Of Thread and Moth Wings

I am in this secret space of swirling, spinning, whispering, singing – makings.

Time ceases to exist in that studio space.

There is day and night and rain and clouds.

Morning and sunset.

But it is all one long happening.

Lost in the making of things.

Making days 2

Sewing little pieces by hand, finishing up the frocks.

Chatting with my wee lass, as she sits on one of the workbenches in the studio.

I cup her face in my hands.

Talking to her.

Telling her about her whole new outfit that has been tea stained and air dried.

Making days 3

With tiniest lace details.

And lots of love.

Making days 4

I take breaks from sewing and get utterly lost in jewel makings.

I tell myself it's time to wrap it up and take pics, but I get engulfed in the addiction of making.

It's like I can't stop.

I like shiny things and sparkly things and fairy clanking sounds of body adornments layered in nonsensical gobs.

Making days 1

Only the cracking sky makes me look up and take a walk.

The air is laced with sand.

I close my eyes and cocoon myself with my arms as a dust devil whips around me.

Hair and gown billowing in the wind.

The sky turns a dusty sepia.

I watch clouds get airbrushed by nature.

I see faces.

Profiles.

Do you?

Faces peeking out of the sky through the clouds, hovering above faintest rainbow.

Making days 9

The winds break my garden umbrellas, and throw someone's baby swimming pool way down the road, right outside of my gate.

The thunder and lighting bash around, and the lights flicker.

It pours rain two streets over.

But would you believe, never on me.

The next night, I chase lightning around.

I let the cool breeze whip me around, and I am delighted.

Making days 7

And then again, no rain on my patch of earth, but rain 100 steps away from me.

Weird silly ridiculous rain times.

I look at the blue sky through storm clouds.

And then I realize…

Making days 8

Even in stormiest weather, the blue sky is always there.

No matter how dark or torrential things get, right above it all, is the blue sky.

Just like life.

If we always know the blue sky is there, and rotten things are just storms that will pass –

Then maybe hurdles can be easier?

I don't know.

Just my own way of coping in life's weirdness I suppose.

I like to think the blue sky is always there, somewhere.

Night falls and I share my chair and ottoman with a giant lizard.

He leaves quickly though.

I sit on the front porch watching clouds and lightning with Matty and Miles.

As Mister Lovee runs around doing who knows what.

I so enjoy the swaying fairy lights over the butterfly bush.

Making days 6

Then I notice lots of things flying around the butterfly bush.

About 8 or so.

I get up close and notice it's a whole hummingbird moth familia.

They are so big!

So, I paparazzi them.

Hummingbird moth 1

Of course, I have to be careful…

Because those fluttering wings want me to start a whole other painting project.

When I am still in the midst of another.

Hummingbird moth 2

And truth be told.

I have waaay too many projects going at once right now.

So, I best figure out how to wrap one up.

Thing is…

I am so obsessed and in love with the making of things right now, that I can't stop.

Making days 5

And when I am not making, I am getting into all manner of shenanigans in the garden.

Or just generally harassing people around me 🙂

For example, I have taken that saying about glitter to heart…

"Life is short, use more glitter."

So, in order to implement this, I chase people around, my sister and Mister Lovee in particular, with spray glitter.

They think they hate it, but honestly, when you are headed to a meeting and dinner later, and your sister spray glitters you, shouldn't you thank her?

Even if she chases you around, spray glitters your car and your whole back side as you try to get away?

I mean honestly, how ungrateful could a person be?

(hee hee)

To go around town sparkling as such is a good thing.

Imagine how special one should feel?

Sparkling around town?

Don't you think?

So, if you come near me, I'll spray glitter you.

You woulnd't mind, would you?

My sister keeps asking me if I am crazy.

But I ask, who wouldn't want to wear glitter?

Now that, that is what I call crazy.

🙂

Loove, V

Sparkly heart

Oh the lightning storms! The lightning storms…how I miss their glorious colors flashing from one edge of a cloud to another!! Hubby and I were gifted with a small one as we descended into the belly of the beast. You know, the I-8 as you’re leaving the mountains outside of San Diego headed towards Ocotillo…I call that road, “The belly of the Beast!” That long descent from the mountains above to the desert floor below. Tho it was small it lit up the entire sky and illuminated my heart ;-))).
Oh! Me thinks there’s a hippo in one of your clouds…yippee for hippos!!
And, “Oh” again…dont their little wings just make your heart leap…the humming bird moths of course. If you could talk with them what do you suppose they would say???
    Happiest of happy Mondays!!
    Coricakes

  2. Queenie says:

Queenie fully advocates glittering around town :o)
    Have a great day.
    Always, Queenie

  3. Janel says:

I have two hummingbird moths that come every dusk to eat from the Zinnias ( seeds you gifted me a few years ago now). They are just amazing to look at and watch…..
As for glitter…. I LOVE glitter. I wish glitter was more acceptable all around. I used to wear spray glitter in the 80s….in my hair, on my panty hose going to church…..haha… Jesus needs glitter too!

