Okay, let's be honest here. I can have pretty great moments of lucky streaks. Some moments of unlucky streaks, but some very good lucky streaks. And, those good moments really should not be neglected. (this has nothing to do with cards, but come along and I'll attempt to make some sense of it all…)
You, yourself, might not call it luck. You might say, "Now, Vanessa, you have nice friends who like you, and find magical things to surprise you with." And, yes, I would have to agree, most of the treasures I receive are pretty darn wonderful. But, these wonderful things are found by luck, aren't they? Even if they are found by other people?
Actually, Many of these objects are found by me…Walking down the street, I see something peeking out of the dirt, I pick it up….I pull, I tug, and Presto, Treasure. I peek in little sheds, and again, Treasures….
I have to stop and ask, are these found and received items really treasures? Or is it simply my perception that makes this item a treasure. Perhaps it is only special to me? Have I come to use that word all too liberally? Treasures. Or, would these items be called something more on the lines of "junk" to you?
Some of the things I find here and there, are things like, A Ship…
An old fan that used to be at the museum pottery studio, with a huge cast iron stand. It is a piece of art in itself.

A Scale
A treasure box with drawers made of old wood cheese boxes…
Mermaid Bottles that I have placed under glass domes…
And, there is much more junk, I mean treasures, but I have to save some for later…I just LOVE thrifting adventures!!! I love them!!!
These are some of the things I keep in the country, as I am maxed out on space at my home in town. Snipettes can be seen here, here and here.
I used to sit and look at my favorite book called
By Mary Randolph Carter, just wishing that I too could have country treasures. Little did I know, I would have that in Catalina. I wanted to be able to use all kinds of tattered things that just wouldn't work in my city home. The fact that I have a place to do this, is so dreamy to me…
Some pages from within the book (The one below to the left looks so much like my Mr. Lovee's hippie shack, it just ain't funny). I adore the kid in the pic to the right. I almost want one just to be able dress up and use as a prop. I am joking…..
I just adore old Milagros, and those Chalkware Carnival Prizes! How I'd love my own stash…
I have loved this book to death…Have you seen it, or do you own it (Ithink it is out of print)?? It sure doesn't help reign in the treasure seeker, does it???
Oh I never ever, in all the times I have read through this book, seen the absolute back page…Look how cute!! (click to enlarge)
Thrifting and such, was not common to me as a kid. But, when I got my dandy white rabbit convertible at16, I'll tell ya, the first thing I did was drive to a town with fabulous thrift stores. It has always been magic to me.
My first experience with a vintage item was when I was 15 and my grandmother took me to the little door at the top of her stairs…She told me about some coats that my great aunt who had died left behind. I myself, almost died of intrigue. I still have those coats, and wear them today.
All that said….
I veered off of the main subject which is. Luck and treasures.
The story I was going to tell goes like this…
So, there I am, in bed, lounging around, eating chocolates and watching a movie in my loftish space. Locked away from the world. When I hear a knocking at what is, my still under-construction outside door and patio. I peek out. Why, It is Dick Arnold, from, "The Arnold Klingefus Ensemble." I am shocked, I hop out of bed…Open the door, and Dick says, "I have a surprise for you, but you have to close your eyes."
I think, what?? Where? What can it be? An instrument? A painting??? What What What???? Let me preface this by saying, I collect things with wheels. (Not cars though)
So, I walk over to his car, and this is what proceeds to happen…
I see wood. Or Bamboo? Yes! A bike entirely made of Bamboo???Wood???
I bring it inside to admire it, and determine if I want to remove the wheels and turn it into sculptural art??? Hanging from a wall perhaps? Well, Mr. Arnold found this lovely item at a sale called "I don't want it anymore, it is yours." He said it was the Art-iest thing they had and he thought of me!!! Lucky me or what??
IS that a lucky treat? You tell me??? What is your favorite find, do you love junk? Can you see yourself in a billowing skirt of your favorite kind, coming across a bin of trinkets, and squatting, your skirt billowing around you to search through piles and piles? Are you into it? Or, would you prefer a clean little shop….I don't know.. I love tattered treasures…
I am also delighted to share that two of my favorite blogs to visit: With a Twist and a Turn she gets her Wish" Queenie Carly, always smart and funny, and Allyson Hill, Miss Creative herself, have been so kind as to believe that I have a "Thinking Blog." I am so glad, as I was getting concerned that I would be winning something for "The rambling blog." I think that such recognition from our fellow bloggers is very very special and important. Afterall, we are the people who read eachothers blogs everyday (almost). We are the ones who know what we like.
So the rules – straight from Miss Carly herself:
If you read even a few blogs, you've probably started to notice this little Thinking Blogger Award graphic around. Apparently the blog world is having a heyday promoting all the blogs that its population of bloggers love to read.
1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think!
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme or blog that you enjoy.
3. Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' with a link to the post that you wrote.
So, I must participate you see, and I do love this sort of thing…Sooo, here we are. Here are my five choices, not in any particular order. But Blogs that I love to read , I enjoy them tremendously, and they make me think…An Odd Duck, KnitSonya, My Marrakech, Cally Creates & Gilfling's Designs.
