I have just completed a little drawing on these rainy wonderful days.
It's my take on the house in the movie Practical Magic.
I had quite a time figuring out if I wanted to draw the frontscape as you see above, or the back of the house that we see often in the film.
I finally settled on the front, and taken by a whim of inspiration, drew it up one night at about 2 a.m.
It is now a print offered in two sizes in my shop right here.
8" x 10" as well as a larger size, 12" x 16"
When I was in real estate I used to do the elevation drawings for all of the houses I sold for a private builder of luxury homes.
I enjoyed it quite a lot, so I have been drawing buildings once again.
With my own little whimsical twist.
Quirky as they might be, much like the drawer it seems.
Drawing in pen is uber exciting because you only get one chance.
I did my shading in pencil.
I forget how much I love drawing.
Life takes you in so many other busy directions.
And of course, I have my sticky little fingers in every pot in the studio and kitchen.
Busy here and there.
But then, pen does beckon.
I especially love drawing on these rainy dark days we have been having.
It was so dark late this morning that I lit candles in what looked like a night time room.
10 a.m.
A perfect mood for mystery novels and picking pumpkins.
These dark days are rare, so I relish in them completely.
We got so much rain that our property had little river like flowings here and there.
It was just delicious.
We are not in a flood zone, so we pretty much just enjoyed it.
We did a little running around in the rain moving things to dry porches.
Got soaked.
But mostly, I just let everything get wet.
I am so excited for the plants and gardens to have gotten so thoroughly drenched beyond words.
Glorious rain in the desert.
Looking out from my back porch.
Pumpkin vines happy as can be.
Just wonderful, this rain.
Since it is always sunny and dry, not to mention crazy hot, this is a treat from heaven.
This moody weather brings all sorts of good feelings.
And, hot tea, of course.
Also some drawing and reading, and watching movies about castles whilst painting clay.
Still, I know.
But making progress.
For now, the drawing is completed.
And I for one would adore living in such an abode, you?
I am also quite tickled by this huge size print I am now offering, as seen below.
12" x 16"
Prints can be found in my Etsy shop here.
Offered in a standard 8" x 10" or a larger 12" x 16"
I must run off to see how low my quince branches are to the ground after such rain.
Then another meeting with the pen.
I am loving today sooo much.
I wish I could bottle it.
Rain.
Beloved rain.
The parched earth is hydrated and smiling so big.
What's up with your weather?
I do love weather.
I know it's borderline boring, but I do.
I am obsessed with it really.
🙂
It is supposed to be dry, sunny and 100'F again late in the week.
So, I suppose I better really roll around in the rain water.
Love, V
ps: I would so live there right away….
Witches and all 🙂
"There's some things though I know for certain…
Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder…
Keep rosemary by your garden gate…
Plant lavender for luck…
And fall in love whenever you can…"
Sally Owens, Practical Magic

You did a beautiful job on your sketch my friend. I love that movie, the house they created and the perfect location depicted. I could watch it over and over.
Ahhhhh that rain, if only parched California would get some…….
XOXO
Gorgeous! We went from having too much rain to not enough and then were blessed this weekend with rain and more is on the way this week! We’ve had several dark days, perfect for candles and such, including today – a very moody & threatening sky indeed but not a storm to be had, just cloud upon cloud blowing by! Thankfully temps have fallen to bearable again, loving this Autumn like preview!
We sooooo needed the rain, it’s just beyond glorious! I am soooo grateful for it. We got more rain than I have ever seen, it was a little scary, but then it stopped. My whole yard looks like an ocean beach, firm and packed down from the rain, it’s bizarre and fascinating. Thank you for the illustration props, I sooo love that house and movie and all of it of course, as so many do!! xoxo
I love your drawing and you’ve captured the majesty and wonder of the home in “Practical Magic”. I just adore that movie. It’s about time for another viewing of that film. Maybe pair it with some midnight Margarita’s? LOL
Wonderful — I really appreciate the line drawing and tight detail. I haven’t drawn as much as I like lately — this inspires me, as do your autumn decorations which will get up this weekend here.
We’ve had rain, rain, rain, rain and more rain. The past two days have been lovely but the ground is still wet with Friday’s deluge. Still, our summer has been cool and very wet so I’ll grab those sunny days and warm temperatures and try to snatch as much more summer as I can before autumn hits in earnest!
Gorgeous drawing! I’ve always loved that house. I saved the floor plans from it years ago just in case one day I get filthy rich and can afford to build it.
This is a dreamy house, and I love it. The detail is wonderful. You really do it well. This is one movie that I own and I watch it often.
It’s raining more often than I would like and the weather is changing here. Color changes are starting too soon…But it is all too beautiful.
