In a little house, somewhere out there, in place where vines and trees twirl amongst each other…
A girlwoman stood in silence, contemplating…
And then, she made a decision.
She cooked two of her babies, you see… (pumpkin babies, that is)
She began by placing them, one by one, in the microwave for 2 minutes.
Then took them out, poked holes in them, and put them back in the micro for 3 minutes.
When the cooking machine pinged, she promptly took them out, wrapped them in foil, and let them sit on the counter for 5 minutes.
Then she unwrapped them, their flesh hot and soft, and sliced them in half…
She scooped out their guts, and then using a large spoon, scooped out their flesh and put it in a big bowl…
Then, she used this recipe here, to make a butter crust.
While the crust dough chilled in the fridge, she popped the pumpkin babe flesh in the food processor, and turned it into mush.
She popped the mush into a big bowl and then……..
Cinnamon, allspice, ginger & sugar infused the house…
Through the scents of the spices, a tingle and glimmer of the holidays embraced her.
She thought to herself as she mixed, about how she didn't mind crowds of people and over-zealous decor and frill during the holidays. In fact, she quite loved it. She couldn't wait. It had been a long summer, filled with much goodness and also, many tears. A long summer indeed.
She continued mixing, as scents with memories going back to age 3, plinekty plinkie plinked around the room…
By the way, she used this recipe here for her filling.
Then she rolled out her crust, put it in a pie dish (attempting a cute edging), and poured in her mixture. And, since she had extra crust dough and mixture, she made a tiny pie for one…
With that, 2 of her sugar baby pumpkins slowly became…
Pie.
Pumpkin pie.
(Oh and, she had to pull the pie out of the oven, and put foil around the crust early in baking, as it was browning too quickly for her liking)
It was late at night, as she thought about munching the entire baby pie on her own, and not letting anyone know there ever had been a baby pie 😉
Mister Lovee arrived right in time to share the little guy, as the girl reminded him, "doesn't my piiieee look deeeeeelicious???" tee heeee.
In the morning, they found mooore peaches and, gasp, roses ready to come inside. How there were roses again in such desert heat was just unbelievable. She was certain it was Baby, keeping her busy. Keeping her smiling. Yes yes, that must have been it.
They marveled at the flavor of the pie. It was unusually delicious. It was unlike anything they had really ever tasted…
As they ate pumpkin pie for breakfast, they read all the information the girl had found about making pumpkin pie at home, and you will never guess what they found???
Most of the canned pumpkin pie filling and frozen pumpkin pies contain very little pumpkin, and mostly butternut squash. Could it be true, what they read?
Who knows.
All they knew was that, their pie was divine.
They felt lucky.
The girl felt the whole thing to be quite surreal. To grow your own pumpkins and cook them up, and eat them? She had only dreamed of such things. She watched longingly as other folks did it.
And now, to be eating her own grow-ables felt like the greatest gift of mother nature.
She was inspired to grow more edibles.
She was hooked. No matter how much she wanted to sleep in. The garden won.
It's odd, how the desire to see what is growing day to day, gets you out of bed that early.
But you know what else? The fact that nature gives you everything you need is astounding. Seeds inside of flowers and pumpkins a plenty. Worms to make your soil delicious, thorns so plants can protect themselves, and on and on….
Just amazing.
The girl was in love with nature, collecting her seeds for next year, and being all around thankful to the earth.
Will she eat the 10 babies in her home now? Or the 20+ babies growing?
Probably 😉
After that pie, how could she not?
And with that, she sang-whispered under the sky…
Pumpkin vine, oh pumpkin vine, high up in the tree, please tell the earth, thanks, from me…
And so friends, that is my delicious yet pointless post, as promised 😉
🖤,V
3 Random's for today.
1) Mammie (my Mom) was my visitor. The best guest a girl could ask for. I love her. She is wonderful. Now, I should tell you, I couldn't stand my parents in the height of teenagedom, but around 20 it all changed, drastically, all by itself. I always loved them, but I didn't always like them. I was a freedom wanter from the womb ;) Then one day, I adored them and liked them, quite much.
2) My old cell died, so I had to promptly save any old photos and numbers stored in it. I found a photo of me, Mombie (mom) and Dad, pixelated and tiny, from my birthday (I didn't even know of this photo). It would have been my favorite family photo, sans the pixelation and the faces my parents were making. It looked like they had been fed pure lemon juice soup, hence the hearted faces :)
(ps: I wore bangs my whole life, until I was 26 or 28ish, so to see myself with no bangs is always odd)
3) We (you and me) ARE having a virtual halloween party again this year (if you want to, that is). I promise. Links to previously held parties are in the left hand sidebar.

a really delicious post!!!
I have never had pumpkin pie-can you believe it? Maybe I will make myself one for the halloween party!
I love that rose and peach and pie picture-so beautiful! When I went to Great Dixter the other week the pumpkins were growing on giant heaps of what I don’t know-maybe they were using their compost heaps in a clever way. But they looked so impressive-from a distance there were three humps like the loch ness monster. Have a lovely weekend!
xx
Mmmm, pumpkin pie is my favorite! And that vine growing up so high is amazing. And, yes please, I would dearly love a Halloween party!
Yum! I’m getting very excited for the fall! I’m ready for chai tea, pumpkin soup, and cozy sweaters. I’m so happy to have found your blog. Such inspiring beauty!
Dearest Miss Vanessa
I could almost smell your pumpkin pies! Yummy! Delicious smells! The pies look so scrumptious!
Oh! Graphics 45 (a scrapbooking co.) has the most wickedly adorable ‘Hallowe’en in Wonderland’ die cut tags, and 12 x 12 sheets all about Alice in Wonderland goodies ‘Halloween style’. It’s funny, as they portray the Cheshire Cat in black and orange stripes, which is how I painted my paper clay Cheshire Cat, as the original prints in some of the Alice books, have a tinge of orange to ‘Chessey’.
Yes, summer has flown! But I absolutely relish the thought of fall and the cooler weather…I can already feel it in the air.
Sugar and spice and all things nice…thanks for sharing! So happy to hear your visitor was your very own, special, loving Mammie.
XOXO sprinkled with fairy dust…
Miss Teresa
I know it must have been hard for you to cook your pumpkin babies. But so glad you did. Makes my mouth water for a pumpkin pie. Who says it’s just for Thanksgiving. I am excited about the Halloween party! Let’s get started!!

How special that your mom came to visit.
My mom is my best friend and miss seeing her all the time. I am now in Texas and she is in Nevada. But we do talk for hours at a time every couple of days.

Yay! I guessed right yesterday when I wondered in print if it was your dearest Mammie who came to visit! I know you love her so much, so I bet y’all had a wonderful time.
I am so impressed that you made that pie from your very own pumpkids. You called them your babies, so I shall call them your pumpkids! Hee hee! What a feeling of accomplishment you must have felt!

Oh goody, I cannot WAIT for Halloween! I wish I could start decorating right now, but that would be a little odd, no?!! Sadly, there is not a pie pumpkin to be found in the entire city of Dallas at this time. Such torment! Have a slice for me!!
xoxo, Andrea
YAY for fresh pumpkin! I love making my little pumpkin babies into pie and pumpkin cupcakes and pumpkin bread. Heck, I have been known *looks furtively around, sort of guilty* to eat it right out of the shell once it has been roasted…yeah, actually, I have burned my tongue more than once, LOL.
Hurrah! I have a baby pumpkin growing now! I can’t wait to make a pie of my own 🙂
Best of luck with the others!

Alas, I have no random things to share with you today – I’m a bit tired from our adventures outdoors…oh the wondrous things we found today! 🙂
Oopsie…HURRAY for a Halloween bash!!!! Sounds fabulous – I can’t wait (last year we were away and I couldn’t participate). xoxo Theresa
Oh what a delightfully devilish tale of pumpkin preparations. My wee little ones are still attached to their vines, but I know not if I’ll make them into pie. Maybe I’ll try your recipe ;-).
1 Random thought: I still wear bangs at the ripe old age of 48 ;-O. If it weren’t for the fact that my husband is afraid of my forehead (I think my forehead is perfectly lovely) I wouldn’t have bangs at all…tee hee!
Love Me
Atop the twinkling of a star – a green and orange patch did appear,
And rained down in the morning dew.
To all the plants of the girl whoo-
Remembered to dance without her shoes.
Pies and dreams filled her water pail,
poouring the river from the well.
Five little pumpkins all dressed up,
Soup or pie or cookie was’Up?
Dancin with dawn and her morning glow,
Given growth to Baby so flyin too grow.
Butternut pumpkins gourd stash-
Orange and gold my sails a cast,
carry mee to the seas feeling loving Baby.
Roses looms weave my tears light Baby delight.
Oh what a lovely pie. It looks absolutely scrumptious! I could imagine the lovely scent of spices in the air! And thank you so much for sharing the recipe!
Oh, and a little extra note: my 9 year old daughter just LOVES your art. She’s saving her money, penny by penny, to shop in your Etsy store. See, she loves to draw, and has been doodling ever since she could hold a pencil in her hand (without chewing on it).
Your art is very inspiring to her.
We hope you have a lovely day today!
Pumpkin babies killer you are!! Though I forgive 100% you since you baked them up into a delicious and intoxicating pie.
Have a creative day VV.
Really did like hearing your voice!! And thoughts!!
I have a feeling I know exactly where you are this very moment. Please give my best regards to Mother Nature and your Mr. Lovee.

So excited about the Halloween party this year. Can’t wait!!
It’s a beautiful misty day here. Looking at those delicious pumpkin pies and thinking about the upcoming Halloween party makes me almost glad that autumn will be here soon.
Love your pumpkin story. The pies looks just delicious. Now you have inspired me to want pumpkin pie, but not quite yet. My pumpkins are not ready to pick. Something to look forward to another day.

Purrs and whiskers!
Romeo and “her”
WHAT a hottie.
Well, I, for one, LOVE halloween and if there’s no party, it’s like… well
not having a party. I still go all halloween on the inside.
I’m ready!!! I mean, to start getting ready!
Yum! Making a pie from the pumpkin fresh is the best. There is also a special type of pumpkin you can grow that is called a cooking pumpkin. They grow to about the size of a volleyball and their inner and outer are a brownish color….oh my….they have the best flavor!
Looks like your pie didn’t last long!
I would love to join the Halloween party!
My goodness, I can’t believe how easy it looks to make this pie totally from scratch. I’ve printed it out and am overly excited to try it.
I stumbled upon your blog months ago by accident and I just love visiting. I love seeing the world through your eyes…
Made a pumpkin pie using the recipe you did. was really good!! thank you for sharing it!
Vanessa!!!
Por supuesto que participo “Halloween party”!
