Early morning brings a glimmer of light through the windows. It's the same every morning. A puppy stands by her bedside, making squeaky noises until she ever so slightly opens her covers and he jumps in. They cuddle. It's the warmest place on earth, cuddled up next to her furry child.
This was the same girl who was appalled in years past, at folks cuddling in bed with their furry creatures. Wait, strike that, this wasn't the same girl.
This was a different girl. A fur embracing girl.
So, in that bed, human her and furry he…
Cuddled, under a roof, in a love shackling.
She whispered to him about Santa visiting soon, and the meaning of Christmas. His daddy could explain Hanukkah later 🙂
As she told him this tale, she thought about all the things about life she wanted to tell him. Things he couldn't possibly know. Like about Santa, and tooth fairies, and Easter bunnies, and and, leprechauns.
She realized she had lifetimes of tales to tell him.
She almost got overwhelmed with the realization of it all, but she quickly calmed herself…
Simply sticking to the tale of old Saint Nick for now, on this very beloved first day of December.
He looked at her, this furry boy, his head slightly cocked to one side in amazement as she told her tale. She knew he understood. In some way, he understood.
And so they made a pact, to bake cookies and candy orange peels, and paint and make elves, while waiting ever so impatiently for Christmas morn at Granny and Grampy's house.
Him and her, she and he.
What a nice day to welcome December…
My favorite month.
The month I was born in.
The month when everyone goes crazy cutting out snowflakes and making gingerbread. Readying for family visits and all that the holiday season brings…
I am almost done with a handful of little faces, and on my way to keep working along 😉
See you super soon!
ps: Often I forget about older posts, however, this morning I enjoyed looking at holiday 2008, here at AFT. Can't wait to get snowflake cutting.
pss: It is cold here, can you believe it? 17'F in the morning, with no humidity. Just dry cold. I know it might not be cold to you, but it is to us. We had a cold snap that brought in the freezing temps, turning most of my garden brown and crispy. But that's okay. It has me dreaming about what to plant in spring, along with what seeds to plant now.
psss: We watched and loved The Pillars of the Earth, have you seen it? Great cast. We watched the whole series in two nights on Netflix. We got a tad addicted 🙂

Oh boy it has been cold! But still nothing like where I moved from. My parents tell me there is lots of snow on the ground and it is freezing cold, and I smile that it is supposed to be in the 70s again here. I do like AZ. I love your fur cuddle pictures! My furry (feline) boy paws at me until I lift up the covers and then he goes under, turns around, and comes back out just enough so that his head is out of the blankets and on the pillow right next to me like a person. It is so cuddly it makes it harder to get up in the morning! I now must be off to work at Chantilly, happy December!
Wow! that’s cold…brrrr.. Tonight we have a cold front moving through South Florida, and will be waking up to temps in the low 50’s. We’ll be bundled up like snowbunnies in the morn. Yay! Time to drink some Abuelita!!
It’s even “cold” in Florida today, with a high of 64 degrees and a possible low of 49! Normally I’m a *hot house flower* and prefer warmer temps, however this is a lovely way to bring in the Christmas feeling. I’m going to make bread and cookies this weekend and light a fire. Yay.
so charming and whimsical, the photographs too. Happy December!
Oh BURRRR, V!
I love Matty snuggle shots.
So cozy.
Hey-
Rufus Sewell is HAWT.
That man is my cup of tea.
Oh–and I LOVE it when I get to post up at the beginning….whee! I feel like I got to read the breaking news first. Imadork.
Je découvre votre joli monde, j’en suis ravie et charmée !
A très bientôt.
Aurélia
It is really cold here in michigan….26 F.
We had our first snowfall of the season. About two inches fell and it is still dusting the earth. Roads were a litle slick but if you knew what you were doing you would be safe. It is the other crazy drivers that are dangeous. My furry girls keep us warm.
awww so snuggly :):)
We had our *first* snowfall here this morning–love it!! Much different from the rainy 50s yesterday!
swoon….I just love your tales….AND I whole heartedly agree with letting the pup snuggle under cover. Well, mine sleeps in his own room, then romps the stairs to snuggle for morning coffee. Wondrous!
one of the things i miss oh so much is snuggle time in bed with my beastie… he wouldn’t get under the covers, but he would cuddle beside me and i would wrap my arms around him, his head under my chin and i would tell him stories and it was so wonderful… i miss him so…
i went and looked at your link from 2008 and i think tomorrow after my morning errands it will be a snowflake cutting out day! 🙂

sometimes u scare me- i went back through your posts over the weekend and stumbled across that one, and one where you said your dad said we need to have our own cheering section, lving inside of us…and ever since then I’ve been saying things like “Yay, me!” and “Go, me!”
Hee.
Furry love. bliss.
Hey-you know they say the animals could speak at the stroke of midnight Christmas eve..what tales do you suppose Matty wants to tell you? 😉
Tell Mr. Lovee Happy Hannukah!
XOXOXOXOXVVIVIVIVIVIXOXOX Roo
PS that deer is the cutest. I’ve seen it peeking out at us in a couple posts…
What’s it’s name?
I love that you love dogs now… because dogs rule and cats drool.
Oh, sweet pictures.
I love December, too. Tree up, village out, cards started…Much more to do.
I loved Pillars of the Earth. I read the book last year and loved it.
LOOOOVE Pillars of the Earth. The book is even better than the show!!