  4. Hahahaha!! Glitter girls!! 😉 You
    rock!

  5. deb says:

HOw i miss lightning storms Vanessa! Can you believe where i live in CA almost NEVER has them! How i relished them in TX. 🙂 Oh i don’t mean tornados and floods those dangerous things but just the wind the rain the thunder the lightning the power! of mother nature… Everything is so calm here…… So unlike my turbulent self…. AND omGosh glitter! I love glitter. I’am pushing 50 years old and i’am not beyond adorning myself with glitter….. one purpose! I may get a lot of people rolling their eyes at me or shaking their heads but BUT if i made one person smile when they see my glitter then my job is done! Teehee!! LOL! Big Hugs Vanessa! deb

  6. I love that moth lol, my dad found one once and freaked out because he couldn’t figure which it was, a humming bird or a bug. They’re so cool.

  7. Miss Linda says:

I would love to be sprinkled with glitter..it would make me smile. Your photos are so amazing and so are you. I can’t wait to see what you are up to..latest projects.
Thank you so much for your inspirations.

  8. If I ever make it to the Southwest, I’d be most happy if you sprayed me with glitter before a fun night on the town. My wife might think I was nuts, but she generally thinks that anyway.

  9. Victoria says:

The rain is the same here…when it rains. The clouds are behaving very oddly these days. Those hummingbird moths are soooo beautiful! I wish we had them here in the So Cal mountains. And, if I ever head east to Arizona, I’d be honored if you sprayed me with glitter! You can never have to many sparkles…
    Blessings,
    Victoria

  10. I love glitter but my friends have this funny sign that reads: “Glitter is the herpes of the crafting world.” LOL – so wrong…just wrong. That said, cover me, roll me, spray me, and dip me in glitter everyday. You can’t go wrong with the sparkly stuff! ‘;)

  11. I love her shoes and socks and dainty little details in the clothes! Those moths are amazing! You must have a better camera than mine, it is terrible at taking close ups, and if it’s moving- fudgeddaboudit! Still, it’s just a digital camera for documenting life events 🙂 It’s what it needs to be

  12. Jenn A. says:

The fabric and lace and ribbon are so very pretty – I love looking at every little detail! (I think I have scraps around here like the pink striped fabric with roses, only mine is the blue striped version – got it a loooong time ago to cover some shoe boxes.)
And as to your Glitter-tastic shenanigans, well, sometimes people just don’t understand when they’re being helped, do they? : )
Hope you are having a great day, and having fun sparkling up everything (and everyone) in your path!
    ~Jennifer

  13. LOL @ the glitter ..you are so funny! I have glittered a few myself 🙂 And omg, the photographs are excellent! Thank you so much sweetie for sharing your beautiful work and attitude.
    xoxo,

  14. Marilyn says:

I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a hummingbird moth until this summer.
One night I couldn’t sleep and got up for awhile. Looking out my front door one sat ever so still on my front door screen. I tapped, but it stayed there for quite awhile. I guess it was resting from a long trip. It was amazing! \
How lovely to have the creativity in your soul to the extent that you lose yourself in the moments.

  15. Indigo says:

Oh how lovely! I have never heard of a hummingbird moth! Such a beautiful delicate little creature! Thank you for showing those wonderful photos! And you can spray me with glitter anytime! In fact whenever I go to Arizona I will expect the spraying to commence!
    Hugs! 😉

  16. I can see your mind has been taking off in many different directions. My mind gets so crazy at times I don’t even know where I was two seconds before going into another room in my house!
I wish we could just wave a magic wand and make time stand still, so we can get all of our projects completed, and loose no time at all! Now THAT would be pure, magic! Too many projects and so little time! I think I’ll put that saying on my next mixed media canvas!
The hummingbird moth (Sphinx Moth)is such a beautiful creature. It’s wonderful you get so many of them flitting around your beautieous acreage. And it’s so strange how the rain missed falling on your parcel of fairy land.
Very refreshing post, with the clouds, lightening, and swoon!…the purple morning glory and yellow Dahlia! So enchantingly lovely!

  17. Jenn says:

That weather! I am just loving the pink and white stockings on your new art doll. I’m on the edge of my seat for each and every new creation!
