It's been one of those weeks you know…
Where everything happens at once. Including, party, after party, after party and still two more to go before Sunday. Looking at this picture, tells me so much about my future and the life I am living now. Haha. Unconventionally seated & covered in frosting. Yep, that could be the story title of my life 😉
So, why have we been partying like it's 1976 you ask? Well, let's see, the Mad Hatter had a birthday that was celebrated wonderfully…
Lots of gooooooodies… I even baked a chocoflan.
And, believe it or not, I am getting ready to bake another chocoflan for another special birthday party. In between all of that I have been painting like crazy…

On Tuesday, I went to my mailbox and found quite the surprise. I had forgotten completely about one of my illustrated children going to Iford. That is, until I received the internationally stamped kind of parcel that makes you wonder where it came from (no return address)…
Inside -
If you are anywhere near Iford, or will be this summer, you might want to visit here… I could live under this bridge…
Imagine, opera set in an enchanted English Garden? This is the place! The 2009 opera festival season at Iford is Carnival themed this year. You can see all the dates and details at the link above.
The programme is beautiful – filled with information and great photos…
3 operas will be put on this summer (as well as other events).
One of my little illustrated gals is playing over on the pages of the programme with The Barber of Seville… (below)
I am beyond delighted. I hope she is having fun!! 😉 While she is enjoying a British operatic summer just outside Bath, what are we doing??
Today I am going to prepare for a wee little party journey. Yep, 2 more parties to go. My Dad's Birthday and Father's Day… All the men in my life have a birthday this week…
I am going to visit the 2 characters that dressed me up like a mouse when we had freak snow in Arizona around 1979 (they had no choice, I suppose it was the closest thing to a snow suit, ha!).
Did I ever tell you about those 2 characters, who I lived in a gingerbread like house with, before we lived way out in the desert? I had them all to myself until I was 5 and a half years old…
Yes, you guessed correctly. My parental units. Mom and Dad. I didn't realize until I was looking at some old photos a few years ago (that I was forbidden to steal, which is why you are getting bad photos of old photos) that they are the ones who infused my life with whimsy.
They always told me to reach for my dreams, and not give up. They were very strict on grades and such, but were totally open about us being free spirits… They love travel, the arts, and unusual places, and are very open minded…
I am still dressed the same, 27 years later (below). This photo reminds me a lot of my life now. Of course, I do love being a woman, and an adult. But I like my life infused with childlike splendor… It's funny, it took "growing up" to understand what parts of a youthful life I wanted to keep in my world today… Funny how that works…
Growing older, in order to grow younger, sort of thing…
When I was little I used to wonder how on earth I was ever going to love any other man in the whole wide world, more than I loved my Dad? The answer I have found for myself is, you won't, and that is what is so special.
My Dad was (and is) a kind of storybook Dad. My Mom as I have shared, is a bit of a magical being herself, beyond wonderful. Such selfless parents.
They are both amazing human beings. Since Father's day and my Dad's birthday are around the corner, and I rarely talk about my Dad, I am going to tell you a bit about him…
(I was 5 years old below, and used to put in my own curlers. I also stole my Mom's clothes and make-up when I could, and would drag her huge high-heels around. Did you do that too?)
You see, to me, my Dad was larger than life. A great Dad, a busy businessman. Yet, would drop anything and everything for his daughter. He still does. He loves to tell stories and sayings and proverbs about life. He has been a bit of a best friend all my life. Talking to me for hours and hours on end, for as long as I can remember being alive.
We have special sayings between eachother. Private to us, and used like a secret language…
He has stacks and stacks of me and him on tape when I was little. Audio recordings. He would say, talk to the people in the recorder Vanessa. And I would say, What people? I don't see any people. I was about 3. There are many home movies of all of us kids too. I want to get those transferred on to DVD someday…
I wonder, now that I write this, if my Dad sees himself as a bit of a Life Guide for anyone whose ears he gets a hold of. Yes, that might be it. He cares, and he is lovely…
Yet, knowing my personality a tiny bit, you can imagine that I used to torture him. He has always called me his Chinese Water Torture, while illustrating this by using his finger to tap on his forehead.
