Pretty on a Thursday: Nature Break

I think we need a little nature break, after the major oogie spooky real tales we shared yesterday, don't you?

Pretty 13

A simple and quiet stroll through my garden…

A bit of fresh air sound good?

Pretty 6

The white cosmos blooming this fall are huge, as are most of the other flowers around the garden.  I wonder why?  I can't explain it, but I like it 😉

Pretty 5

Purple zinnias.

Nature colors shock me good.

I planted rows of all kinds of zinnias and marigolds in spring, that are now blooming.

Most got gobbled by rabbits and sucked into the earth by gophers.  But those that made it are plentiful.  I think I have decided that I can't live without marigolds and zinnias in the garden.

Pretty 14

Although, I feel the same way about dahlias too…

Pretty 18

And salvia.

And herbs.

And passion fruit.

And nasturtium.  (I love eating the spicy leaves)

And morning glory vines.

Pretty 3

I never knew that morning glory vine flowers would bloom hundreds at a time, and the size of my face too…

Pretty 1

Aren't they just lovely?

A blue flower always knocks my socks off.

I mean, smurfs.

Smurfs I tell ya.

Pretty 2

Huge lovely blue nature.

Pretty 12

A salvia & black eyed susan nook…

Pretty 4

3 ft+ marigolds.

Pretty 15

They are so generous.

This is their season.

Pretty 16

There are also 4 ft. yellow flowers everywhere I turn.  I have to wade through them throughout our property.

Weeds say some.

Treasures, I say.

Then I follow that up with, achooo achoooooo 🙂

Pretty 17

I also have to stop and marvel at the Alice Dupont Mandevilla, which has bloomed several flowers everyday, all summer (in record heat) and now through fall.  The blooms always make me think of Somepinkflowers

Pretty 19

Oh and, last night, two furry children came over with our beloved pipe magician.

Lady, and Gurley Man.

The first time Matty met Lady and Gurley, he went nutzz.

The second time he bit Gurley.  He didn't draw blood, but still.

The third time, last night, I asked Mister Lovee to please let me handle the fur baby to fur baby contact ratio.  I sat with all of them, loved them and hugged them all, fed everyone treats, had them all sniff each other, and then……

Pretty 8

Before you know it, Gurley and Matty were running around like old pals.

Lady found them all quite boring.

But the boys had a blast.

Pretty 10

Matty looks like a runt next to his HUGE cousins.

They are just massive creatures.

And yet, Matty still bullies them around.

I love my Napoleon 🙂

Makes me want more, soon.

Pretty 9

I need more fur in my garden.

So does Matty.

He was so sad when they left.

But, they will return on Sunday.

Pretty 7

So, that was a stroll in the gardenia.

Take a marigold with you before you skip off…

Pretty 11

🖤, V

ps:  Everyone and everything has been cloroxed to oblivion.  Now to prepare for mass work here on Sunday. Yay?

pss:  Random Song Fun:  If you think of a song, any song lingering in your head right now, no matter how random, what comes to mind right away???  Mine is this….  My fave part is the 1:53 – 2:30 mark.

  1. Tricia says:

Here’s mine! Flight of the Conchords, “Most Beautiful Girl…” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89zOtd6VAiU

  2. Belinda Mae says:

You are right about getting Matty a friend. When we got our dog Grace from the shelter after a week then we decided she needed a friend so we went back and got Martha. Needless to say our cat Mollie in all fairness needed a friend so we also brought home Miss Ruby. That was last winter and I don’t know how we ever lived without them! As for the song thing mine is Ordinary Miracle by Sarah McLachlan. It runs through my brain reminding me of what a blessing each and ever day is – good or bad and to try to live it to is fullest. Try is the key word here – we are after all only human – and the honor is in our trying and our successes. Belinda Mae

  3. Kar says:

The song I most think of and find myself humming most often is If I Only Had a Brain from the Wizard of Oz. It’s strangely pleasant and grand. And it always cheers me up.

  4. always a pleasure to walk thru your garden with you. I am so in love with your morning glory, that colour!!!!
Plenty of fur at my house, but the four puppies go to their new homes this weekend, it means we can start training the one we are keeping, I do like a well behaved fur baby!
so here is my song, i have been singing it all night, seeing as I have been kept up with mosquitos, We brought this DVD for Indi so she could love all old school movies too. So now she is obsessed with ‘Jem and the Hollograms’.

