Thankfulness

Thanksgiving madness (of the good variety) is in full force around here…

Thanks 24

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, I am almost certain you are in the throws of the same madness.

I have been baking like crazy.

Doing all my vegetable chopping for tomorrow.

Roasting homegrown Fairytale pumpkins.

Pureeing them.

Draining them.

(love this sort of pumpkin ritual)

Baking with them.

Getting all my ducks in order for tomorrow.

I am throwing a tiny bash.

With a handful of special friends.

I am so excited to see some of my dear friends.

Thanks 19

My friend Joyce and I have been e-mailing each other like mad.

All excited to get together.

This is my 3rd year hosting my own Thanksgiving, and I really love it.

Having people you enjoy over at your home.

Good food, good friends, laughing, sharing tales.

So excited.

Thanks 23

Plus, it forces you to clean your house.

Bonus.

Thanks 21

Dusting.

Music.

Pre-holiday fun.

Warm house.

Oven working away.

Amazing scents.

Thanks 20

Taking some last treats from the garden.

As autumn creeps in.

Still trying in the desert land, to find its way to us.

It will be 79'F tomorrow.

The yellowing ground is slowly creeping in to the vegetable garden out back.

Thanks 6

It's been so warm.

We had 1 little freeze, but covered things.

Although some things did crisp up.

Others are hanging on, still.

Thanks 4

Birds chirping.

Matty chasing them around.

Thanks 5

Thanks 7

A huge surge of tomatoes happened in early autumn, but as nights are chilly, I have decided to start using green tomatoes, just in case they don't ripen.

Thanks 1

There were about 150 green tomatoes out there.

I boiled some with yellow chilies, and made a green tomato salsa.

(with onions, garlic, olive oil and a tinge of white vinegar + salt)

I drizzled it over baked tilapia, with some avocado.

Lemon.

Yumm.

Then, I used the green tomato salsa as a base for black/kidney bean soup.

Yumm.

Thanks 2

I gifted some for fried green tomatoes, and we still have oodles plus.

It's an autumnal treat really.

Before the cold snap hit for one night last week, I brought in two wagons of gourd love.

Thanks 3

Some are still hanging around out there, but they have climbed into the trees too high, and will have to fall out.

Beautiful sunsets.

Miles in autumn light.

His human dad is holding a treat.

Hence the intense face.

Thanks 9

Pecans in our pecan trees.

Thanks 10

Picking them with my Matty, handsome helper.

Thanks 8

Little piles.

Delicious pecans.

Thanks 13

Our last pomegranate of the season.

Thanks 14

Wisteria on the front porch is turning, and looks so festive and pretty.

Thanks 15

And then.

Just like that, over the last few days, the pecan trees turned golden.

Thanks 16

As the peach tree follows…

Thanks 17

So pretty.

Changing leaves.

Thanks 18

Everyone who sings and plays an instrument will bring theirs tomorrow.

Guitars.

Piano.

My sister is horrified that Lovee lets me use his microphone and one of his amps.

🙂

Thanks 22

The pumpkin cheesecakes are cooling.

As are the traditional pumpkin pies.

The edges of the pumpkin cheesecakes always get too dark, even if I cover them.

But it doesn't change the flavor at all.

Delicious.

Sinful.

Thanks 26

I have my dishes out, ready to set the long table.

Mister Lovee's grandparents' table.

I found it tucked into one of our sheds a couple years ago, and was thrilled.

I brought it in the house right away.

It's very mid-century, maple colored wood.

All handmade, beautifully.

With extender leaves.

Which we always leave open.

It touches me, to use this table.

Thanks 25

The big turkey is thawed.

I can't wait to put it in the oven in the a.m.

Taking today to make and bake let me really soak in the taste of the season.

I am always so very thankful.

A special day to be extra thankful, bonus.

The most special thing about this Thanksgiving?

My baby is turning 2.

Born November 22, 2010

To Chief and Daisy.

Adopted by us when he was 5 weeks old.

King Miles of the Santa Catalinas.

I love Miles and Matty so much.

So so so so so so much.

Miles has brought us such joy.

Words can not describe my love for this fur.

Thanks 11

I turned around yesterday, and saw him sleeping with his hedgehog facing me like that.

You should have seen me.

Quietly and frantically scrambling, trying to get my camera together.

Thanks 12

Remember him here?

Oh, my heart.

This morning Lovee and I watched some home movies of baby Miles.

Miles and Matty wrestled in the background.

Miles would stop every so often and look at himself on the screen.

Perplexed and interested.

He was such a beautiful round baby.

And such a nice and loving big baby.

Miles Baby

Thankfulness abound.

Thank you for being here.

Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, I wish you the most glorious day.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Love,

Vanessa, Mister Lovee, Matty and Miles

Sparkly heart

    Vanessa:
I am so unusually misty eyed tonight. Missing my mom and dad on this Thanksgiving Eve. I still use my mom’s hand written recipes for holiday meals and tonight….I just feel her absence.
Seeing the photos of Miles when he was a baby made me smile. Cry a little too, but smile mostly! I needed that.
I hope you and your fantabulous family have a spectacular Thanksgiving. You give so much joy to everyone. Thank you for all you do for this odd-ball, fantastic art-blog community!
Love you to and your family.

P.S. I would give you a million dollars for a bushel of those green tomatoes. Well….I would if I had a million dollars.
I went out looking at all the grocery stores today for a few green tomatoes and not one store had a single green one. I am craving fried green tomatoes for Thanksgiving, but alas ~ I shall have to make due with dressing and mashed potatoes. 🙁

    Beautiful glasses, and beautiful gourds!

  4. Sarah H. says:

What a beautiful post, Vanessa. I needed to read this today. Happy Happy Thanksgiving to you and your entourage. I’m missing my own loud, drama-filled, obnoxious family so very much today. Hubby and I barely even celebrate any holidays since moving down here to the Bahamas. As I puttered around in the kitchen this morning, though, I took comfort knowing that at that moment my sister in Missouri is probably starting coffee too. So is my Momma in WV. The act of preparing food for people you love is a comforting, soulful ritual, the value of which just can’t be emphasized enough. Thank you for opening your home to all of us and letting us join in your Thanksgiving Day rituals. Blessings!

  5. Emalina says:

  21. Miss Linda says:

This was such a very beautiful post. All your words made me smile, as so did the photos. We had a very quiet day with good food and good words. Most of our family is gone to a world of their own..We think of them often with fun memories and of coure a wonderful toast to all, sheding a few tears but recalling memories that make us laugh…I can tell you had a wonderful day, and more happy days ahead.
Our weather has changed…65 on thanksgiving but when I took my fury ones out at 6 it was 30.
Thank you for all you do.

  22. Fairytale Pumpkins, the very thought of it jumped off the page into my heart and I knew this was a delightful place to visit on Thanksgiving Day. Wishing you a life time of fairytale moments!

  23. Meg says:

Even though the official Thanksgiving holiday here comes early in October (on the 8th this year – my parents’ wedding anniversary!), one day a year simply isn’t enough. I think it’s both joyful and important to take every opportunity to celebrate all the wonderfulness I’ve been gifted with in my life and I’m perfectly happy to jump on the November Thanksgiving bandwagon as well!
It’s a day late, I know, but I actually have today off, so Molly (my 4-legged calico girl) and I are spending some quality time this morning, and then I’m visiting with friends & family this afternoon.
    Vanessa, Happy Thanksgiving!
I hope you had a super time, with so many blessings that counting them all will keep you busy until you have to start all over again next year.
Thank you for yet another magical post, and for sharing so much of who you are with us.
And a big fat happy birthday to the fabulous Miles! 😀
    Meg

  24. Kelly says:

Beautiful pictures!!! What a treasure a lovely table a family heirloom to celebrate your Thanksgiving feast! Sounds like you had a wonderful gathering and delicious eats!!!
Thanks for sharing Vanessa!!! Happy B-day to MAGNIFICENT MILES! What a cutie pie!
    Hugs to you All!

  25. I’m so happy you’ve had a lovely Thanksgiving this year! Ours was nice, though bittersweet as it’s the first holiday without my beloved father.in.law and a little sad/awkward because mom couldn’t eat much (because her stroke earlier this year affected her ability to do so), but, given what hurricane sandy did to our beloved state of NJ just a few weeks ago, we are so thankful we, right here, fared well!

  26. Laura says:

    The gourds look perfect!
Happy 2 years with the family, you lucky, LUCKY boy!
    Seriously…could a dog have a better life?

  27. stephanie says:

oh Ms Fanciful! What a lovely Thanksgiving you had…all the trimmings. Your babies crack me up…as we scramble for the camera too, so often, to catch these amazing little creatures just being.
ThankFULL for your inspiration and creativity to make me smile!
    x…x

  28. I’m back-reading a few days later and seeing the wonderful preparations for your Thanksgiving Day feast, and I have to say that it all looks beautiful and tasty; especially the green tomato’s…yum! My Grandma used to make us fried green tomato’s. Your words bring back good memories.
This year I was very blessed to vacation in the Blue Ridge Mtns with Sean’s family. We celebrated an early holiday with them, and then turned around and drove to my Madre’s place for “Turkey Day”. I’m so thankful to have all of this love surrounding me.
