Today is a funny day. A huge storm rolled in last night, but it was the oddest storm. Hot wind, very hot wind with thick clouds of humidity. My mom called on the phone and said, are you getting hit with a storm? A haboub is on its way to you.
No sooner had she called than a wall of orange thick air came towards us. Something I had never experienced where I am in Arizona. Followed by rain and crazy intense lightning.
Chaos erupted in the yard, things being broken, torn about, swung around, madness.
And then, a loud explosion and no electricity.
It was quite exciting.
I love weather.
I was enjoying gathering candles and such.
That was until we noticed that the storm was not cooling things down and after 100' weather, to have no a/c (electricity) and lots of moisture, was oh so pleasant.
It got dark so fast, and I went to bed.
I pretended it was 1912, and I was in Savannah, in sweltering humidity.
I was in my bed, looking up at an evil goblin shadow made by the candle.
Fanning myself with a piece of cardboard.
Thinking about how dependent we are on electricity.
Sort of freaking out about it really.
Then I realized that if the electricity was out, the well would stop pumping water soon.
So, I filled up a bunch of containers with water.
Then I sat in the darkness, with one candle, and pondered our dependence on electricity even more.
I started to doze off.
Dreaming about a painting I was working on – which morphed into killer raccoons, and a flash flood in the garden with a rogue boat that almost killed Lovee, which I saved him from. Of course, you get to be wonder woman in your own dreams. ha.
Oh gosh.
I woke up.
I went outside and saw some large containers I had in the driveway had lost their lids, and they were full of water. Things I loved were inside (which I should have put away already but it's been too hot), so of course, damage control ensued. Then I found out another container had been damaged and had mold in it on treasures, fabric etc. I was so sad.
More damage control.
And yet, there was a sense of calm in me.
Like, oh well.
I tried to do all I could without water or electricity in the dark.
Filling up jugs of water, and pouring them into the washing machine with bleach water.
Worked on that for a long while.
Then I went to bed again.
I had another nightmare in that hot dark heat.
I woke up, and went outside.
Have you ever made the mistake of going to a carnival, and getting into a haunted walk through ride, that is in a trailer or semi truck? It's hot and dark, and you feel like you will hyperventilate if you don't get out soon?
I did that once a few years ago.
I told Mister Lovee that the air last night felt like being in that dark hot carnival walk through ride thingamajig.
I said, I think that ride scarred me, because I think about it all the time. People pushing, trying to get out. Hot smoke, pitch darkness, feeling your way around. Screams. Screeching sounds.
Me too, he said.
You too? I said.
Funny, we both thought about it but had never talked about it.
I walked down the driveway in pitch darkness, and could see the guys in the far distance working on the electric poll. Transformer blew or something.
I wanted to take them a plate of cookies.
Thank them somehow.
As the lights went on and I was still at the end of the driveway, I screamed YAYYYYY!!!!! And clapped as loud as I could.
It was 2:30 a.m.
I stayed up until 5:30.
I watched the movie Albert Nobbs.
Matty Miles cuddled up.
And, I felt guilty for loving my air conditioning.
But that was leveled off by my sheer happiness in cold air glory.
This morning I appreciated every bit of the comforts we have in life.
I stole Mister Lovee's bag of cereal.
I made breakfast ever so slowly.
I love my electric tea kettle.
Today is painting day, so I wasn't going to pop in and say hello.
I try to just paint and nothing else on painting day.
But, I have blogs that I like to visit.
And I love when they pop in to share stories as such.
Regular life things, that don't mean anything, but mean everything at the same time.
Blogging is like a tunnel.
You only see a snippet here, a snippet there.
All the daily life stuff mostly gets lost.
We know people through a tunnel vision.
I like the extra stuff too though, do you?
Like…
I love seeing what people have for breakfast or dinner or lunch.
I love hearing about mundane daily things, that aren't mundane at all really.
There's a curious comfort I find in it.
When I watch cooking shows, I am drawn to the crackling of opening bags.
The the clipping sounds of chopping.
The crunch in the tasting.
I love the sounds.
The little things.
The extras.
I loooove outtakes at the end of movies.
Bloopers, and slip ups.
