Waiting for the Mad Hatter…

Where could he be, you tell me?

We sit here impatiently waiting for the mad hattered he.

In our finest frocks, ready to hear the news…

Tea?

Helloooooey?

Growing garden 46

Those surprise lilies from years ago bloom like mad…

Growing garden 45

As I get out my finest, attempting to look as proper as the folks up above…

Growing garden 48

Hair-do in order.

Mister thought, umm, not so much.

What?!

🙂

Growing garden 49

What do boys know about hair-do's anyway, I ask you?

Harumph.

So…

Hydrangea come out to play.

Growing garden 27

As we search and wonder.

Did you get your invite, what about you and you and thee?

Me either.

Where could he be?

We haunt the vegetable garden, biding time…

Growing garden 20

The scent of jasmine, slowly becoming intertwined…

Growing garden 19

Pumpkin vines creep, and awaken with glee.

Growing garden 17

A baby, oh a baby!

A pumpkin babe eeeeee!

Growing garden 36

Tomatoes are greenies for a while I bet.

Growing garden 24

On evenings we roam and wonder, is it time yet?

Growing garden 21

Give us magic, give us fun!

Give us excitement, we feel bored and glum.

(well, not all the time, but a party would majorly hit the spot I'd say)

Fresh mesclun salad for din, anyone?

Growing garden 26

Radishes, oh how I love thee!

Growing garden 25

And wait, I almost tripped.

Oh my oh me!!!!

Growing garden 32

Shell safe babies all cozy, in a nest on the ground, guarded by their mommy.

Growing garden 35

Oh Mrs. Quail, stay safe and sound!!

Pleeeeease.

Growing garden 34

Hollyhocks pop in, in late May…

Growing garden 42

With imperial larkspur and parsley flowers guiding the way.

Oh and, let's not forget the yellow yarrow.

Growing garden 37

Blue larkspur, dear larkspur, is it true you have powers?

Growing garden 30

Or is it the hydrangea with tricks for the day?

This blue has turned pink.

Growing garden 39

While the other hydrangea taunts in lilacs, hooray!

Growing garden 40

For blue we need acid.

Coffee grounds not enough it seems to keep the blues alive.

But all these little waffling tones, are certainly a feast for fairy eyes.

Growing garden 29

And did someone turn on the neon sign, in the poppy park?

Growing garden 28

Such wondrous little treasures, jewels straight from mother nature's heart.

Growing garden 31

One guest is here for certain.

Early, and to stay.

Miss Rhiannon Kitty, made by my dearest pal Marjorie Liucci

Did make a journey my way.

To live in the cottage, all cozy and safe.

She's a beauty with tales and secrets to boot!

We love her so!!

Growing garden 47

Meow!

She loves the garden, and sends her regards to her dear Marmee!!

Growing garden 38

Will the hatter turn up soon?

Growing garden 41

This is what I ask every day at a quarter past noon.

Growing garden 43

Will he get here in time to see the magical lilies bloom?

Grown quite like real magic I say, from a bouquet gift from a boy 14 years ago.

My so long now, where did the time go?

Plunked in the dirt with no time to put them in the bin.

There must have been some bulb particles at the bottom of those stems.

For every year since then, in spring, the magic happens again and again.

Wowie Zowie!!

Growing garden 44

Here we wait…

You too it seems?

Just sitting, wondering, waiting.

Growing garden 18

Hey Mad Hatter!!

Do you have a day job?

Where are you?

We wanna know, we wanna know, we wanna know!!

When's the mad tea party??

Yooo hoooo, Madster???

You out there?

Where could he be, honestly?

Any ideas?

You tell me.

Love, V

Sparkly heart

ps:  Based on the frocks, what year would you say that first photo is from?

I have a thought on it, wondering what you think?

And I wonder where they are?

Europe?

Any ideas?

My aunt sent me some lovely large old photos, such a treat!

  1. Loved your flower assortment today…..you must have 10 green fingers and 10 green toes!!!
    Jo

  2. harmony says:

Love the cat painting…she is one of my favorite artists….:)

  3. Marilyn says:

Your garden is just amazing, but then you have the sunshine sooner than many of us. But it does give hope. That photo looks like 1900-1920 era to me. Now waiting to know when that Mad Hatter will come for tea. My thinking cap is on and I hope to be able to play.

