Rainy Day Oranges

It's a rainy dark day in the desert.

I looove rainy days, they add such a different mood in the land of sun.

Time for snuggling with mystery novels.

Orange season 1

The trees in both the city and country are full of oranges.

So many oranges I have not even made a dent.

Even though I've been using them daily.

I feel so lucky and grateful for them.

I normally have fresh orange juice everyday so this is perfect.

Just as with tomatoes and other home garden grown fruits and vegetables, there really is nothing like the sweetness and freshness of these oranges and lemons.

Even the skins are sweet.

The flavors are so robust and full when you eat homegrown goodies.

I've made my first batch of candied orange peels and they've already been gobbled up.

Orange season 2

I know there is nothing worse than flash in photos or dark photos lit by lamps…

But, it's all we've got for today.

Lamp lit rooms.

Freshness on a grey day.

Orange season 5

Last weekend I invented a new cookie recipe.

I also made a huge sugar mistake that made me change it even more.

Somehow I put in 4 cups of sugar instead of 1.5, haha!

I was majorly multitasking and lost track of reality.

So then I added two extra eggs and more orange juice and shaved rind.

And another cup of flour.

I saved the dough in the end and it turned out to be a good mistake.

They are super chewy days later.

The ones cooked until extra golden brown (not pictured) got super crunchy though, so there are two options.

I topped them with a lemon drizzle.

Orange and lemon sugar cookies.

I'll make them again to test and then share the recipe.

Orange season 3

The infusement of oranges has hit the winter spot.

Orange season 6

They make me so happy.

I always look forward to orange season in winter.

So fun.

Chomp!

Orange season 4

Seems I'm the only one who loves this weather though.

Sulky sulky.

Although, truth be told, he's very cozy and seems happy as a lark.

So, I think he's just watching the rain fall and not sulking.

Orange season 9

Tea and flowers, oh my.

Two of my favorite things.

Orange season 7

Yesterday was very rainy and dark too.

I decided to deep clean & dust the house whilst binge watching The Jinx on Amazon.

(with the HBO add-on)

There's a part of me that is drawn to crime shows, I don't know why.

I have to be in the mood, but I'm sure I get it from my dad.

So of course I had to keep watching until the end as it was a documentary series.

The end was, well, it was verrrry interesting.

So I was up into the wee hours of the night.

Then somehow, I got in a bidding war for an antique painting on Ebay at midnight.

I'm not sure what's worse…

Insane late night bidding on Ebay or someone binge eating at 2 a.m. in front of the light of the fridge, haha!

Thank goodness I haven't done that since late night partying in college.

Have you done either? Do tell!

The worst part is, after I paid too much for this painting that I'm not sure I even really wanted (oops), I read some bad reviews about the seller that were hidden in there, zoikkks! Haha! I guess I deserve it. Who knows what I'll be receiving. Luckily I'm laughing about it.

We'll see next week.

Isn't it wrong that an antiques addict can be allowed to shop from her phone at any hour?!

It's not right I tell ya 😉

Oh my, sooo funny!

Anywho, it's a lovely grey day.

Which I will revel in as 104' degree weather is not forgotten yet.

So, I'm in heaven in this grey rain.

Please sun go away for a couple more days.

Summer will be back again soon enough, so for now I enjoy.

It's perfect weather for sprinkling seeds for spring.

Which I normally do during winter rains.

I hope you are doing quite grand out there.

I need to install an app so I can chat with you via comments in an easier fashion.

I think I'll look into that today.

See you soon!

Love, V

See you soon a fanciful twist 300px

ps:

Here's a video of our citrus trees I had posted on Instagram last week.

Although it looks better if you view it over there.

pps:

The Christmas tree market is still open and they had a bunch of HUGE pumpkins for pennies.

I had to buy this gigantic Rouge Vif D'Etampes.

Aka Cinderella Pumpkin.

It weights much more than Matty (who weighs 37lbs.)

Orange season 8

Isn't he so happy to be in the pic?

I just have to be careful because the rabbits in my garden have figured out how to eat pumpkins.

You should see them.

It's quite hilarious to watch a giant pumpkin slowly disappear.

  1. Renee says:

Lucky you. The oranges look wonderful. Oranges are one of my favorite fruits. The cookies sound great.
I hope the picture arrives and is better than you expected.