Aha! I wondered what that little pen and ink snippet in the last post was, and now I see: it’s the Owens house… That drawing is beautiful, love all the little details – you are amazing!
And, wow – look at all that water! I had heard about the heavy rains forecast for Arizona and wondered how things were going down in Fanciful-Land – glad you haven’t been washed away, and are enjoying it. : )
It’s gotten Autumn-like up here in Western Mass: clear skies, sunny days, cool nights and blankets – just wonderful (*contented sigh*).
How wonderful for you to do a pen and pencil drawing of the Practical Magic house!
It’s gorgeous, and over-the-top! What fun you must have had drawing it.
And to think they built that entire house just for the movie in Washington state. They sure pulled it off for the New England setting in the movie too.
The rain looks divine! It sprinkled here twice for one minute yesterday. Just enough to get the cars speckled with spots of dirt. But how refreshing for you in the desert to have such a deluge!
I love the atmosphere of a dark day full of rain and clouds. Such portent of spookiness it brings.
One of my favorite movies. I love this print. You did such a wonderful job capturing the essence of it. Such beautiful details, like the little magical stars coming out of the chimney.
I love the rain, and staying in on a rainy and dark day watching this movie is perfect. We haven’t had much rain lately, strangely enough it feels more like summer than it did all summer, but the cool mornings and nights have been approaching and I feel fall around the corner.
Your drawing is beautiful!! Isn’t the autumn a wonderful time? The grandbaby pumpkins are about to mature in the garden and will soon be ready for harvest. Do you store your pumpkins in a specific way or is it best to leave them indoors in room temperature?
Oh how fun! Cant wait to see your babies!! I leave mine
indoors in a cool to neutral place. They usually last a whole year
almost. At least until early summer, some have even lasted longer. I
just roasted a biggie two nights ago 3

Oooh…that’s great, V. I love that house in the movie. The whole show is so…I don’t know, just so fun and pleasing. I liked the book, too.
Love, love, love! I am definitely buying that as soon as I have a little extra money! That day of rain was so awesome, but it didn’t even last long enough in my opinion. After four years in the desert I think I am hitting my limit because lately I have been yearning for Oregon weather again. I never thought I would want more rain and less sun, but it is true! I am looking for a new job so I have been applying to ones in Oregon and Washington. Jobs are hard to get in my field, so who knows when it will be, but sometime I might be moving home again. I love Tucson, but I am learning things about myself and one of them is I don’t think I want it to be my long-term home. Life is funny that way.
Beautiful! I did a painting of the house a couple of years ago as well, it is such a detailed and stunning home! I wish it were mine!
Love the new drawing! ; D
Lovely. Yes that kind of house is my dream house. Well a cross between that and a big old fashioned farm house.
Your rainy days sound wonderful. We have rain today but since we have rain so often it is just another day.
I love rainy days too, one of the reasons I fit so well choosing to move to Oregon a few years ago. This summer has been exceptionally hot and dry however. Not as hot and dry as when we lived in the the mountains and high desert, but record breaking for this region. I’m trying very hard simply live in the moment, to appreciate these last longer, lighter days of summer. Meanwhile the excitement of approaching fall and winter weather keeps wanting to burst out and start tap dancing in my brain. And decorating. I want to stick skeletons in chairs and apples in pies and pumpkins in… well, pumpkins in/on/baked/perched everywhere! Weather related news I’m excited about, we live far enough north now to have a chance to see the northern lights tonight. I grew up in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota and have happy memories of seeing beautiful dancing light storms. I’ve only seen them once as an adult, many years ago. Got my fingers crossed that we’ll catch a glimpse this evening.
I sooo LOVE it! When can I move in? -xo
I was just flipping through all of your amazing blog posts, rediscovering the magic, and was lingering over your lovely drawing of the house in Practical Magic. Imagine my surprise when a few minutes later that movie began playing on my tv tuned into the Syfy channel!
Most serendipitous!
I first became a fan of your wonderful photos years ago on Flickr i think it was but lost touch when my life got so very complicated. I’m a widow now enjoying a snow day here in nc, the whole state is closed today and I’m drinking hot tea dreaming of holidays, beautiful things & summer.
Oh my, so lovely, the drawing is perfect. Reminds of the home I really wanted to build once we moved back from San Antonio to the Dallas area, but finding the plans and the builders was not to be. Sitting on that porch listening to the rain, the wind, the seasons change. My house backs uo to a creek, where two hawks came and sat on my fence and in those trees for a visit, two large but young birds! Resting in my trees before moving on, giving me a thrill of the day. Much like your gift of rain. Life is a gift, here and there and we just need to stop long enough to receive it.
Great job on the drawing, I hope it does wonderful blessing for you.
