Halloween Beckons…

I can’t believe it, I just can’t.

Halloween looms, it’s here, it’s so near.

Hallows eve 1

Thank you for the extra fun last minute annual Halloween party.

I looooved visiting everyone!

Although, somehow when leaving a comment on a newspaper website, I got signed up for google+ and now everything I do is under google plus.  So if I visited you under google+ I have no clue how that happened or how to sign out 🙂

It was such good fun.

Wasn’t the masked man freaky?

He turned up with the masks without me knowing, we all got a fright.

Pups included, haha.

But now, here we are, the eve of Halloween.

It came too soon, too soon.

I panic with the time fluttering by so quickly.

Wowie.

Hallows eve 3

I have been doing soooo many things around here.

Truth be told, for about 8 days I have been doing major refreshers around here.

Painting (of the wall and ceiling variety), fluffing, rearranging this and that.

Washing curtains, having cable guys move cables.

You know, all that sort of house stuff.

You know how you move a painting, and realize you need to paint the wall behind it?

And then all of a sudden you realize you need to paint another wall, and then another, and then another, and then another?  And all of a sudden you snowball into major home stuff?

That’s what happened to me.

Also, the garden calls us.

It’s bitter sweet you know, seeing the change.

It has been cool in the evenings, low 80’s during the day.

Some plants think it’s spring, others know, it’s time to say good-bye.

The pups and I head out to check on things.

Hallows eve 16

I am still bringing in pumpkins.

There are so many more than I realized.

I have not even started taking pumpkins off of the domed garden area.

There are dozens and dozens there.

And, I won’t take this guy below until Thanksgiving maybe?

Unless we get some really random cold that is.

Hallows eve 15

I am only taking the guys on really dry vines these days.

It’s such an autumnal ritual for me now.

I am one of those people who needs full holiday immersion.

As I get older, it gets harder to feel engulfed in seasons in the way I neeeeeeed.

But the garden helps me with that in a major way.

Thank goodness, for my sanities sake, for pumpkins.

Hallows eve 11

We pass some huge flowering morning glories…

Hallows eve 2

On our way to the back, where the veggie garden is located.

Hallows eve 10

I can’t believe there are still pumpkins growing new and fresh.

Crazy Arizona warmth makes it possible.

Hallows eve 14

Hallows eve 13

There are over 40 of the little guys below.

And boy, they are hard as rocks.

I think they will last for a very long time without going soft.

Last year I bought one tiny pumpkin for 70 cents that had a HUGE long stem.

I couldn’t pass it up because of the stem.

I used the seeds this year outside the domed garden area, and they took off like crazy, and made ever so many babies.  It’s unreal.  I love that sort of nature magic.

There are some below.

Hallows eve 12

The dance of dry and green is happening in every way.

The basil is hanging on.

And there are hundreds of tomatillos happening.

Hallows eve 17

When you walk through the garden you get that wonderful buzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Bees everywhere during this fall spring in the desert.

Hallows eve 21

It’s wonderful.

I love seeing the growing things thinking it’s spring.

Hallows eve 9

Now we go into the large enclosed garden, to take a bunch of punkins that grew in there.

All those marigolds self seeded.

I love them so, they smell sweet and lovely.

Hallows eve 7

I used some of these pumpkins on the porch and others for Halloween party fun.

Hallows eve 27

So many shapes and sizes.

Gotta love those pumpkin creatures.

Hallows eve 25

I roast and puree most of them, and freeze the puree for baking and making all winter, and spring and summer, until there are more.

Off we go through the front garden…

Hallows eve 6

It’s flower power goodness right now.

I just sit out there in the warm sun and chilly breeze.

Butterflies and bees fluttering around.

Dogs wrestling.

Thinking about things I want to paint and make.

And, I am in my own heaven.

I love my little world so.

Simple, perfectly imperfect.

It fills me up.

I can’t explain it.

Hallows eve 5

But now…

Now we must infuse with pumpkin love.

Hallows eve 20

Are you sick of the pumpkins yet??

😉

Hallows eve 18

I love all the varieties that turned up.

Pie Pumpkins, fairy tale, cinderella (rouge vif d’entampes), jack be littles, and a few mid size every day jack-o-lantern styles, to name a few.

Hallows eve 24

We set them up here and there.

I have to confess, I am a bit late for Halloween decorating.

(although I did decorate my front gate a couple weeks ago)

Horse needs a ribbon.

Hallows eve 19

I intend to do it up a little more today.

And plan a creepy meal for dinner tomorrow.

With all my little (and huge) pumpkins lined up for the occasion.

Hallows eve 22

Someone needs a costume.

Hallows eve 23

I don’t know why?

I just LOVE autumn and halloween times.

There is a magic in it for me.

You too?

Memories of goodness.

The scent of a candle inside a carved pumpkin makes my knees weak.

I think of being so excited as a kid, dressing up.

All the adults would dress up too.

We would make caramel and candy apples.

And carve pumpkins.

There were festivals, and costume contests.

Everyone dressed up for school.

It was one day of dress up heaven for me.

Sparkles and cackles galore.

The sights and scents with me, tucked into my heart forever.

