A Hauntingly Magical Celebration {Back to the Witch’s Cottage}

Hidden on my parcel of earth is one of a few little rooms, a cottage of sorts.

This is a space I fill with herbs and garden findings, candles and treasures.

When autumn begins to nip at my toes, I know it’s time to let a little extra magic out.

This is the space where that happens.

Since autumn looms in the nearish future, and I have enchanted Halloween parties on my mind –

I thought a trip back in time to this party would be just what the good witch ordered for today.

Come with me, won’t you my pretty?

Halloween 2009 50

Magic is abrewin’, and we’re just waiting for you to join in…

(all spell and potion labels you see in this post can be found in my online shop here)

Halloween 2009 38b

Tales and gypsy wagons, ghosts from old photographs, cottages in the woods and witches casting spells are all part of what make up our magically haunted festivities!

Halloween A Party FRONT

Characters from the past greet us, and lead us down dark winding paths, urging the telling of secrets.

Halloween 2009 47

You see, the night I shared the gypsy theater wagon with its potions and spells (right here) I invented a wee tale, in order to avoid revealing a vast and spellbinding secret…

Halloween 2009 48

I was told by the old woman at the gypsy wagon, who was selling spells and incantations, that I would find the answer to my wildest dreams-

Potions spells and herbs 15

If I followed a dark path into the woods, to an old cottage.

She showed me a drawing of this place.

Halloween 2009 23a

It was very dark, and I walked alone down a path in chilly darkness, until I could see a glowing light in the distance.

I was certain that I was unexpected, and had a feeling I should run, but I seemed entranced by the light…

Halloween 2009 22

I can not describe what I saw.

And, the only way for you to believe me, is for me to take you down the path with me.

Will you come with me to prove that I wasn’t dreaming?

Down the dark path we go.

You can almost feel the spells and magic fluttering in the wind, while gentle cold whispers of ghost’s secrets dance around your ears.

We are here.

Go ahead, take a peek through the window…

Halloween 2009 21

Oh goodness me, the witches are busy this evening.

I see a girl from 1893, trapped in the crystal ball.

Can you see the witches?

I can.

I am told they are invisible to those who don’t believe.  Let’s be brave and sneak in as soon as the witches leave to tend to their giant cauldron in the forest clearing.

I think they are gone now.

Shhh, quietly, come with me…

Halloween 2009 9

The candles flicker as spirits dance, while in the distance the witches chant…

Halloween 2009 8

Gather around, shall we try our own spell?

Halloween 2009 10

Please don’t forget, not a soul we should tell…

Halloween 2009 17

You look at me wide eyed as can be, and start to notice, I don’t quite look entirely like myself.  My eyes grow dark as night, as my hair changes shades.  I look at you out of the corner of my eye and raise my left eyebrow so high, it sends chills down your spine.

I snap my fingers, and orbs of magic fill the air.

Can you feel me standing, right behind your chair?

Halloween 2009 1

Yes, you guessed right, this cottage is mine ~ and I will cast a spell for you for a mere Transylvanian dime…

Halloween 2009 2a

Wait, are you sure I am me?

Or am I a 300 year old witch, pretending to be V?

Halloween 2009 3

You’ll never know my pretty.

But I will tell you this, the last man who crossed me, was turned into…

Halloween 2009 18

A dancing puppet 😉

Halloween 2009 46

Alas, that is another tale for another night.

(my sister brought me the puppet man from London by Lindsey Carr)

On this night, we shall twirl and play, because truth be told, you can’t fool me, I can see those shoes you’re wearing are extra pointy!

Halloween 2009 12

Come on, don’t be shy, we know you are wearing your exquisite striped stockings 😉

So, light a skull and make wish, then set it free into the night sky.

For tonight is the night that wishes really do come true…

Halloween 2009 49

Who shall play us a tune as we mingle?

Come now, let’s dance around the room…

Halloween 2009 11

And twirl in our spooky layered frocks!

