I am sorry I am so late. I went down a winding road to visit my parents with Mister Lovee, and was in a magical (yet frozen) luminaria village of lights this weekend. I will share some luminaria night photos, later this week.
I also found myself playing a bit too long in the gypsy wagon today, and sitting around making dried flower garlands (plus Mister needed me to do some graphic-art work for him)…
As promised, today marks the gypsy garden tour. So, come on in and let's rock the casbah…
October 2008 marks the date that I created our outdoor gypsy-ish living space, details in this blog post here with lots of photos. We almost never get rain, so it seemed a perfect idea, and we loved it so much we decided to keep it alive all the time…
I highly recommend doing a little outdoor living. It is so much fun, so magical and freeing.
As you might recall, as spring of 2009 rolled around, I was ever eager to soak in a gypsy garden bath, and so, with a little bit of insanity motivating me, I did. Much to my Mother's (what is the right word) dismay? I reassured her that, rabbits and pups don't care about crazy girls bathing in the garden, and no one else could see me 😉
There are lots of photos of those adventures right here…
I am able to get hot water too, which makes things extra fun out there under the trees. The gypsy garden happens to be in my front yard, but we are on a large property surrounded by trees and shrubs, plus I put up giant tablecloths as my gypsy garden walls, so no one can see me (everyone here is on acreage so your neighbors aren't too terribly close and are scarce anyways)…
I especially love the garden by night, with the chimenea burning bright. Some of those images shared here…
Spending time outside has been crucial to my well being. Remember when we were kids and we loved to play outside, and it invigorated our souls to run around with our friends and be out until our Mothers had to holler at us 500 times to come inside? I sort of feel like that when I am out in the gypsy garden. The fresh air brings magic…
The first weekend I came to the country house (10 years ago), I felt attached to it. Like a piece of me, of my body map puzzle, clicked into place. A missing void was filled. I never take for granted, how lucky I am to share this spot with Mister Lovee. My humble soul is ever so thankful. And, it's funny, our property is very simple & humble itself, but that makes me love it even more…
There is a post with shots of the Gypsy garden that gives perspective to how it is situated, right over here.
Some of my favorite moments are having friends over to sit and play music in the garden. Our main outdoor fun all happens in the front garden. I have to say, you don't need anything but random scraps of fabric and twinkling lights to start your own gypsy garden or tent, even if it is in your living room 😉
The fun thing is that, visitors like the gypsy boys (who visited in this post), get into the whole gypsy mode too. I am certain you can conjure that sort of magic up with your family or friends as well, if you feel like you need a little gypsy fun. It transports you to a super wonderful place. It's like playtime for adult-children.
The thing that I have to pinch myself about all the time, is that I have a Mister in my life who listens to what I like. And, he quite likes almost all of the things that I do. So it makes things really easy and light -hearted. That's how the gypsy wagon came to be, Mister thought it would be fun to get rid of me a couple hours a day, by giving me a play house on wheels ;)
It worked. In August him and a little old guy (the seller) surprised me with a little wagon that had much potential. That story is in this post over here…
(finally a place to put all those suitcases I have collected ;) How about a road trip??
I spent some sweltering nights in that wagon, being drenched in moonbeam glow, this summer….
One night, I decided to just decorate the inside of the wagon with whatever I had. You can read that post right here. Mister joined me and played some tunes, and before you knew it, just 20 steps from the gypsy garden, we could sit in an enclosed gypsy wagon and have a blast…
And then of course, lots of you lovelies played with me this October for Spells and Magic and even a video I made in this post…
(the labels below can still be found in my shop)
Wasn't that so much fun? I loved those nights, filled with spookiness and enchantment!
And now, here we are today. And I am ever delighted you decided to stop in…

I had a lovely day, riding my vintage Schwinn around and collecting garden treasures to make nature love garlands. I also used some dried flowers I already had…
It makes me want to put up a nature treasure tree for the holidays.
Oh, are you going to stay on for tea? I sure hope so, come on in. You can see my gallery from here, and you can see my two huge kilns in front of the gallery, under the stars. They are covered with tarps, but you can still tell there are two huge monsters there 😉
As you can see (from the garments hanging in the tree above), I have been rather naughty, collecting Antique Victorian frocks to make up for my missing one.
