Lovely Times

We have had extra lovely times, hope you too?

Busy, crazy, wonderful days.

Only, now the transition begins.

Lovely times 11

Get the ornaments out?

What?

Wait, did we lose a week or something?

How did December turn up on Thanksgiving weekend?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

Lovely times 13

It's all too much for me.

Just way too much.

But I am compelled to plunge too, aaaaaa!

I need an extra week between Thanksgiving and December, you?

My brain is in this domino pile up madness 🙂

I am still trying to transition out of pumpkin cheesecake head mode.

Lovely times 2

By the by, how was your Thanksgiving??

Lovely times 25

We had the most touching, pleasant Thanksgiving ever, me thinks.

I enjoyed all the cooking and baking.

It was low key and busy, but zen too.

Lovely times 1

If you are not a vegetarian, here is fair warning from bird eaters.

I know.

It's hard, how can we eat meat when we love animals so much?

It's so painfully hard not to humanize them, isn't it?

But, we eat meat.

Lovee was a vegetarian (of the serious health nut variety) almost his whole life, up until a handful of years ago.

And, I was a vegetarian for about 4 years in my 20's.

Or was it 6?

I can't recall.

Alas, it wasn't for me.

To each his own I say.

Lovee became a meat eater again by accident, when invited to a special dinner by a chef who made him meat :)  Oops.

Anyhow, where was I?

Ah yes, on eating turkeys and Thanksgiving makings…

Lovely times 33

The turkey was sooo delicious.

How do you prepare your turkey?

I make my breadcrumb, spice, mushroom, butter, slivered almond, raisin stuffing/dressing on the side, in its own pan.

I don't stuff the bird with it, do you?  I never tried it, I thought maybe it would dry out the bird too much, does it?

For my bird, I butter the inside and salt and pepper it, then I just put a sweet onion, an apple, a lemon cut in half and rosemary inside – after it's been washed and dried of course.

Lovely times 34

I sit it on a bed of carrots, sweet onions and celery (that have been chopped, salted and lightly peppered).

I put the carrot mix inside of a floured roasting bag (you can get them at the grocery store) that has been placed in a roasting pan.

I then place the turkey in the bag, on top of the bed of veggies.  I stick my hand in, rub real butter all over the turkey, and pour two cups of white wine over it, then I salt and pepper it a bit.  Last, I place a couple sprigs of fresh rosemary on the top of the turkey.

(the inside of bag will look like a hot mess after the butter, don't worry, haha!)

I close up the bag with a piece of baking string (the ties that come with the bag are too flimsy for me), punch a few holes on the top of the bag with a skewer, put it in a hot 350' oven and cook for 2.5-3 hours.

Lovely times 36

It has never failed me.

I have to say, this method I learned growing up, is flawless.

The meat is always moist and cooked perfectly.

Guests always marvel at how "not dry" the meat is.

I recommend this method if you are not having good luck with your turkey.

Lovely times 31

I made fresh yeast rolls, and I was wanting to make a ridiculous yam dish.  So, I made my yams as I normally do, and then popped them in a baking dish and covered them with marshmallows.

I popped it into the oven between 325-375' for about 30 minutes (since the yams are already hot and cooked) until the marshmallows are golden brown.  When they cool a little the marshies get crunchy and hollow, a bit like meringues, and are just awesome.

Lovely times 32

I forgot to take photos of the final table.

Oh well.

But there was also a cranberry dish, the veggies that cooked with the turkey, stuffing, gravy and white traditional mashed potatoes.

Oh, here is a tip for easy Thanksgiving day makings.

Cook your potatoes a day before, but don't finish them until the next day.

I like to chop and boil my yams and potatoes (separately of course) the afternoon before Thanksgiving day.

After they are cooked I drain and leave them in the pot to cool.  You can pop them in the fridge at night, or leave them in a cool spot over night.  The next day, all you have to do is put them on the stove, turn on the heat, add butter and milks or broth – whatever you use.  Then mash and bring to desired heat.

It takes the entire potato step out of the actual day, and they are just as good if not better.

Lovely times 28

So, I wasn't going to share this appetizer so you guys wouldn't go eeeeeeewe!

But, in case you do eat, dun dun dun… Liver….

You can make pate' with the liver that comes inside the turkey.

You know, the parts you throw away?

I don't like beef liver, but when I was trying to raise my iron levels (eating lots of this stuff) when I wasn't well, I decided to try farm raised chicken liver.  It wasn't too bad.  The dogs loved it 🙂

But over time and better prep, I liked it, even though I had it very very rarely.