  2. Jane K says:

I love how you make grey days bright Vanessa and I love that vase in the 3rd picture down in blues and oranges, a real touch of summer on a wet day. The cookies look yummy, I’ll keep an eye out for the recipe and then try how they turn out using gluten free flour. I tried to make a gluten free sponge the other day and it turned out almost as flat as a pancake but as you say mistakes are often just another way of making interesting discoveries. I found my sponge was just perfect when used at the bottom of a sherry trifle.

  3. Rhonda Roo says:

Matty: “Mooooommmm why I gotta pose with a big ol pumpkin in January? Couldn’t you at least let me take a pic with one that has a rabbit attached to it? Geesh!”
(Um yes that accent is for real…Matty has some southern blood in him, I can tell by hims wuvwee cheekbones. 😉 )
I’m not a cookie person but those sound deelish!
I have this vision of a Norman Rockwell painting of a girl seen by the light of the fridge, food in one hand, ipad opened to an Ebay bidding war in the other! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!
The pics are dreamy in no matter what light. Yay Veevala and (insert Veevala’s new camera’s name here) !! WOOT!! xoxoxviiirlrlr roostah

    Hello there,
Well you are not the only one who adores rainy days, they are my absolute favorite. There is nothing like a rainy day at home, all snuggled in. Enjoy every second of it. Your cookies look So Good*** I wish we can grow oranges here in CT. I do have a lemon tree in my sun room and it gives me lemons every year. Not nearly as many as you get though, we only get a few 🙂
    happy day/weekend

  5. First of all…..absolutely jealous that you have orange trees, you lucky duck!!!! Also, I always do that on Ebay…I get caught up in getting the item and realize the seller has bad reviews – bah!!! It’s been raining a lot in Maryland….I’m ready for some sunshine or at least give me some snow!!! Let us know if you get that painting, would love to see how it looks!

  6. We had orange and lemon trees when we lived in Scottsdale and I miss them so! Such a lovely post for a gray winter’s day (it’s been gray here today, too).
    Have a great weekend!

  7. waterrose says:

Looks like you will have your wish for a few days of grey skies… I love it too! Especially on a weekend when I can just relax, sew, take naps… lovely!

  8. Cyndie Crow Brown says:

Dearest Dbl V,How delightful!!!Back to back posts.Eye Candy as usual. Can’t wait to see “the” painting.Must be something for our VV to lose control. The ORANGES…I cannot even imagine,to go out, pick an orange,n eat it.YUM!!!Sooo,do u ship,by any chance?!!!!……

  9. I love reading your blogs and admiring your photos…oranges, flowers & tea – what a lovely combination on a rainy day! Have you ever shared your recipe for candied orange peel? That is a childhood favorite that is hard to find anymore. Thanks for adding a little sparkle to my day.

  10. Misha/DawaiOser says:

Hahahaha…grumpy Matty. He grouses like an old man, same annoyed but tolerating features and I love it.
It’s also raining in Florida, but we’re about to go into the rainy season and it lasts for months. I don’t complain though as I like rainy days. Not MONSOON kind, but a decent drizzle while (like you) I putter around inside, baking, reading, watching movies and whatnot. Speaking of movies, have you seen “A Monster Calls” with Liam Neeson doing the voice of the Monster? Oh my gosh, it was so good and sad too. I cried my eyes out. The art work was phenomenal and true to the original graphic novel. I can’t tell you anymore but grab it one afternoon when you need something to blow out the emotional pipes. Whew/brutal.
Mmmm…oranges and other citrus such as lemon are my favorites. Just between the two of us and I know that what I’m saying is horrible for my state (Florida) but I prefer California oranges the best. Wonder what your oranges taste like and how they differ in variety?

  11. Jen says:

Oh my gosh! Matty! I’m laughing so hard at that picture, and then, you’re comment doesn’t he look happy…lol I was, and still am, quite a bore in college. No partying at all. Just study study study. So serious I was. My orange tree didn’t produce but maybe an armful of fruit this year. Can’t figure out why. They were delicious though. Those cookies sound very yummy! I love chewy cookies! I’ll look forward to the recipe! xoxoxo Jen

  12. Linda Diane. says:

Oh, those oranges are sooo beautiful! I’m glad you were able to salvage your cookie recipe with a bit of creativity. I do hope that the painting you won will end up being just what you’d hoped for. We would love to get a peek at it when it arrives, if you are willing to share!

  13. Dorcas says:

Orange and lemon sugar cakes are just so good. The juice is also very unique
