Summer Daze {+ Blog Talk Radio & Me}

It is hot.  Very very hot.  Although, for the first time – in a long time, the summer heat hasn't felt that bad.  (Okay, yesterday's heat is forcing me to take back that statement)

Hot summer day 8

I am on super duper little dog duty

Watching stitches.

Painting, while he sleeps under my feet.

Hot summer day 21

Making sure there is no licking involved.

Applying medicine every few hours.

I have been Matty's butler for 5 days now.

2 more to go.

Hot summer day 7

Time seems to stop, in the height of heat, in the middle of summer, while I play nanny.

Hot summer day 6

I could put the cone around his neck, to keep him from licking (although he has been very good – btw – he got neutered).  But I think to myself, life goes by so fast.  Always busy busy busy.

Why not just be?

I mean, if I have the opportunity, to just be.  To just breathe.

Why not just watch him heal?

Hot summer day 18

And so, I decided that was just what I would do beginning last Friday.

So, here we are.

Me and my little dog.

Attached at the hip.

On the swing, on a short walk, in the house, watching each other.

Hot summer day 1

Then I think, this is what Mom's do (Mom's rock).  When Baby was ill, I didn't mind hand feeding her for 1 hour.  Getting full of mud to help her.  I didn't mind stopping everything I was doing to be there for her.  She needed me, and I didn't think twice about letting her need me.

And now, little Matty needs me.  I don't mind that my mind is exploding with creativity and I want to turn up my music, and paint.

I love him.

Love wins.

Hot summer day 5

We swing.

Well, I swing, and he stands with his feet in his pool watching me, watch him.

He never sits in the water, so I don't have to worry about his stitches.

I  blow bubbles into the sky…

Dreaming…

Hot summer day 9

Feeling like we are in a slow cook oven.

Feeling dizzy.

It is supposed to be around 107' F.

It feels more like the temperature reads in the sun…

Hot summer day 4

Popsicles.

Hot summer day 2

Back and forth, swinging in thick air…

Hot summer day 3

Feeling woozy…

Hot summer day 15

Watching a quail looking down at me through a tree.

Trying to take her picture…

Dropping camera, getting bonked on the head while it takes a picture, then catching it before it hits the ground, phew…

Hot summer day 16

All the while, Quail gal watches…

Hot summer day 12

I make myself more than dizzy, in the heat, hanging upside down, looking at her, while I swing.

Quail, tree, quail tree, quail tree, is all I see….

Hot summer day 11

Hello Quail.

Hot summer day 14

Life, in a bubble, in time…

Hot summer day 10

However, our outside fun is short lived, as the air conditioning beckons us back inside.

I suppose I best go finish my chores.  We have a nice house-guest.  Me and a house full of boys, of the furry and human variety.  Odd indeed.  At least they all sing and play guitar.  Sans the furry one, that is.

I know I shared the video below 2+ years ago, but, the tune does go with my hot summer on the swing feelings today (plus, I heart Dustin O'Halloran)…

How do you keep cool in summer?  I have been making giant jars of lemonade. But good lemonade, not sour non-fun lemonade.  And, I always hose myself off about 10 times a day if I am outside (or jump in my outdoor shower/tub).  I was a swimmer my whole life and I adore the water (I always had a pool, alas, no pool in the country), so I am itching for a swim like you wouldn't believe.  Mister said we could build a pool out here, but it wouldn't be ready until fall or later.  We'll see…

That, and he might make me dig it myself 😉

Oh oh, I almost forgot…

Before I go sneak in some painting time, which I am hysterically itching for, I wanted to tell you that…

Hot summer day 22

Sunday I will be on Blog Talk Radio.  Interviewed on a fun show called Artistically Speaking.  And, from what I hear, you can possibly join a chat room and ask questions, or call in.  Isn't that scary as heck? 😉

Here are all the details.

It should be mad fun!

Will you join me?

I'll send you the most gigantikist dessert from anywhere in the world, your choice (of the imaginary variety, of course, but still), if you join me.

Hot summer day 24

I promise 😉

Hot summer day 25

Mmmm, hot fudge, brownies, vanilla frosting, cherry bites, sprinkles…

Hot summer day 23

I know you want a bite.  Don't you?

