A stroll, as we talk about collections & treasures, and maybe a little something for you…

I was thinking about this while strolling through the garden yesterday…

Sacred_5

One thing I find myself doing over and over, is making little collections of things.  Things that bring a smile to my face, things that make me happy, things that define bits of me…

Sacred_7

We all do it, we surround ourselves with things we love…  From little millinery mushrooms, to Marie Antoinetteish slippers, to bell jars bursting with beloved treasures, to something as simple as the seeds we choose to plant in our garden…

Sacred_12

Sacred_2

Some of us collect religious statues, others mermaids or even bright colorful kitsch loves…  The list is endless…  Whatever it may be, we surround ourselves with that which brings us joy…

We go to people’s homes, and we look curiously arround, interested in looking at their treasures.  I am not one to question what people own.  I find it fascinating, and the perfect phrase for this would be, "To each his own…"  And, isn’t that just what makes everyone so interesting? I think, most certainly so…

While thinking of such things & feeling under the weather (last of the vertigo), I have been strolling through the garden often, carrying a funny little basket.  Mr. Lovee brought me treasures in this basket, a couple of weeks ago. So, it has become a beloved little garden treasure holder…  I roam around, picking flowers and herbs…

Sacred_1a

I count my blessings one by one, and tuck them deep inside a little pocket in my heart…  I put in this basket all the things I love, that grow in the garden…  I squeeze the basil and lavender, and hold them up to my nose.  The scent makes me feel peace…  I take a handful of Eucalyptus.  Again, I stop, closing my eyes, to let its healing scent dance around me…

Sacred_19

I fill my basket as I make my way to a very special little place, filled with collections that, as described above, bring me peace.  They make me happy, they are meaningful to me.

It is a place I call, my sanctuary…  A very secret space, dear to my heart…  I think, I will share it with you today…

Sacred_10

I stop for a rest, on our little bench…  It is so warm outside.  You can almost taste the air.  It is warm and humid, you can wear the air like a sweater…

Sacred_29

The clouds are so beautiful…  I look up to see the two big trees meeting, arms and fingers intertwined…

Sacred_13

Making our way to my beloved little sanctuary.  I created this place for myself, about 8 years ago.  It holds things that have meaning to me, that make me feel good…  A place to reflect and feel peaceful…

We are almost there.  Look how much the yard has grown since I showed it to you all manicured last week…

Sacred_27

All the little granite pieces I had perfectly leveled into the ground, have sunk, and risen, and shifted.  And, I love that…

Sacred_23

I sprinkle some of my flowers around…

Sacred_3

To me, it is enchanting here, blissful even…

Sacred_4

You see, that is the thing about collections, and carving out little special places…  It is what matters to us alone.  What brings joy to ones soul…

Sacred_9

Sacred_21

In this space, we have buried little animals that we have found around our yard.  Including a most special area, for a beloved hummingbird…  For some reason our green garden attracts owls and birds and furry creatures, who like to find a place for their last rest…

The one eared bunny, looks upon them, ever so tenderly…

Sacred_8

I love this little special sanctuary I have created for myself to wander to…  However, there are lots of ways to surround ourselves with things we love…  That make us feel good…

Sacred_25

We can do it on a smaller scale.  Clustering treasures in our home, in little nooks and crannies…  Like most of us do…  Turning our bedrooms into our very own sanctuary. A place to dream…  To be cozy and happy after a long day…

Sacred_38

One thing I have always loved to do is make these little treasure boxes…  I usually have them for sale at my jewelry and art shows.  I used to make them a whole lot more than I have in the last year…

Sacred_39

They do not have to be religious…  You can make them to hold anything you want…  A few years ago, I made a bunch of them, custom order for different people.  And, they held things about their kids, or simply fun trinkets…

Even old milagros, or bottle caps and rusty fun things can be useful for decorating a Trinket Treasure Box …

Sacred_34

So, here is where the treat comes in…

Sacred_41

You see, I am going to take a magical velvet sack, and fill it with wonderously fun things, so that…

Sacred_40

You can make your own little treasure box…  The box can be made out of anything, wood, even decoupaged cardboard…  But, what I will do is…

Sacred_33

Fill a velvet pouchling with all kinds of stuff.  Including some felt balls and fun little trinkets and such.  So you can decorate your own treasure box ( I think I will even make the box for you!!)…

Sacred_31

Sacred_36

It was about time we had a fun little giveaway, don’t you think??  You have been sooo nice to me!!  And patient with me while I have been so slow.  It has taken me a little bit longer than I would have liked, to get well.  But, I am feeling better everyday, yay!!