I love seeing famous people being regular.
Because they are.
Only their job makes them visible to everyone.
They aren't super human.
But everyone expects them to be.
We all say and do stupid things from time to time.
Don't you hate that word?
We all judge each other.
I find myself often saying, who cares?
Who cares what anyone does?
Who cares if they mess up, or trip, or don't perform so well?
Who cares what people look like, how they did or didn't do this or that?
Who cares?
Can't we all just give each other a break?
Trivial things make me so annoyed.
Especially people trivializing things.
I really have to yell at myself when I fall into trivializing things.
I have these heart to hearts with myself.
Move on, get over it.
Who cares.
Don't drown in a glass of water kid (as my dad would say).
I'm just happy that the a/c works again.
And that there are things to eat from the earth.
And that, I have people and furs to love.
And that, there was tea and yogurt and fruit this morning.
And that, I am healthy.
And mostly, that paint is waiting for me, to take me on journeys to those sacred places painting takes you to.
Little planets in other realms.
Where pups have eyebrows?
Yes I know, rotten of me.
But, I saw this thing that said, on bath day, use a non-toxic eye pencil to make your doggie some fancy eyebrows, because it washes right off.
Miles was a ham in his new eyebrows.
And they did wash right off in the bath.
🙂
Love, V
ps: My sister's pics from the Grand Canyon are stunning. Wish I had been there…

Oh. My. God. If I didn’t already love you to peices. I do so much more today. HAHAHAHA! Poor sweet Miles and his wonderful expressive brows! 😀 How fabulous! Makes me wonder what kind of brows~ oh~ or mustache my kitties would prefer? hmm? heehee!!!
What an adventure….but your description of that carnival walk-thru gave me the shivers! What a surreal experience to be Dorothy on the farm one minute….and in a Dark candlelit Oz the next….
I just love the way you make everything a lesson in appreciation…and savoring…
What else is Life about if not to savor? 🙂
Hugs to you…and Groucho Barx ;P
HAHAHA!! Oh yes, Grouch Barx for sure!!!!!!!I so agree, have to go
tell Mister Lovee 😉

Goodness but that last photo just made my day!
I am like you… appreciating the comforts we have come to expect but oh so aware of the impact they have on our easy lives. What would it be like to be plunged into darkness for days on end, no air, no lights, no stove, no running water? That would surely be a hardship, and yet there are people in this world who deal with that every single day. We have much to be blissed out about and the simplest things are the best.
Again. Those eyebrows slay me. Give that furry face a big ole kiss from me. Muwah!
Enjoy the day.
Erin
Orange and gold came to town:
With a roaring wild windy sound.
Running and funning and turning off lights,
Bringing the dreams past the twilight.
Light shows and rain and creeks in the night,
Water is running through buckets all right.
And yet in the air of wind and rain,
A girl lit a candle and whispered a name.
ANd just as soon as the name left her lips
It flew on a breeze that flew with a zip.
It tangled and dangled ah so momentarily,
On the mighty limb of the gypsy tree.
The name it then dashed up and took flight,
Into the smelting dreams of gold light.
It turned and tossed and twirled around,
Falling spiraling towards the ground.
Landing suddenly with a sigh not heard,
The name rested as the girl understood.
That no matter how wild the world can be,
It’s the little things that matter you see.
The candle, the girl, the eyebrows that rise,
Life is waiting in this worlds glorious surprise.
So off I go to cafe V.V. to sip tea and eat pie,
And remember my dreams as the blogs fly by.
I sooo adore this post V.V. …What fun and wondrous adventures you bring.
Grouch-o-Barx…BWahahahaha….ahhhhh….BWahahahahaha!!! Iced tea almost through the nose tooooo funny. I love Love LOVE the eyebrows!!!! Miles is such a good sport!!!
I’m sorry the weather was a little on the scary side and the electric took a hike with the haboub. Many, many moons ago for about 5 years I lived out in the middle of nowhere in Guthrie, AZ, poplulation oh maybe 15 on a busy day. Anyway, our electricity would go out quite regularly during monsoon season. I too love big weather and don’t mind the electics going out but the heat and humidity can get a girl down, for sure. I am sooooo thankful for whoever invented modern air conditioning! Bless their wee cotton socks :o)
Happy painting and have a great day.