Okay, off I go, must check on furry boy.

I will share more details about call in and live chat for Sunday, as I find out.

Warmest!!

🖤 ,V

ps:  My friend Dick (Mister's life-long friend and band mate) just popped over to give me a gift.  The New Sting Symphonicities CD, out today (yesterday when I wrote this).  If you love symphony + Sting, the subtle intro to Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, will give you chills – the whole song has a romantic film feel.  I have been listening to it as I type.  Oh oh and, Englishman in New York, swooon!  I am really enjoying it.

  1. Theresa says:

Dear Vanessa, what a lovely post. I’m so happy you are well. It’s good to stay with Matty and care for him while he heals. What a sweet furry boy – give him an extra nuzzle from me, please. I must admit I don’t do well in the extreme heat – well, extreme humidity, really. But lemonade sounds wonderful! I have some lemons, so I need to make some – I think. And many congratulations to you on your upcoming Blog Talk Radio feature! How EXCITING!!! And if you are to promise me something that delicious, I will board a plane (setting all my fears aside) and join you personally! LOL Yum!
Enjoy your weekend with your love and sweet baby boy! xoxo Theresa

  2. Kim says:

    Vanessa….
Matty must be a trooper! I can’t imagine having itchy stitches in this heat. Poor little guy. How lucky he is to have you by his side, and that you are allowing him to heal without that terrible cone on his head!
I feel for you in this heat. We’re not quite as hot as Arizona, but we’re at almost 100 degrees today. HAD to turn on the air conditioner. I’m grateful that we have it, but I surely would rather have a cool breeze whispering in through open windows. That won’t happen until way into October! :O
Congratulations on your Blog Talk Radio feature. I am marking my calendar.
    xoxoxoxo

  3. GG Pinkster says:

Thanks so much- I needed this post. My big furry boy went in for major surgery on the 12th of July and will be resting at home with constant care (no licking) for 18 days. Now I do not feel so alone…I’m reading and dreaming and watching little birds flutter around the garden in pairs, lost in their love.
Give ole Matty a pat fur me.

  4. How fun!! Will listen. Will also have that dessert, thank you very much!
Sweden is quite warm at the moment and I love it! I’ve found myself wanting cool drinks though (I usually crave coffee and tea or just plain water) and discovered that I don’t own an ice cube tray. Well, this entire country is like an ice cube tray a big part of the year.
    However, I cooked something up:
    http://blog.afiori.com/2010/07/cool-summer-tip-ett-coolt-sommartips.html
Easiest “recipe” ever! And delicious too, especially when they start to “melt”.

  5. devil mood says:

Oh the heat, how do I survive? I really don’t, I feel like a mollusk out of water, I can’t do anything, I can’t think. Bathing helps, it’s the only thing that really helps for a while. How about one of those portable swimming pools? There are some quite nice in size.
Good luck with your interview!! And thank you for another wonderful post.

  6. Sarah says:

It is just the right thing to do, watching Matty heal. He will be fine I am sure with you looking after him! I like the quail-I put a drawing of a girl in a gaarden on my blog tonight and something about the quail and the tree around her looks like it! The heat has gone here a bit and it is now muggy and a bit stormy. I hope the sun comes back soon!
Your show sounds fun. I think I will miss it as I am out on a crafty day on Sunday. I wonder, will it be somewhere to listen to later?
Sending healing wishes to Matty. x

  7. Karen G says:

Time seemed to stand still for me as I read, you swang (oh that is SO not a word!), you swung (nope…not this one either), you blew bubbles….bubbles are the great equalizer in life, aren’t they?! If you’re down, they bring you up. If you’re up, they help mellow you down. Love me some sweet, round, shiny, colorful, happy bubbles.
If it were 107 degrees here, I would be in an ice shower while Hubby & the kidlets drink their ice tea that they make on hot days….they use orange tea, a berry zinger, and some chai all combined to make an ice tea that they all love. Me, not so much. I prefer clean, crisp, ice cold ice water.
Stay cool, if you can….sending Matty speedy recovery vibes! :>