– Lined up like this, the frocks make me want to drift into a story about 3 gypsy sisters who might live here in some sort of story world, traveling in the wagon… Any ideas?
Let's discuss this over that promised tea…
Would you like the cute cup? Okay, if you insist, here you go…
Oh, I think someone has just joined us. Looks like a pirate is sneaking in ;) Is that your beau? I didn't invite him…
It's so cozy in here, I am so glad you joined me for tea ;)
Let's get dressed up and have a real big gypsy party, wouldn't that be fun??? I have this antique wedding gown from lands far away that I could wear. A dear friend gave it to me 2 years ago, as she thought I would be the only person she knew who would appreciate it. Swwwwwwwoooon!
I keep it in an air tight box, but pulled it out for our little visit today. Although, the thought of a gypsy party has my brain wheels turning!!!
Thinking thinking…
I have to go now, because my brain is getting out of control with party ideas (and I have to go hug my furry babies). Also, I have to go wash my hair, since starting in 9 minutes, marks my Birthday week. Yes, I take a whole week to celebrate being dropped to the earth from my cherubim bliss in the sky, don't you? Oh wait, isn't that where I met you? Yes yes, I knew you were familiar ;)
Anywho, I am going to be 34 on Friday. Which is beyond exciting because one of my favorite numbers is 7. And as you know, you get to act the age that your double digits add up to. I get to be 7 for a whole year, YAY! Annnnd, you get to have as many items as you want dealing with your birthday number. But you have to really believe this one, to make it come true.
So, this year I am getting, 34 gumballs, 34 shoes, (not pairs, but just shoes), which will add up to 17 pairs. 34 slices of cake, and 34 kissessss!!
In my world age is meaningless. The only thing it's good for is for assigning a number to the aforementioned treats 😉
How many do you get this year??? Aren't you excited? Just beware of what you ask for. You don't want 34 boyfriends, or 34 spins on the tilt-a-whirl. Or 45 or 56 or 62 or 23 or 87. Trust me. I know these things. 😉
See you ever so sooooooon! It is party week which means, treats for you toooooo 😉
🖤 ,V

pss: Have you seen the old film, An American in Paris? The design style in the opening shots of the characters' apartments is so fabulous! And in many ways, so now, regarding what we are seeing in design.

Sigh. How wonderful. Me thinks I need some twinkling lights and soft sheets.
What a fun little getaway that was. I so enjoyed seeing your outdoor space. You have so much to be grateful for. So many wonderful spaces that are full of wonderful treasures that live together in harmony! Fantastic! I’m 43 right now and 7 is my favorite number. My birthday is in February (and I usually celebrate the whole month 🙂 and then I’ll be 44. Wishing you days of merriment and a week of celebration. Blessings, Tammy
hello my little sweet pea,
i have enjoyed taking a peek into your world, although i have been following for so long i feel i am familiar with this last post…a birthday week is such a lovely idea…enjoy each glorious day!
smooches rosey
I love your outside space…
I remember when I first saw the post you did about
your bath outside…
I think I was on the same page as your mother.
However I could not help but think on what a joy that would be,
delightful freedom.
Thank you for sharing your space both inside and out. It was fun to take a peek.
How beautiful this space is! I could live in there all the time and be quite content.
By the way, have a LOVELY birthday week. I hope that it is everything that you’ve wished for. 🙂
Theresa
I was in a hub bub of activity this morning until I sat down and read your post. I feel like I enter another world when I gaze on your photos! And I am love your birthday happiness. Have a wonderful week and enjoy everything whimsical thing you can find to do. Maybe you can help me with my birthday next month (my attitude I mean) ….I’ve started to worry that it won’t be special and I will be 6 0 ….eeeee! I am trying to change my thoughts and not be overwhelmed with the number. Thanks for helping with your fun post!
HAPPY, HAPPY almost your Birthday Miss Loverrly! : ) I had such a fabulous old time wandering about the magical confines of your luminous and mysterious gypsy garden! It’s beautiful beyond all words and measure, I’m sure! 🙂 I think Titania would feel quite at home there, nestled in amongst all the elegant draperies and pillows!! Yes, indeedy!
🙂
Miss Vanessa, if I had that adorable gypsy garden I would never leave! It is so magical. I love it! happy Birthday week!

I sooo love your gypsy space. If I had gypsy wagon I would NEVER come out 🙂
Oh and how exciting will this week be for you?? 34 years young…I love it. I’m doing the birthday dance now…a little early but oh well. Can’t wait to see what you have in store this week 🙂
How fun it was to spend a bit of time outside…it’s trying to snow up here you know, and going outside right now is a very chilly endeavor indeed…and wet. But beautiful…all the trees and plants are loving it! I am so very happy you’ve been able to find some suitable frocks as well…it is so very important. I was rummaging around in my vintage tie collection last week to top off an outfit, and pulled out two of the most lovely vintage pieces of lingerie and was just delighted! It was a wonderful surprise indeed…I love it when I stash things away like that!
Oh my gosh V, I want to be your best friend and be invited over. Especially to the Gypsy garden and wagon. You must live an incredibly romantic life. I can just imagine it and live vicariously through you and your Mister. Wonderful post… thanks for letting me peek in. ~Jaime
Thank you for the lovely tour, Vanessa! Enjoy your birthday week! I agree it’s just a number. I certainly do not feel my numbered age!
Oh Happy Happy Birthday Week, Devine Ms. V! I shall need to return to take in all of these beautiful photos, for they are all so stunning my head is bobbling and me can’t thinks! However, the shot of the Gypsy Garden in the night with the moon shining down is fabulously stunning. Hubby also sends birthday week wishes for our little New Age Hippie. Oh the joy you spread!!! You are a delight. **blows grateful thankful kisses** Deb
It’s always fun to see your gypsy garden and dream of having my own. It’s not very practical up here in Washington, so maybe I will take your suggestion for one in my living room! That is until we find our own gypsy wagon….so JealouS!
Here’s to the beginning of a fabulous birthday week for you!!!!!!!
V
I just KNEW we were creative sisters in some fashion! You will be 34 on the 11th and I’ll be 44 on the 17th. I’m your OLDER sister but in some ways you are so far ahead of me. But this next year you’ll be 7 and I’ll be 8. What fun! I love the idea of getting 44…what? What would I want 44 of? Oh, I’ll have to think on that one…
I also take a whole week to celebrate my birthday. I’ve just started doing that the past few years. I’m having a crafty poker night as part of my celebration. A few friends, food, drinks and games of poker where the wagers are paid in craft supplies! It’ll be great fun. I wish you could come. BTW, I have NO IDEA how to play! 🙂
I can’t tell you how much I enjoy reading your blog. Your posts make me remember that wildly imaginative child I once was…seems so long ago. Real life came in and stole almost all of that away from me I am sad to say. But the past few years I’ve been fighting to take it back for myself. It was MINE after all. 🙂 Your posts always make me smile and remind me to keep working to get my imagination back. Thank you for that.
BTW, I also have a Mister who supports my creative ways. Isn’t is wonderful!?!?
Enjoy your birthday week. I’ll be thinking of you… and as yours ends mine will begin. 🙂
V
Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the tour of your fantasy world this past week. I know I know, it is real for you but so dreamlike for me.
I love your gypsy garden and wagon, thanks for sharing, got lots of ideas for my own country yard, we get lots of tropical rain here so I’ll have to figure out roof stuff
Have a happy birthday week, eat lots of goodies
Your fairy friend
Karey
I love it all! the little wagon…oh, and the garden! I’d love me a tubbie under the stars! so naughty….but nice too….
I DID have fun at the Halloween party!
I want to spend my next holiday roaming around in your amazing and creative head!
You are always so magical Vanessa! HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEK, yay. Love your gypsy garden and wagon and all of the magic it brings.
Jamie 🙂
Vanessa:
Having a look inside the gypsy garden was like the very bestest table tent. My mom used to make tents for my friends and me all around the kitchen table. We would collect our prettiest and brightest toys and set them up for a whole day. What fun.
You have a fabulous grown-up version of that. A fantasy world filled with firefly lights and confetti walls. What more could a girl ask for?
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful spaces and Happy Happy Birthday to you. (I just had my birthday on December 3).

Gerushia’s New World
Oh I so love your Gypsy garden and wagon. It’s 10 degrees here in the Denver, Colorado area today, want to trade? LOL, I didn’t think so, I don’t blame you.
Happy Birthday to a fellow Rabbit.
Take Care,
Tracy M.
I love your gypsy space …and the wonderful fabrics that you have outside. How wonderful to have a proper bath outdoors as well. Happy birthday for this week…7 is a great age to be…I’m 8 at the moment haha.xxxx
Hello beautiful soul, and happy birthday week to you! It is my birthday week also, and I will be 7 too! (I’m turning 43). I LOVE your gypsy garden, it makes my heart beat so very fast…I am having a garden soiree on Saturday, and plan to decorate inspired by you. I want to set up a gypsy tent with fairy lights and beautiful fabrics – there will be cushions and instruments and crafts for the children to enjoy…I am making lots of sumptious goodies to eat, and we will party into the night…I am sending you lots of birthday love and hugs x
Pure fabulousness as always! Big inspired, overwhelmed sigh…
xo natalea
Happy birthday!
I also get to act seven this year (18, 1+8=7)! Hooray for that!
Oh how I’d love a gypsy caravan someday…
I’d park it in a wide open field and live there. What a wonderful thing your blog is. It’s takes me to such magnificent places. <3
hello magical you,
I just got home from a weekend up further north in Sweden and my very first HUGE fair and a 3-hour drive in the dark and am sooo tired but had to take a look at your blog and just scroll down, taking in a little bit of your blog post even though I’m too tired to really, truly look because it makes me smile inside 🙂 goodnight
I am rendered speechless when i come to visit your blog….ahhh. breath taking photographs in such a magical world you create!
*****siiiiiighhhh*****
Thank you ever so much for sharing more of your magick! You truly take my mind to a different, amazing place EVERY time I read your blog! I’m in love with your gypsy garden!! ***take care sweet***
You are my kind of woman, celebrating your birthday for a whole week. I’m a big birthday person. I love celebrating my birthday and everyone else.
If I could take you to a special fantasy place it is Electric Ladyland. It’s a place where you can hang out, be free, dance and Jimi Hendrix is the king there. So everything is everything. You can do whatever you wish to do.
I wish I live close by. I would be stopping by all the time with homemade cookies and thinking of outrageous adventures for us.
By your birthday calculation that makes me 4!! 4 is a good number indeed.
I adore your posts… What a fun gypsy wagon… just how I’d decorate it myself.
Next year I plan on getting a gypsy wagon and travel around the US… It’s been a dream of mine for some time… well years and years and years…
Pattee
I’m celebrating your birthday *early* and my SOUL KITCHEN is churning out “Cinnamon-Oatmeal and White Chocolate-Chip & Cranberry Cookies” by the dozen. I’ve added a few extra tsp’s of cinnamon so you can smell them inside your gypsy wagon. They would go lovely with a pot of tea. ‘;)
SO beautiful, and wonderful timing- apparently I get to act 4 for an entire year! Yes, I’ll be 40 two days before Christmas, and I can’t tell you how excited this gypsy girl is-
No “Mom Hair” for me.
Twirly skirts will remain in the closet and be worn and twirled.
My jewelry will jingle and sparkle.
Life is good.
Happy Holidays!
Oh please please please!!! pick me to be a gypsy sister!! I already have a name ;-). Oh and I must apologize for my naughty behavior the last time I was here…I think it’s the dark winter days creeping into my heart that sometimes brings out the ugly ;-/. But if I had a lovely vintage frock to scamper about the desert floor in I believe the ugly would go away ;-). Alas for my city dwelling self…tee hee!!!
Ooh! It’s your birthday? Now that’s something special to celebrate indeed!!! Shall I bake you a chocolate cake with three layers of ganache? I’m sure if it were too sweet that Mister Lovee of yours would help you eat it up.
Well I must run along to visit your other blog, but my time here was filled with the most lovely enchantments…I love the Gypsy Camp!!!!!! It sings to my heart and brings gladness to my toes.
See you in a few.
xoxo Cori
Happy, Happy Birthday on Friday Miss V. My birthday celebrating starts on Sunday and I am going to celebrate for a whole week too!! I’m thinking 25 pairs of shoes would be kind of cool. 50 books would be even better….Hmmm,,, you’ve given me an idea! Now, if only I could transform my backyard into a gypsy settlement by Sunday! It’s freezing cold here this week!