I can not say enough about these girls. I wish I was allowed to list many many more. All I have to say is, I love all the blogs I read to pieces. So, if you see me in your neck of the woods, know, you are one of my dearest thinking blogs too. You know who you are. I know you know!!!

I’m compelled to delurk. You got me at the mention of Junk. I love junk, and not the normal junk, it must be obscure, and hard to find, and buried underneath something so that you have to gingerly dig it out of a massive rotting pile (or not!).
But just thought I’d let you know you’re not alone.
Cheers, and here’s to happy hoarding!
cz
What a lovely arty surprise…don’t you enjoy it to pieces when someone will think of you because they see that “perfect” thing, and it actually is the perfect thing? It just makes me smile all over!!
Oh, I love so many things…I was just in my bedroom organizing and dusting and going through things, and I was astounded at the amount of rhinestone jewelry I have…It was a bit overwhelming, as I usually throw the stuff all together, and then forget about it…
The book is wonderful, and didn’t they do Garden Junk too? My mother has that one…it’s dreamy. We’re a hunt for it kind of family, as that’s what both my parents do for a living…I think I had to inherit it (although, I told them I wouldn’t) My mother is determined to stop downsizing…and is now going to hoard and upsize…tee-hee!
What neat treasures!
Yes, I love thrifting and love digging through “rubble” to find the “diamonds in the rough”. I have MANY! 🙂 I also have that Mary Randolph Carter book, as well as Big City Junk, which I also love. Great books!
I would be hard-pressed to name my favorite treasure. ONE of my favorites is an old jet black cougar lamp with a green metal accordian lampshade and a clear crystal finial. I love that lamp. 🙂
Hooray for treasures! I loved seeing some of yours today! That bicycle is amazing!
xo,
Karen Beth 🙂
Oh my gaw! I can not believe that bike!!! Bamboo bikes?! Who even knew there was such a thing.
That’s a remarkable treasure -fersure!
yrmoab!
So nice to hear from you again! I have been lurking in your store! Love this post, I am definitely a treasure seeker! I have been trying to decide what my favorite find would be. Probably one of my first was about the same age you talked of at a youth fundraiser garage sale. I bought a dress that I always imagined belonged to a war bride for a quarter. I loved wearing that thing! I also love the copper pot in my living room. I saved it from certain death when my dad and uncle were cleaning out my grandparents garage. Turned out it belonged to my great grandmother and she used it to do the wash in. It is so fun to have things that have a story isn’t it? Or at least ones that make you wonder what their story is, don’t you wish you knew the story of that bicycle? Wow! xoxo
One of the best books, still ! JUNK.
Wow, that bike is a treasure!! You can ride it or it can just be A R T.
What a fun surprise. 🙂
LIdy
true true treasures…. i can’t even possibly start to pick my favorie piece of “junk”
and yay for blogs and bloggy friends!
Now I’m definitely itching to go thrifting, you think that will make my eczema worse? Anyhow, love the old ship you found, how beautiful! The mermaid bottle -wow! Your place is definitely one for the treasure hunter and I love all the eye-candy I spot everywhere in your photos. You better be careful, or one day I’d come with my sleeping bag and demand squatters right! 🙂 -love the look of that book by the way.
I love lucky people and believe I am one of the luckiest people around….and I am….
You are speaking my language today missy!
I don’t know what language Smooch is speaking up there…I’m gonna hafta asker.
THAT SHIP!!! Snakes alive I’ve never seen such! And THAT BIKE! I’ve got to get out more!! You are very deserving of whatever junky treasure comes your way.
Did you see Calmity Kim’s Louis bear? It is in her ETSY shop and has a ship on it’s head like that one only she made it out of sheet music! Amazing.
Bueno dia mi amiga loca 🙂
that bike is amazing!!! Did you know, strangely I have never ridden a bike….now that I am 31-derful…it seems too late to try.
also yay for you nominating Gillian, she is a doll.
Ohhhhh…treasures they are matey. (Pirate talk just came out of me). I have recently found a junky store (several buildings that used to be a gas station) that has a rusty building. No, not the building itself, but a building filled with rusty things!!! I am in heaven there looking for rusty bits for my art!!! Makes sense to me!!! Thanks for brightening my day!! Rebecca
Love all your treasures and can’t believe that bike it is amazing!
Oh my gosh…I am so glad I hopped over to your blog from Miz smooches…I’ve been enjoying all of your posts. I love your Mother’s day trip. I’ll be back again. I’m saving you to my favorites.
1st ,I must say, yes,I love the American Junk book, and their sequels.
2nd,I believe, truly in my heart, that we draw certain things to ourselves. I know I do this. Now what I draw to myself is often times weird(donkeys pulling wagon planters)and rarely something practical. I just began playing(a wee bit ) in that funhouse known as e-bay,and bid on and won, vintage(new dead stock) in a box, tooled leather pumps. Now I have been drooling over some re-pros that cost over 300 dollars. No way would that be a practical purchase, not with 700 dollar musical theatre summer camps coming up!However a fraction of that number(for the shoes) woud be heaven. Now I just gotta work on drawing that perfect modernist house to myself, with room for all of us to stretch out!
