If I was a Pumpkin Girl

Do you ever dream of a place.  A place so safe, so kind, so easy, so pleasant?  A place where going door to door, selling pumpkins, or baked goods, or handmade wears would be considered lovely commonplace?

Pumpkin girl 1

A place where folks wouldn't tell you to get off of their property.

But rather, welcome you kindly?

Pumpkin girl 11

A place where folks would be glad to see the pumpkin girl every autumn?

Pumpkin girl 2

I think about that sometimes.

How times have changed.

How we have changed.

I know that somewhere out there, there is a safe little village, where such a life exists…

Maybe you live there now?

Pumpkin girl 8

If I was the pumpkin girl, who went door to door selling my pumpkins, I would wear a huge smile after such a long hard summer of tending the beautiful squash babes.

Pumpkin girl 10

I would look forward to little children screaming, "look daddy look, the pumpkin girl, the pumpkin girl!"

Pumpkin girl 5

I would watch them choose their favorite, maybe 2, maybe 3.

I would have pumpkins for carving and pumpkins for baking…

Pumpkin girl 4

And, after all my pumpkins were sold, say after a week of visiting homes in my village…

Pumpkin girl 7

I would ride around in the evening, with a jug of hot cider in my front basket, and Matty in the back.  And we would look at all the different candle glowing faces, that folks would had carved into their pumpkins….

Pumpkin girl 6

Pumpkins we had grown.

Pumpkins we loved sharing.

And, I would smile.

🙂

If I was the Pumpkin Girl.

Halloween magic heart 300

Halloween loooooms.

Frolic and merriment tip-toe through haunted corridors..

My jack-o-lantern candles are flickering.

What about yours?

 🖤 , V

ps:  All of these pumpkins were grown by me.  Most have been eaten :)  Some I can't part with.  Others, we'll see… bwahahahaaaaa

  1. Awwww…that sounds amazing. I often wonder if I were born in the wrong time because I yearn for a more simple and safe way of life – very much like what you described. In that fantasy community I’d happily buy a few wee pumpkins and offer you a freshly baked treat too because that’s what friends do. <3

  2. Marilyn says:

Oh for sure you must go for it Pumpkin Girl. I think here in Portland, people would love it so much. They do appreciate the creative spirit that a Pumpkin Girl would portray.

  3. Jill James says:

Matty would be in a very handsome velvet doggy cape, of course! and of course, you would have a calling card…….

  4. amy boelter says:

Such a fun post as always! You always transform me into a dreamy, fun filled fantasy land! Amy pinkdaizies.typepad.com

    So YOU!
And your home~grown pumpkins are SPEC~TAC~U~LAR!
You can be THE PUMPKIN GIRL at my house anytime you wanna bring your adorable little magical self up to Bainbridge Island!
    xoxoxoxo
    Happy Halloween to you Sweet~Pea!

  6. Linda Diane says:

I loved your sweet post, Vanessa. It caused me to stop and think of when times were simpler and made me wonder what I could do to bring some simplicity back into my own life. OK, the overflowing craft room kind of puts a damper on those thoughts. HA! : )
I am imagining all the great satisfaction you are feeling at having nurtured and coaxed all those pumpkins into growing this year. Truly you ARE the Pumpkin Girl!

  7. I can totally picture that scene….lovingly filling the basket with your pumpkins in the Fall…then maybe your apples next….then Spring bouquets in April….then strawberries and peaches…all things sweet and delicious and grown with great care in your magical garden…
…I see you peddaling and peddling….all with a huge grin…til you would no longer be called “Pumpkin Girl”, but “That Smiling Girl”…ringing your fairy chimes while Matty howls in the back 🙂
It seems I already subscribe to your sweet offerings…for I am smiling ear to ear myself 😀 Thank you!

  8. Renee says:

And they would sing a song about the pumpkin girl and her lovely baskets of pumpkins:)
I want life to be like that too.

  9. Laura says:

Oh I would have been so delighted to see the pumpkin girl at my door today! Instead I had dig my pumpkins out of the bin at the grocery store. I made some soup, but I bet the pumpkin girl’s pumpkins would have been better…;-)
Happy Halloween! Hope it’s a perfectly spooky and magical one.

