I know Flan should be over at my blog called PastriesandSweets.Com…
However, there is old fashioned pink popcorn being served there now.
So, we'll just have to have some flan over here today.
All to ourselves 😉
The recipe I use is identical to this one here.
It's fail proof, seriously.
Try it.
Soon.
You'll be so happy you did.
The only thing I do different, is that I omit the 1/2 cup sugar in the egg/milk mixture.
You can leave it in, I just don't like super sweet flan, since there is already sugar over the top.
Plus, the sweetened condensed milk is super sweet.
Note * Before you begin making your flan, put your water bath in the oven as the oven preheats.
Then melt your 1 cup of sugar that serves as your caramel topping.
Remember, as soon as the sugar (for your topping) looks like it is about melted (stirring often), remove it from the heat, because once it totally melts, and it is still on the heat, it burns up fast.
Also, it's crrrazy hot, so be extra careful.
Then pour it into 6 small ramekins, or one large.
I opt for one large, and use a 1 hour cooking time.
Pour it in and swirl around the sides carefully to coat.
The sugar will harden faster than fast.
That's okay.
Now, put it aside and make the custard mixture.
I use a hand mixture to get it really smooth.
Then, simply pour it into your prepared baking dish that has the sugar coating in it.
And, pop it into your pre-heated water bath oven…
Some people cover it as it cooks, so that you don't get a thin skin where the mixture meets the oven air.
I don't much care about that.
So, this is what it looks like when it is cooked uncovered.
As soon as it pops out of the oven, I take a hot plate and place it in my fridge.
Then I put the hot flan on the hot plate, and pop it into the fridge for 2 hours.
You can leave it in longer if you want it really chilled well.
In fact, you can leave it in the fridge until the next day if you are premaking it.
The point is, it has to be refrigerated at least 1-2 hours before you even think about serving it.
Or, you'll have a hot mess on your hands because the custard won't be set.
When I am ready to serve it, I take a really sharp knife, and run it around the entire flan.
Hold a plate over your baking dish, and flip.
Then, watch the magic happen…
The sugar you caramelized has turned into a beautiful syrup.
Perfecto!
Sorry about these horrid night time photos, but Mister Lovee was not going to wait for morning shots.
He had to gobble half of it in one go.
It was awesome.
Give it a whirl.
Easy and yumm.
If you like flan, you'll love this.
As for other things.
I am in heart mode.
You?
Although, I love hearts any time of the year.
When Valentine's Day looms, I always want to make super homemade treats.
Like wonky frilly Valentine's with glue bits showing.
For some reason, in my mind, Valentine's day is filled with obviously homemade items.
That aren't really well made.
I find vast charm in such items.
Quirky akwardly made this and that's always steal my heart.
I made some pitiful little glue hearts on wax paper recently.
They are so wobbly and tattered, but they scream Valentine's day as I see it in my heart.
I just painted thick pure craft glue in heart shapes on wax paper, and covered the glue with sparkles.
I let them dry over night, and then…
I carefully pealed them off the wax paper the next day.
I left some of the wax paper in the center of the hearts.
The fun in making them, takes away from how wonderfully awful they are.
It's a super easy craft for kidlettes too.
I used double stick tape to stick them to my windows…
Whilst under serious supervision 🙂
What have you been up to?
I have too many projects going at once as usual.
I think I need some sound discipline.
Let's see, what have I been up to?
Shopping, tidying, outings with Lovee.
Garden.
Cottage.
Obliteraing the last of the giant pumpkin patch (dry vines etc).
Lots of creating too.
I have been sketching and painting.
Sculpting…
Watercoloring…
But most important of all.
I've been cuddling.
The most wonderful all good things.
Fur.
I have taught the boys to human hug so much, from the time they were little babies, that they cuddle up to me, and beg for hugs about 457 times a day.
Yay.
Yay for hugs.
Well, I am currently fleshing out a painting, so I best be on my way.
It's warm and sunny, and sprouts are sprouting.
Violets are blooming.
I am mowing, plowing, tilling.
Work work work in the garden.
Seed catalogs pour out of my mailbox.
Happy happy joy joy!!
See you soon!
Looove, V
Ps: How about some random things?
We haven't done 3 random things in a while.
Okay, let's see here.
1) Mick Jagger's moves always make me smile.
If you learn these, you can get a work out warm up.
Ha!
In fact, I think you should learn the moves today.
🙂
2) Mister Lovee looks like a Rolling Stone.
Like, he's been a missing member all these years or something.
Big time.
Seriously.
3) The singer in this ALWAYS amuses me.
Such sound outbursts must be soooo liberating.
Must try.

Thanks for the flan recipe. As much as I love it, I’ve never made it.
The tortillas turned out great. I used the left overs for breakfast tortillas. Now I’ll have to try the flan.
Your little hearts are very cute. I have been making my own Valentine treats to give away.
My favorite thing to do is to randomly give them away to strangers on V-Day. I’ll run errands & give something to everyone that waits on me. I just love the reaction…they always get so excited. I think because it’s so unexpected.
I have a big dog & a little dog. The big one is a momma’s boy & we cuddle all the time & take naps together. He follows me everywhere.
I forgot to mention that your new art projects look wonderful. The sculpting looks amazing!
Will we get to see the finished products? I really like the dark haired girl on the front card.
Some freshly baked little faces 😉 Like an elfin workshop over there! Always at a different stage in the creative process. Lovely sketch, some sort of tea and cakes in an enchanted forest? Ah the epitome of all things lovely and Vanessa!
Hey sis, your flan looks good. I am not a big fan of flan, the texture reminds me too much of jell-o and you know how I feel about that, but yours looks very beautiful.
I love your little hearts, they are super cute.
Matty is such a good looking pup. I love him. I wish he loved me in return.
i just realized I may have spelled Matty wrong… is it Matty or Mattie? Matisse. Jees… Help me out here, please!
Matty 🙂

I’ve never tried flan… so maybe I’ll try it & if I don’t like it I can always pawn it off my sweety’s unsuspecting co-workers… =D
Fur baby hugs & cuddles are the best thing in the world! I can’t live without them. ^-^
And I LOVE Valentine’s Day! Homemade hearts & love notes & valentines are just the best… I love to slip love notes in between the pages of my sweety’s text books… then when she least expects it, BAM! Love note! ^-^
XOXO
Annalee, you are a romantic!!!! Love it!! I missed ya, what

The flan looks amazing. Never tried making it before, maybe I should 🙂
I’ve never had flan before, at least not like that. The flan I can remember having is sponge like thing with a big dip in the middle that’s filled with a jelly type thing. It wasn’t that great.
Your type of flan looks really yummy though. I might have to try and make it.
You should, you should 😉

Ahhh…OOO…mmmmm, two of my fav’s are Flan and Creme Brulee. I made the Creme Brulee from your other wonderful site…Pastries and Sweets…Excellente ! Both of your sites make my day, you are such a sweety Pie 🖤 I got rave reviews from my guy…40 yrs Feb 24th.
Oh How can it be that hearts have wings?
That when your down and low a friends message sings.
Right to the place that awakens something inside,
To remind you of who you are,
And that all will Change with the flowing tide.
A moment, a second, a feeling of last chance,
When a sweet message brings your heart to dance.
Kicking up your heels and finding the must,
To brush off the cobwebs and clear off the dust.
The magic of that moment is dear to my heart,
And has given me this day a fresh new start.
The magic of love and life is real,
And Miss V.V. thanks for turning the wheel.
P.S. I am going to make wax paper sparkle hearts with some kidlings
today…I cannot wait to feel the magic of play.
Forever yours – in starlight dance, twirls and spins, and sweet tap – taps.
GG Pinsterita
Oh gurrrrrl – yummy looking Flan – and as usual, we’re on a similar wavelength. Yesterday I was looking online for Flan recipes to surprise my sweetie on Valentines Day. I think I’ll try your recipe instead. 🙂
Side note, thank you for your sweet message. I received it the other day and it made me have a *warm/fuzzy* moment. <3
oh wow!!! the flan looks sooooooooooo yummy! 😀 the hearts are so sweet! I think i have to make some with my little girl. Have a lovely night! 😀
I admit, I don’t think I have ever had flan. Hmm… I have way too many projects running too! (Fairies, right now is the big thing, though.) On the hearts: when I was a kid we had those trapper-keepers with plastic on the outside, and we used to scribble with colored markers on it, then layer elmer’s glue on top, which would cause the color to swirl up into the glue. When it was dry, it was see-through, and we could cut it in any shape we wanted, like hearts, and it was like a sun catcher! So much fun!
You reminded me (I think the words trapper keeper did it, haha), I
collected stickers big time as a kid- I wish I had kept all my sticker
books. I had so many cool stickers. Ahhh, the memories!!

Mmm flan! I think I like flan…it has been so long since I have had it I am not sure, but I might as well make it and find out because it looks delicious! I think we are going to exchange valentines in my office, you know like in elementary school where everyone gets one? I was going to just buy some at the store, but then I remembered that you have those adorable free printables, so my office peeps will be getting lovely Vanessa valentines this year!
Alia, make the flan, you will LOVE it. The next morning after you make it,
its even better 😉 But it is pretty darn awesome after a 2 hour chill too
😉
