The best thing about spring in the garden is…
It’s still chilly in the evenings.
And you get to share the beginnings of flowers turning up with impromptu guests.
Crocheted shawls come out after dark.
As we chat and laugh and listen to music.
(can you see how humongous those cactus/cacti behind my easel continue to be, far left?)
I whipped up a bunch of treats and drinks.
I bought a big french bread, took out a little of the bread insides and filled it with thinly sliced roast beef from the deli, horseradish cheddar (white), lettuces, tomatoes, sweet onions, mayo and dark mustard.
Then sliced it up.
I filled another tray with roasted bell peppers, jalapenos, artichoke hearts, stuffed olives and mushrooms.
I served some olive oil rosemary bread on the side and chocolate cake bites for dessert.
Oh and a platter of sliced vine ripened tomatoes with sliced mozzarella and avocados drizzled in balsamic.
Yumm.
A little Grey Goose with lime juice, grated lime peel, mint and tonic water.
It’s fun to step out of the box once in a while.
And sample the punch, so to speak.
Even though my head now hurts today, haha!
Pellegrino and lime.
Cheap champagne soaked strawberries from the garden.
No, it isn’t Cristal.
But still…
Sweet and lovely.
Once I was at a wedding, and they were serving champagne, and it was surprisingly good.
I asked and asked and couldn’t find out what it was.
Since normally you get expensive dry champagne that is just awful.
(to me it’s awful, haha)
Finally I found someone who told me it was…
Get this…
Asti Spumante!
Then again, I think it’s not actually/technically champagne?
But more of a sparkling wine?
Whatever the case, it’s good with sweet strawberries.
Just chop up some strawberries, drizzle lightly with sugar if they need it.
Then fill fluted glasses with strawberries and slowly pour champagne over.
The strawberries soak up the champagne a little, yummy!
So delightful.
Running around, setting things up for a little soiree in the garden.
Red and pink love.
Are you so sick of hollyhock shots yet?
I wished the garden was in massive full bloom.
But tufts here and there did the trick.
Green cool strolls and lots of noshing.
I just love evenings as such.
It was a good time for all.
Don’t you just love sitting around a table.
Eating good food, sipping lovely things…
Laughing big belly chuckles.
Talking and just enjoying?
I love times like these.
Happy weekending!!
See you soooon.
I have to go clean my room now.
(I have been attempting this for a week, but then I find something wonderful I had forgotten about and spiral into doing other things)
Do you think some of your childhood flaws stay with you forever?
My room will forever look like…
As my sister says –
Like a drag queen lives in there and is trapped under heaps of hats and shoes and baubles.
🙂
Could be worse I say.
Plus, on several occasions people have thought Vanessa Valencia was a chosen stage name.
Haha!
How silly/hilarious is that?
Love, V
ps: Tori Amos has a new album coming out this month.
Two tracks have been released.
Selkie is soooo beautiful, below.
The more I listen to it, the more I fall in love.
She turned 50 a few months ago, isn’t she amazing?
Makes you realize 50 is quite young.
And the creativity goes on and on.
Age doesn’t matter.
It just doesn’t.
Whoever put caps and constraints on age was a real numbskull.
Why do we even listen to such pure nonsense I ask?
🙂
Such a lovely tune…

Oh Vanessa….
The red and pink lovelies are swoonful! I was always told that red and pink clash and that the only time they were useful together was for Valentine’s Day. I don’t believe a word of it. I love reds and pinks together in the garden. I am forever dreaming of owning a pair of striped red and pink stockings.
What a wonderful time you all had. It has been forever and a day since we’ve had good company. Just looking at your photos gives me a desire to entertain.
And that sandwich that you described sounds delicious (well, except for the onions, of course). My current favorite drink is prosecco. Ohhhhh strawberries soaked in prosecco. Now, I am starving!