  8. Sue Twigge says:

I hope that Matty is soon past the itching stage and on the mend…107 degrees I’d just have to stay indoors with the air conditioning on permanently…thank goodness you have it,else the heat would just be TOO MUCH.But your home made lemonade sounds delicious and i’m sure will cool you down…congrats on speaking on blog talk radio,Sue xx

  9. Yummm!
The popsicle looks refreshing! It’s hot here in California too. It’s even hot all over Europe, I was told by a Brit friend who is living in Germany. She said it is 35c degrees.
I know that is above 100 Farenheigt. (Darn! I can’t spell according to my computer).
I luuuvvv the bubbles!!!! Sometimes, in the evening, just for whimsy, I will purposely make bubbles come out of my Palmolive Liquid Dish detergent if I squeeze the bottle just right, lots of tiny bubbles will fill my kitchen…ah blissful magical bubbles! It some how lightens my day.
Radio!!! How lovely that you will be on a blog talk radio!!
Here’s cheers to you, dear Miss Vanessa!
    from Miss Teresa
P.S. Hope Matty is back to his romping around soon.

  10. Linda Diane says:

I loved your “lazy hazy crazy days of summer” post! So glad Matty is doing OK. My daughter had her 2 dogs neutered recently at the same time, and she entertained me with many funny, adventurous stories about dogs vs. head cones.
Also, I loved the picture of that quail! Oh, I do wish I had a Popsicle right now . . . . Congrats on that upcoming blog radio interview!

  11. Krista Komis says:

I loved this post. Bubbles and a carefree day. Sometimes the best summer days (despite the heat) are days spent just relaxing, soaking up the sun and breathing in the fresh air.
It’s been in the upper 80’s low 90’s here in MN, but with the ridiculous humidity it feels like 100 sometimes.
I too love swimming…my family jokes that I’m a mermaid. I feel like a fish out of water (literally) each summer, I crave diving into a big pool and just swimming, swimming swimming allll day. 🙂

  12. LIsa Hodge says:

    Vanessa,
You take the most lovely photos! That quail probably appreciated your company 🙂 I have a hummingbird feeder on my porch that I watch out my studio window. The hummers are good little entertainers! They fight and bicker right in front of the window and I do enjoy their company!!
I too have to watch my girl, Gracie. She was spade last Thursday and I’ve had my hands full as her fur baby sister didn’t understand why they couldn’t run and play. She is much better now and they can go at it again. Her stitches come out Friday and she is pain free and back to her good sweet self once again. Next month it is Bella’s turn. She is a bundle of spunk so keeping her still will be quite the challenge!
Enjoy your summer and those Popsicle!!
    Have a good evening!
    Lisa

  13. Marilyn says:

So much is happening on your hot day. I love bubbles, popsicles, little dogs to love and care for, lemonade too. Add tall glasses full of very cold ice tea and lots of ice.

  14. kj says:

i am here, too, caring for my recovering old soul-dog stella. it is a privilege for sure.
i’ve been thinking of you. i wonder if baby and my rosie have met? i think so.
i would delight to hear your voice. so i’m working on it.
love to you, vanessa. you are a pied piper giving all that love away.
    kj

  15. Laura S. says:

I’m glad Matty has such a good nurse! I’m sure he has been a good nurse to you too – helping you heal. Sending hugs from Kentucky to both of you!

  16. I love your posts, your GLORIOUS photos and……..BUBBLES! Bubbles are the best! How imaginative to take a photo of them, I never thought of that, but should have…….lovely post, thank you so much!

  17. Alia says:

I know what you mean about the water thing. I love it. I was sad to move away from Oregon because I can visit the ocean there, but it super cold so you can’t swim too much. At least here in AZ I have a pool I can swim in, yay! I have been out there almost every day. I actually like the heat quite a bit though. I want to be warm all the time! (you can’t do that in OR) It is pretty much the reason I chose to go to grad school here. Okay this comment is starting to ramble so I will stop now. Congrats on the blog talk radio, I will definitely try to tune in!

