Autumn Light

It's funny, but every year about this time, I start to notice the most intensely golden light shining through my windows at early sunset…

Autumn light 5

Today, the amber light was exceptionally lovely.

It forced me to stop everything I was doing…

Autumn light 6

I have been thinking that this is a very odd week.  And then as confirmation, everyone I have spoken to has been telling me what an odd week they are having.

So, I decided to stop all my projects and get ready for Autumn (is the 23rd of Sept. the first day?).  The light was confirmation, that I had made the correct decision…

I took out a rug I had ordered from Anthropologie last year.  I have been so anxious to try it out, and am very pleased…

Autumn light 1

I have had this rug tucked away for so long, just waiting for a hint of Autumn.  It changed things in the room very much, and creates quite a different ambiance compared to my lighter color rug (which you can see here).  I love both looks, and they offer just the right amount of change, for a gal who doesn't like change.

On a different note – some of the most enchanting things I found when I first moved to the country years ago, were some of Mister's treasures (beautiful frames and art work).  As well as treasures, left ages ago, by the previous owners (wonderful old windows and a handful of other delicious items).

However, there was an original oil painting belonging to Mister Lovee, that I claimed possession of early on.  Mister acquired it from his father, who was an art dealer.  I love floral paintings, and this one stole my heart from the second I saw it.

Autumn light 8

Until today, I never had a place to hang it (although I keep it with me, leaning here or there).

I am so happy to finally get to hang it on my wall…

Autumn light 4

I think I can handle this change, as it feels really cozy.  (I inherited all of my Grandma's crocheted items, including the tablecloth you see in the photo above.  Her and my great-grandmother made it.  My Grandma is still alive, and I just adore her)

So you see, a little gold light, and I am autumn inspired.  Throw in some cooked pumpkin, drenched in my own sugar and spice concoction, and the aroma of autumn truly is in the air…

Autumn light 3

I took a saucepan, and plopped in butter, a handful of brown sugar, 4 large chopped dates, a handful of raisins, some nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, a pinch of salt and a pinch of ground cloves.  Then I drizzled in a slurp of apple juice (you can also use fresh squeezed orange juice) to dissolve the sugar.  Prepare to faint with the first taste.

I tell you, I have so much to do, and so many projects I am working on, that I really needed this day to be in my space, without pushing pushing pushing forward.  I have not slept in all summer, what with my garden duties, and oodles of chores, it just wasn't possible.  My feet have ached at the end of everyday from my busy-ness.  So, maybe I will take tomorrow to catch up on things, and maybe, just maybe, I will sleep in.

The peek of autumn light commands me to be delightfully wicked ;), and stray from my duties for a day….

Autumn light 2

See you, ever so soon!!

Today's Randoms

1)  I love oatmeal.  But not too sweet.

2)  I love shoes, not just for wearing, but for looking at.

3)  I love tidying up my house and just being in my space.  Dusting, doing laundry, listening to music, cooking…

4)  I had the sounds of Erik Satie, drifting in and out of my mind, all day…

  1. Vanessa, your new rug is gorgeous! I love it in your room…isn’t it funny that you are preparing for Autumn, and here in Australia, we are waking from a cold, cold winter with the promise of Spring and new beginnings…those first 2 photos of the light coming through your window are pure magic. Sending you hugs from across the ocean x

  2. McKayla says:

Ohhhhh goooodness. This week is such an odd week for me tooooo! Must be an autumny change in the air, maybe?

  3. robin says:

I love that tune. It was used in the movie The Painted Veil, which was awesome. Loved your post today. Yay, Autumn light! 🖤, Robin

  4. The new rug is lovely! Funny, I was just looking at rugs on Anthropologie last night. Where did you get the darker round rug?
The pumpkin looks delish. I have been craving pumpkin muffins with whipped cream cheese frosting but pumpkins are not quite in season up here yet and for some reason there is not a can of pumpkin anywhere, there is a shortage for some reason….I’m sure the wait for the fresh pumpkin will be worthwhile.