So, I decided to try to make turkey liver pate.

It was really good actually.

It's grown on me like soft boiled eggs have.

So, all I did was wash the liver, and put it in a bowl of buttermilk for a couple hours.

Then I chopped up some sweet onions, put them in a hot pan with butter and added the liver.  I got everything brown and toasty (fully cooked), and then put it in the food processor with the juice of 1 lemon and some garlic powder + salt.

Spread on crackers (I should have used a pastry bag to put it on the crackers, I know) and top with mint.  Now, the mint is what mellows the whole experience, and makes it extra lovely.

So, there you go, the honest truth.

There was liver pate' enjoyed at my house.

Eeeeeeeeeeew 🙂

But yumm too, if you like that sorta thing.

Lovely times 35

After all the gobbling, we had to walk and walk around our yard.

Lovely times 9

Then I got this idea that we needed cocktails.

As you know, Mister Lovee hates the taste of alcoholic beverages.

(he might have a tiny bit of port on a good day, maybe)

I know, we are sooo darn boring.

But…

After a youth of getting sick every time I drank, I stopped at around 25 for good.

I had a bunch of wine at a party/office function about 10 years ago and got violently ill.

So, I gave up.

I can really only handle one drink if I am lucky.

My doc says it could even be a sort of allergy, where my body instantly rejects it.

Weird right?

BUT, that does not keep from from having a little bar of goodies for guests.

Or, keeping some grey goose in the freezer.

Lovely times 21

A Shirley Temple spike here and there should be okay, no?

Lovely times 23

It was good.

Yes I had a headache after.

But it was fun whilst it lasted 🙂

Lovely times 24

Somewhere, where Thanksgiving was in the wrong week (for me at least), and Christmas looms ever so (too) close for this Catholic girl, Hanukkah swirled in for Mister Lovee.

And when I couldn't find the menorah, I opted for plan B.

Lovely times 27

Happy Hannukah🖤

Lovely times 26

So….

Now it's transition time, isn't it?

Time to swap one green for the other.

Lovely times 3

Back to juicing.

Adios green pie plate.

Hello green juice drink.

Lovely times 6

Lovely times 5

Some sort of balance has to happen 🙂

And, I love my green juice.

Makes me feel awesome.

Mister gets me organic goodies at Sprouts.

Spinach, kale, green apple, celery, cucumber (ginger sometimes, lime sometimes).

Chug.

Lovely times 4

Mmmmm.

Then there is enough energy after Thanksgiving shenanigans (rather than being asleep with one cheek stuck to a paper plate coated in pie crumbs and whipped cream) to go outside and play.

🙂

Lovely times 16

Collecting berries for decor.

Lovely times 19

I am telling you, I have panic chills accepting the fact that it is December 2nd.

There is a part of me that wants to scream NOOOOOOO, in slow mo.

Then there is another part of me that wants to just shrug my shoulders, wrap iridescent garland around my neck, put red lipstick on outside the lines (with knee hi stockings rolled around my ankles), turn on the record player, spike my egg nog, and cha cha around the house before noon - on tip toes.

What a concept???!

Any takers?

Lovely times 15

But for now, I somehow transition into some form of holiday mode.

Lovely times 14

I am not just ready yet for full blown holiday decor.

So, I'll cut some green off the trees for now…

And somehow…

Lovely times 12

Find a way to cope with the changing times.

The transition is in full effect.

Do you know it is still in the mid 70's here today?

Yes, cooler weather is coming.

But it's like, Halloween, Thanksgiving, December 2nd…

It's all a blur.

A blur I tell ya.

Lovely times 10

I think we need more shirley temples just to cope.

You?

Lovely times 20

I'll be over here elbow deep in clay.

Lovely times 30

If it kills me, there will be fresh clay this year, before it's all over.

Somehow, somewhere, little faces are begging to be born.

And I must oblige.

I best get to work.

🙂

So happy to be back after the food fest.

Did you survive it?

Hoooray!!

Love, Vanessa

Sparkly heart

ps:  Let's see, how about a random tid-bit?

Hmmm, well…

I have been listening to Haim's new Album "Days are Gone" on repeat.  It's so fab and fresh and fun.  Most excellent.  Love those 3 sisters.

(Haim, pronounced hi-yum)

You probably heard "Forever" over the last year?

It's so good, 80's-esque.

The girls did awesome on SNL this weekend, see here.

You always have to wait for their chorus because, they have awesome chorus parts.

Everyone hates on Este's facial expressions (blonde), but I love that passion in her music making.

Facial expressions included!

  1. LOL! I was a vegetarian for a while in my 20s too – mostly because it annoyed my meat-and-potatoes father 🙂 Happy Thanksgiving-Christmas-Hanukkah!

  2. Kimberly says:

    Vanessa:
I am with you…I am having a very difficult time going from Thanksgiving straight into December. Where’s my extra week in between? I have a big birthday tomorrow and somehow, it doesn’t feel right…decorating on my birthday. So strange.
I’m glad you had a magical Thanksgiving. Such yummy goodness…(well, except for the liver).
Here’s a little Hanukkah story: As you know, Ava works for a grocery store. We live in a city in Southern California that isn’t very diverse, to say the least. So, a nice woman came in and asked Ava if she could show her where the store kept their Menorah candles. The woman said she had been all over town and couldn’t find a single store that carried the candles. So, Ava took the lady to the ridiculously small kosher area of the store. No Menorah candles. Ava was horrified and she looked at the lady and said “I am so sorry. We should carry Menorah candles. I’ll talk to the manager about it.” She came home from work that evening and was just in disbelief. Can you believe that? However, they did have blue Hanukkah cookies in the bakery. Go figure…
    Happy Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

  3. Queenie says:

I too love those baking bags!! They do such a wonderful job on turkey! This year we did ham, but looking at your wonderful turkey photos Queenie’s now craving turkey, ha! Saturday was the big family ta-doooo here at the house as HoneyMan’s family is Canadians who snowbird here and had their Thanksgiving a month ago. The house was bursting with friends and family Saturday laughing, talking and of course eating.
    Have a great day!
    Always, Queenie

  4. deb says:

Oh V!!! Tell me tell me tell me how do you make a Shirley Temple??? Oh happy memories! When i was a young teenager (13ish) my older brother would come home from the Navy and take his little sister out dancing and buy her Shirley Temples! It is a treasured memory and i would LOVE to make a Shirley Temple at home! Hugs! deb

  5. Alia says:

Oh Miss V! Haha, cha cha and spiked eggnog sounds just divine. You do have style lady! Also I haven’t had a Shirley Temple in I don’t know how long, but I used to just adore them when I was a kid. I am glad you had a nice Thanksgiving!

  6. Deb, here is my version.Lovee gets thoselime Hansens
sodas all the timeor ginger ale, then I put in cherries and a little
cherry juice, voila!!! (the original is ginger ale, some limeand
    grenadine syrup me thinks?)

  8. Candace says:

I am a flexitarian… long stretches of both.
WHAT a great and joyous post. I had a single serve Thanksgiving, meaning it was just me here in the Classic City. Some roast chicken, a mess of greens as they say in the South, corn, and a piece of Georgia Pecan Pie. It’s been a long time since I have not cooked for a major holiday and I felt totally weird. But it was a great, gray, cold winter day and Cold Mountain was on the boob tube (had not seen that since it premiered — and the Girls and I really laid back and enjoyed it all. They had wet food with their kibble, so you know they were happy!
Thanks for your presence. Happiest of holidays and get ready for the onslaught.
    Candace, Still in Athens

  9. Laura Tieri says:

I’ve always thought that the holidays need to be spread out a bit. It was funny right before Thanksgiving I noticed that all 3 holidays were merging. I saw people’s house that still had Halloween decorations out, some had turkey decorations, & some had already put up Christmas decorations! It was like all 3 holidays had morphed into one!
I just took down my fall decorations today & will start on Christmas tomorrow.
Since we were visiting my in-laws for Thanksgiving, I didn’t have much control over the dinner. We went to a restaurant that had a limited, non-vegetarian option menu. I got the traditional turkey dinner with all the fixins. I ate everything but the turkey. I let my in-laws take it home for later.
The weather is supposed to be in the 50’s for a couple days & then it’s going to get very cold! My birthday is on Friday & it always seems to be cold & snowy on that day!
That’s weird…you & me & Kimberly all have birthdays a few days apart!

  10. Marilyn says:

    Your Thanksgiving sounds wonderful.
Shirley Temples for me too, please.
Full speed ahead here as I have two
tea parties to do in less than 2 weeks.
So much fun, let the merriment begin.
We are like fairy godmothers I do believe.