So wonderful.

Also…

I think the pumpkin king over did himself at my house this year.

Wasn’t he extra kind as kind can be?

Hallows eve 26

Truth be told.

Regarding Halloween…

I loooove the old fashionedness of it, and I love the commercialness of it.

(is that a word?)

Commerciality?

It’s true, I can’t lie.

But, the thing is…

I love seeing all the Halloween junk in the stores.

I looked forward to it.

I love bags of candy with names I have seen my whole life.

I love hearing witch cackles from creepy battery powered dolls in the drug store.

I love scary movies (even though I cover my face) and haunted houses.

I love over decorated lawns, glittered faces and plastic pumpkins for trick or treating.

I love fog machines, and over crowded Halloween stores.

I love pumpkins and changing leaves and apple picking.

I love twinkling lights and chilly nights.

I love bon fires and hay rides.

And halloween make-up that won’t wash off.

I love black and orange mixed together.

And I love how all the candy corn gets gobbled up in my house by a man with the sweetest tooth ever.

I love it all.

What can I say?

That’s just me.

What about you??

Halloween, I love you.

🙂

Sparkly heart

ps:  Does anyone know how to take a dark sap stain out of white carpet?

I am desperate, I have tried a bunch of things, and nothing will work.

Tips?

    Helloooooo
    Queenie’s been away… heavy sigh… I missed the party :o(
But I’m back and surfing through all the missed loviness!
Such fun was had by all.
I too adore the fall, intense warm earthen colors come out to play in the coolness of the weather soooo refreshing after monsoon. Makes Queenie throw open the doors and let the coolness flow throughout the house.
    Have a great day.
    Always, Queenie

  2. laura says:

Never, never tired of pumpkins!! I love Halloween too for all those reasons and more. I hated the thought of not doing any decorating and so was happy to join in at the last minute. I haven’t got a carving pumpkin yet, so I’ll do that tomorrow and then work on getting ready for trick or treaters tomorrow night. Hopefully I’ll have some to give all this candy away too! haha!
    love & blessings
    ~*~
    Happy, Happiest of Halloweens!!!

  3. I never tire of Pumpkins or Halloween or Autumn and await them all the rest of the year once they pass me by, which seems to happen more quickly with each year! I can’t believe it’s here already, and truth be told, I’m a wee sad 🙁 Your home and garden look beautiful! Pumpkin Blessings & a Happy Halloween dear V!

  4. Alia says:

I could never get sick of pumpkins, I love them so! You have got some real beauties there, I am very jealous! I just carved my pumpkin last night. I have learned that you can’t carve to far ahead of time here or it is all mushy and moldy by the time Halloween comes because of the warmth. Halloween is absolutely my favoritest holiday! I love, love, love, it! I hope you had a nice time at my blog party, even though it was late. There were some very interesting costumes. Somehow three different boys ended up wearing costumes that involved tighty-whiteys! Silly boys.

  5. Laura Tieri says:

Wow! Look at all of those beautiful pumpkins! Did you count how many you have?
The smell of the inside of a pumpkin when it’s cut open just brings me back to being a kid!
We don’t have much green left in the garden. We had a bit of a cold spell with frost & snow flurries. That frost took care of anything left outside. This week is pretty nice.
Have you guys had chocolate covered candy corn? I just discovered it.
I just love this time of year! All those things you already mentioned & everybody has fall festivals going on.
I like Christmastime too but it’s a little more hectic at that time.
I like when it gets colder & you know it’s time to make soup & chili! I’m a soup freak! I could live on soup!
    Stay well!
    HaPpY HaLlOwEeN!

  6. Chris says:

    I love it all too!
It’s my favorite holiday, and I haven’t had time to celebrate it. So I really look forward to tonight and tomorrow. Finally able to relax and enjoy.. hot chocolate, jacuzzi, lighted candles and pumpkins… I love all your pumpkins! The more the merrier! We actually still have tomatoes on the vines. Amazing!
    xoxo sweetie V

  7. Janel says:

Maybe a salt rub or dawn dish soap for the stain? Or an oxy clean paste? These are things I would try…..good luck and happy All Hallows’ Eve eve!

  8. Cindy says:

I am new to your blog – I love your pumpkins! I can’t believe how many great ones you got. I know exactly what you mean about loving your little world. I feel that way about my gardens and house. I could be a complete homebody:)

  9. Kelly says:

First let me say, I love how Mr. L. surprised you ALL with his clever and most creepy fun masks!!! What a pair you are!
Next, I could never tire from your FABULOUS Pumpkin Kingdom. I BELIEVE its the love you lavish upon them as you tend to your gardens that keeps them coming back and multiplying. I was amazed at how they even grow in your trees! How wonderful and MAGICAL in my mind. Never stop sharing! NEVER! I mean ….PLEASE!
I too adore the smell of a Jack-o-lantern in the house that has been glowing all night just makes me go AHHHH!
In my Linda Cobb(Queen of Clean)book, she recommends glycerin for tree sap. It does not go into any detail though.
Happy Halloween to you and the boys!!! <3

  10. I Love this Season for all of the reasons you so eloquently cited… there is just something about Halloween and Autumn that Appeals to me so strongly that I’d have to say it is my Favorite time of year to look forward to and Experience. Though I’ve been doing Halloween and Autumn Inspired Posts for ages already I sadly missed Participating in your Halloween Party this year! *Boo Hoo!* But I am enjoying visiting all of those that did come to the Party… always such Inspiration and Enchantment! And I’m having serious Pumpkin Patch Envy… our Season was SO FREAKIN’ HOT this year that only one Pale White Pumpkin survived it in my patch!
Blessings from the Phoenix Desert… Dawn… The Bohemian

  11. I adore all of the varieties of your pumpkins! They are all so very special in their own uniqueness.
I think rubbing alcohol is good for getting pine sap off things. I also use a bar of lava soap and hot water with an old toothbrush for some carpet stains. I rub the damp lava soap onto the spot, then add hot water and scrub it with the tooth brush. And of course there is just good old clorox bleach, but it is caustic and you have to wear rubber gloves and dilute one part clorox to four parts hot water. Just some suggestions. Or pour some white vinegar onto the spot and put sprinkle some baking soda on top and watch it foam up, then scrub with a brush. Compliments of Miss Witchy Teresa.
    Do have a marvelous Halloween!

  12. Renee says:

You have a wonderful magical garden there. Me sick of pumpkins? Never. I love seeing them grow like they are on a tree. I love fall and halloween. I think it is one of my favorites because it is my birthday month. 🙂

  13. Karen says:

I know this may sound weird, but I’ve seen a person take sap out of a dress using peanut butter. It worked. I guess it’s worth a try!

  14. Chrisy says:

If you ever need a holiday Vanessa, head over to my place here in Australia…and give it a bit of a fluffing! Your energy levels are inspiring… Love your garden…so English cottagey… Now re the sap have you tried vodka?

  15. Linnea-maria says:

Wow! Amazing! I love seeing pictures of your pumpking filled garden and all those flowers of course. It’s such a contrast to my own world. We haven’t got snow yet, but my boys are skating. Your green garden is an oasis for your Arizona desert and for mine winter landscape

  16. I’m right there with you Vanessa – I love it all! And I never get tired of pictures of your beautiful pumpkins. It was a good pumpkin year over here too, though we got hit by severe mildew half way through growing season. For next year we know to treat with milk from the get go.
I hope you have a wonderful Halloween!

  17. Miss Linda says:

I have an old remedy, buy a bar of Felsnaptha (spelling..not sure)Your mom might recognize the name. Wet the spot generously, then wet the end of the bar of soap. Scrub and scrub some more you can add more water if you like….then scrape with your nails, some of may come up………Start cleaning the spot with cool water…rinse and rinse and keep rinsing until all the soap is gone.
I use this soap all the time for just about any stain (ink, ketchup, mustard, permanent marker…there are very few stains I can’t remove.
    I love this post!

  18. This is gorgeous, V! What a long, lovely growing season you have. Although, it’s not like all that would thrive if it wasn’t for your magic green thumb. Thumbs?

  19. DogsMom says:

Miss Linda is on to something. Fels Naptha can be found in the laundry aisle and looks like a bar of soap. Grocery stores and hardware stores carry it.
Another idea is to put the sap covred item in a freezer first and peel off what you can. That may be difficult with a carpet. Freeze it with ice cubes?
I love seeing your pictures and getting pulled into your narrative.
I am so happy about your enthusiasm and energy.
The first Saturday of November is Book Lovers Day, so find some time to curl up with a good book.
Our friend Marfi Bradford is starting a weekly feature on Books and Blankets in November. I am waiting to learn more.
Hug the boys and don’t let them get too spooked tonight!

  20. Gina says:

Thank you for sharing all the beautiful pumpkin pictures …I love your little world ! Makes me smile 🙂
Did Mr. Check your mail yet ??????? I am so impatient lol…….I can’t wait for you to get it!!!!!
    Xoxo Gina

  21. Linda Diane says:

You could start a roadside stand and sell your pumpkins, but then again, maybe they are too much like your children! Do you ever make pumpkin soup? I can’t remember if you’ve ever mentioned that before. I know you must make so many yummy pumpkin dishes throughout the year!
Our plants around here are enjoying a reprieve from the awful summer heat. Many seem to have a new lease on life, just as you described about yours.
Thank you for sharing some childhood memories. Your blog helps bring out childhood excitement in all of us, I think!

  22. dena miller says:

Oh Vanessa, Pumpkins Galore!!! How truly Magical they are!!! Lucky you🖤
I wish I had a tip for the carpet stain. I was thinking you may try to google a remedy or search on Pinterest.
    xoxo
    Dena

  23. Happy Halloween! I could never tire of pumpkins – ever! Your words are beautiful.I love all of that, the tacky and the rustic. Autumn is a wondrous time of year.
    Sam x

  24. Ooooo, I am on it!!! Thank yoU!! I heard about the vodka too, sounds
good too. My sap has melted into the carpet, so there is nothing but a
dark stain in it, yucky mucky!! Hope this works, danka!! xo
