Dark Fairytale? True Story.

While fluttering around, I realized that in the midst of my art show preparing craziness, I forgot to share some of the tales I have been preparing to tell…True tales that is. As, anyone who knows me, knows that I have many a story, and most are true.

I have the remnants of proof from the tales (voice changes to a whispering cackle tone) which will cause the hairs to raise on your lovely little arms, my pretties….(her overly long scraggly nails, lightly running up and down your arm…).

Take a cozy seat…A nibble to eat…A hot sip…and lend an ear if you will…

Not too long ago, In perhaps a very far place from you, in the late night depths of an intense moment of REM sleep, a strange creature appeared to a girl…The girl found herself entering a hallway closet…A door to the left of the enchanted mirror…

Img_3695_2

In this dream, the girl opened the door and found a tiny room (which really is like a room closet under the stairs).  The room was full of boxes of treasures along with a mahogany ball and claw chair.  However, there seemed to be an old huge faucet coming out of the wall in the deepest part of the closet. This faucet was on and it was filling the room with water.  The room had about 3 inches of water in it, and the girl, afraid that the items in the boxes and the legs of the chair were getting ruined, started frantically removing the items from the closet and tossing them into the hallway…The floor in this flooding room was slick like shiny tiles and was the color of a black bottom swimming pool…As she got closer to taking everything out of the room, she was able to reach the faucet. As she attempted to turn it off, she realized the knob would just turn and turn… It was broken and could not be turned off…As she reached for the last box, there was this giant animal, an insect of sorts, about the size of a lobster striking at her, trying to sting her…It was a giant Scorpion.  The girl was trying to get away from it, and in every direction she would turn, the scorpion would reappear.

Finally the girl woke up. And, as quickly as the nightmare had appeared, it disappeared. The girl went on her day, starting with a visit to the garden.

While in the garden (at her city home), still in her socks and in sleepy mode, the girl did her watering and visits, having quite the delightful morning. She turned on the hose and was watering all of her plants….

It was always such a treat to get to spend a day in the little fairytale garden, crossing under the tunneled canopy of vines to get to the hidden back porch and visit with other garden characters…

As she was humming along, feeling free and alive, watering all of the plants, now fully awake from a long night of dreaming, some of which she could no longer remember…She noticed that the hose was acting funny. She looked over at the wall where the faucet comes out of and noticed that the hose and faucet connection was bad and that there was water dripping everywhere.  She also noticed that the packages she had taken out of the car and the chair she was getting ready to take to the loftish space were sitting in an inch of water, all the bottoms getting wet.  She rushed over, and started lifting everything out of the water. As she got to the last item, lifting it up and stepping half a step backwards, something happened that made her freeze.

Her dream from just hours before came rushing back. Could this really be happening???How could it be???? Standing there, was a Scorpion, the size, un-process-able by the human brain. All she could think was, WHAT? *#%@&*?????

She had to think fast…She had just purchased a huge battery jar full of shells…She emptied them out…She grabbed a huge brush that had a handle like a broom…And tried to lift the thing….She was so afraid, shaking, and frozen….Shivering with fear….She put the huge jar on its side, and tried to push the creature in….It wrapped its tale around the handle… She could hear its tale snapp.. snapping, tap tap….YIKES!@#$  But, she knew she had to get in in the jar. NOONE would believe this. Never in a million years.  She captured the thing.

Her kind instincts were to take it into the desert and release it… But the dream… A premonition of sorts….She told her sister.  She was sooo hesitant to tell her parents the story, starting with the dream.  Everyone would think she was nutzz. A nutty storyteller like her grandmother Josephina, that is was Dad would say. But Momm-bee, she believed…A little. Until she(Momm-bee) peered into the jar and howled, she gasped, she grabbed her neck, her heart.  She ran to the phone, long distance call to Grandma Josephina, her mother….Aunt Denise was at granny's, they got out "The Book."  Kill it was the consensus.  Kill it because apparitions of Scorpions mean that someone is trying to harm you they said….Pour boiling water over it and say a huge prayer… Aye aye aye… What to do?????