It seems like ages since I’ve visited (general life management and taking care of sick hubby has taken up so much of my time lately!) So I was treated to three whole posts this morning – *bliss*!
Matty is such a sweetie, and your Thanksgiving sounded just magical…I think I gained a few lbs just LOOKING at that cheesecake photo, hehe…
Wishing you and the Mister the warmest holiday season, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah!!
🖤 Carolee
IF only I lived close enough so we could have a day of baking together, sharing stories of Christmas’ gone by. The smell of cinnamon in the air and goodness im the oven. If only we lived close enough to sit and cut out snowflakes together and be silly crafty for an afternoon. If only I lived close enough for us to celebrate our birthdays together…ribboned parcels making us squeal with delight. Matty letting me pet him and tell him stories about blogging and how we “met”. Mr. Lovee having to leave the room because our carrying on is driving him nuts! HA! Oh yes, if only I lived closer than the telephone…….in truth I am happy w2e at least have that….because we can still share silliness and stories all while in jammies!
Thank you for your help yesterday and your compliments on my kitchen!!
Lots of December love my friend!
Lisa
Happy December to you!! I too love snuggling with my fur babies, of course mine aren’t quite as large as Matty, just small Chihuahuas, but they are still warm and cuddly.
Enjoying your posts as always!
Take Care,
Tracy M.
I have a chihuahua too! (a tiny fur baby) Your sister is so right! Cats seem like they’re always planning something sneaky….
Looked at your 2008 Christmas post – love your dioramas in the shadow boxes….and your abundant attitude….
Ordered American Junk after seeing it somewhere on here – WOW – there is no way to see all of that book at once (made me feel good about my thrift store addiction!)
Fur babies and Magical snowflake cutting times are such cozy dreams!! 🙂 Thank You for sharing such treats!! I think I just might need to do some snowflake cutting for our tree this year!! Yes, ideedy!!!!
🖤 I hope you know-Your the bestest!!!!!
Vanessa:
I was just thinking this morning about snowflake cutting. How I adore to just sit and cut with no pattern in mind. Excited to open up the intricate snowflake to see the surprise pattern! I wonder if all girls born in December love to cut snowflakes, because I was born in December too!!
I was also thinking about my Spring garden this morning, which of course, brought Miss. Vanessa to my mind. I’ve read all your gardening posts, but I don’t recall ever reading that you’ve planted Sweet Peas. They are my most absolute favorite flower in the world!! I plant them from seed every year and I get oodles of beautiful, Heavenly scented bouquets. I bet they would grow wonderfully for you if you planted the seeds in very early spring.
Just a thought!
Kim 🖤
Gerushia’s New World
Your pictures of sweet Matty in bed with you are so very precious. My little fur boy gets in bed with me sometimes, and I find it very comforting.
I want to see the “handful of little faces” you have been working on!
We just had a cold front come in too V, brrr…stay warm! What a sweet cuddly Matty, love the shots.
Jamie 🙂
What are you doing for the little voices this year? lol just kidding. I’ve already started doing some Christmas crafts which is very unusual for me. I usually don’t make anything till after the 15th. I’m inspired by all the blogs I read and of course yours is one of my favorites.
Again thanks for sharing your wonderful world with us.
Katharine
Hi Vanessa!
Thanks for your comment on my new blog (Sweetapolita). I’m so glad you did, because now I am seeing your world–wow. Unbelievable, and talk about inspiring? I am the one who is speechless. Your creativity is infinite. I’ll be checking back often.
Amazing!!
Oh how late am I for this most magical of posts! There is nothing sweeter than waking up in the morning and having a furry baby snuggled next to you (especially in the winter months). My little boy enjoys sleeping over my head on the pillow, while his older sister cuddles up near my hubby’s legs. It’s quite cramped! LOL And when we wake in the morning – there is much barking and bouncing and wet kisses to be had! Matty does understand – and I know my babies understand – when I speak to them. It’s a magical language, isn’t it? 🙂 xoxo Theresa
PS We are still waiting for our snow. We had a most wretched rain and wind storm early in the week (I spent much of the day tending to little leaks) – and it flew a very large branch into our back yard (thankfully nothing – or no one – was hurt.)
you are such an inspiration to me. thank you=) xxx
Okay, it’s official….I simply LOVE your blog!!
I love visiting your beautiful blog!:) And yes, it has gotten cold here in AZ! This is my first winter here! But it is still much better than the winter weather Washington is having!
Hugs,
Myko
Vanessa, Hope today proves to be better! Remember whatever it is…this too shall pass. Beautiful pics.
