Unquestionably Autumn…

It is undoubtedly, unquestionably, autumn in Southern Arizona.

The autumn light is here, the air has shifted.

The scent, the coolness.

Warm days, chilly nights.

A second spring emerges like clock work…

Autumn 1

Hello tallest marigolds.

It gets so hot here during summer, that flowers pull back a little.

Only to reawaken as October sets in.

But that sun, that dusty amber sun says it all, doesn't it?

Autumn 2

I took waaaay too many photos.

I was just so amused at the shift, how it's nice to be outside now.

How the heat has lifted and you don't explode into fireworks like a vampire in the Arizona heat anymore.  Until next summer that is 😉

How just like that, the weather became that glorious weather that we are known for in autumn and winter.

Little petals know it.

Zinnias…

Autumn 4

And, dinner-plate dahlias below.

Autumn 5

So many pumpkins crushing the enclosed garden.

I stopped counting at 40.

Most of them little guys with long stems, love em.

Autumn 3

Autumn 6

Just when I thought the big fairy tale pumpkins were done, a whole new wave of them are growing.

Green and young.

Autumn 17

The two toned marigolds turn up just as they always do.

Autumn 7

And bees come back in droves, enjoying all the new blooms.

Especially the flowering basil.

Wonder what their honey tastes like?

Autumn 13

The vegetable garden is embarrassingly overgrown.

Mister Lovee got rid of a bunch of garden brush for me.

We added it to our too big heap.

We have a brush trailer in our yard being filled up.

We have a stellar helper, and are on load 5 or 6.

Eeek!

Autumn 9

The colors are exquisite.

The cosmos grew huge all summer and are finally flowering.

Worth the wait for sure, such a fuchsia.

Autumn 10

Autumn 11

The setting sun, in its golden glow, highlights everything.

Autumn 12

Flowers grew in the vegetable garden this year.

Self seeded gobs of them.

Autumn 14

The pumpkin vines begin to dry out.

Autumn 16

Autumn leads the way.

Autumn 15

Autumn 18

I stroll about.

Watching the change.

Always amazed, another year, another season…

Autumn 19

Autumn 20

Just in time for spookiness, Mister Lovee brings home a desert find.

Bones.

Huge bones.

Autumn 21

I watch the sun set, colors on flowers in the front garden hovering, swaying.

Autumn 24

Flowers turning up in the cool.

Smart, aren't they?

Autumn 23

The setting sun dances through leaves like orbs.

I love autumn.

We wait and wait and wait for autumn.

And then we try to capture as much of it as we can.

But always, feeling like sand is pouring through our fingers.

Autumn 25

Enchanted by autumnal goodness.

Autumn 26

Bewitched by its gifts.

And its light.

Its crispness, the memories it ignites.

Autumn 8

Yes, it is autumn.

For sure, and for real.

Autumn 22

In Southern Arizona, leaves are very slowly thinking about turning.

But the light tells us, fall is here.

The scent of fragrant wood burning last night.

We made a small fire (two nights in a row), mesquite wood smelled like floral incense to me.

I sat and watched Mister Lovee fill the brush trailer full.

Stomping to make room.

The dogs ran around playing, coming over to me and putting their little chins on my lap.

Me, feeling grateful.

Learning so much about life, how we fear too much.

And believe too little.

The journey more important that the destination they say?

More true everyday.

We put on sweatshirts, and grab dinner.

Dust in car headlights.

Life in deep breaths.

Autumn in all its goodness.

What does your autumn feel like?

Smell like?

Fresh breaths of early morning air?

Crackling fire?

Love, V

Sparkly heart

ps:  Putting finishing touches on your Halloween invite, to be posted in a day or so.

The most last minute party ever ever ever.

I just got carried away going on ever so many thriftventures this week.

Sitting in great big chairs in Cost Plus World Market, contemplating a table runner with birds.

Buying more toasted seaweed.

Watching Pier 1 explode with Halloween meets Christmas.

(it was like Disneyland in there, I had not been inside in so many years it's not funny)

Buying a rug.

