The creative buzz is such a curious thing. Keeping it alive and nurturing it are crucial factors, that sometimes get forgotten in daily life. I think that whether you create for a living, for fun, for sanity & fulfillment, or for all three (and more), it is important for the creative vibe to branch out, and keep sprouting new baby leaves.
Some of my most favorite things to do, which keep my creative vibes flowing (not limited to clay and paint) are, cooking, crafting, gardening, crocheting, doodling, piano playing & decorating (to name a few).
Doodling, to me, is one of the most important aspects of keeping creativity flowing. No matter how silly or lacking in finesse, a doodle has the ability to simply keep the light, cute and sweet thoughts skipping about. With the chance of sparking something grand.
Does doodling seem childish? I for one, know it kept me from falling off the edge in the classroom. But now, as as adult, I find vast importance in it.
In keeping a light heart.
In losing yourself in it, and taking your mind off heavy things.
Little faces and buckets of hearts keep the soul young, taking us away from the easy to spiral into hum-drum of responsibilities and stacks of chores.
It's silly, it's simple. It doesn't have to be good.
It just keeps us holding on to a thread of sweet simplicity.
And, for me, it just keeps one foot in the door to the vast and most magical world I carry deep in my heart, soul and mind.
Reminders, that they are there. Always there, waiting for me.
Life is complicated. Sometimes hard. Sometimes easy. Sometimes wonderfully amazing, sometimes heart-wrenching.
A doodle a day…
I say 😉
One of my most favorite things, that also keeps my creative buzz alive, is to invent crafts from things I find outside.
I'll see a twig, a stick, a seed pod, and I think, what could I do with this?
Just this weekend I found one of my giant candles melted into the dirt, and I thought, PRESTO! This is just what I needed….
You see, I looove to save flowers.
I press them into books. Fill glass jars with them.
I collect seeds, petals…
Which, from time to time, leads to experiments…
I had this vague memory, of melting crayons and flower findings in kindergarten.
It was so vague.
Did it happen, maybe not 😉
But it lead me to a plan.
I wanted to make a page of memories, of this year's flowers.
Last year I pressed a bunch of my flowers into books, and have done some of that this year too. But, to create a page a year, of petals, how grand would that be?
I took a piece of scrapbook paper, and scribbled on it with wax crayons (not a necessary step), and I shaved (with a cheese tool) a bunch of wax off of my ruined candle.
Then I put a towel on my metal counter.
On top of the towel, I placed a brown paper bag.
Then I put down my scrap book paper, sprinkled with fresh petals.
Then I placed hearty bits of shaved wax all over the petals and paper.
I placed a sheet of wax paper over this, and then covered the wax paper with a paper bag.
Phew 😉
Then I pressed down on the top layer of brown paper with my hot everyday iron.
(To clean your iron when you are done, keep ironing on brown paper bags, until there is no residue left from the wax. Although, I might not iron my favorite frock with the same iron I craft with)
When I felt that I had ironed enough, as I could see lots of wax coming through my brown paper bag, I lifted the bag.
This piece still has the wax paper covering it, but you can see your paper below quite clearly.
I then took the piece, still covered with wax paper over to my a/c, and held it in front of the vents until it was thoroughly cooled.
Then I slowly peeled the wax paper away…
Slowly pulling it back, to reveal the entire piece…
I then cut my fave section out of the entire piece.
It is so much prettier in person than any photo can convey.
And, holding it up to the light is dreamy.
Mister Lovee wanted me to share his gushing about how much he adored this, like really really really. But, I told him that made him sound biased and obnoxious.
🙂
The page is totally flat, with no lumps and bumps, and bonus, I can smell the beautiful scent of my lime candle. Mmmmm.
The wax page looks really great behind glass, or framed…

I definitely want to make a couple of these to use in my garden journal. I wish I had made one every year, for the last 17 years. From city garden to country garden.
Alas, one must begin somewhere.
I will date it, and sew a tiny gold thread through the edges.
So, there you have it, who knew your old heat ruined candles could be saved?
For now, I am hanging my flower wax page on the inside of my cupboard because it smells sooo good!
I have so many fun things in the works. And I am anxiously waiting for a shipment of delicious autumnal cards (chomping at the bit!) for the shop.
I have also devoured the fall 2011 issue of Victoria several times over.
It is 105'F today, but somewhere out there, a feather of fall tickles the soul, I'm sure.
Off I go for now…
See you sooooon!
Love, V

Vanessa:
I find it so curious that, by coincidence, I am often on my twitter when I see your blog post announcement run through my feed!
Anyway…I adore your waxy flower page. I do remember creating something similar in kindergarten, but we didn’t use flower petals, we used lots of colorful crayon shavings and it made a sort of stained glass window. But….I love your flower petal creation even more. Isn’t it exciting to make lovely creations from the little doo-dads and treasurs that you find in your yard? I love that.
I’m finding myself in a crafty mood lately. I’ve been hermiting and slaving in my studio getting ready for my show in Sept. But really, what’s been on my mind the whole time is Halloween crafts!!
Have a fabulous day and stay cool in that 105 degree heat!
xoxo