Ooh la la this was fun! (Why did I just say ‘ooh la la?’ hmm…well it was fun to say at least!) I love your take on birthdays. I’m still young enough where I don’t have to fudge on the actual number…some of my dear friends mention to me that when you get to a certain age (usually past 50s) you just cut your birthday age in half and call it good. Hee hee, isn’t that delightfully silly? I am in looooove with your gypsy wagon, I’ve always been in love with all things gypsy but the wagon..oh how I’ve dreamed of traveling the world in a gypsy wagon, selling jewelry to travelers along the way and exploring new lands…hmmmm..perhaps in another life I did?
I hope you have a splendiforously incredible-tastic amazingly plentifully perfect birthday!! (I know some of those aren’t words but they sounded so fun I just had to) And who knows…you might just find yourself discovering new surprises on this birthday! *wink*
xoxoxo
Happy Birthday, Vanessa! You are so delightful; thanks for being so creative and sharing it all with us. I think I shall borrow your birthday week idea for my own next month–the big 53… Does that mean I get 53 of everything? What a concept; I love that. I must tell my Sweetyguy about this… He’ll die laughing! You are quite entertaining and uplifting. May your week be a blessed one full of quirky gypsy dreams and parties. Hugs, Barb
Hi Vanessa, okay?
I loved your blog is very beautiful! I am delighted! Congratulations!
‘ll Add your blog in my blog.
Kisses, Rozani
I just swoon thinking of your magnificent gypsy garden and bathing in the open air. Living out under the sky would be so freeing. For now i will have to live out my dreams in my imagination, but i hope one day to have a wonderful open air magical place! thanks so much for sharing.
Delightful, delightful, delightful. Oh, I just peeked into your other blog…I love vintage too, and I must read on. Oh 34 is just a lovely age, even forty-five is a lovely age. We share the same month Birthday, and I am not surprised. On the ninth I will turn 61 years young. It’s the most curious and curiouser thing, the older I get the younger I get.
Your gypsy garden is so lovely. Wishing you a lovely Tuesday.
Karen
oh how fantastic is your world 🙂 i have a question, what do you use for editing your fab photos?
Claire
Delightful!
And a very happiest of birthdays!
Happy birthday to you!!! Hope your birthday-week will be filled with beauty, parties and other fun stuff. This post is lovely. So Beautiful photos. Love that idea about a gypsy garden. Sadly the weather here will interrupt this to be realized. Have a wonderful birthday-week /linnea-maria
Your world is oo much fun I don’t want to leave! The happiest of birthday wishes to you! I like the way your mind works 🙂 My bday is this month as well & I’ll be 33…hmm 33 cupcakes, 33 sweaters from Anthropology, 33 XoXo’x 🙂
What a DREAM-Y place to spend days…I don’t think I would ever come out of your gypsy garden. I too love nature and the outdoors and spend as much time as I can out in my garden, which is full of whimsy! I wish you the HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS and all the gifts your heart can hold.
You are so young, but seem to me to have an old soul. I have a daughter one year older than you! (Had her at 17) I truly enjoy your fun twists and turns and flights of imagination. Along with being a gypsy, and an old soul, you are also a child at heart too!
Brenda
V, this post had me so mesmerized that I had to come back and see it again. I thought about it all last night… the colors, the mood. This really strikes a chord with me. Would you be willing to share with me where you got that gorgeous cloth that is labled Gypsy 2? I think it is the same one as in Gypsy Land 12a, just with that marvelous glow from firelight. I absolutely love it. I also love the red one with what looks like a fancy gold border. I am ready to re-work my whole house around this post!! eeeeee! -that’s me squealing 😛 ~Jaime
oh dear, I forgot again to wish you the happiest of wishes for your Birthday Week 🙂 ~Jaime
I love that you share your photos like you do. How magical and wonderful that you created such a spot. I’d love to do something like this, but…I don’t. I always stop myself from letting my whimsy reign. I’m glad you don’t. Since I’m too chicken to be authentic, it’s fun to live vicariously through you.