Seat Cushions.

Tidying things up in the living room.

Catching up with a life that got away from me for almost 2 years.

And yet, I pushed through it all, all that time.

Darn, that's crazy cakes.

So much time to feel less than good with chronic pain.

I feel like I have been freed from some curse.

It's good.

It's so good.

I am going here and there, and everywhere.

Out to wonderful dinners with Mister, and shopping, and seeing friends.

I even went on client appointments with him.

I met the plumpest most gorgeous cavalier king charles spaniel, his name is Cuz.

Then I met the most beautiful faced dog I have ever met, ever.

He was a pomeranian named Mickey Mouth 🙂

Adopted after being rescued  from the desert by a couple who swore they would never get another dog again after having to say good-bye to the last one.

After such broken hearts, there they were smiling big with their little furry son Mickey, melting hearts all over Petco.  Renewed joy.  Gotta love it.  Amazing how furs can mend you up just like that.

I looked at snakes and mice and turtles.

I spoke to a kitty that turned on its back and looked at me upside down.

I put on lots of mascara whilst humming.

I drove to see a dear friend who always is an angel.

I visited a little church I love so.

And, I watched the vast desert landscape turn to sunset as I sped past the Biosphere.

So you see, I got a tinge carried away having quite a time of it.

But still…

Life is goooood.

Ain't it?

    Vanessa:
I can’t tell you how happy I am that you are back to your life and feeling so healthy and well. It’s time!
It’s still hot here….too hot. Over 90 degrees today, BUT, fall is in the air. I can see it and smell it. Our Pistache trees are turning early this year and our front porch is decorated for Halloween. I love sitting on the front bench in the evening surrounded by the orange glow of the Jack O’ Lantern lights that line the path.
I am feeling bitter-sweet. Ava started her job today and she’s met a boy that she’s swoony over. With the changing seasons, so comes the passing of time and the growing up of kids. It’s good…but sad too.
Thank you for sharing your lovely photos. Your garden heals my heart from afar.
    xoxo

  2. DogsMom says:

Yes, it is sweatshirt weather here but I am still refusing to close the house windows.
Your photos are so beautiful, so wonderful and magical. The colors are glorious around my area but so swiftly tumbling to the ground.
We have a couple of new furry faces in the household. While smaller than cats, they are of the barking variety. Quite the change for me.
My thrift-ventures have produced some long sought after items including a new crystal ball and stand! I am hoping to get the camera and computer talking to each other soon so I can share.

  3. Your pumpkin vines are so amazing!!! I have to try and grow them in the trees like that! Love the flowers too!

  4. Cameron says:

Late, maybe….but this time of year is so rushed through in the stores, in our minds….it feels wonderful to have an excuse to slow things down and squeeze out every ounce of Halloween before we have to make the switch to the hustle bustle that is the end of the year 🙂
I am so glad to hear you are renewed, happy and pain free! No need to apologize for getting caught up in the wonders of Life!

  5. Kelly says:

Soak it all in V! Enjoy every minute! It is magical season time here in Arizona. The moon tonight is just perfect for our lovely temperature outside! Ill bet its even better where you are, where pumpkins GLOW!!!
No worries, its not late, Really! Just glad we have the chance to celebrate another spooktacular Halloween season with you! Glad you are feeling better and enjoying your furries and Mr. L and your Beautiful Fanciful Gardens!!!<3

Fall is here too, we have had two nights with temps down to 0 degrees and the trees have all these gorgeous colors.
Next year, I will try growing pumpkins too 😉

  8. jill james says:

Yes, Dearest Dear Miss Vanessa, life is lovely isn’t it? I am so happy you are having a beautiful fall and feeling better each day! How wonderful it is to see how much life is still left in your gardens. The only thing that is still trying to make its last appearance here are a few last nasturtium blossoms adding bright orange to the otherwise withering little porch garden. I have been harvesting seeds from them and the morning glories to use for next year. It’s one of the last somewhat warm days here and I’m drying linens outside in the sun.
I’m dancing on one foot and then the next waiting for the party invitation!!!!
    Sending hugs,
    Betty

