This is Summer…

August always reminds that summer is quickly passing by.

With plump leaves and madly rambling vines.

Wisteria vines grow so fast they lock little side gardens shut with green.

This is summer 12

It seems it happened overnight.

Sealed by vines.

Reminding of Miss Havisham and Paradiso Perduto.

New wisteria blossoms turning up every day this summer.

This is summer 14

Tiers of purple petals.

This is summer 15

That scent, quite like that of a flower shop.

Like a bouquet mixture of all sorts of flowers, all packed into one.

This is summer 11

Ivy crawls around the gypsy wagon.

This is summer 5

As peach season comes to a close.

This is summer 23

I have eaten ever so many hot, ripe, juice running down wrist peaches.

Baking, jam making, peachy peach times!

This is summer 24

Even grilling them.

Drizzled in butter and brown sugar and mint.

How can you go wrong?

This is summer 18

Peach empanadas a plenty.

(hand pies)

This is summer 21

Boxing up and sharing galore.

This is summer 22

Always on a garden stroll, you will be greeted by a zinnia.

Preferably nibbling an empanada on said stroll, just peeking around here and there.

This is summer 7

It doesn't feel like summer to me without zinnias and cosmos and giant dahlias.

Purplest cosmos turned up on their own, thank goodness.

This is summer 8

The mid day scorching sun on summer flowers in the front garden.

This is summer 10

Fall in our neck of the woods brings a spring to the garden.

So hopefully, there will be some rest for these leaves and petals, that so courageously hang on, on these hottest days.

This is summer 9

The veggie garden (below) turned itself  into a flower garden this year, as I have shared.

Literally bursting out the sides of the enclosed veg garden this week.

Graced by gobs of spreading white sage.

One of my most favorite scents on the planet.

This is summer 4

Huge zinnias somehow withstand the massive heat out back in the veggie area.

Coral with pink and yellow, oh my!

This is summer 1

Roses ramble around, shading lil' windows.

This is summer 3

Paper like hollyhocks always make me happy, you?

This is summer 6

And there go the self seeding good guys of late summer.

Heart shaped morning glory vines crawling up the big tree by the gypsy wagon.

This is summer 16

And then…

The pumpkin vines.

Beloved things.

This is summer 20

With bees working away.

Hooray!

This is summer 19

As we eat hot, sweet grilled peaches, with that golden dappled late afternoon sun dancing through the trees.

This is summer 17

This is summer.

I am in the frantic holding on mode of summer.

Even though I have so many autumnal projects going on.

I am being pulled in either direction.

But still desperately in love with summer.

No matter the heat.

Dreaming of another monsoon storm, and the smell of raindrops on dusty desert floor.

Mmmmmm.

What are your loves of summer?

Love, V

Sparkly heart

  1. Kay says:

Peach empanadas! Yum! What a good idea! Love your blog, been reading for yearsssss and lurking. Finally going to start commenting <3 Have a great weekend!

  2. Oh hi there Kay!!! 😉

  3. Oh it is all just so lovely! Thank you for sharing.

  4. Catie says:

Ah, August is my favorite month, so bittersweet. Thanks for sharing your summer loves and those great ideas for peaches!

  5. Karen says:

Boy you’re just writing your little heart out! Something every day. Ms. Havisham, wow one of my favorite books is right here next to me in my bookcase. Are there more than just the one with the hot air balloon? I don’t know. I’ll have to look that up when I’m at work tomorrow at the library.

  6. Betty says:

I love the pictures you posted and can imagine taking a walk and seeing them. I will miss summer too, but looking forward to fall.

  7. Janet Ghio says:

Those grilled peaches look delicious! Lucky you to have your very own peach tree. Peaches are one of the best delights of summer!!

  8. Jude says:

I love summer. I grew up on the Gulf Coast (Florida and Alabama) and never too far from the ocean. I love all your flowers as well. Someitmes, every once in a while, one finds a kindred spirit within the internet sphere. When one is thinking, “I like that. I like that. I like that.” It’s a sure sign and a happy allegiance. I spent a few years in Costa Rica surfing and growing tropical flowers and exotic fruits…which was wonderful and life enriching..but I missed the southern U.S. and it’s sweet flowers..zinnias, cosmos, and all the other flowers of summer. I’m in another transition..getting ready to sell my house and move to smaller digs and I haven’t gardened much this year. I enjoy looking at your posts and dreaming of my next garden.

  9. Miss Linda says:

My favorite part of summer….Hummm…. All of it. I will take the good with the bad. From the humid weather to the hot to the rain… Of course there are always the weird days but…I do love it all. Our winters here in Michigan are oh so bad and long. I would rather be hot than cold.
I love your photos they are all wonderful. Looks like you are the queen of the kitchen and that is wonderful too.

  10. Jude, cheers to kindred spirits!!!
    😉

  11. Miss Linda, I can only imagine how hard it must be to be in a place with
brutal winters. Our winters are relatively mild and I would say
non-existent compared to yours. Although we do get a tinge of snow and a
few freezing days. But when we get snow it lasts 1 or 2 days if you are
lucky. And then it melts and the sun comes back out. As I get older
I find myself not loving the cold like I did as a kid, it feels rotten to be
shivering cold doesnt it? But snow is beautiful and magical. So,
thats the trade off right? 😉

  12. Rachel says:

I can’t believe that August is here already, I’m the same as you, looking forward to the Autumn but still wanting to hold on to as much of the summer as possible.
Oh I do wish we were neighbours, I’d be more than happy for you to bring round some peach pies! :0(

  13. Rachel says:

Whoops, that was supposed to be a smiley face not a big nosed sad face! 😉

  14. But hte big nose sad face was adorbs 😉 (my sis hates when I say
    adorbs, haha!)

  15. Heidi Anderson says:

Beautiful, gorgeous, those peaches made my mouth water!!! Yuuuummmm!! I know your empanadas are a family secret, but can you suggest any dough that may be good to try? <3
    Thanks for being you! Xo

  16. Heidi Anderson says:

Ps I love what Kay said… I too peek in all the time for inspiration and joy. You have a lot of loves and lurkers- even if we don’t comment all the time 😉 I am trying to leave notes more often though.. you’ve made such a wonderful world for us kindreds! <3

  17. So jealous of your peach tree and beautiful Wisteria – two things that would never survive over here. I would love a wisteria pergola over our patio, and to be able to make my own peach pies and preserves.

  18. Oh lawdy, yum…I love grilled peaches in butter & brown sugar. I use a similar recipe but I’ve never had mint on mine, so I’ll have to try it. Also, it’s particularly delicious when served over French vanilla ice cream.
Your garden is lovelier than usual, especially the Hollyhocks. The only thing in my yard that’s withstanding the horrible heat & humidity are the Hibiscus, Yellow Bells, and the Tibouchina tree. My wildflower garden came and went, too quickly I might add. I’d hoped to see a riotous explosion of color throughout the entire summer, but I expected too much. Nature will have her way no matter what, lol.

  19. Sis, your garden always makes me green with envy! Pun intended! HAHA!
Hand over the empanadas and no one gets hurt…

  20. Jenn says:

I am being torn between autumn and summer projects too! I have been loving sitting in the gazebo by the lake, and watching the sunset. It is unlike any other sunset, that one in August.

  21. I have enjoyed this summer too. It has all kind of flowed together since early April, the same kind of hot weather for five months, but it has been good! I have had too many projects in my craft room and haven’t known where to begin. There has been an ornament art ‘exchange’ I need to tend to with another gal, we are both in the same boat! Busy!Busy!Busy! But I’d rather be busy and enjoying myself and enjoying the sun while it shines!
The wisteria is one of my favorite blooming vines. It is so breathtaking and beautiful. I would love to surround myself with the blossoms and wear it like a dress! Whimsical Me! Then I could dance at midnight with the fairies in my flower dress. If only!
Ahhh! Your peaches! What a divine cook you are, the photos of the empanadas look delicious! And I am sure the grilled peaches are ‘to die for!’ Yummm!
You have kept such a very lovely running of blog posts this past week it has been all such wonderful ‘eye candy’.
    Totally blissful!!!
    love
    Miss Teresa

  22. Linnea-maria says:

Wow, grilled peaches! That looks tasty!

  23. Misha, thank you for saying that about the garden. I feel like it’s a mad unruly wreck this year, so you saying it looks better than ever makes me change my perception and give it a break, hahahaha!!

  24. m says:

Everytime I come here, I go “MMMMMMM!”
Must go cook something amazing now…

  25. I love the look of vines curling over fences! I love Wisteria! And of course Paradiso Perduto! The colours in that movie of Great Expectations!
I never cease to be amazed at the oasis you have created in the desert!

  26. Pinksterita says:

I,m in Nebraska, heart of the nation, visiting my family farms an ole cowboy relatives.
Firefly’s and ladies with up do’s, antiques and corn and cows and horses.
Such fun with the ole west store fronts.
Just saw the weather report for Arizona and I am
Praying you all are ok! Lots of rain there and flooding.
I hope it all passed without damage to your paradise.
    xo

  27. Oh dear friend, if only we would get some massive downpours. Thank
you for thinking of us xoxo We had a couple storms, but nothing crucial, I
am also on a hill. I hope I get some torrents of water….. My
garden would be so happy 🙂 Havea wonderful time !!! Have
    some corn for me 😉