I shall play muse today…
My dear, I think it is high time that you get published as a life style. I think that a few coffee table books are in order that show your fantastic decor, playful musings, parties, holiday fare. etc. I can see at least five different themed books friend on my bookshelves all by my sweet friend Ms. V. So, there you go. A whispering of inspiration to you in order to help you spread your light. ( A bonus could be a music cd in a pocket in the back of your Mister Lovee’s gypsy music for those of us who come February are going to wish we were under the sheers at one of your gypsy parties in the desert.) Just letting you know that once I see it, it usually happens. No just kidding, but, really if Rachel Ashwell can, so can you my artsy fartsy! Well, the kids will be home school and we are in for a big snow storm here in Wisconsin! Bundles of logs ready to burn in the fire are waiting their arrival with cocoa to warm their little mitts. Blessings and light sweetie!
I love it all! The Gypsy Bath is probably one of my favorite things.
I am in the midst of a blizzard and I sure could use some tea right now. I could also use your Gypsy Garden for a refuge. It is so cold right now. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! Where did my sun go? Where is the light? Oh I see! You have it at your place. And such wonderful colors too! Love the victorian frocks. It appears the girls have taken flight again without their clothes. They do that from time to time. Return they will, all aglow from their wanderings! Moon dust will do that sometimes.
Hugging you
SueAnn
How lovely to get to wander through your Gypsy Garden! Makes me want to go and dream about fairies and sweets!
Love,
LuLu~*xoxo
Your outdoor bath looks divine. I’ve always loved outdoor spaces and to have “rooms” would be so much fun!
Also, wishing you a very happy birthday! I heard that birthdays are nature’s way of telling us to eat more cake. 😉
THanks for sharing your magical world with us, dear Vanessa. I loved spending some time in your gypsy garden. It was healing in some way, after a terrible week. So thank you, again. You make wonders happen.
You really are a crazy girl, Vanessa, and I am very lucky to have met you through the web! When I was a young girl, I would tell my sisters that our parents had stolen me from some gipsies and I still say that, when I am grown up (and I already am, believe me!), I will be a gipsy.
Have a nice day!
Beautiful post sweet V!!
I love that you are having a Birthday week celebration~~
My birthday was in Nov. and I decided to have a birthday month!!I speard out all my celebrating~~and treats…..Really fun!
You have a wonderful and special week my dear!!If I lived close I would have already stopped by with some yummy treats to share! and pet that new puppy of yours…

Well now you’ve gone and captured my heart with your outdoor gypsy land, complete with bathtub.
I must agree with muse Courtney – a coffee table book full of you would be an incredible thing.
Happy, happy birthday, beautiful girl! May all your dreams keep coming true! Enjoy every moment in your fun gypsy wagon and outdoor paradise with the charming Mr. Lovee! xoxox
I absolutely love your photos! You managed to capture so much in each photograph….I felt like I was sitting in the picture….ho-hum…..if only I had a beautiful “get away from stress & life place”….lol Thank you for sharing!
Hello Vanessa,
Your outdoorhouse and the gypsy wagon are completely my world. I liked your houses to see, but they are much too white for me, but these two decorated places are the colors that I need…
By the way : I became 7 too this year… 43 actually 🙂
A late birthdaykiss from Belgium
Inge
This is so pretty, you have no idea how much it brightened my dark little day to see your beautiful space. What a wonderful life.
You live in a very beautiful place. Thanks much for the tour. ;0
I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR PICTURES!!!
thank you for sharing these are truly an inspirations!
Ah what a wonderful escape…a Gypsy Garden so close and so magical…so free and inspiring…especially for an aspiring writer such as Mademoiselle Angeline (me). I am fifteen and will be 16 in May 2012…maybe I’ll ask for 16 cupcakes and no one else can help me eat them! Om nom nom! Munch munch munch! You lead such a whimsical life–I will take my lead from you 🙂 Have a magical time!
I am in love, love, love with your magical everything. you are so very creative with your vignettes. Truly Beautiful!! Blessings to you for sharing the life I so long for
Donna
This is my kind of gypsy camp! I’m so inspired….thank you for your brimming creativity. I have alot of the same items in some of your photos, so I feel you’re a sister goddess! Blessings…
Gorgeous! Everything is so open and beautiful! One question though, where did you get the patchwork blanket/quilt?
Arabela,
Thank so much 🙂
The quilt is made up of hundreds of pieces of antique saris, and it comes
from India. A friend brought it back for me. A treasured piece
indeed 😉
