A Little Spooky Pre-Party Family Folklore…

You may or may not have read, the tales I have shared over the years, about my grandparent's tattered lil' enchanted home, complete with double attic and tiny passageways?  Or ghostly apparitions, and curious collections up rickety stairs?  It is a home that sits high high high upon a hill, on a cliff.  To get to their home, you must make the descent down what seems like a hundred stairs.

Witches 4

There are stairs everywhere.

Stairs to get to down to their house, which halfway down, turn into two sets of stairs. One going straight ahead, and another more gracefully swooping to the right, leading you to a path that will curve you to the front yard.

Witches 5

Once your arrive at the house, you can go inside.  Or, you can peer over the wall…

Witches 1

And see the family's abandoned playground, and below that a long drop down the cliff, to a stream.  Where my Mom and her siblings and cousins used to play, although it was forbidden.

Witches 2

At one time, when my Mom was little, all of the houses on this cliff were mostly occupied by her family.  Great-grandparents and aunts and uncles and so many cousins, I can't even begin to name them.  Plus her siblings, which were 6.

Children in the woodshed

And of course, wouldn't ya know, the family had witches.

My mom's great-aunts.

You can imagine the stories I heard growing up.  My grandma is a storyteller beyond words.  A fascinating beautiful woman, who would tell tales that gave me chills until, well, now.

Maybe this added to my imagination?  I don't know?  But what I do know is that, I can spook the bloomers off of myself if I simply recall the endless tales told, under the stars…

Of course, any child's imagination would run wild, if when they visited the family playground, down even more garden stairs, at the edge of the cliff…

Witches 10

They were greeted by the real witches cottage.

Witches 11

My ideas and the places I dream up, are very real to me.  When I was a child I was constantly told tales, fairy tales and spooky tales, that were followed up with proof…

Which made me a believer of everything fanciful, fantastical and otherworldly, early on.

Witches 7

We were always forbidden to go in or near the witches house…

Witches 16

I can't help but visit it, every time I go to see my grandparents.  When I am there, I can feel swirls of cool air surround me.  I feel like someone touches my ear, and slowly tugs at my hair…

Witches 15

The witches were very jealous of my grandmother, and did mean things to her.  She was, and is, so lovely.  They even gave her an eye-drop tincture when she was young, telling her it would make her eyes sparkle, which of course, did no such thing.  Instead, it caused her to lose her eyesight for some time.

I could tell you tales upon tales….

Maybe someday I will.

But for now I will tell you this.  It is at this time of the year, as autumn envelops us, that I remember crunching through leaves, to get a peek into the witches cottage… Thinking I could really see them…

Over the years, the cottage has crumbled, I can't even see the fireplace through the rubble.  And I wonder…

Witches 14

What treasures lie beneath?

Witches 12

My grandfather asked me if I wanted him to pull out what he could?  But I said, No no, it is too dangerous…

Witches 13

Plus, secretly, I wouldn't want to upset any witches, would you???

Between you and me, I think they still roam the place…

I will tell you this…

As a girl, I would swing on my stomach, and look at the cottage doorway, having to rub my eyes in disbelief at what I saw.

For, somewhere in the darkness, I was certain I could see a bone chilling apparition.

My cousin saw it too.

Often.

And maybe, just maybe, you can see her as well, in the doorway, in the darkness, while you swing, swing swing, on a squeaky old swing, as the leaves rustle, and your little arm hairs stand on end…

Yes, just maybe, you can see her too….

Witches 8

We would run up the stairs, and slam the little gate… Heaving, and breathing with vast fear, and we were certain we could hear her say…..

We will geeeeeeet yoooooouu….

Witches 9

Granny says that the witches will appear, at this time of the year, to anyone who is willing to open their eyes, and truly see…

Shall we invite them to the party??

I dunno….

You decide.

I have to go prepare though.  A little witch magic would come in handy.  I have not started my party planning yet.  But that is not unlike me.  I like to let the inspiration simmer, and then explode.  I also like to go with the flow.  I don't like to think things and ideas up.  I sort of ask them to come find me….

They best turn up today though, or I will be in big trouble 😉

Party just around the corner…

OH! Cool and spooky nights, and Jack-o-lantern flickers do delight!!

Halloween 32

  2. Kathleen Pappas Doherty says:

I love this tale and all that you share! You have inspired my creativity many times…thank you so much~

  3. I was afraid to scroll down. Hahaha —> I am a ‘fraidy cat when it comes to the supernatural because they *are* real. There are souls who haven’t passed over to the other dimension.

  4. OOOH so much spooky fun, I spied an old foot peddle sewing machine base in there. And the witch, maybe she is just lonely now. You should invite her.
    Take care,
    Tracy M.

  5. Cassandra says:

    Oooooh…how creepy! And wonderful!

  6. Faces in window FREAKED me OUT!
    Or my bloomers off,
or what have you. I do like that you got proof of the tales as a child. Sort of. I’m in two minds about this.

  7. Oh I still have goosebumps and the hair on my arms is standing strait up. I sat there staring at the doorway from the swingset for awhile and just when I thought that she looked back at me, I had to move on quickly. Spooky
I am so excited and my heart is pounding with thrilling haunted wonder at the party to come.
    I can’t wait.
Thank you for this wonderfully spooky tale,
Huh! Oh my goodness! I thought I just felt that breeze across the back of my neck.
    Invite the witches!

  8. Pat says:

I saw the witch! She was cackling and motioning for me to come toward her ~ nope, not gonna do it. Perhaps if you invited her to the party she might be nice to everyone??? The faces in the window are chilling ~ and it’s pretty warm here right now. I did feel a cool breeze around my neck while I was looking at them.
You have so many fabulous tales and it’s exciting to be a part of them. Can’t wait for your party!

  9. Miss Lori says:

~Cackles~ Aha! My pretties! SOON The party begins!

  10. Oh soooo creepy V…it would have spooked the pants off of me as a little girl (and now, but shhh don’t tell anyone 😉 It’s par-tay time…woo hoo!

  13. stacy says:

I love creepy old family ghost stories. I have some doozies…we should sit and trade tales. However, I have NO witches and I’m UTTERLY jealous.

  14. Wendy says:

My grandparents had a really spooky and magickal house too. It wasn’t in the country and so lovely. It was in Beverly Hills and once belonged to the Early Hollywood set and had parties with all the old time actors/actress’. It had this room beneath the stairs which was where one would use the old-fashioned phone. It had a mirror in it and my cousin and I were told that if you looked in it, you could see the ghost of the original owner. I was never that brave. And I think you need to invite the “family witches.” Maybe they were related to the one who cursed Sleeping Beauty because they weren’t invited! Just make sure the white witches place protective spells for all your guests. I am so looking to your party Vanessa!

  16. DogsMom says:

I am not so sure I want these particular witches at the party. They seem like the mischevious types. Invited or not, they may decide to appear.
After your party I am headed out to the woods for another Halloween gathering. Wish it was before, so I could share the pictures, but I will post them a day or 2 later as well.

  17. Betsy Bailey says:

I love this family ghost story. Lovely and a little creepy. I am so excited for the blog party this weekend. I’m planning to wing it too. See you on Saturday!!

  18. Shell says:

I do think we should let the witches come to the party. It would give it an extra magical touch. I so can’t wait for tomorrow.

  19. Deborah says:

What a magical childhood you had! I love your little model. Yes, it is best to leave sleeping witches sleep. Another fantastical tale, my little enchantress. I love what you are doing with your photos. Oh, and I adore you. **kisskiss** Deb

  20. Theresa says:

Oh, I DO say to invite the witches. We wouldn’t want them to cast angry spells for not being part of the festivities, now would we? I enjoyed reading this tale of your family’s folklore – a bit spooky but also a bit interesting, too. Can’t wait until tomorrow (me in a little sing-song voice here). xoxo Theresa

  21. Auntie Bliss says:

    Carolina 🙂

  22. This freaks me out. All over again.