Halloween 2009 54

Let’s welcome the ghosts of all those faces in photographs on the wall…

Halloween 2009 7

But, be warned…

Halloween 2009 5

It’s nights like these, where anything can happen…

Halloween 2009 4

Halloween 2009 45

Do share your spell, for that other-worldly brew.

The one that makes us 15 years younger with each sip, won’t you?

Halloween 2009 6

Come with me, and I shall teach you how to turn into a bird.

Halloween 2009 44

You can’t imagine how handy that can be for over-hearing conversations and such.

Let’s consult the great book…

Halloween 2009 13

Oh, what do we have here?

Halloween 2009 53

A lock of hair from the man someone loves.

Beware of love spells, I say…

Halloween 2009 16

Oh me, oh my!

What is that, that I hear?

Is it the real witches, getting near?

(They won’t like to know that we have been snooping around their spells)

Halloween 2009 15

Or have the faces in the photographs come to life?

Halloween 2009 14

I think we must hurry up, and try to hide.  I do think that when the witches are not around, the photograph faces serve as the witches eyes…

Halloween 2009 19

We have got to get out of here, can you hear them cackle??

Quick, take a pinch of this, and a pinch of that, and put it in your satchel.

We stayed too long engulfed in dance and play!

Halloween 2009 20

Just touching these magic ingredients is making me feel strange.

I feel quite sleeeeeeepy, don’t you?

We sneak out just in time, but I can only get as far as a tree, and find myself in the deepest sleep…

The next morning, I awake and find myself in a mossy little cove with a beautiful cherry blossom tree hovering above.

Why, I knew it was just a dream.

There is no such place, as where we dreamed we had been.

Witches and ghosts, hogwash, silly tales…

Halloween 2009 39

Come with me.

I will take you back to the cottage.

Go ahead.

Look through the window and tell me what you see…

Halloween 2009 35

Oh my goodness, it was not a dream at all!

Halloween 2009 24

The spells are alive, the cottage is real!

In fact…

Halloween 2009 26

Spells and magic await your fancy ~

Halloween 2009 28

Halloween 2009 43

Although, there is one thing the old gypsy woman said, through a bit of a scary giggle…

Halloween 2009 29

I must try to remember her words…

Halloween 2009 25

I think she said that, once you enter this hauntingly magical world…

Halloween 2009 27

You might never be able to leave…

(image below can be found as a card in my shop here)

Halloween 2009 31

Halloween 2009 41

Halloween 2009 40

Even if you want to…

Halloween 2009 42

So, of spells and incantations~

Halloween 2009 33

You must beware…

Halloween 2009 34

Or you might find yourself…

Halloween 2009 30

Entranced, beyond compare.

Halloween 2009 32

But for now, we cast a spell to be incandescently merry…

Halloween 2009 36

As we take flight, to other hauntingly magical destinations.

Halloween 2009 37

How I wish you were really here to frolic and play under the starry bizarre Arizona sky.

Where anything is possible, in that curious place where desert meets forest.

Halloween 2009 51

Pointy hats and pointy shoes, blackened feathers and witches brew, Bwahahahahaaaaa!

It’s time to for Midnight Margaritas!!!

You can visit my on-line shop for many spooky goodies and images seen in this post 😉

🖤, V

ps:  Hope you enjoyed that trip back through the witch wood in time!

There are so many moments we have shared here, that I forget about.

Until I am asked for photos or reminded by someone.

Then I go back and think, oh I forgot about that!

So, revisiting can be such a fun thing.

Hope you enjoy it too.

It’s also inspiring me for all of our autumn fun to come!!

  1. Kelly says:

Oh I love this post!! I am already looking forward to Fall and Halloween parties an I will be ordering some of your potion labels!!

  2. What a wonderfully creepy post, Vanessa! : ) I love all these pictures and getting lost in your story. You come across some wonderful pictures that you have in this special place and that just work out perfectly for Halloween fun!

