Another week flew by as life whirls and twirls and spins into the future. Is life on fast forward, or is it just me? Luckily, there are some things reminding me that time is ticking along just as it should be.
As two sunflowers opened up and began the adventures of nature, beckoning bees in to feast.
While day after day, another sunflower decidedly took its time in showing its face to strangers…
Mister Lovee went out of town, on a trip I was going to join in, but with puppy and a busy schedule I opted to stay behind…
We missed our Mister, and couldn't wait for him to come back home, so he could silence us out with his headphones ;) and run around the yard playing (this man listens to NPR 24/7, even while he sleeps). But that's okay, because his pups have no clue, and are happy just to be by his side, no matter what…
In the meantime, we had a lovely week. Packaging orders and running around happily, but best of all, Mammie came to visit. It was so delightful and wonderful having her here. So much so in fact, that not one photo was taken while she was here, I totally forgot. Imagine that? I know, bizarre 😉
And when she left, my pre-school self wanted to chase after her car screaming, "Mommmmmie, pleeeeease don't leave me heeeeeeere!!!" I love that lady. She is super duper wonderful, like a fairy godmother and a hip chick all wrapped into one Mombie package, with extra ribbons… Sigh. How I wish that when I was a kid I had appreciated those heart and star sandwiches she used to pack in my lunch more.
Sometimes, you just don't realize how wonderful your Mom is until you're all growed up…
Anyhow, while Mammie was not here, this is what went down –
It snowed –
No, not real snow. Arizona snow. Shrub fluff, of sorts 😉
Oops, my outdoor sofa thingie lost a cushion.
I lined up stepping stones and then moved them again so I could dig up the ground a few inches and started putting the stones down. I also took out 12 giant aloe that you can kind of see on the right. This is what you see when you stand at my office door and look out. The little metal building on the right is the gallery. So I think a little path between the office and the gallery would be cute with all the stones I hauled here from the city house, don't you think?
Of course, that is not the order I am putting them down in. They will look a bit better when completed.
While that was going on, there were daily checks to see if the giant sunflower had shown its face…
And, I hung out with my little piggies…
Who both love water and -
MUD. Maybe a bit too much?
When I was a little girl, my Mom used to do my hair do's real tight and put me in clothes that I wasn't supposed to get dirty. She used to scold me about not getting food on my white turtleneck and such, but I did anyway (and I always ripped my jeans and tights at the knee). So once, after getting spaghetti on a white blouse (2nd grade) she made me wear the same clothes the next day to school, after threatening this for ages. I was mortified. The kids made fun of me. I am not sure that changed things, I can't remember – Anyhow…
In retaliation (tee hee), I told her that when I grew up, if I had kids I was going to let them be dirty and grubby and that they were going to run around barefoot, and I would let them.
Well, my babies, being of the furry variety fulfilled my words perfectly, didn't they? I know, I should be so proud 😉
Mwuah mwuah mwuah…
"Give me a wet sloppy kiss Baby, pleeeeeeeeazzzz."
Matty is quite the character. He will love you over the moon some days, and others, doesn't want you to even consider petting him.
Oh and, hold my hand. He is out growing my lap. Sniffle sniffle…
So, I am soaking the puppy on my lap love up…
I didn't really grow up with pets, I am mostly allergic to everything (I had 4 allergy shots twice a week my whole life until I was 19). But not my pups. I never thought I would be a furry creature Mammie, but I can't imagine a day without these characters. Funny how that happens.
So, I was happy to have them with me while Mister was gone. Baby is an amazing guard dog, and Mister agreed to my desire for a second dog so she could groom him to be like her, and he actually is doing pretty good. He even found his bark.
Okay okay, I promise not to bore you with pup talk anymore, for today that is.
Now, what were we saying about cactus?
I just wanted a reason to put this silly shot up ;) Don't try this at home or in the desert if you ever find yourself in one.
To continue last week's tale –
On Thursday I decided to go on a major grocery shopping excursion and make a beautiful meal for Mister's return the next evening. Then I decided I would attempt to look less like a garden patch girl as well, even if only for a day.
I ironed and re-found a beloved jewel piece. Don't worry, I don't have a pointy thumb, I was moving my hand to straighten up my necklace when I took this, eeeks!
I was so excited to be playing dress-up and making an elaborate dinner (I was almost tempted to make a turkey, but decided to wait for Thanksgiving).
I decided I would start making dinner on Friday evening when Mister Lovee called to say he he was boarding the airplane. Just then, guess what happened?