I will have a little drawing Monday night, and see who gets to win the little sack of treasures… I will let you know by Tuesday morning the latest…

Thank you for all your lovely words in my last post.  It means so so so much to me, to have your support in my art endeavors.  The whole thing feels surreal.  I am in the middle of nowhere, playing in a sprinkler, so it feels quite extra surreal.  I look at the magazine, and give myself a pinch 😉

That reminds me… Back to the sprinkler I go!  Oh, it is your turn to skip through!! Go on… 😉

What a lovely post- thank you for sharing your special sanctuary. I know the feeling well- I’ve been working to make my bedroom that place for me- full of things and scents that I love. I have been here for a visit in quite a while. I’ve missed a lot, I think. Time to catch up!

  2. Kandes Lee says:

What a peaceful place you have created. I have treasures scattered throughout my house in no particular fashion. It is probably about time I unearth them and put them in a lovely spot where I can find my own tranquility. You are always such a source for inspiration, for many people. Thanks for being such a light in the world.

  3. Mo'a says:

I am so sorry to hear that you have had a bout of vertigo. I have three friends that have vertigo and know just how awful you have felt.
I bought Art Doll Quarterly and Artful Blogging. I told the check out person that I know you, as I pointed at the photos of your art on the covers…you are my claim to fame 🙂
I love this post…I hear that your area has had unusual amount of rain this year.
I love you special sanctuary. The animals know where they will get love and respect and where they will be remembered.xoxo

so happy to hear that you are feeling better, sometimes a little something (like vertigo) slows us down so we can enjoy a little something else… like a beautiful stroll in your lovely sanctuary. thank you so much for sharing, it’s truly breathtaking.
it’s so true that so many of us have little corners and nooks here and there in our homes for little collections of treasures. I for one have many little corners like that in my home. what i love the most is when i am deep in my own head full of thoughts and i am stopped by one of these magical corners full of special things… all my thoughts slip away and i am in pure enjoyment of a beautiful moment with a magical collection of trinkets and art pieces. i too have a slight (cough*cough) obsession with treasure boxes and little shrines… lately i have been making so many matchbox shrines for this local shop, i am so happy that other enjoy them too!
thanks so much for sharing! and a little velvet pouch of surprise treasures is such a fantastic idea to share!!!

  6. How are you feeling my dear? Hopefully better? I forgot to tell you how sorry I was that you were under the weather earlier.
Just thought I’d inform you of the dead mouse in our trap in the basement and the RAT DROPPINGS BEHIND OUR WASHER! Why me? Curling toes up onto desk.
    HALP!!!!

today I went back to the bookstore to get Artful Blogging (as I have read & re-read Art Doll Quarterly … and already shared it with as many people as I dare) and have been oohing & ahhhing at the pages. your article was dusted with magic. 🙂 AND THEN … such a wonderful post with a beautiful sanctuary – such love – and pictures of precious treasure boxes … AND a chance to possible receive a little black pouch full of delight! Chalk this up as one fine day. 🙂
ps – so happy to know that you are feeling bettererer.

  8. merle says:

Thank you for your lovely reply! I just got back from getting art supplies and got your magazine with your girls on it! I am giddy to look through it tonight! How exciting about this and the Blog magazine!
I think your sanctuary is amazing. I grew up in the country and my best friend was my donkey Rosebud. We used to take walks through the woods all the time, stopping to smell the lily of the valley and to take a dip in the swimming hole(she would go in too!).
I love, love, love your amazing little altars and shrines indoors and out. I do the samething in my house. I call it “playing with blocks” but as a (somewhat) grownup. I do work in museums so my urge to “display and arrange” never tires. Thank you for sharing all this goodness! The world needs it for sure(and I need those turquoise shoes and tights of yours at the top of your blog as I am obsessed with that colour-it is kind of insane but I love it!).
Hopefully I will have new dolls ready soon for El Dia de los Muertos-they will be a surprise!
    Take care,
    merle