Thanks for reminding me of smurfs, Im gonna find her them today.
Ewwwww cant wait to see what happening on Sunday!!

  5. Cindy says:

Your garden is so beautiful. Yes, fur babies need friends too. The song I hear most is Smile by Uncle Kracker.

  6. Kathy says:

This absolutely took my breath away. Those morning glories are divine!
As for the song this is easy:
    Thunder Road
    Springsteen

  7. Your flowers look wonderful, Vanessa! I love the purple and yellow combo myself. Everything is getting ready to go to sleep here now, even my mums.

  8. What a bright and cheerful stroll through the garden. Matty is such a love, I think a furry friend would be good for him and for you as well. <3
As for the song stuck in my head today:

  9. stacy says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this song. Suddenly, I’m 18, in the car with t-tops and driving around “the square” for the 25th time. God, I was cool.
    Speaking of that…here’s my song~~~~

  10. Beautiful flowers V! And that Matty…I knew he was an undercover lovey 😉
    Jamie 🙂

  11. a fanciful twist says:

We have been working on getting a new fur baby. We are still healing and mending from losing our beloved girl. We miss her so much, I can’t even describe it.
But we are now feeling more ready for a new family member 🙂
    YAY!

  12. Carrie Lee says:

What a lovely garden… mine is getting chilly so it nice to walk through yours. Thanks V.
Here is a pretty little ditty….

  13. Laura says:

    Oh, V—-your poor plumbing woes.
The plumber drawing cracked me up.
Matty’s friends look RELATED, don’t they?
Wouldn’t it be weird if they were really distant cousins?
I love dahlias and nasturtiums but kill them.
Adam plays this a lot, and I refer to it as “The Ghost’s Love Song”.
It’s lodged in my head right now, but it’s a good time of year for it, I guess.

  14. Theresa says:

Hi Vanessa, I always enjoy a lovely walk through your gardens. Most of our flowers are long gone – except for our mums (one of my favorites). And it’s been SO gloomy here. So, it was nice to see a bright shiny day and glorious morning glories. That blue is so vibrant! And how sweet to see young Matty bonding with some other pups. It’s a good thing for him – and it sounds like you did such a wonderful job being the furry g-between. 🙂 You’ll know when the time is right for another furry baby. No need to rush. 🙂
As for music, this Halloween cult classic has been on my mind since Tuesday night. Plus, it brings back fond memories from my wedding when I “did the Time Warp again!” This video is from Glee – my guilty pleasure.

  15. Dawn says:

Marigolds and Zinnias are the staples of my garden–They do so well all summer long and through the fall even when the weather is cooling!

  16. now with wolves like that hanging about, that would make you
    Little Red Riding Hood
    🙂
    the dogs are amazing
    and
something cool, related to bears, don’t you know! i think dogs descended from bears…i love that! and you! xoxo
a favourite song of long ago of mine:

  17. Kim says:

    *sigh*…such beautiful, flowery, furry goodness.

  18. Linda Diane says:

Ah, a nice, beautiful garden post after yesterday’s plumbing nightmare. A breath of fresh air, literally! Such beautiful pictures. We have an abelia bush in front of our porch, and butterflies and bees love it. I have had a couple of people act alarmed when they see the bees, but they are very well-mannered bees, staying close to the little white flowers. There a not a huge number at any one time, and they never bother us–just go about their business enjoying our flowers, and I am happy they come.
Awww, so glad that Matty has some friends and that he acted like a good boy! “Gurley Man” is such a funny name. Bet there is a good story behind that!

  19. Linda Diane says:

Oops. Lousy proofreader alert. My post above should say, “There ARE not a huge number at any one time . . . ” I think you probably figured that one out, but I was very perturbed at myself and wanted to make an *official* correction. : )

  20. I love the way marigolds smell. Geraniums, too. Your morning glories look like “Heavenly Blue” just gorgeous. Did you know they grown great in your house? So do marigolds, just a sunny window. Plant in Sept. for Christmas blooms. Your garden is lovely and so are your furry babies. 🙂 come see my new fur babies named Thunder and Lightning.