Call Mr. Lovee, balling, told him the story. And – the Earthy angel himself was stunned. Stunned because this was not the first time such things had happened to the girl.. He told her to do whatever the grandmother said to do.  She raced around, crying in disbelief.  How could the dream really come true??? How???? Even Dad freaked when he saw it, scorpions in the desert are usually thin, the size of your pinky nail… Her story was no longer an enhanced Vanessa drama thing. It was true.

Everyone left, leaving her with the Scorpion.  She knew she had to save it for proof.  Proof of what? She was devasted and torn. How could she kill the living creature….She kept it for many days…She called her friend, the earthy insect person. She called her friend at the University. They wanted to see it.  So, the girl decided with some urging, to pour alcohol over it once it seemed lifeless, and put it in a jar to take it to "the insect guy."

This happened in the fall.  Today, the scorpion sits on a shelf. As a reminder that I am not crazy. You might think it hocus pocus silly-ness.  Just Wait. Wait until it happens to you…Cackling….

Have a great weekend!  Oh – and, make sure there isn't one of these under your covers at the foot of your bed… Or perhaps, in your snow boot??? Maybe even, under the seat of your car… Waiting…Warning you to always think about your dreams…Read the signs….? who knows.  All I know. This thing scared the living day-lights outta little ole me.

  1. Marilyn says:

Dude!!! That is just unreal (and a bit gross). I have this urge to start slapping away imaginary scorpions from my arms and legs. Thanks! =P

  2. Gillian says:

oh oh oh what a fantastic and amazing story/tale/real life adventure!!! You tell it so brilliantly – and I would have been terrified/spooked and amazed all at the same time. Although it’s not gonna happen here in the UK – no such thing – oh no! I adore the way you write vanessa – please tell us more of your tales!! Hope all your hard work is going well my dear.

  3. sarah says:

That is the BIGGEST. Freaking. Scorpion. EVAR! Ok, the scorpions in Clash of the Titans were the biggest freaking scorpions ever, but that one is a close second. And those ones were claymated, so they probably don’t count.
It’s all because of your gypsy heritage, shining through!

  4. Okay ,my skin just crawled back from its skeleton! yeesh, see ,good OR bad ,magical things happen to magical people.I believe in kismet, and could share a story or 2 with you,but nothing quite so creepy!
scorpions make me think of my grandma,we would find scorpions in her house from time to time. She always said they traveled in pairs and was on the vigil for the second creature.

  5. Tricia says:

Oh, you had me so entranced by your story, and honey, that is one gi-normous freakin’ scorpion! I am a scorpio…hehe.
i have caught mice in my apartment and released them outside since I could not bear to kill them…. oh and once Steve caught a rather large spider and put it in the toliet (without flushing) and well, this part is kind of em-bare-assing (pun coming) but the next time i went to use the facilities, that spider took his revenge out on me!! I had a big angry red bite right on my butt cheek! It sounds made up but this is actually a true story!
And now everytime Steve catches a spider I make him flush…enjoyed your story Miss V!

  6. sulu-design says:

I’m almost speechless (I always have SOMETHING to say – but this has me close to being without words). So freaky… and the size of that thing! How cool to have the proof. Your grandchildren are going to love this all one day!

  7. KSV says:

  10. cindy says:

(i believe in those, too!) aye chihuahua, that is a monster scorpion! i am amazed you put it in the jar! girl, you brave! i call my husband to dispatch the tiniest of spiders. my dad was deathly allergic to scorpions, but he still went looking for them when we went on trips to mexico. he took a blacklight…they glow in the light of the blacklights! spooky!