Thank you for sharing your evening with us. The photos are beautiful!
xoxo

I never get tired of hollyhocks. You certainly had a wonderful garden party and most delicious treats. I’m sure a grand time was had by all.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Always, Queenie
20, 30 ,40 ,50 … what is in a number? Nothing that matters…
I love your garden, ours is beautiful too with the many coloured roses blooming…
And that was a beautiful song…
My type of soirée!
Thank you for saying ’50 is still young’! It certainly happens before ya know it!!
Ha! I love Asti Spumante, too! I never like the dry brut stuff. I’m loving your garden and flowers… love the jasmine smelling evenings in May…
How lovely, Vanessa! It looks so pretty in your garden. The perfect place to have guests over, enjoy the nice weather and your flowers, as well as that delicious food!
Never tire of hollyhocks. They don’t grow very well in our climate, though I keep trying. They grow mold. They are coming up now, but they are never pretty like yours. I think they need drier climates.
Your meal looked and sounded delicious. A perfect summer evening in the garden.
Laughing at wondering if you name is made up. I like it.
The asti strawbs sound delicious – must try them. You’ve inspired me to clear the debris from our patio and start using it for it’s original intention – party time! Enjoy the rest of this lovely weekend in your fabulous garden – oh, and I could never tire of hollyhocks and the rest of your lovely plants! Chris xx
Hello my favourite magic maker. I’m assuming my invitation to your little soiree got lost in the snail mail! Who could ever get tired of hollyhocks. Here in the UK spring still hasn’t arrived properly and although my wild flower beds are overflowing hollyhocks etc are not ready to brave the weather and open up yet. Still I have that pleasure to look forward to. Luv and Blessings to you and Mr Lovee and the fur babies. Lesley
Oh how beautiful, now that flowers are budding and blooming here, today is the day I can finally can take photos and put up a new post on my blog. Your gardens are bursting with color. I love them all. I especially love your evening gardens. I never tire of seeing your photos.
It is so beautiful!
So beautiful Vanessa! I would have loved to be invited to your garden party! Can’t wait for my Hollyhocks to bloom again now! 🙂
I giggled at the name of your champagne, we have one that I don’t think is available outside of the Canadian liquor store, the LCBO. It’s called Spumante Bambino. It’s about 7 dollars a bottle and is deliciousness~! There’s a berry version called Rosato Bambino I believe and it’s sooo delicious too. We drink it with berries floating and pretend we’re fancy with our 7 dollar sparkling wine!
I have no fear of aging realizing that my youthful looking mother is 50, Tori is 50, and Stevie Nicks is almost 66! Young has nothing to do with a number, and more to do with a state of mind; a youthful energy. So many beautiful women to look up to at every age!
It looks and sounds so wonderful!
I’m hosting our first garden party the weekend after my man comes home, two weeks from now. I am keeping all my fingers crossed that the weather will cooperate. Today is just a little too chilly to be comfortable outside.
Asti Spumante is responsible for many a Swede’s first hangover 🙂
I have to laugh because on my mind is a menu I need to whip up for this coming Saturday night. My youngest daughter is being baptized and everyone is coming to my house after for refreshments. But I have been totally uninspired with my cooking muse on hiatus. And then I read this post and thought, ‘There it is!’ I was already planning a chocolate cake, so it’s perfect! Thanks for the inspiration Vanessa!
Cheers,
Dana
I’ll never tire of your flower/garden pics! =D
Or any pics of yours… they transport me to magical places and I love them all.
I’m glad you had such a lovely & fun sounding evening! There’s nothing better than good food and drink with good people… or your furs. ^_^
One of my favorite things to do is to sit on my porch with my coffee and my cat (who wears a harness & leash for safety…) and enjoy the plants and wildlife and sunshine. I hope you Monday is going well!
XOXO
Annalee
I will never, ever get tired of Tori Amos OR photos of hollyhocks.
I have always loved Tori Amos. I’m so excited to hear that she is coming out with a new album! And that song!!! So beautiful, as Tori always is. Love this! Thank you, Vanessa!
I love Tori Amos so much! And in just two weeks I will see a live show with her in Copenhagenm, I am so excited :). The song you posted is magical..
