Welcome September {Of Pumpkin Vines & Late Summer Blossoms}

The garden went into September with a Little Red Riding Hood Feel.

Garden creatures 16

There is shade from all the growth of the trees and roses due to all the rain, which creates a positively moody ambience.

So, I grabbed my basket and went off to see what I could collect.

I peeked under giant thorny pumpkin leaves, like parasols made just for pumpkin babes.

Garden creatures 12

I gasped at the beautiful long stems I saw.

I collected a bevy of roses and zinnias.

Garden creatures 14

We are rich in zucchini and limes right now, and so I took a few of them as well.

Just as I was strolling around the garden paths I came upon the most glorious sight.

Flowers all over this one towering cactus.

Garden creatures 1

They stuck out of the sides of the cactus with thick stems, opening in a way that resembled a lotus a flower.

The bees were fighting on who got to go in first.

Garden creatures 4

Who wouldn't want to venture into the pollen of these gigantic cactus flowers.

Even I was amazed.

Although, the huuuuge hibiscus do not pale in comparison to the cactus flowers.

Garden creatures 6

And, the hummingbirds know it.

The garden creatures were all abuzz on the first day of one of the loveliest months.

Garden creatures 8

I just stare in awe of the size of everything, what with all the rain (I know I'm a broken record).

But you take all this rain and add all this sun and heat, and everything just grew like mad.

Perfect alchemy for one of my favorite creatures to turn up, the Praying Mantis.

Garden creatures 10

A lovely lovely stroll indeed.

Basket in hand, hope I don't run into the wolf (err mountain lion) in my own Little Red adventures.

Although I am fenced and walled in, so there's that 🙂

Garden creatures 15

The clouds have decided to go away for a few days, the sun is shining bright.

Garden creatures 18

The birds are singing loud, and the dinnerplate dahlias have started to bloom.

This one is called Cafe au Lait.

Garden creatures 7

I see more fairy tale pumpkin babies attempting to start a life, and I root on for the bees who are spreading pollen all around, go bees go!

Garden creatures 11

I've made all sorts of little nooks for you to sit and rest on our stroll…

Garden creatures 5

As the most delicate of roses peek through the leaves.

Garden creatures 17

Roses never cease to amaze me.

The beauty, the layers, the complexity.

This cactus is definitely rivaling all the best garden blossoms this year.

Garden creatures 2

And perhaps, she should just win.

Garden creatures 3

A thorny old cactus covered in blossoms like this, really does take the cake, wouldn't you say?

Garden creatures 13

Then it came time for the day to end.

And so, I stood in a wonderful shower of golden hour light, on the first day of September.

Towering zinnias all around me.

All of us, basking in the nourishment of that daily magic hour.

My Matty turned thirteen on September 1st.

I have so many feelings associated with that.

He's been such a loyal guardian, I love him so much.

He has been here for all the dogs.

He knew Baby (link here), he was here for Miles' entire life, and now he knows Teddy.

I love my dogs so much, I could never describe my deep ardent love for them.

But, if you know, then you know.

I am looking forward to seeing what this month has in store for us.

I know we are all crazy mad about Autumn, and it's a mere 20 days away.

I have something fun to share in the next post (a project I've been working on), and also, I think it's fine time that I photographed and shared my dollhouses.

If you are team dollhouse, raise your hand.

If you want to see them, I will take the time to photograph them in detail.

But for now, I am off to make zucchini bread.

TGIF friends!

Have the bestest day.

Love, Vanessa

ps:

Here is a little video of Matty when he was a baby, found buried deep in my YouTube account.

  8. Dawn Grose says:

Your Garden is always sublime, you have such a Green Thumb, even here in the Desert… you keep everything so lush and green. Autumn is my favorite Season, I revel in all of it. When our Fur Babies get to be Seniors, it is very conflicting how to feel about it, since their lifespans don’t match our own. That said, I have a Blog Friend in Great Britain who is a Senior and still has her Tortoise that she got when she was a very young Child, he will likely outlive her and have to be willed to someone.

    Sweet baby Matty video.
    Love, love the cactus flower.
Oh the abundance of the rain and sunshine.
Your garden is a delight to visit even if only in pictures.

  10. Sarah says:

I didn’t know you had a YT channel! How exciting! I am now a happy subscriber and can’t wait to explore. Also, I am SO EXCITED to see the dollhouses! I have been wanting to see the dollhouses for what seems a very long time indeed, but I try not to be a pest so I’ve been quietly waiting, and now I am THRILLED that viewing dollhouses is close to a reality, SO EXCITED!
OK, I’ll calm down now. I loved these pictures and this adventure into the garden, though I was taken aback about Mountain Lions. I mean….gosh. I’ve said this before but it fits here too so I’ll say it again, the first IG of you I ever saw was a picture of your muddy feet in really cute bright sneakers, and you were talking about how much fun it was to run in a thunderstorm, and I thought, “Wow! This woman is fierce!” so I guess the fact that you go out and play when there might be Mountain Lions fits in, but I just want to say, “Wow” in regard to it. 🙂
Also, as ever, you have given me huge inspiration for my own gardening explorations and plans, and I always thank you for that. It’s cooler here now, so I’m able to get out a bit more, and am feeling really excited about it. Also, so thrilling that the cactus is blooming, they don’t do that all that often, do they?
Anyway, thank you as always for being such a delight dear Vanessa. You are a bright light in this world.

  11. Sarah says:

OH!!! OH OH OH!! And also, actually the most important and I don’t know how I managed to post without it, Happy Birthday to Matty. He is….I’m just such a fan of his, I love his temperment, I love his look, I love his dedication to you, and I love his spirit animal qualities. He’s just a remarkable being. Please give him my most sincere regards. xo

  12. Jen says:

Oh my gosh, I’m dying…the video of Matty as a baby. :0) :0) I’ve always wanted to grow that type of cactus!!! It is a stunner! I’m afraid I’ll kill somehow. With waiter too much or too little water. But, your photos make me want to try, so I’ll give it a go. You’re always an inspiration to me V. Bless xoxoxoxo Jen

  13. Bracken says:
