What a day. It snowed. It actually snowed. Arizona Snow. White, just outlining the prickly pear cactus…I sit here, with a marvelous scent enveloping the house at the studio…Sweet and warm..Perfect for snowy weather…
I was tidying up my loftish space today and discovered a few of my favorite Bakelite Bracelets in my bag…I took some pics at home to share my collection, forgetting completely that I had these lovelies with me (pictured below). How can you not love Bakelite? It intrigues and entices me. Like a shiny candy does a child…Lucite is a friend also…A good friend…
Yes it is true, I am not the owner of some of the Bakelite that has inlaid pieces, polka dots..But, I do enjoy my collection tremendously.. and I have a few cameos and pendants that make up for it in my book…
And, if you too love Bakelite, as much as I do… Then you should jump off that very high cliff into slight anxiety and read the story of the Bakelite family… Up to the Grandson…I won't ruin it for you.. I have the out of print book, but it is in the gallery and it is snowing.. I will promise the title to anyone who has interst, just ask…I own several bakelite books, and wow, well, you know me and books… Lost for hours is where you will find me…
The good news is that I have started receiving Bakelite treasures from friends, family and clients…Necklaces, Brooches, Bracelets, none pictured yet…How lucky, I know… These amazing people in my life…I thank them tremendously…Some even come to me frantic and excited, telling me of a treasure they have for me from a grandmother or great-aunt… Warning that I will be the recepient of Bakelite very shortly….
If they only knew the fit that throws me into…I want to grab them, shake their little shoulders and exclaim, "When, when will this be, when will I receive the Bakelite, where are you hiding it, what is the address?" Seeing as how that would lead to me not receiving said Bakelite…I have to compose myself and say, "Thank you so much, I would gladly accept such a treasure. I adore Bakelite, you can't imagine how I will treasure such a piece." Then I nod gracefully, shake their hand with both of my hands clasped around their one hand, and hope for the best…C'est la Vie.. If it is meant to be mine, it shall…hee hee, I am devilishly rubbing my hands together, plotting the next Bakelite find…
As for Today and snow.. What?? Snow, In Arizona, at the Studio actually. We are at a higher elevation here… (In my Tombstone accent) Well yes Miss, I reckon that, that there is the real thing…White snow, fallin' from that there sky….
Baby, the former already named Yard Sale dog, also enjoyed the snow with me.. We were out there a lot. That is until my already bad Canon stopped working. It is the worst most problemtic camera ever, and I have owned it for only one year! I told Mr. Lovee that I was tempted to throw it out the window.
When the camera slightly started working again, I took some pictures so that Anastasia would be real real proud of me. I made her recipe for Citrus Buttercake…It is Unreal.. I can't stop!!!Thank you sweet Anastasia!!!
I am off to watch the Illusionist, on dvd, with me cake…….No I have not seen it. I also just saw "Lady in the Water" today…I don't know what I think….I don't know why I am slow at watching movies lately…I just don't know. I have accepted that I do not know everything, and that makes me very very happy!
You girls are the best!! Thank you for all your kind words…I enjoy you so very much, truly!!!
Oh and, AmandaButton, here is a little of that book we spoke of, to entice you….The title is "Angels and Fairies, The World's Greatest Art." I found a simliar but not exact book, although it had the same title, Angels and Fairies – The World's Greatest Art. Maybe it is the same with a different cover?

i love you
Bravo Vanessa!! I can smell the cake from here, looks nice and fluffy!
Oh I love all your bakelite bangles…they look great grouped together that way…Did you make your collage crown, its very grand!!
I love all the things you share with us, that book looks beautiful!!
A post full of wonderful tasty delights!! Delicious vanessa!!
The cake sounds delightful and I bet very yummy too! I enjoy my bakelite but in the form of buttons…LOL
Ohhh… bakelite! What a collection you’ve got (I say in my “no, really, I’m not jealous” tone).
I love that red bakelite bracelet of yours with the leaf pattern! Yay for snow, how lovely everything looks and we are continuing with the fairy theme here 🙂
Oh yeah, that cake looks delicious I’m tempted to come round to tea again!
Oh your a Bakers Delight!
oh vanessa! what a wonderful collection. and they look beautiful on your arm…i have unusually small wrists so bangles don’t always work on me.
i am going to email you later about banner stuff…i’ve been drowning under the articles i need to translate into english for a little paper here. (i do it once a month to make a little extra money.)
Hi guys…You can not imagine my shock to see that first comment. Yes, that is a lovely person I loved 8 years ago…I have not seen him since. “George, you officially have my attention, and I am smiling.” Also, Risa, I have small wrists too, I have to tell you…Bakelite bangles are wonderful because wrists were much smaller in the 50’s and many I find are people getting rid of them because they are too small..So search your heart out sweety!!!Anastasia!!I did it, and I get your approval?? Yay. I would send you a piece, but a rock is what you might receive..hee hee. You all are so great. I love your comments..They make my heart sing…falala-lala
Looks like we were both in the baking mood, huh. I made vanilla cupcakes with vanilla buttercream frosting and strawberries. YUmmylicious!! I still can’t believe it snowed.
oooh citrus buttercake -sooo scrumptous!
I saw Lady in the Water last night and was intriged-Bryce Dallas Howard is soooo perfect for the role of the water nymph. She should have been in Lord of the Rings….
Saw The Illusionist a few weeks ago and it was very good – Paul Giamatti in both this and Lady in the water – he’s such a fantastic actor! Did you see him in Sideways?
Loooooooooooove Bakelite too!
Such delicious goodies!!!!I have a large cameo addiction myself, and a rather large lucite purse collection,I use to carry the purses all the time (pre-babys that is!).Fairy books are big in our house too. I taught my oldest to draw siittng on the couch with the big Brian Froud book opened on our laps. Its almost time to do that with my little flower blossom!
Oh, thank you for the link to the book! One can never have enough faeries in one’s life! 🙂
The cake look luscious! mmmmm! You have inspired me to bake something today…hmmm…perhaps banana bread….
You have some really gorgeous bangles. I especially love the red ones. What a great collection!
Thanks for the comment on the blog toots! Ah yes, snow in most all of AZ…we’re so lucky!! And the bakelite??? I am drooling (not good for the computer though!)
And sometimes I pair the coffee/no food diet…with chocolate…hehehe
I have tagged you creative one!
Oh my goodness! You are truly a bakelite addict. And in every color. I do approve!
But since we are just at the beginning of our bloggy friendship, I think it is best for me to be completely upfront and honest with you –
It’s like this: I am mad with envy about your citrus buttercake. And I confess, if I could, I’d reach through the screen and snatch it away from you. (Okay, I would leave you one slice. sniff.)
Stop by my page and see what I baked on Sunday!
I love Bakelite….I used to be a fine collector of small bits of beauty and vintage jewels…..but all were lost and sold during hard times, but seeing your beautiful bracelets and bangles makes me remember them, thank you Vanessa, for reminding me why I loved them.
we too had our first snow of the season….I painted and ate chocolate covered cherries…so divine.
I’m a huge bakelite devotee as well… can’t get enough of it.
see you, g
I’ll bite. I’m an avid reader and you’ve intrigued me, where can I read more about the Bakelite family? Your collection is gorgeous by the way; thus far all I’ve done is admire specimens from afar as the price always separates us but maybe if I got the word out people would offer Bakelite to me as well? ^_^