  4. I totally agree on the timing Marilyn, I am with ya there 😉

  5. Alia says:

I am back from getting married in Hawaii, is it too soon for another party?
    Never!
Send the Hatter my way Miss V and we shall drink some tea with glee!
    Wheeeeeee!

  6. You are keeping us in suspense! Vanessa…or maybe I should say the Mad Hatter is keeping us in suspense. Do I need a special invite or do I gate crash the party like Alice did? She really did…you know. She arrived falling down the rabbit hole and gate crashed the Queen of Hearts croquet match! And gate crashed the Mad Hatter’s tea party when they said ‘No! Room! No! Room!’ ‘Move down! Move down!’ and Alice never did sip her tea, but they said she couldn’t have less, but she could have more! What a muddle her mind was in. No wonder she got lost, she didn’t have a clue where she was, with no map to guide her to the tea party. Even the Cheshire Cat didn’t have a clue which way to go…this way…or that way??? As it really didn’t matter as all ways were the Queen’s ways. So, I say ‘Hurry Up! Mad Hatter’ as we are waiting in blog land to find the way to the party, unless it is a backwards Mad Tea party and we show up at the end and work our way backwards to the beginning…now that sounds like a plan. Might as well be muddled from the end and go back up the rabbits tunnel at the beginning. Circular reasoning to be sure. With lots of big soap bubbles to float around in while we are small.
None of this needs to make any sense as that is what Wonderland is all about…it makes you wonder about everything!!!
All I know is I can’t wait for the party to begin!!!
    =^..^=
    ^..^
    ..
    GRIN THE CHESHIRE CAT DISAPPEARS!!!

  7. Linnea-Maria says:

I love your garden! It is so full of amazing flowers and edible veggies :).

  8. Mrs Jones says:

To get your hydrangeas to bloom blue – put some iron nails into a jar, cover with water and let them go rusty. Water the hydrangeas with the rusty water – voila, blue flowers!!

  9. Misha DawaiOser says:

Oh, the little Quail and her nest…so cute…so vulnerable. I want to protect her.

  10. Your garden is amazing! It’s always weird to me, checking in with your blog. You guys have about 2 months of autumn, then summer hits again. Here we have about 3 months of spring, the rest is winter – and nothing here is blossoming yet.
I can’t tell you where the Mad Hatter is, but the Cheshire cat is here with us, and he’s getting very excited 🙂

  11. lori says:

Come out come out wherever you are mad hatter! Lovely photos…and I am guessing 1920’s for the first photo. How wonderful you have tomatoes already,
ah frIed grbeen tomatoes, nothIng better! We are just now planting our warm weather veggies in my neck of the woods (Appalachian mountains), because of the monsoon rain. Looking forward to your party!!

  12. laura says:

Oh my what a garden! there is definitely magic in that soil. i’m on my way out to plant pumpkins today! i finally have the space i need to have a giant magic garden and am sooooo excited! i’m just mad to know when this party will be! hee hee
    love & blessings
    ~*~
ps…i think the photo is from the 1890’s?

  13. We had a very cooooold winter this year too. With oodles of
snow. I am at a high elevation, it still gets into the 100s – but not as
hot as say Phoenix or the heart of Tucson. We basically dont really have
a huge autumn, maybe just a month of autumn because it is warm, not hot, up ntil
Halloween. And then it goes straight into winter until about early
April. Where I live it does freeze, we had a record amount of freezes
thiswinter too, curious weather times. It does get cold in
winter though, people are always surprised at that.
Weather fascinates me for some reason???? 🙂