  18. Oh my that’s H-O-T V!! So glad you have Popsicles and AC inside to retreat to. Hope your head didn’t get a bruise as well (I have done that myself, tee hee 😉 Blog Talk Radio sounds fun…off to see more details and hope I can make it!
    Jamie 🙂

  19. karin says:

I was interviewed on a show on blog talk radio a few months ago, it was fun! It is called Art and Soul Radio. The women who interviewed me passed the show along to someone else now but I loved the experience.
I talked about my love for vintage jewelry and taking old bits and making them into something new. Enjoy yourself!
I moved out of Arizona a month and a half ago. I do not miss that heat at all! Austin, Texas is the place to be. 🙂
    Stay cool sweet Vanessa!

  20. Great shots!These are really lovely photos..I enjoyed viewing it!…soo cool,thanks…

  21. SueAnn says:

It has been hot, hot, hot here too!! And I love it…though I must admit that my air conditioned home is where I spend most of my time. In my studio…cool and comfy! Ha!
And Matty sounds like he is being such a good patient! He is such a good boy!
That dessert looks scrumdumdelicious!!! I will definitely join you!! Thanks ever so much!
    Have fun on Blog Radio!
    Hugging you
    SueAnn

  22. Marjorie says:

Oh, I hope your dearie heals soon. 🙂 Your the bestest pup mum ever, methinks!
And..Blog Talk Radio!! eeeeeeeep! Very Exciting indeed….and yes…scary as heck, too! At least it would be for little old me!! Best wishes and have a bundle of fun, I know you’ll do amazingly!!! What a treat for everyone who tunes in!! 🙂

  23. Teri says:

Can I just live your life for one day? It does look rather hot where you are, I am not ever going to complain about 90 degrees again!!! I love how little Miss Quail is tilting her head to look back at you. She looks very comfortable with you. As always… your photos are so beautiful and peaceful. Thank you!

  24. Miss Linda says:

I am so glad that you and your fury boy is doing well. We all need time to heal. I live in Michigan and it was 97 the other day. Very humid…that is normal. I applaud all your photos…Thank you for sharing

  25. Deborah says:

Madly in love with the bubble photos!!! They are so happy. I just gained 3 ounces looking at your treats! We have reached that point where there is no cool time of the day. I think I saw my garden fairies hiding in the house to cool down. **blows kisses** Deb

  26. Shell says:

The way to keep cool for me is to take 5 showers a day, have a spray bottle in the frig ice cold ready to use, dress light and have lots of ice cream in the house.
Those sweets look delish..sending kisses to you and Matty.

  27. teresa says:

Oh how lucky handsome boy Matty is!
To have Miss Vanessas’ undivided devoted unconditional love and attention!
Doogan had an awful time when he got _______….shhhh….that’s a hurtful word!
He licked and licked and licked!
So as sad as it is to say…he did come home with that HUGE gigantic CONE on his little neck!
I was so sorry for him!
He looked like a SPACE creature…and was so disoriented!
He didn’t wear that crazy thing very long!
Give Mr. Matty a snuggle from us!
    ANd stay cool my Sweetness!
I just adore how you wear your little gowns and dresses around in the yard!
Maybe you and Mr. Matty should come up here and visit Doogan and I …where it is cool and bright and sunny…but cool! I love it here in the Northwest!
Kisses being blown to Baby at night.
For I just know she is up there with so many of my fur-babies romping about in the starry night!
gotta pop over and check out this exciting news about YOU on the radio!
I can’t think of many things more exciting than that!
    happy Night Sweetpea!
    xoxoxoxoxo

  28. teresa says:

    p.s.
I signed up for an email reminder of your blog talk!
Is this on the radio…or computer…or what sweetpea!
    I don’t wanna miss it…that’s for sure!
    xo

  29. Elizabeth says:

Only 93 degrees in Chi-town. With the humidity figured in the heat index was 103. Now add to this equation no air in a car that’s been cookin’ all afternoon in the parking lot at work….that heavenly outdoor shower of yours is coveted by me today.
Cheers Matty! You’ll be good as new in no time. There is a big love in your environment and we know that nothing heals like love.

  30. Melissa! says:

Just Be…a lovely idea. I remind myself often, thank you for the reminder, too 🙂

  31. waterrose says:

OH, I can’t believe how hot it is! We are leaving for the Colorado mountains next week and I can’t wait to put my feet in the snow…I may have to take my shoes off… Get that pool going dear…swimmming is just the best!

  32. Di Overton says:
