From Old Patio Umbrella to Colorful Garden Goodness!

It’s about time we had some serious fun, don’t you think?

I have been cutting scraps, tying knots and standing on a ladder conjuring some up.

Of the “colorful garden contraption” variety, that is.

Colorful umbrella fun 1

Happiness for an old tattered garden umbrella.

And colorful happiness for me and the garden too.

Colorful umbrella fun 7

How on earth did this all begin you ask?

Well, truth be told, I got sick of seeing my 3 old umbrellas sitting by the workshop.

Looking majorly pitiful.

Bare bones.

And honestly, I was about to throw them out because I couldn’t find proper covers for them.

As the old covers had long turned to dust.

Plus the wood was getting all ruined.

I have had them for about 12 years, so they had a long life right?

However…

I had an idea brewing.

Colorful umbrella fun 13

In my mind, I saw a colorful garden contraption.

Yep, that’s the proper name for it me thinks 😉

Colorful umbrella fun 2

So, I took stacks of scrap fabric and ribbons and tied them on to each naked umbrella arm.

Colorful umbrella fun 4

I started from top to bottom, arm by arm, like you see below.

(make sure you tie on the ribbon + scraps when the umbrella is open and not closed)

Colorful umbrella fun 5

I tried 2 other methods, because at first I intended to actually make a new umbrella out of scraps.

But it didn’t look as festive, so then I started just tying on the fabric and it worked good.

Then I strung up an über long felt ball garland, and tied it around…

To create…

This!

My sad old umbrella skeleton is now a super happy colorful garden contraption, hoooray!

Colorful umbrella fun 3

If you could see it in person, it’s extra fun.

Mainly because each arm is covered, and you see the whole happy 3-d thing..

Colorful umbrella fun 12

It adds a much needed fresh spring spark to my garden world.

(My sis put up the dream banner, what perfect colors without intending)

Colorful umbrella fun 11

It looks great against that super blue sky, don’t you think?

Colorful umbrella fun 9

I wasn’t careful with each piece of fabric being the same length.

They were about 9″ – 12″ long, and no more than 3″ wide.

Colorful umbrella fun 15

I wasn’t careful with the color scheme either.

I just went crazy fabric times on the whole thing.

Colorful umbrella fun 16

And because, as you know, I am a lover of felt balls, remember here?

I decided to use some of my stash as a garland.

Colorful umbrella fun 19

See how easy it was to take this sad thing below…

Colorful umbrella fun 14

And turn it into this crazy happy colorful garden contraption?

Colorful umbrella fun 18

Also, I painted the wooden part white, after I had tied it all up.

I had not even thought about it before, but then thought, white would make the color pop more.

So, if you try this at home, paint first 🙂

And, as I said before, make sure you tie and garland the umbrella up while it is open at your desired level.

That way it is easy to close and open as you see below.

Colorful umbrella fun 10

We soooo needed something extra bright and happy while we wait for trees to get leaves.

Colorful umbrella fun 17

Although I have to admit…

This wild colorful thing is making me Mad Tea Party crazed.

Longing for this year’s event already.

Now, if you have an old sad patio umbrella skeleton in your garden…

I highly recommend this project.

Talk about junk to treasure.

That is, if you think gobs of colorful scraps tied together makes treasure 😉

Fun fun, in fact, you can even keep it inside it’s so pretty.

And just keep adding things to it.

How fun would that be???

Okay, off I go for now.

See you soon.

Love, V

Sparkly heart

ps:  To be honest…

I think this creation was born from me singing this for so many days in a row.

Heck, if I could spend the rest of my days making Willi Wonka garden umbrellas, I might say yes.

By the by, have you heard the arrangement for Jackie Evancho’s version?

It’s so beautiful, the instruments in that intro…. oh my…

  1. Sharon says:

Vanessa, I LOVE your umbrella! And, I do think I would keep it inside where I could enjoy it year round. All that beautiful work, it seems shame for it to get messed up by the weather, rain, etc. But, of course, you could put it out on warm, sunny days. What fun! It makes me wish I had an old umbrella so I could do the same thing. Any suggestions for another structure this project would be good for since I don’t have an umbrella?

  2. Oh! What fun!
Your re-do of the patio umbrella is so enchanting and definitely Mad Tea Party style!
And I thought about the tiny, martini cocktail paper umbrellas too…if the paper falls apart you could use tiny ribbons and scape of fabric and use the ‘bones’ of the umbrella to make tiny miniature versions of your magical idea, which would go perfect with Alice in Wonderland dolls and creatures! Brain storm for sure!
It is raining here! Yes! Raining! Yay! I hope our mountains get more snow as we need it desperately.
    Take care, fairy princess!

  5. Miss Kathy! Hi there 😉 I am glad I took the time to make the whimsical contraption, I got to use up all those scraps and it inspired me in a sort of silly fun way. Hope you are doing wonderfully 🙂

  6. Kelly says:

Vanessa, this is sooo clever, cheerful and so sustainable too! I envision Mr. Mad Hatter dancing about this vivacious umbrella while singing a mad little song! TeHeHee!!!
I personally think this umbrella looks just as great closed, like a fanciful tree. I’ll bet you were so glad you decided to keep it!
I LOVE the Dream banner your sister put up, it fits the mood perfectly! ; )

  7. Linnea-maria says:

Oh what a great idea! It looks fun and festive. Why don’t you cover the other umbrellas with white lace curtains? That will give you the perfect shade for the sun.

  8. I love it! Wonderful magical you…always bringing such whimsy to our world. <3

  9. Janet Ghio says:

this is just too fabulous and the string of felt balls with the fabric scraps is perfect!!

  21. It looks just like it came straight from Your heart.Oh to be young again.Maybe I could make a version that I could handle, something I could reach. It’s perfect for Your Spring Tea like You say 🙂

  22. Jenn says:

That is so magical! There are just certain colour combinations that are so YOU, and this is the epitome of all that! Mint and baby pink too! With dashes of red and yellow!

  23. Linda Diane says:

Hello helloooooo, Miss Vanessala! I LOVE your colorful umbrella decoration!!!
I, too, have made fabric strip garlands at my house, but they are inside. I have one over a window and one over the entryway from dining room to living room. I have considered making one for the front porch, too.
I also love felt balls! I have a couple of little garlands on the headboard of my bed. They have different sized felt balls as well as some felt flowers. I haven’t learned how to felt, so all of the felted items are purchased! They are strung on some colorful “fuzzy” yarn with spaces in between which show the different colors of the yarn.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful, fun project!