The phone rang, only it wasn't to say he was on his way…
Yes, it was like being stood up for a date ;) His plane was delayed and he wouldn't be home until midnight, annnnd he had eaten. "Bbbbbut, ummmm, okay, hope you get here safe and sound…"
Not to veer but this is funny – whenever I am perplexed annoyed, or just busy, I raise one eyebrow. Now, the funny part is, for many years, like when I was in junior high, I could feel my forehead doing something strange when I was perplexed, annoyed etc – but I didn't know what it was. One day, I did it and ran to the mirror, to see what exactly I was doing with my face. That is how I found out about the scary raising eyebrow thing I do.
So, that was my brow as I hung up the phone. Phooey…
I know, it is a bit witchy like, but I promise I am not a meanie ;)
With that I decided on plan B (for me). So, I put on sweats and went to the store to buy the magical ingredients –
That made the house smell like absolute heaven! A moist unreal Pumpkin Cake Recipe with butter cream-cheese honey frosting, that a lovely gal shared with me last week.
Pumpkin and cinnamon and ground cloves, oh my!
OH YAH!!!! It is beyond delicious and the scent, oh the scent I longed for!!
Hello Baking Season…
Perfect Timing for a fall/winter weather pattern that came to visit. A 6 a.m. take the puppy outside trip turned into a dance with sheer dreamscape magic.
Can you spot the sliver of the moon?
Unreal. Moist air. Dances with clouds…
Oh moon…
Getting up to go outside in the cold when you have only slept a few hours never looked or felt so wonderful…
Well worth it, I say.
And so, I made the dinner I planned for last night today, for a late lunch. Salmon, which I season, then sear for 3 minutes face down in an oven safe pan with 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil that has been heated. Then flip it over on to the bottom side of the fish - bottom being the side that once had or still has the skin attached. Drain the olive oil that you seared the fish in, into a bowl, and re-pour it over the tops of the fish pieces that are seared, and pop the whole pan (uncovered) in a preheated at 400'F oven, for 8 minutes or until flaky. Mine takes 8 minutes exactly, and then I pull the pan out and cover the fish with the pan lid while I finish up loose ends… I am telling you -
Yumm! (if you like salmon and don't already cook it that way, give it a whirl, won't you?)
I served it with homemade creamed spinach with almond slivers, avec delicious mashed potatoes, and well – indulge I say…
You can drizzle lemon on your fish, but what I do is that I bring balsamic vinegar to a boil and then I simmer it for about 5 minutes. Much of the acidity cooks out and you are left with a perfect sweet and sour syrup to drizzle over your fish and around your plate… Voila.
Oh and, someone finally peeked out -
To bring you a huge smile, just as bright and as cheerful as can be.
So there you have it. That is where I went off to for a couple of days. And now, I have all my paint lined up and I am going to create all night, as Mister is out playing a folksy gig. Perfect timing for me to visit you and babble your eyeballs off.
I will be back very soon. Sooner than soon in fact.
🖤,V
ps: I have seen so many movies since I last shared a list – but as of late I have seen a few that I really loved. They are mostly documentary, and I watch them (when available) instantly on Netflix while I work…
10 Questions for the Dalai Lama
Tony Bennett – The Music Never Ends (I enjoyed it much more than I expected to)
Glass: Portrait of Philip in Twelve parts
The Men who Killed Kennedy (there are many discs to this one, all at Netflix)
In a Dream (the artwork/mosaic-work this man did/does was mind-blowing. There is a bit of adult subject matter)
Chuck Close: A Portrait in Progress
Julia Child – America's Favorite Chef
And, I watch the Two Fat Ladies entire series over and over. Even though the show is no more and Jennifer has passed away, I love them…

maybe a long tale but fab:)
Your post was filled with happy Fall images!
Dancing clouds,Sunflower love..yummy dinner ahhhhh pumpkin dessert hmmmmm and those darling dogs!!and stepping stones… a gardeners delight:)
Hugs,
kayellen
What a fun few days V! So glad those pups keep you safe and sounds 😉 Always a bummer…those delayed planes, but so glad you go to have that deeeeee-licious looking meal the next day! I’ll bet Mister loooved it. Lovely sunflower! My neighbor had a huge patch of sunflowers in her front garden…almost got as tall as the light pole, just plain craziness I tell ya! And so beautiful. I totally know that feeling you get when the Mum leaves. When my visits for the weekend, I am always so sad to see her go. I always try and con her into staying a day more…but it rarely works. Jobs stink, tee hee. See ya sooooon…
Jamie 🙂
you must have read my mind… when i was in the shops afew days ago, my 3 year old spotted the salmon and wanted me to buy it. i didnt as i am not sure how to cook it..now i know. thanks v you are smashing!

What lovely outside pictures! It has been positively chilly up here all of a sudden, and I am starting to really enjoy it, which is good as we are off to camp next week. I am worried I may freeze, but the snuggling will be so much better don’t you think? OH…and I am working on an easel for the sidewalk of my mother’s new shop “Gypsy Street Antiques” and I have come across the most wonderful vintage gypsy images that just remind me of you…
I always love to read your posts before I go to bed. Makes me happy and puts me in a good dream mode.