  21. McKayla says:

Song: Right as Rain, Adele! 🙂

  22. Hello, Miss Vanessa, twinkle toes, and green thumb expert…
Well, the song that just popped into my head was ‘Raindrops keep falling on my head…’ I have no clue why! Although it is supposse to rain tomorrow night.
What glorious morning glories you have, they are so huge! And 4 ft. high marigolds, just unheard of! Your garden(s) are a paradise.
And Matty’s cousins are beautiful dogs!
The Haunting day is coming up fast, so
    Happy Ghoulish Haunting to you!
I hope the stores have begun to sell egg nog…I have been dying to have some!
    Random thoughts:
    My favorite fragrance is Shalimar…
My favorite time of year is fall…
And my favorite animal is the snow leopard…
‘And I think to myself, what a wonderful day…’ another song.
    Miss Teresa

  23. linnea-maria says:

Wonderful flowers! The morning glory really are smurf-blue, never thought of that before. Have a wonderful weekend /Therese

  24. Susan G says:

Vanessa, what a beautiful post!! I love the flower tour. sadly my yard is vastly overrun and uncared for. Since becoming disabled, and hubby getting older (he is 69 now) there is now time for the luxuries of flower beds etc. We haven’t even had a veggie garden since the summer of 2004. I miss it all. we have 5 acres, most of it wooded, but the 2-ish acres that are between the old barn and the road, used to be pretty-ish…the colors were still out of ratio to the green, but it at least looked decent. I really wish i had the money to have a landscaper come in and redo the flower beds and finish the new one I had started with natural stones before the injury.
so the song in my head is California Dreaming…stuck on the verse of all the leaves are brown (not yet they are still yellow and green, but it is coming)
    Anyway, come visit:

  27. JO says:

As for Matty .. sounds like you got things under control… I am having a bit of a time with PJ too… she has been quite skittish since we moved here with all the new noises … bless her heart… she is so sweet but she is very protective too…
    HUGS

  28. Miss Linda says:

  32. Wendy says:

Your garden is so beautiful, Vanessa! You’re such an Earth Goddess 🙂 I can just see you having a “Butterfly Bush” there to attract the wee faery hummingbirds. And Morning Glories are one of my favorite flowers. They’re so witchy and powerful. Have you ever thought of having a moonlight garden where the flowers only open their petals under the moonlight. I can imagine you planting each flower with love and then them blooming for you. For some reason an old 80’s song by the group “Foreigner” is going through my mind. Not my favorite song. Did you know that when you get a song stuck in your mind it’s called an “earworm”? hee-hee 😉

Hello Vanessa: I read, but don’t always comment these days because I’m on the run, but today I just had to! I love the marigolds…so beautiful! The beauty of your blog never fades!

  35. marjorie says:

My goodness me!! It’s like summer has appeared all over again!! What bliss! 🙂 Here it’s all crunched leaves and barren branches….which is lovely, too….but your garden….SWOOOON! 🙂

  36. Alia says:

Haha, Theresa read my mind about Time Warp! I was just listening to the Rocky Horror soundtrack in my car today. Your garden is sooo pretty, you must put so much love into it. Half my plants on the patio dried up even though I was doing my best to care for them. It amazes me that you can have such a lush garden here!
umm ps. I am bad at sending things and your little gifty probably won’t be there until next week, sorry! But it is coming eventually, never fear.

  37. Alia says:

Also this song because of all the little bug friends that live in your garden!

  39. Katharine says:

All the puppies to play with!! Matty must have had a ball. lol I never had 2 cats before and after getting my 2 fur babies I vow I’ll always have 2 (except it gets to be twice as expensive ugh). I just love when hey clean each other and cuddle. awww!! then they fight like sisters do.

  40. Shell says:

I have been obsessed with the song “For Your eyes only” by Sheena Easton.

  41. deb jacobs says:

right now my brain is playing “some girls are bigger than others” by the smiths.(or morrissey, i forget which)

  42. devil mood says:

    The photos are beyond beautiful!
The colour in the those morning glories…heavenly!
And how gorgeous is Matty these days? He’s like one of those kids than turn into dapper young men, you know? haha And I thought I was seeing double (triple!) when I saw him with his furry cousins.
    Hope you’re having fun xx

  43. Laurie G says:

This is what’s playing in my head right now after looking at your blog for the last 10 minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1Ul3fteLps&ob=av2e
