November Days

We interrupt our regular posting schedule, to whisper about faces snuggled in petals, and secrets held in dew drops…  Sound silly?  Don't tell Alice…

November Flowers 16

She takes these sort of things ever so seriously.

You see, before she began her maiden voyage to her new home weeks and weeks ago, she asked me to make certain that I…

Talk to flower petals.

Yes yes I know, I might come off as a loon, standing, talking to flower petals.  But, as you can imagine, I am way past that.  The loon meter has already rocked off the charts 😉

So, with the abundance of November flowers in my garden…

(I planted all these from seed in spring)

November Flowers 4

I make sure to, at the very least, thank them aloud.

It has been in the 70's here by day, so the flowers are very happy.  They are stretching their legs from all the heat they had this summer and into autumn, and are quite enjoying the cool.

November Flowers 2

Alice did say, to make sure to peer into the center of the flowers, so that they could get a good look at me, when I speak to them.

 So I do.

November Flowers 3

Then they whisper back…

Don't miss the surprise white pumpkin amongst the aloes, on the other side of the gypsy wagon…

November Flowers 15

Of course, I skip around, thrilled.

My garden is a jungle, no one can see my antics :)

(or so I think)

Thrilled with November flowers, and two surprise pumpkins grown from squishy pumpkin seeds at the end of summer, Matty and I go out to explore our yard more.

November Flowers 13

These are the kind of days that fill my cup.

Bees and tiny butterflies.

Sap on trees.

Roses in November, with a pinker color than ever.

November Flowers 6

I fall smitten with most beautiful cupcake frosting rose I have ever beheld, right at the foot of my front steps…

November Flowers 5

She reminds me, this rose…

"Get your seeds ready for planting as soon as it gets cooler…"

Some flower seeds like a cool snap in the dirt, before the spring warmth comes, like poppies.  I plan to seed buckets.

November Flowers 1

The most important thing I learned is that, I will always keep cosmos and zinnias and marigolds in my garden.  They bloom in spring and in autumn.

They are so kind, and gift baskets of flowers.

I have filled 6+ vases, with huge marigolds, this autumn alone.

Oh and, morning glory vines too….

Oh, I mustn't forget, my little carnation bush seems to bloom year round.

November Flowers 7

I also want more trees.  And I realize, I must start planting now.  For, if I get to live here until I am a wee old lady, I will have to plant now, to have tree soldiers, huge and full, in the next few decades…

I make plans.

I am not a true planner.

But, garden plans, I can handle.

I set out on a stroll, to think about this planning garden thing.

I walk down my street, turn left, and then stop at my favorite spot.

November Flowers 11

To the left, a home has a well loved tree garden that I marvel at everyday.

To the right, rows and rows of trees with berries.

November Flowers 12

I stand there, and notice the gate at the end of the little road is open.

Of course, I don't venture in.  I just stand there and soak in the trees and the sun, and the mountains.  Then two people come down the road in a car.  I smile and wave, and they glare at me.

And I think, "Hey, wait, did you see your trees?  Did you see the way the sun is peeking through the berries, glowing beauty?"

November Flowers 10

This is a storybook path.

I hope they see it.

Those who live down it.

But if they don't, it's okay.

I will make sure to visit the trees, and tell them how pretty they are.

Matty and I go back home and I finish filling my vases.  And I think, I never want to take my own garden and trees and every living thing for granted.  I hope we don't ever do that, I say to myself.

November Flowers 8

Then Mister Lovee calls me over and says, look, look at this tiny horned toad, sitting by a row of working ants.  The ants carrying dry wood and petals themselves.

Then Mister Lovee looks at my flowers, and gets a sparkle in his eye, and says, "those flowers, my goodness, the colors, they are prettier than any bouquet I could gift you from the store…"

I make him smell my marigold scented hands, a tinge mothbally.

We laugh.

And then I realize, we don't take our parcel of dirt, and roots and trees and petals for granted, at all.

Thank you petals.

November Flowers 14a

A happiness overcomes me, as I sit silently, vases full of nature gifts.

As the sun sets, I go inside and think up some new crocheted hats, like this funny one I made.  I cover my face for the photo because I have a make-upless face (a regular look these days).  But then, I have no shame snapping a shot in my pj's 😉

November Flowers 18

Then I get cozy, crocheting by night.  And, I glance over at…

November Flowers 9

My sleeping boy.

What a lovely November day.

Life isn't perfect, and yet, it is

Isn't it?

If we take the time to notice what really counts, what really fills our cup…?

With that I will say, see you very very soon.  I hear little paws coming through the studio and into the office, yay!

A fanciful twist sparkly heart

ps:

1 random thing.

My sister is so funny, and tongue in cheek.  As different as we are (I a Sag, she an Aries), and as much as we have annoyed each other through the years, I adore her.  She is the one person that will always fall on the floor with me laughing, because the same things make us laugh.   Recently, she called me laughing hysterically about this turban I tried to give her last summer…  This is the funny turban tale

pss:  I used to have a Category list in my right hand side bar, where you could see the different categories of blog posts that I have written.  Yesterday I moved it up to the navigation bar right under my blog banner.  It is called, Categories and Archives. I don't know if anyone even cares :)  But, that's where it is.

  1. Rebecca says:

How lovely…your post reminds me of when I watched my 18 year old walk around with his grandfather when he was just a toddler…they would talk to the evergreen trees that they had planted to help them grow. Today (16 years later) I always smile when I see how far they have reached for the sky…. 😉

  2. Flowers in November!!!
    !!!
    Marvellous!
Here, everything is covered with snow. Not a lot yet, maybe 4 inches or so. Luckily it’s been sunny lately. We really need it since there’s only daylight for a few hours a day… Last year I had the suckiest October and November – didn’t see the sun AT ALL for six weeks! Gah. I wish there were flowers instead.

  3. mermaiden says:

stretching then basking in the glory of The Lady’s gifts…beautiful 😀

  4. Stephanie says:

oh! Your marigolds are FIST sized!! I feel in love with piles of Marigolds stuffed into big rusted tin cans painted blue and fuchsia…
happy BEautiful fall day to you…(no more flowers and snow melting in little pockets over here)
    x..x

  5. Miss Linda says:

What beautiful flowers you grow…truly awesome. The temp. here today is 52. no more blooming flowers till spring, but I can always tune into your blog to see how beautiful they are. I am a sag too. Happy week to you.

  6. Alia says:

Um, have I mentioned how jealous I am of your garden? Oh yeah, only like every time I comment, silly me 🙂 Anyway It is beautiful! I would pay money to hang out there, you know, if it was one of those public gardens like the Portland Rose Garden? You are such a lucky lady. I don’t know what those people have to glare about, living near all those wonderful trees. Some people are just perpetually grumpy for no reason. I feel sad for people like that. The weather here has been lovely! I can’t help but laugh at all my friends back home where it has snowed.

  7. Sarah says:

Beautiful beautiful Vanessa! No life isn’t perfect but it is-I love that! I too have been appreciating the November beauty today and have so enjoyed seeing yours. YOur neighbour’s tree garden looks amazing and Mr Lovee is right about those colours! Matty looks so happy with his reindeer too. As always a lovely visit.
    xx

  8. Yo, sis, it was 27 degrees here this morning, so quite making me jealous with your gorgeous flowers and wonderful weather…. mmmk?
Just joking, but seriously, you make me jealous. Did you know that our Grandpa Valencia used to say that in order to really live in harmony with the earth, we have to sing to plants to thank them for giving us something beautiful. I do believe that is an indigenous principle of reciprocity. Anyway, he used to make me sing to the apple tree wit him before we picked apples AND before we could drink the syrup from the honeysuckle flowers in the empty lot where our uncles used to play baseball…. that’s one of my favorite childhood memories…. and one I don’t share often.
    Save me some sunshine….

  9. Yes, it truly is the little things darling V…this week has been crazy for me – the winds of change are definitely blowing, but thankyou for the reminder that I need to go and play in my own garden…that is what I shall do today – it is a beautiful Spring day and my roses are blooming like crazy! (I had a dream the other night, and you were in it – isn’t that funny?)

  10. Renee says:

Vanessa your post just made me happy. The flowers are beautiful. We always have marigolds, cosmos and zinnias. And I always have to have petunias and impatiens. I’ve planted a lot of carnations because they come back every year.
There is so much beauty around us if we just take time to see it.
I can’t believe those people glared at you. Too bad they couldn’t see the beauty and smile, too.
I have a pumpkin over there that I’m going to take to a corner of the yard and give the seeds a chance to come up and grow next year.