  14. Marjorie says:

EEEeeeeeeeek! Where do I begin!? And how lovely everything is in your garden….we have radishes planted, and carrots….all wee babies still (in our wee one’s own little garden bed, she planted them and chose them, as she is so enamored of Peter Rabbit these days…tee hee…in hopes of luring him to visit, perchance!??) My wee hydrangea is pink too….I did not know about the acidity for blues….not sure of the acidity of our soils…..rhododendrons do well here (they grow wild all over)…but my little hydrangea has a dusty white mildew problem, too…alas….we have had so so much rain, and we always have shade under all the trees….perhaps too much for them? I dream of hollyhocks!! I planted a little rootstock earlier in the the Spring….it has yet to come up, but would not bloom this year anyway, I think…..first year roots, second year shoots, third year blooms….is that right?? I think I read that somewhere…tee hee. (Too long for impatient little flower-loving me) tee hee.
Oh swoon…your gardens!! Swwwooooooon!! I say!
Oh, And I’m beyond thrilled that your pleased with your wee Miss Rhiannon cat! I’m pleased as punch and over the moon that she has gone to make her home with such a Dearie pie! (And amongst such loveliness that you have created in your beautiful corner of the lands)!! Thank You so much for mentioning her on your ever so beautiful blogling, sweet Miss Twist!
    Your so lovely! : )

  15. Marjorie says:

    P.S.
I’m guessing that the photo was taken around 1912 or 13? The teens, I think. Based on the frocks and hair….but I’m certainly no expert! tee hee! : )

  16. Marjorie says:

maybe later teens? tee hee….sorry, no more comments, I promise! tee hee ; )

  17. Barbara says:

I’m with Marjorie! These are Edwardian era clothes and hair, but with an elongated Art Deco silhouette/neckline creeping in – so, mid to late teens…
(Also no expert, just love costuming 🙂

  18. Kelly says:

I am AMAZED at those MAGICAL GORGEOUS lilies that were a once upon a time gift, SLEEPING beneath the soil, hiding for the perfect moment to join your Fanciful Gardens. Now they triumph in such quantity gracing the grounds with blazing perfection of a past memory of young love. Vanessa, I am glad you posted about these again! They are just FABULOUS!!! <3

  19. I totally agree, that is about what I bet with Mister Lovee 😉

  20. Can you believe about 14-15 years later, they still bloom like clock work
every single year? Literally, I had them in a vase, and I was living at
the city house – and they were getting all slimey and old – So…. I
plunked them in a pot that had soil in them, stems straight down. And they
sort of dried out there, and disintegrated. Then, the next year, my sis
was like, there are really pretty plants growing in that pot you plunked those
dry flowers in, and lo and behold it was the lilies. And ever since then,
every year, there they are. Quite like magic 😉

Your gardens are so very beautiful. I can actually smell and hear them from here. Such awesome photos, maybe taken around 1909. I have a few photo’s of family from that time. They look familiar in style.
Our wonderful warm weather is on vacation….It was 37 when I awoke this a.m. The sun is out now but still on the chilly side. Can’t wait for the warmth to come back again

  22. Oh, its about 99 here today!! OH MY!!!

Well hello there, Miss Vanessa! Sorry to be absent as of late. Such lovely garden imagery! And I do adore our new art from Marmeecraft. I am a fan of hers. 🙂 I am not sure where the Hatter is…but I am sure he will be popping up soon!

  24. Sue says:

    Your garden is so beautiful.
I miss the quail. I don’t see them in the city. They use to lay their families in my talvera pots.

  25. Erin says:

I think Edwardian. Victorian would have been more buttoned up at the neckline. Somewhere between Victorian and 1920.

  26. Deborah Fry says:

I would say the ’20s sorta flapper look.

  27. I agree. I think its funny how their hair is way more conservative
    than their attire, isnt it?

Tu jardin es maravilloso,un estallido primaveral 🙂
Me imagino la cantidad de hadas que lo cuidan no?
La foto vintage me encanta ,puede ser de finales de 1890-1900
    Besos amiga.

  32. Cameron says:

Your garden is wondrous and gorgeous to behold!
…but that Mommy quail and her beautiful eggs made me all warm and mushy inside 🙂

    *Peaceful Sigh*
What started out as a stressful morning just took a blissful turn. Your gardens are beautiful and magic seeps out of my screen with each new picture. Thank you for the tour through your fairy blossoms and baby pumpkin vine. Momma Quail, why, oh why do you always insist on laying eggs on the ground? Guard your babies well, Momma. What a darling little family.
Bright Blessings of Love and Light.

  34. The kitty painting is fabulous.
Hey! I bet you’d look awesome in a Gibson Girl hairstyle–
all big poofy blonde hair and lace everywhere.

  35. Irina says:

Gorgeousness!!!! Please give those babies of your a kiss from me… 😉
    xoxoxo

  36. Jenn says:
