This morning I woke up knowing it was time to do something fun.
To turn on some music, and set out to bake some treats.
To add magic into my life on a random day.
I will tell you one thing –
There is something wonderful that happens if you stay at a tea party for too long.
But I’ll tell you that part in a minute.
First…
The menu was mini scones, brownie cake bites and tea sandwiches.
All made from scratch.
I love the zen of baking.
I start by cleaning my kitchen really well, a blank slate.
Then I plunge into the measuring and mixing and oven timing.
I love the quiet hum of the oven.
And Matty standing by the corner of the oven door sniffing the air.
Have you ever known a dog who is obsessed with baked goods?
I set the table with antique cloth napkins and dried flowers.
When I sent my mom a little video of what I was doing she said –
I think tea time like this should be a daily must.
I have to say it was an instant mood lifter and I agree with her.
To sit and enjoy a cup of tea, add a spark of light and joy to the day.
It’s about taking the time to do something nice for yourself.
And then of course, after several cups of tea the real fairy magic begins.
When cherries get dipped into edible fairy dust and edible stars somehow float onto your cake.
And before you know it, you have a very proper piece of fairy cake right in front of you.
And what, may I ask, could be better on a weekday afternoon than a proper piece of fairy cake?
It seems nothing was at that very moment.
I am working on finding my new norm and not feeling worried all the time.
I have been home since March 8th.
I leave occasionally to visit my country house, but have been nowhere else.
I have not seen my family or friends since February 16th.
I am working to do my part to keep others and myself safe.
So, tea parties are a necessary must.
I am working in my garden, throwing tea parties, and working on art projects.
In the meantime, I am finding ways to add a spark into my life and live happily in this moment in time.
To find my own joys and get back to living in some way that adds light and joy to my life.
I did feel quite stressed for a long while, but now I feel that stress gets me nowhere.
Things are what they are, and all I can do is my part to stay safe, stay home, stay healthy.
And why not have a little fun while I am fine and well?
I am taking this very seriously, I know many people who have gotten sick and a few have even lost the battle.
And while that sounds quite somber – for whatever time I have left in my life I have decided that I need to do the best that I can to live with a mindset of gratitude and do my part, whatever I deem it to be. I will sacrifice whatever I have to in order to help the cause.
If that means I stay home for the next year, then I will.
I know not everyone can do that, but if I can then I will do my part the best way that I can.
And in that time I will grow plants and bake a lot of fairy cakes 🙂
I will watch the birds and nurture my pumpkin patch.
I will sing and play my piano.
I will paint with wild abandon.
I will pray and do yoga and dance.
I will talk to all my friends and family on the phone.
I’ll read books and watch the sunset.
That’s basically what I’m up to here in my neck of the woods.
How about you?
All I can say is that tea time is a mighty fine medicine.
Hands down.
Sparkles included 😉
I’ll see you really soon.
Can you believe it?
Love, Vanessa

Two posts so close together! Yippee!!!! Those tea time treats look amazing! You are inspiring me, as you always do, to get in the kitchen and bake something! Did you make your brownie cakes from scratch? I seem to remember you making everything from scratch. Is it a recipe you have shared here? And where did you get the edible glitter/and tiny stars? So so so cute!!!
love & blessings

ps…hugs & kisses to Matty & Miles!
I think scones make any day a perfect day! Adding fairy cakes and tiny sandwiches would be the only fitting contributions. Raspberry Cordial would add just the right amount of zing. I know you didn’t mention that, but I bet you have your own special recipe of it sitting in an antique bottle somewhere. Just the thought of it makes me feel like sitting back and having a good daydream about chasing the white rabbit until we fall down some enchanted hole. Who knows who we might find waiting for us at the other end?!
Thank you so much for all the magic you bring into our lives! Have you ever made rose petal liqueur? I soak fresh, highly perfumed rose petals in vodka for at least 6 weeks, strain the mixture and mix it with sugar syrup. When you drink this elixir, it tastes like summer to me, even if it is the middle of wintertime. This would be be wonderful for your tea parties as well.
Oh yes, Raspberry cordial is just the thing William!!!!
Oh wow! No but I sure will now, thank you for the suggestion and recipe <3 <3 <3
Dear Vanessa,
Your tea party, pictures and lovely words are just the inspiration we all need. It certainly is hard to stay home, month after month, for who knows how long. I am so glad to know someone else out there is also doing their part to be a good citizen and help others by staying home when possible.
I see blog post after blog post showing off their vacations, their maskless adventures, dinners out, etc and wonder “where is the humanity?!” Our family is fortunate enough to be able to stay home, so we have. We work from home, order groceries by Instacart and other necessities through Target and Amazon. Occasionally we pick up contactless curbside from our favorite restaurants. Doctors offer telemed appointments…we sacrifice for the greater good.
Of course I miss thrift stores, estate sales, the beach, the garden center and browsing in the bookstore. However, I have truly found joy in spending more time at home. I have focused on organization, working out, creating, making new to me recipes, gardening, reading my ever looming stack of to be read books – my dogs are happier than ever! I have been able to watch meaningful movies, documentaries, and series tv – something I never felt I had time for. It seems contradictory to say that I feel more enriched by the quality time I have spent at home while not being able to travel, visit museums, extended family and friends, but it is true!
We are all in this together. Not everyone has the same situation and can’t always stay home, but if we can remember to wear a mask when out in our beautiful world, limit the time we leave home to “necessities only” and practice kindness and compassion for others, it sure would make this time a lot easier for all to bear.
Stay well and be safe!
Hugs,
Christy
Christy, I absolutely agree with every single word you have shared and we are doing the exact same thing. Luckily we all work from home and can stay home in my homes as well. We are just trying to stay well and happy in our own bubbles the best that we can. One day when we go back antiquing we will feel so excited and happy about it. I get all my groceries and necessities delivered as well. What an amazing thing that is, isn’t it? I talk to my grandmother the other day and her positivity and gratitude for simple things, since she is always at home even before this, was just so inspiring. It’s the exact sentiment you have shared here. I love it! <3
Dear Vanessa,
I feel like I’ve just shared tea with you! I always get a lift reading your blog and really appreciate your strong and magical spirit. Blessings to you and please keep sharing.

Good Morning Vanessa

Despite the heat (and no air conditioning!), I, too, am experimenting with new recipes. I’m also learning how to cut my own hair. Yikes!!!
Vanessa,
You are so lucky you still have a grandmother! Mine was filled with positivity and gratitude and enjoyed the simple things as well. She would have breezed right through this time making everything so cozy for when we could be together again.
Yes, it is amazing all the things we have at our fingertips with the internet and delivery services. We are so very lucky, aren’t we? Something I will never take for granted, that is for sure.
You are right, one day when we go back antiquing we will feel so excited and happy! We will certainly deserve it!!
Hugs to you!
Christy
I love “taking tea,” I’ve become addicted to Lavender Lemon tea, really nice flavor. But edible fairy dust and sparkles, I’m going to have to try that. ✨🌠🎉ðŸ’
I love the fairy cake (cherries and stars!!) and we are staying home too for the most part!!! We will all get through this I am confident! Thank you for making it fun!!
I haven’t read your blog in such a long time and I’m delighted to see that it’s still as beautiful and whimsical as ever! I love that picture of the cake with the sparkly cherries and little golden stars!!!!