  11. Renee says:

How could I forget to tell you how beautiful Alice is. And how handsome your boy is.
And how beautiful your pink roses are.

  12. All of the flowers are breathtaking but the pink cupcake roses make me *ache* with their beauty. Matty sleeping with his ChrisMoose, or is that a bear? lol

  13. Theresa says:

Hello Vanessa! Your gardens are so lovely. And what a gorgeous bouquet! I can see you skipping merrily along the storybook path. There are some places which are just so magical. There is a lovely trail near our home (which I post about often) – it doesn’t matter how many times we visit there. It is always magical, as there is always something new to see. 🙂 I LOVE your adorable little crochet hat. It looks so cute and quite warm. I’ve been working on little knit goodies. Tis the time of year. Hope you are well! Theresa xoxo

  14. Such pretty mums !!!!

  16. Oh, what a lovely post Vanessa! To not take the small things, the earth, our blessings for granted. Your flowers are beautiful…and your Matty so cute cuddling with his stuffed animal. Always a great outlook on life, you know what’s important, I love it 😉
    Jamie 🙂

  17. a very dear friend of mine died from prostate cancer today and your favourite spot photo gave me the greatest sense of calm…he is in heaven and at peace…it is hard for his family and those who loved him as i did but god shows us his goodness and power everday and not one of us should ever take that for granted.
thank you miss v, somehow your blog is a refuge and i dont even think you realise.
    xxrosey

  18. leslie cohoon says:

  19. Miss Lori says:

The flowers are so beautiful. Today I need to wander around Home Depot, Miss Miranda has a school science project due at the end of the month, and we decided to do hers on plants. We will plant some seeds in a pot in the house in a dark corner, then plant some in a pot on the patio in full sun, and see who comes along first. Help! I haven’t done a science project for years and years! Wish us luck, we have our work cut out for us.

  20. EarthyPaws says:

It has been so rainy here for days. Your bright and beautiful flowers are just what is needed! 😀

  21. deborah says:

Oh yes, life IS perfectly imperfect. I can see why that is your favorite spot to stop. The magical world you have created. DeLovely. I am certain you are equally beautiful sans make-up…like my own Alice…then she reminds me of my little girl. **blows kisses** Deb

  22. Krista Komis says:

Love. this. post. So many of us take things for granted. I’m so glad you don’t, because it reminds us all not to take things to seriously, and to enjoy the best gifts that are free in life- nature and family – and to just embrace what life brings us with an upbeat attitude 🙂

  23. Jill James says:

love your turban tale!!! Remember Grey Gardens? She was way ahead of her time also w/the scarf wraps….oh & the Aries thing? My husband & daughter are Aries’ & I’m the lone Cancer! (fireworks) Your plants are doing so well because a Sagittarius is speaking to them!!!

  24. Chris says:

I totally care about your archives. AND, I love your p.s. parts. Like, you can’t quite leave yet because you have more goodies.
    crocheting by night? WOW.
I love january, because we have TONS of meyer lemons. mmmm

  25. Lynette says:

Oh..your big, gorgeous flowers were such a treat to stumble onto on this windy wet Vancouver day that holds the promise of snow! I love that you talk to them, cherish them, take full advantage of their beauty and thank them for it. We still have a riot of red and orange leaves twisting about in the autumn wind, but flowers will have to be store-bought for the next stretch.
I also adore your Alice. I think she comes closest to being the Alice I see in my mind when reading about her…:)
    Lynette

  26. Laura says:

    Hey V-
I really really like that vibrant violet colored marigold. Wouldn’t that make a pretty cupcake, with layered little petals of icing? You’d have to use that really thick pasty color, though.
Makeupless, my foot—-I SEE a splash of that tarty sparkly tangerine shimmering away. And is that a Jessica McClintock dress? I squeal when I find one of those in a thrift store.
MAtty!! MATTY and his reindeer! Oh! I want to give him scritches. Except he’d bite me.
    Happy day, V!!!!

  27. Katharine says:

Do you have a special trick for planting the seeds? I have clay soil and temps almost as bad as yours. Well over 100 and cold in the winter but rarely freezing.
I just love the stuff I bought from you and all the extra little cards. Thanks!!!
My daughter recognized your name when we got the package. She was excited too!
    Katharine

  28. What a bummer! I never even saw you post Alice in your Etsy shop.
    Whine, whine, whine,
I hope she is enjoying her new home.
    =^..^=