  3. Ooooo! I am glad I am reading this post during the day time as the spooks are playing with my computer right now (seriously!) My computer is glitching all over the place not letting me finish this post! The comment section keeps evading me and glitching up and down and up and down. I am ALONE IN MY HOUSE!!! I do think I am a magnet for the paranormal! You know, when ones drives down a street at night and the street lights flicker or go out completely as you drive under them and then they turn back on? Kind of like Harry Potter. The energy of the paranormal must be at work!
You have such wondrous spooky illustrations in books…quite creepy, actually! And I adore your wall theatre with the red curtains. Just fabulous! And your black laced hand looks like it is ‘detached’ in one of the photos. Eeeek!!!
    Wondrously creepy post!!!

  4. Gina says:

Ahhhhh just what I needed ….. My fist pumpkin patch has a tiny little pumpkin growing
And vines growing wild …… Your photographs and tales always brighten my day.
Thank you for the inspiration ….now I am going to sip on some pumpkin spice coffee 🙂
    Xoxo Gina

  5. OOH such fun!! I’m getting so excited for fall and Halloween! Thanks for the reminiscing.
    Tracy M.

  6. Karen says:

That was the one that inspired me so! That and the short video that was done looking into the apothecary shop. Thanks for sharing it with us once again, Vanessa. I so look forward to this years Halloween soirée!! I can hardly wait.

  7. Jenn says:

This party… there are truly no words for how amazingly stunning and detailed it is. Just beautiful, and so real, and I’m so sucked in! And anytime you want me to come frolic and dance under your beautiful Arizona sky just let me know, I’ll be there1 😉 I had the weirdest dream about you and your clay elfins last night! Everyone was brought to real moving life. Every painting, every sculpture. It was truly magical. Perhaps it wasn’t a dream at all. It was really happening on some plane, somewhere, some dimension of existence!

  8. Miss Linda says:

Oh how hauntingly wondrous…. I’m looking forward to this time of year, although I’m not looking forward to colder weather.

  9. I love it, so much to look at. I just want to go play in it. 🙂

  10. Fabulousness, Vanessa, fabulousness! (Is that a word??…It is now!) ~ Yes, I cannot wait for fall!
    Hugs,
    Anne and the Furs

  11. Renee says:

Love this. I keep thinking it is time to start bringing my fall things out. But waiting a bit longer although leaves are beginning to fall and the nights are getting cooler (days are still in the 90s). I love fall and Halloween. Halloween and Christmas are my favorite holidays.

  12. I love this beyond words! Oh how perfect the decor is, I love everything, it’s hard to even pick out anything I love best! I wish I could move into that witches cottage!

  13. Each of these pictures is so magical, I can’t wait for your Halloween Blog Party!
Our pumpkins finally started growing. I posted a couple of pictures on my blog. Now we’re just hoping they ripen in time 🙂

  14. Jenn A. says:

“…(O)nce you enter this hauntingly magical world… You might never be able to leave… Even if you want to…”
The main question is: Who would want to?
Loved this when I first read it, and still love it today – magical and transporting. The photos are never-endingly entrancing – so very, very much to see! Thank you for the trip down Haunted Memory Lane.
And, hooray for Autumn – I couldn’t wait any longer and started putting up a few decorations last week. (Just on the inside of the house, though.) Only 68 more days ‘till Hallowe’en!

  15. Super magical and spooky. I had forgotten all about that post as well. It’s cool to look back and see a different time and relieve it again.
Today I’m going to the fabric store and then resuming my Halloween crafting. All of the fun places like JoAnn’s Fabric, Michaels, Dollar Tree and the like are getting some of their seasonal decorations in and I’ve been going nutso with inspiration. Yay!

  16. OHHHH i love it…please…please…let me know if you make a Halloween Blogparty this year…it´s my favorit time of the year…let the magic beginn !!!
    BOO
    Kerstin from germany

  17. Carrie says:

I don’t know if you’ll ever get this, but how big is the place you do this in? Like 10 x10?? just curious! Your a master at magic!

  18. Love spells says:

This is ABSOLUTELY beautiful, we try to decorate our working space like this too but you have put so much detail into decorating it’s absolutely insane. That golden leaf chandelier… Will add your facebook page too, inspiring!