Always, Queenie
Loving that hilarious photo of Miles…
Vanessa,
Power outages! Yikes! I know that power outages can definitely provoke some thoughtful reflections–about our lives and our dependency on electricity. How did people used to do it? But I’m glad everything is okay now :). And I know what you mean about the famous people thing. I mean, they are just regular people, like anyone else. But the thing is, they decide to put themselves out there. They make the decision to show themselves to the world. And it is impossible, then, for them not to be judged. We say that we shouldn’t judge people. But the fact of the matter is, that is impossible.
Unless you are a robot, you judge people. Whether you judge them for good or bad is up to you. But you judge them, whether you like it or not. The same applies for blogging. If you create a blog, you are putting yourself out there. You are allowing people to enter into your world. And you can’t please everyone. So the whole “who cares” attitude is great an all, but I think it is difficult to be impartial to any comment someone makes. If we want to give each other a break, we shouldn’t keep posting things about ourselves online. Because in doing so, we are sharing our lives. We don’t share our entire lives, true. But this only means that people can only judge us based on what we have posted. Herein lies the predicament. So if we don’t like people to judge us, we shouldn’t post anything at all. Because the Internet is accessible to almost everyone. (Another part about how dependent we are on electricity!)
Just food for thought 🙂
I felt for you, reading this, as we just had a brownout during the night, this weekend – and though we don’t have a/c (I don’t think we get nearly as hot in SoCal as your area, but it has been more humid than usual here, this year) – without the fans to circulate the outside air through the house it was a bit stifling. So glad you (and we!) have power again. Hurray for the power people!
And hurray for doggy brows too. Miles looks so handsomely expressive, he somehow reminds me of a French movie star.
p.s. Funny coincidence with your ship dream, haunted fun house imaginings, etc. I stayed up much too late last night, to finish Duma Key, which has a sort of artistic perspective, with a nightmare ship, a haunted house and strange humid, hurricane weather, featuring in it…I don’t read much horror nowadays, but that one had insisted I must(sometimes books insist you read them – or, I should say, they can sometimes make Me, do that, anyway). Not sure if I’d recommend it, as I haven’t made up my mind how I feel about the story yet…Loved bits of it, disliked others. But consequently, I didn’t sleep till the wee hours of the morning, either. Odd little coincidences, though…
p.p.s. Stay cool!
Jessica, I think the who cares attitude becomes easier as you get
older. You just can’t care about trivial things forever, or the
fact is your life is empty. Certain things just are not as important as
you grow up and mature. You’ll see one day how things start to morph and change with passing years 🙂
What I mean by saying who cares is, does it really matter in
the grand scheme of things – and do we really have to waste time judging
others negatively and what they are doing?
We do, but should we?
Judging and passing judgment is easy until you start living life more with
passing years. Once you go through big things in your life, you feel
more for others. It’s a time and wiser thing, perhaps.
And yes, perception key. Why not give people a break, and say, wow
she’s great. Or he’s great. Instead of, she did this and that
wrong. Or acting mean out of jealousy. Why not have the sense of
self to say, yes that person is wonderful? And human, which means
imperfect.
We tend to see things through a negative outlook by default – and I
personally strive to see things through a positive outlook. It’s not
always easy, but I try. Trying is key.
But really…. to each his own, I have my own opinions you have yours, others have theirs.
That’s the beauty of life and free thought. Ain’t it grand? 🙂
Terri, that is a coincidence, WOW!! Its like, parallel universes
converging 😉 Loove it! Now – about that booooook 🙂
Well, look at Mr. Miles and his super cute eyebrows! That photo made me smile bigtime. 🙂 It is amazing how much we depend upon all things electrical. When we lost our power last October for well over a week, my hubby and I used our grill to cook meals and read by candlelight. We listened to news on a crank radio. It was kind of romantic for all of about…one day! LOL Then we got the use of a small generator so we didn’t lose all the food in the fridge. We could use one small light and I could dry my hair (after bathing in cold water). It really makes you appreciate all the more how those who came before us made due – and to be thankful for all the extra little amenities we sometimes take for granted. 🙂
Lovely Theresa, I totally agree!! I loved how you said romantic for about
1 day. So true isnt it??? Love, V

p.p.p.s. (or is it, p.s.s.s.?): Though I’m not so quick on the blogging and commenting wagon, nowadays, thank you for shining your light, sharing bits and bobs of your life through your blog. You make my day!
I know lots about power outages….Scary and spooky and calm all rolled into one. A stillness comes over me and I am constantly looking out the windows, looking for what in the darkness…I don’t know. We are all so spoiled and have to rely on it all, but I do have gallons of water and plenty of flashlights ready, crackers and fruit. We are never truly ready…we do freak at the slightest crack of thunder and the flicker of the lights. We are only human. it is however, time to think. It is always an adventure.
Nice post Miss Vanessa. Thanks for sharing.
**Giggle** Miles is just the cutest with those eyebrows! =D
My cats occasionally brush up agains me/my paint brushes/painting and get a colorfull addition… lolz
They then get scrubbed down to get the paint off. ^-^
Once, Britt lowered her paintbrush only to have the youngest cat rub right along it… he had a purple skunk stripe… @_@ and then promptly got a bath. ^-^
Glad to hear you got your power back! =D
Hope you guys didn’t get too much damage from the storm. Have a wonderful week! =D
XOXO
I can definitely see how the who cares attitude becomes more prominent and easier to understand as one grows older. And I have to agree–I definitely go to negative thought by default. And being positive is something that I strive to become in every aspect of life. But sometimes, it’s difficult. I’m sure you understand. Life happens. All I’m saying is that blogs are a window into our lives. And regardless of what we present through that window, we shall be judged. Tis the nature of life. Negativity is a part of that package. Sorry 🙂
Just started reading your blogs…truely love em. I too am an artist and I work during the day to pay “the bills” and paint at nite. I am suppose to be painting now, but am throughly enjoying your blog too much to start but will as soon as I finish this! We had a severe storm in my area yesterday. no power failure though, but tried to paint and comfort my mastiff/pitbull mix who hates storms. Got some painting done..its for an outdoor show and how right you r bout the rude comments people make rite in front of you. But I got to the point also of “who cares”. I do what I like and most people seem to enjoy it too. Keep up the great blogs…enjoy em after a trying day at the pediatric office I work…Back to painting
Those eyebrows just crack me up, so funny!
And who cares if, whatever…………..
Love visiting blogs too just to see how other people live. Just love it.
Today the news was..Higher food prices due to hot dry weather…..I thought of you and your beautiful gardens of plenty and all the hard work that produced the bounty.
I am seeing things slowly, gently swinging back to more self sustaining times and less right here right now…
Entertainment from talented puppies with glamorous makeup and broom and wash basin orchestra.
Oh the soul would be lighter I think. I hope you enjoyed Albert Nobb…women have always endured the most trying of times in the most creative ways….dont you agree Vanessa 🙂 wink, wink, wink
My cyber🖤s have brighten my day and shooooed away many a cloudy day ….I know exactly who to visit everyday to remind me that the world is smaller than I believe and you are never truly alone…………🖤Debi

nutzzzzzo, they run right out in it. Get soaked, go back and forth.
We have to work to keep them inside. I wish they were afraid, then we
could cozy up under the covers and I could hug them. Instead I end up with
wet muddy loves!! hahahaaa!! Crazy maniacs my boys are. Hug your

I will hug him…he gets lots anyway! Love the shield sound! I’ll remember it this weekend. Probably will have to bounce a few…ha ha
Oh Miles, what a sweetie you are! Ha…I’m going to have to do that to Roscoe and see how long it takes my girls to notice 🙂 Glad your a/c came back on…whew, I can’t imagine how hot it would be w/o it! I totally get your ‘who cares’ take…I have become more and more like that too. Ya can’t please everyone and really…what does it get ya to try, ya know? I love the little things too!
Hugs,
Jamie 🙂
Oh! Miles is sooooo funny with those eye brows!!! I can just imagine him running around and being goofy and looking like a clown! I hated those freaky carnival trailers, just too claustrophobic for me too. They gave me the creeps…some of the carnival people gave me the creeps too.
Goodness! Your rain and lightning storm that came through sounded freaky. Sorry you lost some beloved possessions because of the wind taking lids off containers. Hope the mildew comes out on the stored fabric. I think lemon juice helps on some things if you squeeze a bit on the fabric and let it bleach out in the sun especially on more fragile things that regular bleach can break down the fibers.
Can’t wait to see what you are painting!
Yes, my brother in Virginia didn’t have power for five days when that terrible storm hit the lower east coast toward the end of June. Fortunately they were able to borrow a generator to keep cool with their A.C. running in their awful humidity.
I seriously find at least three new blogs everyday that I have never, ever been to. It is so inspiring to meet new bloggers and to see the kindred spirit link to individuals who have their own style, or new recipes, etc. I found a new blog yesterday of a lady who was sculpting a bust of her daughter in regular clay. She also had photos of bronze castings that someone had cast for her from her clay sculptures. So absolutely fascinating! I thought to myself ‘I could probably do that.'(the clay sculpting part). I think she lives in Colorado and is a member of an art council group. I love working with paper clay and the lady was such an inspiration and a very beautiful soul.
Did you see Frosted Petunias is hosting a ‘Night Carnival’ party at the end of September? Looks like fun, but I am up to my eye brows in other goings on, but I will enjoy whatever she comes up with.
Oh,about the ‘Who Cares?’ attitude…well it does get a bit nauseating on Yahoo and elsewhere when they ‘air’ everybody’s ‘dirt’ about celebrities. I think I saw Johnny Depp and his ex-wife at the Rose Bowl Flea Market and I crossed paths with them several times and I just smiled and minded my own business. It had to be them unless they both have doubles (this was way back in January)and he has a house in the Los Angles area, no less. Yes, they just want to lead normal lives, in stead of screaming meanies flailing all over them.
Ta! Ta!
Miss Teresa
Oh, those eyebrows!!!! They kill me!!!!!
funny how we take things for granted until we dont have them..i try to make sure i am thankful for all that i have. in church on sunday my youngest asked me what i was saying when i was praying after having the eucharist…i said first i start by thanking god for all that i have, my loving husband my wonderful children the roof over my head the family and friends that love me so much and then i pray for those who need help in my family, sick brother in law cancer ridden colleague and then i ask for a little help to make it through to the next month…he always answers my prayers but i take nothing for granted…
well that was a little bit DEEEEEP wasnt it!?! sorry ~_~
LOVE the eyebrows i think they should be a permanent fixture!
xxrosey
Dearest Miss V,
I absolutely love thunder storms. They are just perfectly exciting. I get really scared sometimes but being a mommy makes you also really strong. Like you could handle any kind of weather to protect your little ones. Even furry ones. But is awfully exciting to think that you are a captain of a ship being tossed and thrown by the waves at sea.
I know I am rambling. What I really wanted to say mostest was…I cannot stop full out laughing at Miles. So soooo funny. He needs to join me for a circus adventures. He would fit in perfectly.

As they say! It’s the little things in life that can bring JOY. Miles eyebrows brought me there today, Miss Vanessa! Thank you, for sharing! Big Cheshire grins going on here!
Just amazes me how that little puppy Miles, turned into this Adorable Big Gorgeous Boy!
You must be a proud Momma! 😉
It’s supposed to be 111-112 degrees tomorrow and the rest of the week here in Phoenix. Poor kiddos are headed back to school on Wednesday! Yikes!
Where did summer GO? What a great invention the air conditioner! <3<3<3
the eyebrows are fantastic…. better than mine!!! what a storm, i do love them, such majesty and it reminds us how strong mother nature is…. I do hope there wasnt too much damage. love to you, Mister Lovee and the boys from another wet morning where i live in England xxx
Wowee you guys have some extreme weather! I do love a good thunderstorm, they are so exciting. When we were little and it thundered in the night we’d get up with mum and dad and sit drinking tea watching it out the window. It seems ages since we’ve had a good “middle of the night” thunderstorm here. We’ve had a a few odd rumbles of thunder and lightening in the day time but I guess it hasn’t been warm enough for a proper storm.