I am a big cereal eater lol
I am not much of a cook…..everything you prepare looks amazingly yummy.
I can almost smell it as I look at your photos:)
I guess my girls are not going to be much into cooking either lol
Kiersten my eldest she came home from work this evening and says wow what smells sooooo good
She ask what did you bake ? Haha I had a candle burning is what she smelt…lol.
Then she ask me if she could fry her some eegs ….:/ now my whole house stinks not only
Of fried eggs ,but burnt fried eggs ….sooo now I sit here and gag at the smell …..lol.
    Thanks Kiersten ha
Any who enjoyed this imaginary meal I had with you and Love
    ((Hugs)) gina

  14. Oh Vanessa, your images are just delicious! (Do I start all my comments to you this way? It sure feels like it…)
I feel the same about eating meat, but vegetarianism is not for me either. I tried it once when I was 20, when I was dating an American hippie. Then suddenly one day I found myself outside of McDonald’s with a half eaten burger in my hand – with no idea how I had gotten there! My body was just craving meat and had steered me in the direction.
Would you consider joining my blog challenge for the coming Advent Sundays? Your posts are perfect, and the fact that you are a mixed religion household I’m sure makes for interesting traditions 🙂

  15. Cori G. says:

I want to come to your house for Christmas!! She says while bouncing up and down on her toes, hands waiving in the air ;-))). Oh I agree with you most ardently…transitioning from Thanksgiving to Christmas is a difficult one. I always feel that time goes by so quickly that Christmas is the day after Thanksgiving. No time in between the two. But your Thanksgiving meal looked fabulous and fantastical. And your Mister Lovee looked ever so dapper as he was about to sit down and partake of all your scrumptiousness. How ever do you do it?? Please tell me your secret?
    Happy Holidays my Beloved Friendling!
    Xoxo,
    Cori

  16. Alia says:

Haha I feel like that is a good inspiration. Or maybe the ladies from Grey Gardens (only without the sad and alone part). A little eccentricity never hurt anyone, and just makes life more fun! Mine definitely takes the form of dressing up quite often.

  17. Marjorie says:

OH what treats all!! Looks like you had a splendid *and yummy* Thanksgiving!! : ) Wishing you the most magical of early December-times, too!!

  18. Your photos make me suspect you live in a magazine page, V.
I like your gentle slide into the holidays. With little kids, Christmas is SCREAMING through their pores. There is no subtlety in our realm.

  19. Renee says:

I had about 30 people here including the children 🙂 So I asked people to bring a dish or two or three. So I baked a 20 lb Butterball turkey and do mine very much like yours with the onions, celery, carrots, salt, pepper and butter and some poultry seasoning. I make a mixture of butter, salt, pepper and poultry seasoning that I put between the sking and the meat and all over the skin. I made a cornbread dressing (and they love it and kept saying how good it was), baked a ham, made cranberry/jello dish, and sweet potato casserole. I also made 2 pumpkin rolls and 2 pumpkin pies. It was less exhausting than me trying to do the whole meal.
We must be boring, too. I just don’t care anything about alcoholic drinks just once in a while during vacation maybe. The alcohol just sets my esphoagus on fire because of my reflux.
And yes I needed another week. I bought another tree to put in the den and it is up but I still haven’t put my big tree up in the living room or gotten any of the other baubles out that go around the house.
I have done some shopping. I ordered some things on line yesterday for the grands and have done a bit in stores. I refuse to go to the mall on weekends so only early in the day through the week shopping for me.
And it will soon be a year since I retired and I keep wondering how I ever got anything done when I was working.

  20. Eve says:

Great post! I always agree with your food choices. I also was a vegetarian in my 20’s for a couple of years. Because of my love of animals and my horror at their abuse. But, alas I felt like a hypocrite because I was not willing to give up my leather.
It was the 80’s–I was swathed in black leather.
Thankfully, we now have many humane meat choices. Nowadays I can live without leather, but I am still on meat.
I too am in need of another week with my fall decor, it’s never enough! There is talk in my home of getting the tree.
All of this fun and beauty and then what will we have in February and March? what? What?

  21. Love your Christmas decorations. With the transition in our lives of having our daughter married now and out of the house, we decided to go with new decorations this year, mostly consisting of silvers and blues and whites. It all turned out better than I had planned. It is fun to be starting some new traditions now that we are on our own again.

  22. Jenn says:

Your feast looks so delicious Miss V! I am especially in love with all the festive touches you are adding to your decorating. I love the greenery!