  14. I’m so happy you are feeling better and doing well. This post gave me a little boost in spirits and I thank you. I’ve been feeling a little bummed-out lately. Well, burnt out is more like it. Just need some R&R, I suppose?
Our Golden Raintree is blooming right now. For one month out of the year it produces TONS of yellow flowers that eventually turn into these amazing peach-blossom colored lanterns with tiny seeds in them. It’s stunning to see during this change.
Florida had a *teeny-tiny* “cold snap” for a bit last week and it gave me a thrill, but now we’re back to upper 80’s & 90’s for temps. Supposedly if the Tropical Storm winds reach our area, we’ll have morning temps in the 40’s. (NO WAY! Fantastic!) Which I hope sticks around until after Halloween because Trick-or-Treating in the coolish weather always makes things feel more festive.

  15. Miss Misha, it is 85 here today, but 48 night. I love it. I
love these days wher it is warm in the sun and chilly in the shade 🙂 Off
    to paint a wall 😉

Those leaves. Right now it’s freezing and raining here. I wish my autumn was bit less crisp and with more pumpkins growing in my garden. No worries about a late party invite, we’ve all been waiting and prepared 😉

  17. Linda P. says:

I am so so so thankful you are feeling better, Vanessa! I know you are looking at life in a wonderful new way.
I just love these strolls through your beautiful garden, and I love how you share your thoughts with us as we walk along!
Yes, some of our plants are perking up with the cooler temps as well. I love that!
I love Pier 1 Imports and Cost Plus World Market! Oh, how I would decorate my house to the Bohemian hilt if I had a bottomless bank account! I would buy whatever calls out my name! Ah, tis OK that I can’t. I just add treasures when I can–some I make, some I am gifted with, and others I do purchase here and there! Decorating a home is a fun process. : )
Today is a really nice, deliciously cool day. Enjoy your weekend, sweet lady.

  18. Linda Diane says:

Oops. Linda P. above SHOULD read Linda Diane. ; )

  19. What a delightful post! Autumn smells like apples, bonfires, and barbeque at college football games!
I can’t wait to see what your Halloween invite is like. Thanks for writing such a charming blog, Vanessa!

  20. Mickey Mouth…I love it!
M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-ETH-E Ha! Ha! Hee! Hee!
    You crack me up!
All of your flower photos are divine.
Yes, I can’t get enough of this time of year…it has to be my absolute favorite!
On another person’s blog, she said it is the time of year when gold falls from the sky (the trees). I love the crispness of the air. Although it did get up to 85 today, it still beats the 100 degree plus we had all summer.
I get into a more creative mood when the weather is cooler. It seems to unfog my brain.
You have a way of capturing the moment and passing it on to all of us here in fairy blog land.
    Miss Teresa

  21. Miss Linda says:

So very awesome to see you back on your feet. It is wonderful to see how fast our bodies heal themselves. Our bodies know more than we do….
It is defiantly fall here in Michigan (see blog). It is 8:oo a.m. and the temperature is 42. A coat day for sure. The air smells wonderful and once in a while you can smell burning leaves. It is a favorite fall smell.
    Waiting anxiously for Halloween fun.

  22. Chrisy says:

Yes ‘fear too much….believe too little’ we need reminding of this…love your words…what a gift you have!

  23. Gina says:

Life is good and tickles my heart that you are feeling so much better 🙂
Thank you for the lovely post 🙂 as always makes my day!

All those pumpkins! You have so many could set up a road side pumpkin stall and make some good money I bet! I still need to go to the store to get one for carving. I just love carving a pumpkin for Halloween, I do it every year no matter what!
I am so glad that autumn is finally here a bit!

Playing catch up but I just wanted to tell you how happy it makes me that you are free of pain and can get out and do! Your garden photos are, as always, an inspiration to me! Can’t wait to get settled in a new place so I can start a new (very small) garden.