The sunflowers are beautiful. I almost feel like I can touch them. Salmon is yummy, I try to eat it as much as I can.
I love seeing pictures of you, Lady V. Please post more..i enjoy seeing your sparkly and magical self.
Love that stripey scarf you were sporting.
As per walkways…my uncle sets up a paver style mold and pours cement when he has visitors and they each get to carve whatever pattern/design they want into the cement and he uses these to make walkways. Quite the fun idea I thought.
That salmon looks SO good as does the pumpkin cake!
Ooh and one of those orders mailed is coming to my house! Yayyyyy 😀
Where do I even begin? What an amazingly fantabulous post.
Your posts always get me so excited and crazy and wild and all sorts of other wonderful things..so inspiring!
Your pups are the sweetest little cutie pies ever! They just melt ya.

P.S. you should have a real party with the gals here maybe, some live near you to invite. Decorate, dance and create. If I had the money for airfare I would come to visit. Imaginge setiing up tents for people to sleep in haha! make way for the bathroom line up haha! teehee!

Love you Miss Vanessa Valencia. Even your NAME is pretty!
I didn’t know how to respond to this post, it being so totally fabulous and all.
But, then, I read the comment right above from Alix, and I realized that everything I wanted to say had been written down very succinctly.
So – re-read Alix’ post above, and sign it from me!
Wonderful post! You look so pretty all dressed up! Love watching the sunflower bloom…amazing! Have fun!
what great pics! the flowers, the food! ah! and you are just too cute!
xo natalea
Yes, I agree with Tristan – Alix’s post hits the nail right on the head!! You make me dizzy with all that you do, and so PERFECTLY!! I’m worn out just reading your post, haha – and then I think, ‘well, nothing for me to do now – you’ve done it all, no need for me to bother!’ Love, love your posts – it’s almost as if you live in a different world, and you have so much energy! And the sunflower photos are gorgeous! And I must have a go at the salmon recipe! x
Hi Vanessa! There were just so many awesome things in this post…don’t even know where to start. First, you are completely right – you do definitely appreciate your mom more when you are older. My mom and I have been “friends” always – but it was when I grew up that I valued everything that she had given and taught me all the more. 🙂 There’s nothing in the world like getting a nice big hug from mom…except perhaps…
A big ole sloppy kiss from a happy pup! I could NEVER tire of hearing about your sweet doggies. I love animals so very, very much. Your little guy is too adorable. My youngest sleeps above my head each night, even sometimes placing his furry noggin on the pillow beside me. Then, each morning, I am greeted with many kisses all over my face. My oldest girl is more demure, but my baby Neo is just a barking, tail wagging, high velocity bundle of love and affection!!! And I love it. 🙂
It is amazing to see photos of sunflowers at this time of year (with me being on the East Coast) – everything here is in the quiet slumber stage til next season. Seeing the glorious flowers and fuzzy “snow” is a constant reminder of the spring that will eventually return here.
The recipe for the pumpkin cake looks DIVINE. I will definitely make it – thanks for posting that recipe. And I kind of wished that I could grab that salmon right off the computer screen! (I know, rather weird!!!). Salmon is one of our favorites, too. I like it simply prepared as well. Although my husband is the “king” of sauces and marinades. At least that is what I’ve crowned him. LOL 😉
Well, this is rather a long-winded reply. Anyhow, thanks bunches for letting me start my Sunday with a great cup of coffee and another great peek into your lovely world.
I hope you have a lovely day! Theresa 🙂
It’s always sad to see a loved one leave after a visit, especially your mammie. Glad you have the protection from those scary looking pups. 😀
Hello Vanessa… I sooo love your blog! I have had to eliminate some of the blogs I was checking as I just ran out of time, so I kept my “favorites” and yours is at the top of the list! You are beautiful! Raised eyebrow and all! And your posts are always sooo enchanting… I am very lucky to have my “Mister” too, and we share many of the same things you and your Mister do… your puppies are precious and I just want to hug them and let them give me big puppy slobbery kisses! Love to you… xoxo Julie Marie
Mmmm that salmon dinner looks yummy. I have never cooked my salmon that way, next time I will give it a go.
Now off to unpack some more.
Have a lovely Sunday!
Vanessa you are gorgeous inside and out.
I am making salmon this week, guess how I am going to do it?
xoxoxo
Helloooooo Miss Pretty Pants!
I’ve been missing you—-five million errands and events here lately.
Your photos are so wonderful. I particularly like the shy (or secretive?) sunflower with its petals all scrunched up.