  5. Tara G says:

Autumn is definitely here. It’s gotten cooler. I think. The monsoons have ceased to be.
I have had some success in the garden. Although not as much as I am used to.
Do you get Bitter Gourd there? No? Maybe?
It looks like a dinosaur. I’m serious. That’s what’s growing. You cannot eat it… raw. I can’t even eat it cooked. It is the most bitter kind of bitter I have ever tasted.
However, here in India… it is well known for bringing down blood sugar. A miracle cure for Diabetes.. It does work wonders. It needs to be juiced though.
unless one is suffering already…. there is absolutely NO need to ever taste this… lol
google it! It does look like a dinosaur!!!

  6. Anna says:

Your new rug is beautiful and sooo YOU! I’d love that in a bag. A carpet bag! I also love Autumn light. I start to notice it around the third week of August. I see the way it bathes the trees and rooftops in an ever so subtle golden glow and I always make a point of letting everyone know that I see it. And I don’t understand why they don’t (except for my son) which makes them think I’m just so odd which I’m quite happy to be! Enjoy your lovely odd week.

  7. Miss Lori says:

Such a lovely rug! I was shopping in a discount store with my daughters last week, and stumbled (literally, it was laying on the floor rolled up)upon a beautiful plush 8 ft round rug in gorgeous fall colors. There were no tags, so when I asked the cashier, she said “Large rugs sell for $40.00” I said, “I’ll take it!”
I had a little trouble getting it into my Toyota Camry, we had to fold it but we managed. I think it was the best find I’ve had in weeks. Right now it is in my living room, and everyone has been sitting in the floor, it is so soft.
What is it about rugs that has me “hooked”? (giggle)

  8. i LOVE your space no matter which rug is on the floor. simple as that!
    xx

  9. Linda Diane says:

Your sleeping nook looks so inviting with all the beauty around it. It’s interesting you talk about light. As autumn approaches and I am outside, I start to notice that the light just looks different to me.
Enjoy that pretty new rug AND sleeping in!

  10. So very pretty, Vanessa! I felt that first touch of autumn this morning. I have had my Fall/Winter dining room curtains sitting on a chair for a few days now waiting for that “touch” and now this weekend they will go back up, and the linen and light sheers will come down. I have also dragged a few things up from the basement storage and will have to get the rest to get some Fall decor around the place. Wondering if I should hold off on the Halloween for the month of September {I have those great labels that I bought from your shop last year and dressed up some plain jars and glassware with}. Yes, I think I’ll wait until October 1st for the Halloween stuff and just enjoy the Fall weather first.

  11. Renee says:

Your new rug and the painting are beautiful.
I’ve been “feeling fall” here too. Oh course the air conditioner is still running because I do live in Georgia.
I was up early this am getting my granddaughter ready for school and looked out the kitchen window to see the most beautiful sunrise. So grabbed my camera and tried to capture the beauty of the moment.

  12. Oh what a gorgeous rug and painting. I am quite smitten with them both and they look great in your room.
Yippee, Autumn is on it’s way!!!!!
    Take Care,
    Tracy M.

  13. Kylee says:

    V~
I loooove this post. I will miss summer but am looking forward to the Fall. Your anthropologie rug is fantastic and really brings a new feeling of warmth to your room as well as Mr. Lovee’s floral artwork. LOVE IT!!!

  14. faerwillow says:

~to the golden amber glow of the coming season…i l🖤ve and adore when this time comes…for me our summers never bring forth such light only in the autumn does the sky change into brilliant sunrises that fill my morning with such a calming peace…warmth…change is hard for me as well but yours was ever so subtle to give such a comfy cozy feel to your room…to embracing the season upon us…much l🖤ve and light upon you and yours~

  15. Deborah says:

Oh I Love! That rug is perfection. It would fit in my home splendidly. I have a strange penchant for rose prints mixed with animal prints. Does that make me wildly romantic? I think yes!!! OOooo I felt the change too…this morning on my walk it was 68 degrees! Needless to say, I took power walking up a notch. You are my Joy, oh little one. **blows kisses** Deb

  16. Laura says:

I’ve been watching the new autumn sunsets and sunrises with such joy! I am in love with colder weather and am anxiously awaiting the first really fall day! I love when you show us photos of your home. You have such a beautiful and amazing style! 🙂
    enjoy your day!

ps…according to my calendar the official start of fall is at 11:09pm (EDT) on 22 sept, with the full moon (a wishing moon) on the 23rd at 5:18am (EDT) 🙂

  17. Candace says:

Love that Mister Lovee painting. Goes superduper with everything. I am ready for Autumn like you wouldn’t believe and seeing your post and lovely photos simply speeds up the process…
It’s only 85 here today. Chilly compared to just a couple of weeks ago!
From The Classic City, love calls you by your name… and so do the pumpkins!
    Candace, Still in Athens.