  23. My mind is still in a blur from Thanksgiving…it was so scrumptious, and yet went way too fast. I have some left-over turkey and dressing which I have in the freezer, so it will be an easy meal to have at some point.
Your green juice looks out of this world delicious and healthy. My 88 year old dearest friend swears by carrot, celery, and apple juice as a detox.
Thank you, as always, for sharing your dreamy photos.
And I can’t wait to see what is taking shape with your clay!
Seriously, my brain is still fried from all of the doings from the last two weeks with extra company coming and going out of town. But it was good too!
    XO
    Miss Teresa

  24. Kelly says:

I was just shocked when I realized that Hanukkah was the same day as we celebrated Thanksgiving! TOO much pressure! Yikes, I had to find the menorah and candles and we have several birthdays in our family thrown in together too. Since my B-day is also this Monday, I always claim the right to have my Christmas lights up early. Its a good thing cuz the tree will have to wait until I can magically get Thanksgiving decor put away. Ugh!!!!
V, I love how you used the Eucalyptus branches with your brilliant green and silver bulbs. Nice touch!
The Shirley Temple drink is a classic and can bring a tear to my eyes of special days gone by.
Ohh yes, so my girls and I watched the SNL show with that Haium band and sorry but we did make fun of the blonde gals faces and also her expressions where they end the show with hugging each other. I have to give her credit though, she really does have a love of life, you can tell!!!
Can u tell me how many years you have grown the red berry bush and what its called?
Stay sane my friend and enjoy your your clay designing. Oh I can’t wait to see!!!!<3

  25. Quick get the menorah!! hahahaa 😉
I know, that was just weird.
It’s like all the Holidays had a pile up car wreck.
Gosh I love that Este of Haim. Her facial expressions are what solidified my groupieness 😉
I just love expressive people who aren’t trying to be all cookie cutter, ya know? Love that girl.
Plus, I am one of those face people. Once in church, the head of the church office (a lady) came over after mass and said to my mom, I couldn’t focus because your daughter was making so many facial expression, all I could do was stare at her wondering what she was thinking 🙂 hahahaa!! Imagine? I must have been like Robim Williams sitting over there in my own little wacky world, HA!
On plants – Oh, soooo when I left the city house for good, one of the saddest things I left was my pyracantha bush. Yes it has big thorns here and there, but I love it. I had shaped my one at the city house into a perfect arch, and the berries would hang down so beautifully over head.
    Pyracantha, get some 🙂
So, 3 years ago I got a few for here, and they have flourished. They grow fast with good water.
If you get them at home depot, get the biggest ones. No sense in having to wait 🙂
    xoxo

  26. Kelly says:

Thanks Vanessa, I wanted something new, plant wise and yours caught my eye!!!! Sooo, I have to tell ya my menorah was in the freezer, cuz it gets the wax buildup off easy and mine comes apart from the stand. Hubby and I bought it together probs in 1990s, since we felt we would combine our holidays! So it’s kinda old but antiquey with a gold bronzed patina look.
Robyn Williams in church!!! OMG!!!! I would have to leave cuz i would have busted out in laughter! I do love watching kiddos in church. I envision the laughing Jesus picture my dad has in his office, cuz you know Jesus loved children!!!
Sorry, I feel your pain about leaving your trained pyracantha. You put a lot of Love into shaping it! Plants are another one of our Babies!!! My gramps, helped to plant our NOW very large tree in the backyard and if we had to move, I would be “very” upset!!! Gosh, I miss that Gramps of mine and how he used to hum a tune! Opps, sorry my mind doth wonder.
Have a wonderful week! R U getting rain? We have leaks in our roof so as much as I know we could use it, I’m hoping we just get a drizzle here! We are getting the roof done this next month! I dread!
You know I’ll be headed to home depot soon. I “LOVE” the gardening department!!!
My girls refuse to go with me cuz I take too long, go figure!!!! TeHeHEE!!!<3

  27. Also the pyracantha stays green all winter, YAY!! When I cut pieces
off, I just take my cutters with me so I can cut off the thorns as I go.
    Like roses 🙂
I make lots of faces. I have a little allgery nose twitch. I
twitch it when it is itchy, cuz I am an allergy sufferer – so people know my
bunny twitch 🙂 I dont do it non stop, but I seem to do it often enough
to be getting a little wrinkle at the top of my nose from it!!!

I have some sort of alcohol allergy (or an allergy to something that’s in it) too. I can only drink a glass, any more than that and I get a crippling headache. If it’s white wine then I also get huge horrible stomach cramps.

  31. I do too!! Itchy and sneezy too (red and itchy face too).Plus,
main thing isI get all tipsy very fast. I also get dizzy and plum
rotten feeling 🙂 Too bad, I wont ever be able to be a blathering
drunk. Sometimes that sounds like fun. Oh well, not in the cards for
me :))) At least now i know why in my cocktails and dancing days I always
got sicker than a dog 😉