Gerushia’s New World
I want to try this! Right now! I’ll need to buy another iron for crafting though; my hubby would not be too pleased with wax on his crisp work clothes;-). Oh, who am I kidding- I never iron clothes! Still…Thanks for sharing!
Ohhh, and I did want to add that I love your doodles. I think it’s super important to just doodle. My particular art requires that I be sitting at my desk, huddled over my small format piece….painting, cutting, tinting, and gluing. Sometimes, it’s confining. So….I bring my journal with me everywhere I go just to doodle in. It’s such a joy to be able to sit freely in a comfy chair and make fun little nothings….wee little scribbles and faces and animals that come freely to my mind without “composing” before-hand.
Doodling is grand!!
Kim 🖤
Gorgeous flower page, Vanessa, and I love that it smells like lime!
I enjoy creative doodling, too. In fact I was doing that last night. I have admired paper garlands that I’ve seen on craft blogs, so yesterday I got out some hole punches and punched out different circle shapes plus a starburst shape. I got some yarn and sandwiched it between shapes and ended up with several feet of something like this:—O–o–*–o– . I used mostly card stock and some thinner poster board. My hole punches started to complain and strain and couldn’t get through the thicker poster board, so I knew I needed to quit that! I am enjoying doodling on the garland with glitter glue, paint pens, and sharpies, plus I have glued buttons on some. I am striving to make it more Bohemian! It’s fun and relaxing!
Me encanto el papel con los petalos de flores, parecen mariposas.
Hugs
0o0o I love the pressed flowers, I may have to try that out..:)
and I totally agree with a doodle a day..and I love your doodles, they are so lovely..
Thank you for this post. I have been feeling a bit slumpish in the creativity department. For years I was a habitual doodler (is that a word?)and I have fallen off the doodle wagon. Now where did I put that pencil?
Hugs,
Lisa
The flowers are absolutely amazing…..so very pretty! I used to doodle as a kid….I think I’m going to have to give doodling another try. You are so inspirational!
What a lovely idea to make such a memory! I think that I wil do that more often to keep the memories alive. hugz….peebee
What a beautiful way to preserve the memory of your garden! And as always I adore all of your doodles 🙂 ~Lauren
oooooh! This looks like endless fun! I should very much love to while away an afternoon making waxen floral sheetS OF PAPER….YOU ARE A WONDER DEARIE!! thanks bunches for the wee tutorial!! : )
You are so creative and have amazing doodles so I guess you were never bored in classroom!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful wax paper art, it´s wonderful!
And I also love your garden, it makes me dream of childhood and magic things!
Very cool idea, sis!
I love this Vanessa…when I went back to school a couple of years back, I found myself doodling again – something I hadn’t done in years. I miss it – time to get the pen and paper out again…and I LOVE your wax paper and candle idea – I love to press flowers from my garden too, but this just takes it to another level – thankyou for sharing…you are a clever little fairy xxx
You inspire me so!
I love that quote “A doodle a day, I say.”
So wise. Doodles truly are magical.
And the flower page is gorgeous! When I saw it I thought it would be cool to create some paper lanterns using this technique. Thank you! Mister Lovee was justified in his gushings!
Miss V, love the waxed petal pages! Very, very pretty! When I put my nose very close to the screen, I think I can almost detect a faint lime scent!
I see you are also a Victoria fan. I had been a devoted Victoria fan from their beginning, was so very sad when they stopped publishing and so elated when they resumed a few years later! I loved the first time around better, but still look forward to every issue! I have kept every issue and love browsing through them from time to time.
I believe that the perfect spot for an afternoon tea would be found at the end of the wisteria tunnel on page 52 . . . what do you think? 😉
How beautiful your flower creation looks against your collection of brilliant butterflies. Such a clever idea Vanessa! Your garden snapshot with the even ever so fanciful clever bench made from logs and some kind of reused metal piece is just as brilliant. Your garden is so lush and inviting and I do think Mr. Gnome (what did U Name him?), is keeping perfect watch on it as we speak!
I <3 Victoria magazine! I kept several of the older original issues and love to glance at them every now and again. 😉 &<3
helloooo dear vanessa!! was thinking of you this morning and wanted to send some xoxo your way sweet friend. happy day to you!!!
Hi Vanessa,
I love your wax project, very fun! I’m an art teacher. I have 450 students. I teach them to zentangle, which is meditative doodling. Throw it in your google search if your not already aware of it. I believe that doodling is a way of talking to my creator and creative team, or god and the angels or the muses or whatever you want to call the energy that comes through us as we create. Sometimes I need to get out of the way and let them come through in the process and not focus so much on the product. I want my students to have these conversations with creativity or doodling, to keep their creativity fresh and their confidence on the upswing.Intuitive painting is another way to access an unbelievable loving energy that helps with the personal expression. These paintings are not for other peoples eyes, and freedom is the name of the game. I used to be all about product. I pretended I was trying to balance product and process, but that was a lie. As I have learned to embrace my doodle moments I have journeyed home into the arms of the muses.
Always I can find inspiration here…either giving myself permission to sit in the splendor of your tea garden or gathering blooms to create a wax page in my garden journal!!
such joy!

Ohh the pressed flowers and candle is a wonderful idea!! Love them!
Your doodles are lovely, Vanessa! It is certainly not childish – it is a good stress reliever and creative motivator. 🙂 And I adore what you did with the pressed flowers. I love foraging for treats when we go for nature walks. Last spring my hubby and I found the most beautiful cedar roses! At first we did not know WHAT they were – we just thought they were fancy pine cones! We often fill our pockets with nature’s bounty. And I discovered a love for waxing fall leaves. It is so much fun to do!!! I carefully melt beeswax over the leaf using a quilting iron on both sides – voila! Fall colors preserved! :)xoxo