I suppose he says this (jokingly of course) because I wouldn't give up, on anything, ever. Including wanting his attention or something…
As you can tell from the above picture, face to face attention with those I love, has never been good enough for me. I sort of need to throw a leg over, and pinch lightly, while I am talking eye to eye, hahaha ;) Although, Mister Lovee gets that now ;) Perhaps it is the literal form of "Capturing a person's attention." Only, I lean more on the capturing side of things…
I wish I could tell you oodles more, but there is too much to tell. All I can say is, I love these two. They are beyond words to me, Mombie and Dad. So, I am off to spend a few days with them…
Mombie is always good at sporting some of my jewelry ;)
I need to scan some of these photos while I am there, they are so pixelated and weird…
And one day, hopefully soon, I might even be going to the beach. I need a real vacation, I do, I do…
Maybe after the Mad Tea Party? White rabbit time is getting closer… EEEEK!
Oh and before I go - If you are a Grey Gardens die hard from way back (or of the recent variety), you might love this book, Grey Gardens Scrapbook (lots of transcripts too). As you know, 1994 was the year I fell in love with the two Edies, and I found this book delightful. BUT!!! Guess what???
There is an audio CD hidden in the back!!!! And it is goooood. I listened to it twice yesterday while painting. It gives some extra insight. Much more real than anything I have heard or seen, in my opinion… And, the real thoughts right after both gals saw the Grey Gardens documentary for themselves. Quite different from anything that has been portrayed…
I also am enjoying a scrapbook of the Maysles work throughout the years (not just Grey Gardens). Delightful as well…
And, I re-ordered a hard cover of Frida's Diary/Art Journal. I had given my last two copies away…
Sooooo, those books are coming with me… I am only going for a few days, will be back Sunday night or so. I will be checking my e-mail while away…
Mister Lovee will stay and man the fort, as he has workers coming this weekend. It seems, my office will finally be closer to done, I HOPE!
He is such a good Lovee. This morning my tea cup was waiting for me, surrounded by groceries. I love him for doing most of the shopping! And he is a bit of a gourmet shopper to boot. Always brings me the good stuff…
Now, I have to figure out what items from my wardrobe to take with me…
I am a terrible packer. I just stuff it ALL into a bag and deal with it at my destination point…
Now remember – don't have…
🖤 ,V
ps: I will have internet service on my wee trip, and will be checking my e-mail. As well as adding anyone to the party list who wants to join!!
pss: I adore making desserts, I adore looking at desserts, and when I am in the mood, I love a bite or two (but mostly sugar gives me a headache). 98% of the time, I would rather have savory, or a nice dinner instead of dessert. Is that weird? My Mom loves dessert any time. Mister can eat raw sugar with a spoon all day and be happy. And, he always smells like cookies. He eats bags of those chalky Valentine hearts all by himself in one sitting…
Hmmmm, could be an interesting topic…

Wishing you safe travels and maybe pack some tums for the oodles of cake & frosting that will be eaten 😉
OH, Miss V—
What a similar age we grew up in!!!! I have so many similar pictures that have faded to that lovely ‘memory color’, too.
Would you believe I have the exact same bunny suit? And cassette tapes of my mother telling me to “Say words into the microphone,” and I scream “Words into the microphone!!!!!” Then I get convinced it is NOT in fact working, and keep yelling, “Turn it ON! Turn it ON first!”
Your dad looks charming. You know who he could fill in for? (Not that he looks like Mr. Ricardo Montalban -spelling?–but he has that feel) The dapper Fantasy Island man. Would he be a good one? You might have to rent him a midget, though.
Happy Birthday, Lovee!!!! It’s funny how we never quite see him. Just a snippet of socks and curly hair from time to time.
Have a good trip!!! Bring it ALL–that’s what I always do. You might need it. Oh poop—my baby just grabbed and handful of necklace and now there are beads rolling all about the floor. Must go.
Hi Miss V,
I just wanted you to know how much I am looking forward to the upcoming SPECTACULAR Mad Hatter Tea Party. I also wanted to deliver a personal invitation of my own. I am throwing a Where Bloggers Create party. Inspired by the magazine Where Women Create and also by the huge numbers of talented, creative people I have met on my blogging adventure. I would absolutely love it if you would join me and invite all your creative friends. I know I would love to see where you get all your creative mojo, and I’m sure everyone else would too!!!
Talk to you soon!!
Karen
Hi Vanessa,
You are lucky to have had your parents to yourself for 5 1/2 years; I’m the fourth so I got lost in the shuffle–especially after they decided to adopt 2 more… I have one picture with my dad and none with my mom when I was young. The one I do have is very special; I think I shall do a post with it for Father’s day in honor of my dear daddy who passed away around 6 years ago. I sure miss him; be sure to give your dad extra hugs and kisses–he sounds like a great person…
Hugs, Barb
You are just so very adorable. I love how you view your dad and mombie. So lucky you are. So lucky they are! Have a wonderfully magical trip. Soak up the parental spoilage! (You know it will happen!)
Enjoy the day! Erin
PS I wanted to particapate in the Mad Tea Party, but we’re going to be camping at Pine Crest… Oh, poo! Have fun anyway!
Barb
love the old pics-awesome! And I gotta get that Frida book! Have a nice trip!
V~
Oh, how I love those pictures 🙂 Too cute!! They remind me of the pictures I have of me when I was quite a bit younger with my Mom. And it so wonderful that you have such a great relationship with your father. The picture of your mom and dad is just too cute!! They look so happy!!
Oh and…the Opera festival sounds DIVINE…oh how I wish I could go. Oh what fun that would be.
Enjoy your time away but don’t stay gone for too long 🙂
Oh and Happy Belated to your Mr. Lovee!!
Oh and on the dessert topic..I’m am definately a sugar-o-holic….mostly chocolate. I can’t get enough. I need an intervention (sigh)
Kylee
EEk i lost my first post!
But, I was saying, how could we possibly have alot of fun without the girl who sits unvoncentionally smothered in frosting??Why she’s practically *always* the belle of the ball!
And, I am digging your astuteness on the clever play on wordage- “capturing someone’s attention” …I’ma gonna try the bitin thing, hooha!
And then, oh my Ms. Opera! Congratulations on such cultural heights dahling! (Oh but that place is totally swoonworthy) Let’s practice our opera: mimimimimimimimimiiiiiiii aaaeeeiiiooouuuuu
Harrumph. Happy Celebratory days to V’s Boys! Er, V’s Men. Um, Admirers of Veevala who are male!
Have fun (oh your parents are sooo pretty together!) and isnt going to a parent’s home the best? Snug as a bug in a rug late at night when the house is quiet and you have a stack of the best of the best books…nothing else like that!
But oh! Go to the beach! Inner children love the beach! And i love the photo of you in white with the white backdrop, knowing even then that it wasnt in the cards to do cheesy smiles, but rather, toss your hair and stare that camera down til it was tamed…
YIKES i am spamming! LOL
oh, you know, xoxoxoxoxoxox Rhonda Roooooo
Hello my dearest! I love the “Mad Hatter” hiding behind the balloons!!! And may I please say, Mombie is just gorgous and looks like she’s so much fun and I even can guess she has a caring quality to her!!!!!?
Take care my dahling!!!!!
How delightful to get a peek at the wee Royal Magical Gypsy, New Age Hippie, the Muse of many. Frida’s Diary/Art Journal is incredibly beautiful. It is ever so important to revisit who we have been at different times in our lives…least we forget our true heart. Wishing you a lovely trip and a most wonderful visit. **blows kisses** Deborah
Oooh, I bought that Grey Gardens Scrapbook too. Isn’t it fabulous?
I love old photos, and yours are just too sweet! And those are very nice things you said about your father!
Have fun on your trip!
Oh have a lovely little jaunt to visit the parents! This is our busy time of year in the birthday department too. My baby turns 3 on father’s day. Sigh. But lots of good fun. I love old pictures, you make me want to go dig some out for Father’s day too.
I never heard of chocoflan till now. I have missed something very special. I now must go and find some to taste. It looks so yummy.
I love the pictures of you as a little one. So cute!! I’m like Mr. Lovee and your mom I can eat sweets every day, all the time and never get bored.
Oooo another mesmerizing post…your cooking & baked goodies look delicioso!!!
I have lots of memories of pink curlers and dress up trunks full of my Granny’s clothes from the 50’s. I would get my hairbrush and use it as a “microphone”, dress up and pretend I was Olivia Newton John…Xanadu was my favorite.
You have a wonderful time celebrating with MR Wonderful, aka Dad. He is one lucky man to have so many beautiful women in his life☺
We are friends with the owner of a fabulous digital transfer business…my hunny Nathan does his web design and technical “stuff”, just tell him Tiffany (&/or Nathan) sent you and he should give you a deal…it is really nice to be able to watch old tapes with out the big projector machines, setting up a screen, having to wind the film into the right place and then it gets jammed and…UGH it’s a pain…this makes it sooo much simpler!

Safe journey and happy timesâ¦
Take care,
Tiffany (Rowan Willow)â¤
You’re so lucky to have such a lovely family.