  10. Cookie-Fee says:

🙂 oh, that was just so very sweet 🙂 and I cant stop smiling :)…hence the Smileys 😉
I dont have my own pumpkin-latern…if only there was a pumpkin girl living around here 😉
But today I´m going to bake halloween cupcakes for my nieces halloween-party 🙂
Hope you´ll have the best halloween ever ever or at least a pretty perfect one 🙂
    kisses and cuddles

  11. What a delightfully magical story woven through your gorgeous images. I am so happy to stop by today!
If you came to my home, StoneGable, I would have you in for a hot cup of something and talk squash!!!!
We actually grew gourds, baby boo and jack-be-littles this year. What fun! But I would buy my big pumpkins right out of your bike cart!
    Yvonne

  12. Kathy says:

But you already ARE the Pumpkin Girl. You shared your pumpkins with us and you were able to see what was done with them when you had the
Halloween Party! It’s not the same, I know. It’s through the web “cloud” but you shared your pumpkins! Happy Halloween! – Kathy

  13. Laura says:

I agree with Kathy—you ARE already the Pumpkin Girl. Also, I liked Jill’s comment about Matty in a velvet cape. It made me think of you driving Matty through the air in front of the moon a la’ ET. Remember that scene? With soaring dorky music and your trademark sparkles all around.

  14. faerwillow says:

~what a world it would be…filled with only great delights to fancy ourselves in and share as you have…maybe just maybe one day..little by little your dream will be…and pumpkin girls and boys as well with be visiting and a community of truly free and wonderful people will come together to celebrate each day! ever so sweetly told…warm wishes and brightest blessings~

  15. Wendy says:

I think you are the Pumpkin Fairy Girl, Vanessa. In another dimension that little girl is walking among the pumpkin patch and then bicycling through the street while the inside lights of a warm cozy home greet you. On the other realm, you’re a woman who regales us with the story of your other self. Blessed Samhain to you and Matty of course!

  17. I think you’d be the perfect pumpkin girl Vanessa!
    Jamie 🙂

  18. Oma Linda says:

I have your bike’s evil twin in black. I have a picnic basket in the back with a sign that reads…Dorothy you took too long and now she’s got me. Bwhhahaaaa.
I love the idea of the pumpkin girl. I want her to come by my house and after buying the very cutest ones, I would offer her some goodies and bid her farewell. How adorable are you??????

  19. Cori G. says:

Oh my little Pumpkin girlfriend, I do live in that sweet little village, but it’s in my heart and mind, and guess what? You are my most favorite next door neighbor, in that little land, and we have tea each and every afternoon at a quarter past 3. We place dress up and run through the fields in our white Edwardian gowns…barefoot of course because we have hobbit feet minus the hairy toes…tee hee!!!!
You are so darling my beloved Friendling of the elfin creature kind and your pumpkins are a bright cheery delight.
    xoxo cori

  20. Hello there sweet Pumpkin Girl…those pumkins are splendid indeed! Oh, and Happy Halloween…I know how much you love spooky ghost stories – pop over for a spooky visit and some apple cider x

  21. Laura says:

I want to live in the pumpkin girl’s village! I want to help the pumpkin girl with growing and delivering her pumpkins! 🙂
I finally carved up one of mine today for jack o lantern time tomorrow and mine fingers are all orangey… I hope you have a loverly and magical halloween!

  22. I loved this post of yours. So sweet and beautiful pictures too! I so do enjoy your blog. Also, you have inspired me to save our pumpkin seeds this year and try our hand at planting them on a hill in our backyard.
Hope your Halloween is spooky and fun!
    Boo!

  23. Pumpkins and gourds are so much fun to grow! They always surprise us! Enjoy your weekend, sweet friend! 🖤

  24. Ann says:

Honey, you just ride that pumpkin bike of yours on over to East Tennessee (careful on the mountains), and I will buy your wares and treat you well. What a lovely harvest! I had a bumper crop of gourds myself that grew out of my compost heap!

  25. I love everybody’s comments…and I think we all want to live in the village where the pumpkin girl lives, and when she comes around we will all buy her lovely pumpkins.
Thank you for the sweet, nostalgic post about a sweet, fanciful pumpkin girl who cheers the hearts of many….YOU!!!!!

  26. Theresa says:

I do indeed dream of a world such as what you’ve described. That place would be most magical. I wish I were indeed a pumpkin girl – and live in a beautiful country place and do nothing but craft and bake all day…in a place where everyone knows everyone else…and everyone is friendly and loving and sharing. It’s good to dream…Hope you are having a really wonderful day. Thanks for bringing a dreamy smile to my face…Theresa xoxo

  27. Elaine says:

Vanessa, I seriously think you could do that here in Portland :~)