  11. sadira says:

CRIPES!!! I thought the centipedes up here were bad, ewwwww…my skin is just crawling and crawling. Now, I’m gonna have to clean the house all over again. I can’t believe you actually caught the thing and saved it…I love that you had the dream about it, and that you trusted yourself, and that you called on the wise grandmother to see what the meaning was (I’m always looking up the meanings of all sorts of nature-type things in a book I have…It’s amazing to me how the universe is always trying to get our attentions!) Thanks for the story, I hope I can get to bed tonight…

  12. aaaaaaaagggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

I followed your pieces of advice, Vanessa:
I got well-seated, had a cup of hot coffee by the key-board… and followed you round your garden… and I went paniquing when you found the scorpion, just as if I had found it myself…
I would have believed you, had you got rid of the THING…

  16. that’s so amazing! OF course, i have NO trouble believing these things as i am a superstitious little southern hoodoo-mama! Dreams can tell us so much if we listen! I am s happy that you listened to YOUR dream and took care not to be stung! Do you know, i have never seen a scorpion in “real” life? Humongous spiders, yes, but no scary scorpions! Aiiyyy yi yi!
Thank you for sharing your fabulously creepy tale!!!

  17. Well, I had suspected that you were a magical creature. But now I know for sure. Please do tell me if you have any dreams for me!

  18. Rosemary says:

I love all your vignettes! Ew, that scorpian is scarey!

  19. Paris Parfait says:

Fascinating story! That mirror does look enchanted. As for scorpions, they creep me out. I had a couple of close encounters with scorpions in Jordan (oh and I’m married to a Scorpio). 🙂

  20. Ulla says:

Wow, what a tale! And the photos are great!!! We used to have scorpians at our house when we lived in the mountains… My mum once got bitten by a baby one hiding in her bath towel, after she took a shower – yikes! And the day of my wedding, one of my bridesmaides found one in her bed in the morning! Oh yes… We don’t live there anymore, but I still think of them every now and then… no preminitions, but the thrill is still there… You at least have the real proof ! wow oh wow…

  21. cruststation says:

What a frightening story, you did say that you had a history of witches in your family, now I’m beginning to believe…oh gosh, that scorpion look quite big, kind of scary. I must say though your garden is magical and I spot your slipper and sock combo 🙂

  22. tiffany says:

Yipes… Scary dream and scary bug!
But… your little treat plate with the flowers on it is lovely!!!

  23. KSV says:

I got stung on the elbow in bed at our parents house, remember that? There I was sleeping all comfortable and all of the sudden I feel like my arm is on fire, so I get up and go look in the mirror and I had a red bump on my elbow, so I go to look in the bed and there is that nasty scorpion rolled up on the corner of my pillow. It looked almost like when a dog rolls into a little ball to fall asleep. So, I go get some ibuprofen and a glass of milk, and my dad was still up at like 3am and he comes into the hallway and asks what is wrong, I tell him about the scorpion, so he goes to my bed to see if the scorpion is still alive and it is gone, so we dismember the entire bed and we find it hiding in the crack of the mattress at the foot of the bed, at this point my arm feels like someone gave me an indian burn and my skin started to twitch and get tingling like it had fallen asleep. I didn’t fall asleep again until 9am but I used some first aid tape to strap a bag of ice to my arm.
Later that day at around 2 or 3 in the afternoon, my mom invited grandma, aunt denise, and everyone over to the house to eat. I finally got out of bed to get dressed and the whole left side of my body was numb. I couldn’t feel it just laying in the bed, but I had to drag my left leg behind me. I was gimpy.
Your sting was worse because a baby stung you and their poison is more potent. I also have been stung once before and have the poison in my system already. I don’t know if this happens to you, but sometimes if the weather is cloudy and about to rain, I get the pain in my elbow and my heel where I was stung before.
    I hate scorpions.

  24. giggles says:

Fascinating enjoyable story! You have a wise grandmother. Dreams should always be heeded, many intuitive messages come through. Scary, but amazing tale! I’ll be back for more!

  25. Wow…..what a story!!!!
    Fascinating

  26. Stephanie says:

Oh Vanessa! What an incredible tale (tail!)You had me on the edge of my seat…I hope only good things came from this premonition.
I too have had scorpion encounters…bit in bed! They are creations from another world.

  27. carolyn says:

Oh my God that scorpion is huge. Weird the dream and the real life scenario, but maybe not that weird, similar things have happened in my family but not with scorpions!

  28. brenda says:

Wow! you are a great story teller, so imaginative, I love it.

  29. Vanessa says:

I can’t stand looking at that tning anymore either!!!! Aaaaaghhhh!!! Sorry everyone!!!!
