bright pink morning glories beg for the sun to stay away.

September garden 18

Handfuls of roses pop back up on cooler days.

September garden 19

As quince begin to ripen.

Quince jam, yumm.

September garden 21

Gourds hang every every where.

September garden 22

And rose explosions get out of control.

I need to prune, I know I know.

September garden 35

Aren't birdhouse gourds nature art?

Fascinating growing creatures.

September garden 23

Pass the faux outhouse, whipping back around the storybook tree…

September garden 27

Zinnia's great us with their layered colorful brilliance…

September garden 28

As I search for my kids.

Of the fur variety.

Of course, watching t.v.

Miley has shows, ya know 😉

September garden 30

A couple extra ruffled hollyhocks bloom, even though their huge wave was months ago.

September garden 31

As we all just look on happily.

September garden 34

Crunchy brown leaves more and more, no matter.

September garden 36

I collect goodies for meals every single day.

Scallions and leeks are in abundance.

September garden 38

I hide out here and there.

Taking deep breaths in this crazy little life.

Feeling a good cozy calm.

September garden 39

I stare at vines wrapping around roses.

September garden 40

And then I spot them.

My favorite weed flowers.

The ones that only turn up at the beginning of autumn.

September garden 41

Morning air so cool, and there is the truth.

Seasons are dancing hand in hand.

Having a lovely last tinge of summer together, before one voyages off to far away places.

And the other stays for a good long visit.

September garden 42

What's to come, is known and unknown.

Every day fragile and beautiful.

No time to take our days for granted.

No time at all.

September garden 43

I discover a new ticking striped fluffy couch in Mister's guitar room.

Covered by a zarape, unused.

Well, I knew it was there, but never thought much of it.

Only, now it's in the office nook.

Which is much more like just a happy sitting room.

And dare I say, I am hooked.

It's perfect and cozy, and where I want to be when it comes time in the day to relax.

With a shawl made by my grandma.

September garden 44

A cozy place to be whilst thinking always about what is going on out there…

In our garden.

September garden 1

We take breaks to visit it throughout the day.

Breaking out of the house, running into the jungle.

Peace and goodness, in that place.

How are you?

Cooler days??

Early candy corn nibbling yet?

I saw bags and bags at the store.

Fresh stuff too.

I had to pry Mister Lovee away from the candy section like a teenager.

Love, V

Sparkly heart

ps:  If you are a huge Tori Amos fan, you must hear her feature with The Bullitts.

My fave fave part begins at the 3:50 mark to the end.

It's incredible at that mark, evoking much of those early Tori memories.

(a tinge of Choirgirl and To Venus and Back feelings sneak out)

pss:  Although, for this post, I should probably lean towards a garden inspired song like Datura, a fave.

    Vanessa:
I’m so glad you posted this today. I desperately needed to walk through a garden. A big, delicious, jungle of a garden.
The only thing I have left is zucchini. The weather is still horribly hot here. I’ve been in the art cave, in my studio, not taking any time to walk outside. Too hot to stay outdoors more than a snippet of a minute. Just long enough to take the puppies out.
Looking at your garden, I can almost smell the early Autumn in the air. The tomatillas and gourds and pumpkins allow me to daydream about magical little creatures living full lives under the leaves. Your garden renews my desire to illustrate children’s books. 🖤
Thank you for sharing these photos today. They helped me to forget my down-heartedness.
    xoxo

So nice to visit with you today. Thanks for taking us along.
    Your garden is amazing!Hugs!deb

  3. Queenie says:

Your morning glories are beautiful. They are such a wonderful flowering vein, fragile yet such luscious color. I’m enjoying the cooler weather yet the humidity is wearing on me a little, but hey at some point we’ll dry out a bit and moss will quit growing on my north side :o)
    Have a great day.
    Always Queenie

  4. Roselie says:

Oh thank you thank you for this lovely visit!I love autumn gardens and yours is particularly beautiful!

  5. Miss Linda says:

It’s wonderful walking and watching your gardens grow. I found my first red leaf on the ground…fall is slowly coming. Weather is humid and hot, should be cooling off soon.

  6. Alia says:

Lovely, Lovely, Lovely. So much rain has been welcome here lately! It is the only way it starts to seem even remotely like fall (even though we don’t really have fall much). You have more pumpkins than the grocery store! If you need to get rid of any extras feel free to send ’em down my way!
ps. I am sending you something in the mail so keep an eye out for it!

  7. Wonderful pictures as always, sweet Vanessa. But how are you doing, what is going on with your health? Whatever it is, I wish you a speedy recovery.

  8. laura says:

I’ve been thinking about you so much lately and am so happy to see your jungle of a garden. Mine is more of a jungle, but much less productive. All those pumpkin mounds I planted and so far, no pumpkins have survived. I think there is one large one that I can spot from the back door, but I haven’t been able to get out and check on it. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to take a walk through the garden and see what is what.
    much love & blessings

  9. Melanie says:

Thank you Vanessa, for taking us for a stroll through your wonderful garden. I can never get enough of it. Endorphins start to flow – good for the body and soul. Thinking so much about you and sending hugs.

  10. Renee says:

A bit cooler if you can call 80s and 90s cooler. Fall is on the way.
We have had 20 more inches of rain than last year. So everything is still green.
We are still getting green beans, okra, tomatoes, peppers and butternut squash from the garden.
I love all your pumpkins. You must have the perfect place for them. Love the pics.

  11. Marjorie says:

Truly, Vanessa, Your garden is pure magic!!! Seeing the basil going to seed….I can feel the sunshine and smells the dew and that lovely early-morning herb smell!!! I do so miss and love that from my sunny florida days! (Though I do love the shade and cool of our current home, too). : ) Wishing you well this day!!! Thank You for sharing such gardenly delights!! : )

  12. Cori G. says:

    Dearest Beloved Fanciful Friendling,
I so enjoyed my little visual walk around your world this morning. I stop at each image and drink in the beauty and as I read your words, it’s as if I’m there in the garden with you. Such a lovely little corner of the world

  13. DogsMom says:

A walk through the garden is such a wonderful way to start one’s day. Sets the proper mood. (Avoid news shows first thing in the morning.)
I have been kncoking down weeds and putting away the summer things.
Temps here in Wisconsin have been rollercoastering from 60s to 90s back and forth, up and down. Who knows when we may see frost?

  14. Shell says:

Your garden is bursting with life and beautiful. Talking about your resident plump rat made me think of Templeton from Charlotte’s Web. We had an amazing thunderstorm here. The lightening lit up the dark sky like the sun.

  15. Chris says:

Catching up with you, and loving your daily life.
Thinking of you and your upcoming challenges.