And that little mouse suit in the snow is the most adorable and the most hilarious thing I’ve seen for a while, hehe.
1. You look adorable covered in cake crumbs and frosting :~)
2. It looks like Mr. Lovee had a very delicious b-day!
3. I think we should all get together and charter a jet and go to Iford~~it looks heavenly!
4. Have a lovely time with your parents!
5. I laughed out loud several times while reading this post :~0
i am getting to know my father after over 20 years apart, although he kept in touch by mail. my father is kind, funny, sweet and loving things i did not think when i was young. i love what i have seen of him so far and feel so sad that my biological mother passed away so early in my life(3yearsold) because i know that our life would have been so different if the love of his life were around.
anyhoo love the old pics,
see you in wonderland
rosey
Oh that chocolate looked divine…happy birthday to all the men, and happy father’s day as well! Your dad sounds like a dream, thank you for sharing him…Have a fantastic trip!!
Mr. Lovee is an angel?!! Remember the movie Michael w/John Travolta? He always smelled like cookies. Well, that certainly explains a lot now doesn’t it? Loved this post kiddo. Nice to see you as a little munchkin with your family. And it certainly explains a lot about you. Enjoy your weekend! Happy day to all!!!!! – Kathy in Chicago
Happy Birthday to all the important men in your life, and Happy Dad’s Day to your special Dad! Enjoy every minute you get with him – life is never the same when your parents are gone! I’m off for a week’s vacation too! So sorry to miss the party!
Happy Birthday to everyone! So many happy occasions!
I loved looking at the older photos, the first couple especially. There’s a carousel on the cake in the first two photographs, and it reminds me of when I was little. We had a carousel on my cake year after year on my birthday, and even had a carnival themed party once. Oh how the wonderful memories start flooding back! 😀
oh that reminds me, I want to sign up for the Mad Hatter party! 🙂
oh oh oh!! how did I miss all this splendid loveliness!?? Happy Birthday to all the birthdayees! And oh, I love all the yellowed 70’s and 80’s pictures……just like mine!! tee hee!! 🙂 Your family looks so wonderful! 🙂 Happy Trip to you, and I hope you get to visit your beach!!
Love all the photos V and looking into your past is always fun! You were (& are 😉 a cutie pie, tee hee…love that you have always been ‘unconventionally seat,’ tee hee. I do hope you have a wonderful trip to see your dad and mombie…that’s always fun visiting fam. You have been one busy party girl…I figured you were busy busy creating your wonderful art. Chat soon,
Jamie 🙂
It is so enriching to travel through other times. You come with a different perspective and leave with insight. The past times can be sweet as honey or bitter as lemons. The joy is that you can view them from another dimension!! Happy Birthday to the two lovely men in your life!!
Hugging you
SueAnn
oh, your parents sound FANTASTIC!!! mine weren’t supportive of my artisitc side and to this day still find me a bit odd. it is lovely to read about the support and encouragement you received!
and that mouse suit. fabulous!!!
i am exactly the same way about sugar – i would rather have something savory. if i want something sweet it is usually ONE piece of dark, hand made chocolate. then i am satisfied!
have a great trip and enjoy your visit!!!
Nostalgia. We can all do with a bit of nostalgia. And we can also let the light in and let go of things, like you said. Thank you for the reminders that life is GOOD! Have a great trip! And I’m getting chills just thinking about the Mad Tea Party coming up. I need to rush and get things done for it.Yay!
Cheers!

Darling pictures! I love your crazy little outfits, too cute. Give your dad a great big hug! I grew up without a dad, Im not sure what its like to really have a friend like that.
I do know that having a dad is like having all the gold in the world.
So to you and your dad and all good dads in the world, HAPPY FATHERS DAY from me
<3HurricaneKassi
Iford reminds me of my trip to Luxembourg!
I don’t think there could be a cuter or more adorable snow bunny — er, um…wait, I mean MOUSE in the entire world. LOL
You make me smile.
Wow ! Vanessa I love your beautiful Frida Painting! I think you should do a self portrait in that style! You are an amazing artist! It would be so fun to see how you see yourself!!! See you at the tea party!!!
xoxo Sheri DeBow
Oh I have just stumbled upon your blog and have been so inspired! You’ve really lifted my spirits. I realize I have been much too serious with life and need to explore and imagine and dream more. A little brandy in my tea might not hurt either! I have loved every minute of your Mad Tea Party and maybe, just maybe I could pull one together for next year (if you continue with this tradition!)
Thank you for lifting me out of the dark today!