Ha and there I go, rambling on about the weather and drinking tea, sticking to the English stereotype. 🙂
I loved your account of the storm and the blackout. I can only imagine how hot it is where you are right now! We don’t need a/c in Sweden, but we do need our heaters. A winter blackout is no fun…
Eyebrows on a dog…well, why not? Maybe eyelashes next?? HA!
I can swear to the fact that Savannah is not the best place to be in the summer. Heat and humidity all the time. I love it here, though.
😉
You should never feel guilty about enjoying your airconditioning..This year it has been on the top of my necessity list..Your “cereal” looks yummy..This time of year I live on peaches and garden tomatoes..Love the eyebrows..
Oh my, Vanessa:
How in the world did I miss this post yesterday? Hmmmm…
I love summer storms. I love bruised and orange skies and scary wind. But, I don’t love losing electricity. I guess, sometimes, losing something for a little while makes us realize how much we appreciate it!
Were those peaches on your cereal? I am so hungry right now…back on a diet! I would pay cash money for a big bite of cereal with peaches!
Hehehe….Eyebrows on Miles. Makes him look even more sophisticated!
Ohhhh, and I’ll run over and see the second batch of your sister’s Grand Canyon photos. I saw the first post, but again, I missed a bunch of blog reading yesterday. I was so busy opening up a new shop, working on a copy-edit job and dealing with a give-away on my blog, I guess I forgot to do my visits!

Hi Vanessa, you are one of my favorite blogs of all time! Do you have a blog button I can add to my site @http://mividalocacalistyle.blogspot.com/. Many Thanks & Blessings.
Smiles for Miles! 🙂
I’m glad you all made it safely through such a strange storm. It really does sound otherworldly. I live in an old Victorian house and we have had a very warm summer. One of my kitties, Mario, is terrified of thunder storms. Fortunately for him, it’s been quite dry here. Not so good for my garden. We water every day. No pumpkins yet. 🙁
I love your blog Vanessa. It takes me to a happy place. I really liked your article in Sommerset Life too.
hugs for your pupbabies!
I have a similar problem with our stuff. I have out in the yard because I have not had time to see what is in it to either put away or give away. It got hot a month earlier than usual so it blew the plans. When it rains we run around trying to fit stuff under the eves or tarps. I’ve thrown and given away tons of things.
My sister’s area flooded really bad.
I like how you wove the description into your dream.
Miles is so cute with eyebrows.
We had a freaky wind storm a last month that blew down trees-our power was out for over 12 hours, so I was like you thinking about it being gone. We have a well, too, so no power no water. Funny the things you think about.
Of course we are always the super hero in our dreams. Isn’t that why they are dreams:)
I went to the Grand Canyon during a hail storm. YAY! in August. YAY!!!
I know what you mean about people. Who cares about famous or regular or mistakes or whtever?! We can’t be perfect or we’d be bored to naps all day long.
This has some scary parts and peace at the end. Love it.
I know just what you mean, Vanessa, about the mundane things. It’s why I read blogs. I love to hear about the mundane. It gives me comfort too.
In the hot of the summer my little pumpkin patch is growing orange glowing gems. I will be moving in about three weeks and will sooo miss my garden. It’s my happy place. Where our toes sink into wet earth and my kids look like strange mud babies dancing in the sun. We had one Giant Grey stripe emerge from the corner of the garden. Her heavy head now droops in the moonlight.I think I will enlarge my garden pics and hang them on the new walls of the house. I’ll some how recreate my happy place.
I really really really wish we could be neighbors.
I see your Lady Grey tea there…I have been having that kind myself the last few days.
I have been pouring it over ice and adding some Vanilla Almond milk. Wonderful in this hot Texas heat!
I loooove Lady Grey. I cant have it too often since i seem to have
an allergy to caffeine, ridiculous i know. But it is my fave choice, that
and Earl Grey….

Because of the weight of a metal flexi hose and shower head that go into the bath body, these are clumsy and difficult to use. Sliding a 1 to 1.5 metre metal hose into the hole in the bath is difficult and clumsy.