  18. Oh! I love that painting and I love your new rug too. Very, very pretty room!

  19. Marilyn says:

Love your new rug. I like that you have different rugs for different seasons. I have wanted to do that and put slip covers over the furniture to change the season. Your room is beautiful and so cozy. The painting and crochet tablecloth are wonderful.

  20. That is a beautiful painting and that rug…oh my! I am hoping to sneak by Anthropologie super soon…I have some gift cards from my birthday that I am itching to spend 🙂 I NEED clothes, but there are so many goodies for the kitchen that I want from there, I think that’s where it will end up. I love autumn and today it’s sunny and breezy here…so we have all the windows open and it’s just lovely! Happy relaxing day to you my dear friend.
    Jamie 🙂

  21. The tablecloth is so pretty!
I am a little, little bit jealous that you like to tidy up your home – to me it’s more of a necessary evil. I mean, I want it to be clean of course and pretty and cozy, but I don’t really like the process :-S

  22. THe rug is perfect with the painting. What a great treasure….I wouldn’t have pegged that as being Lovee’s.

  23. Cookie-Fee says:

what a wonderful post 🙂 autumn is by all means my favorite season and you´ve captured it so well 🙂 thank you…
oh, and I can really smell your spiced pumpkin 🙂
    have the most beautiful day

  24. Bohemian says:

I just moved into my Autumn Groove too only yesterday… the Grandkids and I dragged out all the Autumn decor and now that I’m surrounded by the look and feel of Fall’s arrival at the ole Homestead, in spite of the 100+ degree weather *wink… we live in AZ too*, we’ve finally got an Autumn Vibe going on! *contented sigh* I’m going to have to try out your Sugar and Spice concoction now … with Spiced Tea and spicy scented candles burning, some cooked Pumpkin drizzled with that fab concoction should put me in Autumn Nirvana!!!
    Dawn… The Bohemian

  25. Autumn seems to be here early this year…
It was 67 degrees yesterday evening, something just unheard of for central California. It is delicious outside right now at 2:45 P.M. It is 80 degrees compared to the 106 degree of last week.
Your rug is to die for! I love the light coming in your window…the light in my window just before sunset yesterday was ethereal flowing through my kitchen windows where the light was caught by a stain-glassed sun catcher. Yup! It looks like Autumn is here, although, we have had a turn-around in weather right at the last moment and had an Indian Summer on into October where is can still get pretty hot.
So, I am crossing my fingers that it continues to stay cool.
The floral painting is exquisite, and you found the perfect place to hang it.
Well, I’ve been on the computer too long today…must get some housework done.
hugs and fairy kisses blowing your way,
    Miss Teresa

  26. There is something magical about the low autumn light and I LOVE photos with light bursts in them. 🙂
The painting and rug look lovely together!
And since you are always showing us music, might I share a favorite with you?
Emma Wallace calls herself a modern ragtime singer/songwriter. Someone has put together a lovely video with one of her songs.

  27. Lisa says:

just beautiful! I love your space! I know what you mean about the autumn light. It’s a magical time of day, isn’t it?? You’ve inspired me to spice up my house as well!!
    have a great night

  28. Kelly Jeanette says:

Was just lurking today but just had to say how beautiful t=your photos are. Here in TN the farmer’s market is now showing off pumkins and mums and the sky is starting to get that lovely clear blue color only seen in Autumn.
    I love your blog.

