Of Pencil and Petal

Hello helooooo!

Drawing days 8

Hi friends!

I am still in my drawing tunnel.

I am in the last crunch time of my illustration deadline, but I wanted to pop in and say heloooo!

How are you?

What's going on out there?

It finally got crrrrrazy Arizona hot here.

So hot that blooming roses get torched just as they try to bloom.

Poor things.

Drawing days 7

They are still so pretty though aren't they?

Here's a peek at some of my little faces.

I have stacks and stacks of illustrations and lots of scanning I am doing down.

Drawing days 1

The dinner plate dahlias are blooming and bobbing with their heavy weight.

Drawing days 2

The heat is making vines twist and twirl.

It's really happening.

Summer is just in time for itself.

Drawing days 3

I love the fluffers.

Coral pink goodness.

Drawing days 4

I wish I had photographed the roses below as they changed…

They start out bright canary yellow, then they turn neon orange.

Then all of a sudden they turn almost white with red edges.

And so many clusters too.

They were a gift so I have no idea what their name is, but they sure do go through lots of color changes.

Fun fun!

So, I best get back to work.

I brought some blooms in and am making tea.

I've been up the hills before 6 a.m. & tended my gardens.

Phhhew!

🙂

Drawing days 9

Time to work, wish me luck.

I am feeling like I might be beginning to fight a cold or something.

Noooooooo!

Haha!

I am not good at colds so I hope the massive amounts of vitamin C does the trick and I avoid the whole thing.

For now I am back to work and loving the poor fresh bloomed dried roses.

I still keep them because they are so lovely.

June is slipping right by isn't it?

My room is in disarray as a pipe in the kitchen wall burst and flooded my room on the other side.

Hello things under the bed floating around, aaaaack!

It's all dry now, and although it's still a bit torn up and walls are cut open, it's dry.

Today pipes will get cut open and on we'll go.

If nothing else my floor is sure clllllleeeean!

I've been through this before at the city house a few years ago.

The whole house had to be ripped open then, every single room.

Good thing that's not the case here in the country.

Knock on wood.

So, when I walked into my room yesterday and it looked like a room in the Titanic I just stared blankly.

Just looked at it, shrugged my shoulders and said, I best get some towels.

Hahaha!

That's the good part about getting older.

Things just don't throw you over the edge like they used to.

You just say, oh great.

And then you just go with the flow like Eeyore.

So, I guess that's good about being older and wiser etc.

It's still a beautiful day.

No biggie in the grand scheme of life at all.

It's shiny and hot out with lots of garden growing going on.

I hope your day is fabulous!!

Love, V

Sparkly heart

I live on the Gulf Coast and flowers sometimes get a little torched from the heat. I like that you brought them in..I think they are still beautiful as well in a wabi sabi way….perfection in imperfection. Besides, they’ve gone through all that trouble to bloom only to be waylaid by the heat. You have to admire a flowers’ tenacity. I love your aesthetics, Vanessa.

  2. As a new follower, I have not yet [quite] figured out what your blog is “all about’ but am totally loving it…I know that makes no sense at all but I try to communicate honestly…It’s so fantastic when I run across someone new to me and different and before I finished reading a post or browsing the pictures I am almost out of my chair and can’t wait to put something pretty together from my “yarden”….thanks -loving it!

  3. Laurie says:

Pleeeeeease share every single illustration! I crave seeing your beautiful creations, they breathe happiness and inspiration into the world 😍💖👑

  4. Awe, that’s good to know that in Florida that can happen also, poor little dear petals <3 I agree, totally still beautiful with their darkened colors and crispy paper art ways. Thank you Jude <3

  5. Oh Yess Jonell, I know exactly how you feel. I see something and have to scurry off with my own desires to do something. Thanks for saying helooo, and hope to visit with you again <3

  6. Awwwe, Laurie, you rock!! <3 <3 I hope I can share every single one soon <3 <3

  7. Marjorie says:

Oh dear oh dear!! We had a flood last year in the winter….it was such a horrid mess!! I do hope all gets cleared up and mended soon and that things get back to normal for you very soon!! Your sketches are also so very pretty, as always!!

  8. Misha/DawaiOser says:

I love that you are so calm in the face of a flood. My water heater broke at an apartment a few years ago…washed over my entire place…and then it flooded the neighbors below me, going through their walls and ceiling. Ack! Admittedly, we weren’t all that mellow or calm. Hahahaha. It took weeks to get the carpeting dry and get that “musty smell” out of things.
You should packet-up all of your organic flower petals and sell them in your Etsy shop. I want some to make that amazing vanilla, “confetti-cake” you shared the recipe for last year. I bookmarked it but can’t think of the name? I’d like to serve it at my next girls gathering.

  9. Those roses!
I had such a strong memory of a tree dahlia we used to have!

  10. Thank goodness I have a concrete floor so I just mopped it up and had a super clean floor after, haha! And thank goodness it is 108 and dry because it sucked the moisture right out of everything, phew what a whirlwind. The pipes are still being worked on and my room is a hot mess but I can live with that for a little while. Oh goood idea on rose petals and flower petals. xoxo

  11. Kelly says:

Sorry about the crazy stuff goings on V. Happy to hear damage was little and cleaning quick. Hopeful your pipes will be fixed in no time! Sending you well wishes on your project and good vibes!
Love that tea cup above! Can you believe 113 degrees perhaps tomorrow!!! Yikes! Keep Cool and give Miles and Matty a hug for me! <3

  12. Eve says:

G O R G E O U S Flowers! Yes, you are so right about getting older and wiser. It’s takes a lot more to get really freaked out. You’ve been there before and you know it will pass.

  13. Michelle Lindquist says:

So … did you hang above from one of your chandeliers singing, “My heart will go on…”?! What a bummer about the burst and the flooding. I have to admit that I would’ve been quite heartsick over it at first, but then would’ve gotten right into the mode of “Oh well, what can ya do?”, and then would’ve done what one needs to do and just gone with the flow of it (no pun intended!). So, good for you, doing that right off the bat. At least the heat there helped a lot with drying it all up — no leftover musty smell, eww! Sooo exciting to see a peek of your illustrations — love the sweetie with the crown. 🙂 Can’t wait to hear what/who this is all for! I do so hope the Vitamin C works and you don’t get a cold — rest and relax when you can, nap with the furs, drink tea and lots of water, and soak up some sunshine (in the cool hours), and hopefully you’ll be a-okay. Beeeaaaauuuutiful roses — and I too love them still when they’re wilted. They have a softness and gentleness to them then. But I love seeing the strong, vibrant ones too — those color-changing ones are amazing! Have the loveliest day, Vanessa, and thanks for sharing all the beauty you do! xoxo 🙂

  14. I’m hoping Your cold fades into nothingness and that Your flood is taken care of by others,so that You may go on enjoying and telling Us all the glories of the Desert.OX Denise

  15. Renee says:

Oh no. At least you could see the good in the bad-the clean floor. Just no point in getting all crazy about things that are beyond our control.
Hot here, we need rain already, garden is keeping me busy. I’ve been making all kinds of new recipes with all the squash and zucchini.
Watching 3 2 year olds for a while in the morning. They are such fun little ones.

  16. Why is it, when we are in the middle of crazy things happening, then OTHER crazy things begin happening? It always seems to go that way, ya know? Oh well.
So, we go with the flow, and wonder how we ever made it through when all is said and done. Yeah.
Your flowers are gorgeous. The heat has crimpled my roses’ petals too. Your rose which is yellow, then turns colors when the heat gets to it might be called ‘Love’ or ‘Peace’ although I think ‘Peace’ is the lilac colored rose. I have a friend who has a row of ‘Love’ almost the width of her yard, which is used as a divider between their grass yard, and their vegetable garden. It is so divine when the roses are all in bloom.
I guess it’s better to have a burst pipe in the heat than during the cold of winter. Try Fennel tea for your possible cold. A tsp. of crushed seeds, in hot water from your tea kettle, but not boiling and let it steep ten minutes. You can check out the benefits of Fennel online.
Are all of your illustrations going into a book? I hope so, then we can all buy the book! If you haven’t already thought of publishing your own book about your blog and creativity, it would be fabulous!

  17. Betty says:

Yipes! I’m so sorry to hear about the flood at your house, Miss Vanessa!!! I do so hope it is all taken care of now!! We have a leak in the ceiling of my studio and now nothing is there but a big bread bowl to catch the drips until it can be taken care of!! But otherwise, you seem to be keeping busy as always!! I’m hard at work on my Mad Tea Party post and can’t wait for the blog party!!
Wishing you a lovely rest of your week!!!
    Hugs,
    Betty

  18. Lynda Shoup says:

Thanks for the peek….your drawings are lovely.
Pipes bursting…kind of like fireworks in reverse? What a rude interruption. Sorry to hear you had this to deal with, but love your look at the positive.
Keep posting those flower photos. They absolutely make me swoon. I have a black thumb, but I do so love flowers.

  19. Jen says:

Oh Vanessa, so sorry to hear about the pipes bursting. Yes…I went through that THREE times at our old house and once so far at our present house. Yeah…oh well. I am a bit calmer than I was when it first happened years ago. Argh….
    Lovely drawings. Always. xoxo Jen