OOOOOOOOOOOOO…..the boat!!!! the bike!!!! the mermaid-under-glass……..my LORD woman, you HAVE his a lucky streak! WOW! so much wonderfulness!!!
Oh, what fun treasures! Every one of them is fantastic – the rusting boat and that bamboo bicylcle! That book about Junk!! Oh, how wonderful it is! I love those books!
This post was a treasure! That bicycle, oh my!!! just the best and the ship! I don’t have nearly the luck in finding treasures. I found a doll the other day at the thrift shop and bought it because it was only $5, but I’ll tell you, she is fairly creepy and I have her tucked away out of sight!
Thank you for all the links to new and wonderful blogs
miss fanciful the best things in life are free!!!!….love junky bits and bobs tooooo!.
that ship is just rusty and vintage and fab!!
when i was gardening a few weeks back i came across a whole load of pottery pieces…
would love to have struck gold in a treasure chest though–oh’ yeah that would be magical!!!….when i was about 7 years old my mum gave me a little patch of ground to grow veg and flowers in…i remember digging deep…and finding a virgin mary figure with angel by her feet ( i had forgot that!!).
only 2 inches long but beautiful- i thought it was proper treasure….awwww.
when i go to the tip…there are different area’s for recycling- in the wood section are always such finds like wooden childs chairs and also old vintage box’s and desks…but the workers there get really picky with you if you try and take things…silly hey cos’ if that isnt recycling what is??.
by the way…im slowly comming to terms with things in my life…still abit dazed…confused…but getting on with life!
your sweet email made me smile- thanks x x x
loving your blog as always,
x x x x kazzy x x x x
Can’t wait to take a boo at your thinking blogs. Yes I too love to browse the thrift stores and have found many treasures. Bryan still wears a black snap shirt that I got for five dollars that would have been at least $90.00 now. It fits like a glove and the material is superior. I love flea markets too. One of my dearest friends is a freak for thrifting, as is my daughter. Great place for an artist’s imagination to flourish! My daughter makes purses out of vintage material and finds amazing beads for jewelry! Great post, rad bike, I’ve never seen anything like it before! I am however trying to scale down from loading my place with piles of material items….so I am extremely selective. My rule ism I have to LOVE it! Great post as usual.
Hugs Sherrie
Maybe I’m not looking hard enough but I never find any cool junk. Even when I am looking. I’ll go to flea markets and only find stuff that’s fallen off the truck and bottles of shampoo and cds that have been sitting in the hot sun all day. No thanks!
Oh my goodness Vanessa – so right…where do I even start with this post!! Okay…first things first – I read the post that you had linked to about losing your keys – you almost had me in tears – oh my – your keys and you wonderful mamma were protecting you from perhaps a horrible fate – I really believe that !!! And thank goodness!!!
And next – that ship – I have never seen such a wonder, I adore it, I have to find/build/steal/borrow/invent one for myself!! how could anyway discard such a beautiful thing! I adore all your finds – such treasures indeed – my mission for my new home is to fill it with thrifting treasures!
Lastly – a thinking blogger award? For me? Really?!!!! This has made my day!! Thank you thank you! I have no idea why …it is all just ramblings but gosh I am delighted! Now all I have to do is torture my mind in trying to figure out how on earth I am going to be able to work out how to get that blogging award thingy in my blog! A challenge for my brain! Wow!
xxx
That bike is sooo…. umm… The Great Gatsby! Don’t you think! You do need a great skirt and then fill the basket with flowers. Voila!
One of the many reasons that I adore you is that your favorite book is about junk. God, you are so refreshing.
Vanessa, hello…I especially like the treasure box with drawers made of old wood cheese boxes…I want one of those my own self.
p.s. I have started a new blog….take a peek when you get the time, it is only a few days old though, so keep that in mind.
http://www.naturesconservatory.blogspot.com
a great post…if it makes my heart flutter then its definetly a treasure…i love saving beutiful things from the rubbish tip! just imagine how many treasures
are thrown away…weep weep
love that bicycle seat…reminds me of the carribean!

See you soon!!
I love the ship. I think i need to be an official pirate. Pirata. I have never seen that Junk book before. Interesting how much stuff each individual person accumulates in a lifetime, or even a year, or in your case, a week!
I love the ship too and the bike is fantastic. Junk, schmunk, no such thing, this is treasure!
All those things are treasures, not junk! And I love them – especially the bike! As for the book, I don’t have that one, but I have her new one, which is also about the love of old and tattered things. And I have an ever-expanding collection of milagros and prayer ornaments. xo
I loved seeing all of your trash treasures. I am quite the dumpster diver myself and am always in awe of what people are willing to toss. You’ve got soem real finds there – the bike is fabulous!
Wow, thank you so much. I love your stuff in the latest post, too. I have to catch up now and read the whole thing.