  29. Theresa says:

Hello dear Vanessa! Autumn magic is definitely making her way here…I FEEL it. It has been deliciously cool here in CT this week – and the nights have been decadently cool. I can SMELL crispness in the air. It is so nice to have the screen doors open and hear the nighttime bugs singing their songs, with pups lying at my feet and hubby by my side. And I saw PUMPKINS at the grocery store today. This means that I shall soon be able to get them at my local orchard.
I would be so at home in your gorgeous room – what lovely filtered light. It would be fun to knit and chat and snack on cakes and sip tea.
    Happy early Autumn!
    xoxo Theresa 🙂

  30. Rhonda Roo says:

That’s a cool rug-who wouldn’t want to feel the softness of a giant rose without thorns under toes? 🙂
OK, wellllll…..it’s like 98 here. 🙂 BUT. HOWEVER> I have been seeing the fall in the treetops, I keep telling the Lost Boys and Cowboy, I see it-the leaves are shrinking and today on the way home I saw a tree starting to change colors and it wasn’t dead! WOOHOOOO.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the light in autumn. If I painted this would be when I would be most inspired, I think…
    Fave quotes of autumn:
“Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.”
    – George Eliot
    and
“A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air.”
    – Eric Sloane
and one more (it’s my 3 random things you see)
“Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.”
    – Stanley Horowitz

  31. Jaime says:

your space is so cozy and inviting. my mother had a floral 3 piece screen that is just beautiful and reminds me of your painting there. You would love it.

  32. Sharleen Parker says:

Another lovely post, that makes me feel like I could almost reach out and caress the treasures you tease me with…LOL! Makes me want to start redecorating.. I didn’t want summer to end this year, they go by more swiftly with every passing one… but alas, they always do end, and I look out and see the changing days, and the autumn light gives me a tingly feeling of excitement and perhaps a bit of meloncholy. I love that golden glow when it’s about to fade to twilight, and then the sky turns silver blue…but we have had so much rain, the light is rather elusive. It would be so much fun to have the sunny autumn days of my childhood, but I will take what I can get. I cheer myself by warming my home with smells of baking or music that reaches into my soul, and dream of what will be soon…
Vanessa, I do believe you have some Spanish blood, so I have to ask, have you listened to Luis Miguel’s rendition of Noche de Ronde or some of his other hauntingly lovely melodies? I think some are so perfect for this time of year..
Thank you again for sharing your beautiful art and talent..
    Abrazos desde Seattle,
    Sharleen

  33. Carl V. says:

Isn’t it such an underappreciated pleasure, being in one’s space? I know after our recent big basement clean I am enjoying so much taking a moment here or there to make my way down there to soak in what we’ve accomplished and to just relax.
Your pictures of the changing light are so representative of the way I feel this time of year. I love this season of change, as the world (my part of it anyway) gets ready to settle down to rest. It makes me want to slow down, to appreciate the time more and to just “be” more, if that makes any sense. I love this last part of the year so much that I want to treasure every moment of every day and not let it slip away.
Very cool painting and your room, with the painting and rug and pumpkins looks very inviting and cozy.

  34. marjorie says:

I’ve been in such an Autumnal mood as of late, as well….and your magical lights here have only beckoned me farther along the path of fallen leaves and pumpkins! Such bliss! And just look at your squash babies all lined up in a pretty row upon the table! You should be ever so proud!! 🙂
    p.s.
last night we made dark chocolate turtles……and I felt like it was Halloween and Christmas all at once!! 🙂
    tee hee!!!

  35. Jill James says:

thought of you when I bought 20/$1.00 flower seed packets yesterday to plant a sunflower house with a blue morning glory roof!

  36. Just another comment about your link to the Youtube for Eric Satie…I love Debussy and now I wonder which pianist influenced the other? Their styles are similar. I also love Chopin who lived from 1810 to 1849. It seems that all of these wonderful artists, and authors were so young when they died. Pity…Edgar Allan Poe, Mozart, these brilliant souls…died young…they must have had hard lives to live. It makes me thankful for where I live and the time frame I am living in.
    Just some thoughts…
    Have a lovely, inspirational weekend!
    Cheers!
    Miss Teresa

  37. Rosalyn-Sue says:

  40. Goddess knows what I’m doing awake at 5:30 in the morning but I was directed here and ever-so rewarded as always. Love that last photo…so pretty!