You remind me of a young, pretty Stevie Nicks. But without the reek of patchouli. You can almost smell her patchouli through the photos, you know? So, a 2009, super clean pretty Stevie Nicks.
It’s so fun to get all gussied up occasionally, isn’t it? I spend most of my days in ugly painty/gardeny clothes. So, every now and then, to preserve my sanity and the last vestiges of my femininity, I playe dress up.
I Haaaaaate delayed planes! The only thing worse would have been in you’d already BEEN at the airport. Airports are kind of fun, though. They seem like this magical in-between place, like purgatory or something. I could sit in an airport and watch people forever.
I ALSO listen to NPR 24/7. Drives Adam bonkers. He can’t decide whose voice he hates more….Ira Glass or Garrison Keillor. Isn’t that EVIL? Have I married the DEVIL????
I wish my Mama lived closer, too. She is so much fun. I hope my daughter is as fond of me when she grows up as I am of my mother. Mamas know you like NO ONE else.
I just watched The Brothers Bloom, too. I loved it when Rachel Weiz Weiss? ran around playing harp, juggling chainsaws, and making pinhole cameras from watermelons. Remind you of our lives a tiny bit????? I’ll have to get the Philip Glass dvd–I hope it’s on Netflix.
All right—I must go do THINGS. Have a lovely Sunday afternoon, Miss V!!!!!!
-Laura
Well I don’t eat animals but cake is fine by me! 😀
Lovely photos as always.
I know exactly what you mean about appreciating one’s mother. I really came to appreciate my mom when I went off to college and had to cook, shop, and do my own laundry on top of working and studying.
You have a load of work cut out for you placing those stepping stones. I did four in my yard and it took me quite a while to get them level. I can’t wait to see your work when it’s done.
I am going to try the Balsamic vinegar on my salmon. We love salmon and eat it twice a week.
XO
~elaine~
FABULOUS photos…
Two fat ladies rock. Loved that show. I watched it for ages.
When do or rather DO you sleep? Hmm? You accomplish so much. From perfect make-up and hair application to cooking salmon, laying down path stones, hanging with dogs, watching ten thousand movies.
I’m tired just thinking of it.
Annnd Mombie’s are the best. I have preschool moments daily. Oh yeah!
xoxo
Love you Vanessa!!!
(My new niece is Vanessa! Vanessa Elizabeth. She is cute. Of course.) lol…
😀
Yes! I’m so glad you made the cake and enjoyed it, isn’t it fabulous! My mouth is filling up with drool just thinking about it, I’m planning on making one next week! Woo hoo! lol
I live to stream Netflix, lol. I watched a doc on The Shakers the other day, it was very interesting. That salmon looks delicious!
Have a great week!
You should have your own show. Your life is absolutely magical. Thank you for sharing it with me… us.
Gosh your dogs are so cute…and you too. ‘;)
There must have been a baking fairy in the air today spreading her magic because I made Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Whoopie Pies with a Marshmallow Fluff center. Oh, like a glutton I ate two and now I’m sugar buzzing. Wee!
http://pics.livejournal.com/dawaioser/pic/000r3g54
I’m so glad my Momster is only blocks away! We’re so lucky to be close to amazing ladies like our Mom’s!
Dang! That salmon looks so good! I am going to have to try that one…
I truly admire the Dalai Lama. He is a remarkable man. I have a book about him…I know he has been to Arizona before at some ‘destination.’ If I ever get the chance I would love to meet him. Brad Pitt did a wonderful performance in the Tibet movie about ‘his holiness’…I guess that is what people call him. The Dalai Lama has such a peacefulness about him that not many people attain to. That is what draws me to him. Mother Teresa was that way too. Inspirational people…in spite of their difficulties. And our own mothers always being there for us.
Hugs,
I love someone who will go outside in his socks! I thought I was the only one who did that!
Babble my eyeballs off! Ha! That’s funny!
I definately will try the orange peels and the salmon. Both look scrumptious!
I could actually smell the pumpkin cake…really!!! And the puppy love surrounded me. Alas! No more puppy breath. How sad! I moved to New Mexico, leaving my mommie in Ohio! How I miss her. We chat constantly!
Hugging you
SueAnn

eeep! Your fluffly pups are SO cute!! And you, as ever, as lovely beyond words! 🙂 And now I must go search out a new Fat Ladies recipe to try (I love that show!!)!!
Hey, you! I just made pumpkin stuff, and it was good. I know just what you mean about the zipping time! Your stepping stones are going to be fabulous. And I know you probably already have them perfect, but I’m late again. Time! Time!
Your blog stuffs are wonderful!!The night moon scenary is fabulous!!Thanks for sharing!
The sunflowers are beautiful. I almost feel like I can touch them. Salmon is yummy, I try to eat it as much as I can. Keep blogging!!!!