And a belated congratulations on the wonderful (and well-deserved) recognition in Art Doll Quarterly–I haven’t even been able to lay my hands on a copy of Artful Blogging yet, and already I have another magazine to add to my “Find” list!

oh my what a lovely post again! I agree, to each his own!
I ran here and there and all over the city and finally found a magazine! It was well worth the hunt, just beautiful! It was lovely to learn more about you and your process… especially as a new friend to your blog. What a gorgeous post, it made me happy and serene. I love that you have a little hummingird buried there, being nice to nature gives back to us ten fold. Today i buried a litte red bird, it just made me sad but i lovingly gave her a little serenade as i gathered her together, I love your little area. I am currently working on mine bit by bit.
Maybe i could send you a pretty little rock from Canada to place in your garden?

I have never been very good at making my space beautiful. I keep it fairly clean and relatively tidy, but I am kind of off in other realms a lot and forget to tootle around my little earth space. thanks for reminding me.

  17. Alexis says:

i told my uncle in texas about the magazine and my aunt was able to find it. since i live in the philippines, my copy’s coming in a box my uncle is sending to us next month. I can’t wait to finally see it! 🙂

  18. Martha says:

I do hope you are feeling much better this morning! I received my copy of “Artful Blogging” yesterday, but arrived home VERY late from a wedding…so was only able to glance at it a bit. It looks wonderful!!

  19. Mel says:

What a darling little sanctuary! I long for such a place… the one in my mind has a roof, though (the sun and I don’t get a long). Maybe a darling gazebo.

I love your sanctuary! It is so pretty and calming to look at. What fun it is to see the world through your eyes and all the beauty you share with all of us who read your blog. Thank you for this. I too am a collector. My sweet oldest daughter says that I like too many things. I don’t think a person can like to many things to be honest with you.
You have inspired me so much with your creativity and lovely writing! It is funny I am always more productive in my crafting once I read a new post from you.
I would love to win the wonderful trinkets you have put in the sack, so I am crossing my fingers and wishing very hard.

I love your sanctuary and those wonderful shots of the glittery sky 🙂
I can never leave your blog without feeling just a tiny bit happier, or a lot happier sometimes.
I must say you are a lucky Sagittarian to have such a garden to walk through. Do you find yourself sometimes trotting around like a little horse or a kid? I do, inside the house! lol
And you must have a big house to keep so many treasures! (love that tree inside the glass!)

  34. Judy says:

I went on a walk to your sanctuary today and saw the most delightful, and the most wonderful bibbles and tillies ! It is not everyday we can see such treasures. I rested on your bench and picked some herbs and flowers, sprinkled them where I sat so you would know I had been there. I said “hello” to the one-eared bunny and told him what a fine job he was doing. I so enjoyed my visit…thank you for inviting me!! Judy

  37. KRiSTa says:

Oh how I would love to have a sanctuary like yours-a place full of color and sprinkled with a bit of nature’s magic..it really is the simple things that we miss most in life-things that we usually just walk past day to day, and then one day we stop..stop to watch the fluttering of a butterfly’s wings and the dew drops on flower petals. There is so much in life to enjoy..thank you for reminding me of that! I am glad you’re feeling better. Being dizzy is such an awful feeling. And how so kind of you to give away some magical gifts..my mind cannot comprehend what enchanted little things lie in wait in that precious velvet bag…now it’s going to just bother me until I know! And congrats on all those art magazine you’re in! So amazing!!! Okay, now I’m just gushing. Have a splendidly serendipitous day!

  39. Sonya says:

  60. It’s lovely to have spaces in and around your home you can go to for moments of pure serenity. I love all your little touches that made it your own. I can see why the various creatures make it their final resting place.
I like to create vignettes IN my home and change them often. Sometimes even having those can create a little sanctuary feeling.
One day I hope the outside is done so I can have various places to evoke different feelings. A little bench, a special tree or flowers.
You are indeed fortunate to have all that space to sprinkle your magic on.
I hope you’re feeling close to 100% better.

Well I do have to say that when we are looking for gifted children in school, one of the things we look for are children who have collections. I look to talk to children who have a hodge podge of items to see what the items in their collection have to do with each other.
