Fairy Evening…

The end of August opens the door to a wave of garden magic.

Fairy night 10

When monsoon rain is still here, and flowers begin another spring.

Fairy night 3

The wildness of my garden is beyond words.

You’d have to stand in it to really understand the level of wild.

The winged creatures are treating it like a sanctuary, which I am so glad for.

Fairy night 4

The pumpkins are, well, they’ve taken over.

A sea of pumpkins.

I crouch down to see if there are babies…

Fairy night 1

And there are.

I’m not sure why pumpkins make me soooo happy, but they do.

Fairy night 2

It’s time to pick some of them, but the rains have brought a wonderful wave of fresh ones.

I can’t believe the stems on these.

It’s a wild place, where I rest my mind and lose myself in the happenings of the moment.

Fairy night 6

It’s like a dream.

Fairy night 5

In fact, my whole life I have dreamt of such a garden.

And while I’ve had a lovely garden at the country house for 20 years, it is open to rabbits and gophers.

The wildlife would gobble it so quickly, every day was another loss after so much work.

But this garden is safe to grow as big as it wishes, and it does.

Fairy night 7

Only winged creatures can fly in.

The yellow belly finches destroy zinnias, but that’s about it.

The quail have learned that it is safe to be here, so they fly in just as the sun starts to go down.

They fill the trees, but if I so much as tiptoe in, they frantically panic and fly off.

So, I make sure to let them sleep in peace.

Fairy night 11

As I was picking my flowers I could hear them start to gather outside the fence.

I just smiled to myself, knowing they were there.

It comforts me greatly for some reason.

Fairy night 13

The dahlias have begun, which means summer really is almost over.

Of course, it will be hot here for a while, until Halloween.

But the dahlias know.

Fairy night 8

Rainy skies and rainbows.

Fairy night 9

The giant marigolds are blooming too.

They always show up for Dia de Los Muertos.

Fairy night 12

I meant to be here a couple days ago but I was dizzy.

And so, I took some time to be kind to myself.

I often forget to be kind to myself and just forge ahead as though I’m made of steel.

Yesterday afternoon a big storm rolled in and I ran up to the loggia to sit and enjoy it.

You know those breezes that are so perfectly delicious, that you close your eyes and absorb the moment, without even noticing you are doing it?

That was me yesterday.

The rains have brought a huge field of datura to the country house, so I like to be there to watch them open in the evening.

They’re also know as moon flower, because they unfurl at night.

I was there just as they were opening night before last.

Those are the sort of magical moments that are so unbelievably wonderful.

I think I am going to make a blackberry cobbler again next.

It’s a very quiet morning, I can hear Matty gently snoring.

We got up super early to turn off all the irrigations since there was so much rain yesterday.

There was this coolness in the air, it really took my breath away.

It’s funny how when you are a gardener, the weather is your main topic 🙂

I find myself checking the weather all the time, it’s quite funny actually.

The rain has been such a tremendous gift this monsoon season.

It reminds me of huddling on the porch with my family as a child to watch it rain.

We had these long huge covered porches, and the rain would whip in from every direction.

Sometimes it would hail, and we’d jump for joy.

I can hear all the adults oohing and aahing about it in my mind, like it was just yesterday.

The voices of my grandparents and parents, saying regular things like, wow, look at all this rain, can you believe how it’s puddling?

And on and on, only in Spanish.

Spanish is such a beautiful language, there are ways to express yourself with such description and depth that does not translate to English.

There are so many descriptive words, and words that have vast meaning in just one word, that English simply does not have.

Do you know more than one language?

I think languages are so fun, and it’s great to teach children when they were young.

I learned how to play the piano when I was very young, and when I play sometimes now I think, how did I learn this?

The really interesting thing is how your fingers hold memory.

You could have totally forgotten the notes completely, but your fingers know what to do.

It’s amazing the things you can learn when you are young, that seem almost impossible as we grow older.

The one thing that is not hard to learn, and that you can do at any age at all is, growing a garden.

See how it all comes back to soil and seeds with me?

I am just planning my winter garden.

Planting seeds in August is perfect for a winter garden, especially in warmer climates like mine.

And don’t forgot to buy your poppy seeds and scatter them at the first sign of November rain.

I have mine bought and ready to go.

Well, I’m off to bake.

Thank you for stopping by, I’ll be back very soon.

Love, Vanessa

Hi Vanessa, Your garden is an unbelievable, magical fairyland! Wow wow wow, one that you have cultivated and deserve. I am so happy for you! I adore the rain, too and the smell of Petrichor is surly a part of me.
I completely agree with you, knowing different languages is an enrichment. I speak Spanish as well, I am very proud of my heritage!
Love to hear about the little creatures in your garden. Sometimes, I hear the quails in my back hills and it sounds like they are saying “Chicago…Chicago…!!!” Love those little critters and their babies.
Thank you, Vanessa for sharing your enchanting garden! Wishing everlasting daydreams in your Oasis! Take care hun!
P.S. I watched the “Fantastic Fungi” on Netflix last night. It’s was amazing! Thank you!

Great to see you continuing to post after your challenge ended. I’ve loved having so many posts of yours to read (even if I’ve hardly commented on them at all). Sometimes you do need to step away to take care of yourself though, so I’m also glad you did that.
I love rain and storms. Which is lucky, since we get a lot of rain in Wales as a general rule. And, yes, I can speak more than one language… I speak both English and Welsh, plus know a few words and phrases of French (though my pronounciation of the latter leaves a lot to be desired, and I understand French better than I actually speak it).

This was really lovely Vanessa., it is always a pleasure to hear other gardeners, speak about their treasured gifts (this is how I see my plants…little treasures). I love the scent of the 1st rain, after a period of no rain, it’s fresh and invigorating, it feeds and cleans everything, even our senses…
…it also brings back joyous memories of my childhood, jumping in the new puddles…what fun that was…not so fun was the occasional puddle that was a bit deeper that I had thought, and the coldness of the water oozing inside by boots. I often wonder why? why as an adult we stop jumping in puddles?? (I’m giggling, yes I still giggle) thinking that indulging in jumping into puddles could be on the agenda when our next rain comes…”would it still be lots of fun??” the child within me says “yesss!!”
Time to end this and make a cup of coffee, take care and keep safe 🙂

Good morning, I miss the happier days of blogging and you were and are my go to.
Your garden is as beautiful as ever and the peacefulness in your post delightful.
Glad to see all is well in your magical land. Thank you for being steadfast.

Your garden is glorious…oh, the flowers!! I grew zinnias and dahlias for the first time this year and they’ve taken my breath away.
And I literally laughed out loud when you mentioned repeatedly checking the weather forecast! I’m a bit obsessed. I actually had to take my weather app off my phone for a while because it was getting to be a bit of an issue. :D. It’s just, they promise rain and then change their mind….

  6. Thank you so much!!! I am so glad you watched Fantastic Fungi and enjoyed it! That is soooo funny about the quail, I will have to see where mine say they are coming from, hee hee 😉 <3

  7. I am so glad you have enjoyed the posts Tori, that means a lot to me. Just the encouragement I need to keep typing, and editing photos, and posting 😉
Languages are beautiful, I will have to look up the sounds of the Welsh language. I speak Spanish, rotten French (although I was much better when younger, as I am part French and thought I should know it), and a few words in a couple other languages. It’s so much fun!
I love rain and storm too <3

  8. Jumping in puddles it is!!! I’m up for the task, as I run through the rain until I am soaking wet. I so agree with you, the treasures of our garden. The rain has been beyond words <3 <3

  9. Thank you Debi, that means the world to me. I am so glad you still come here. I am trying to incorporate back into my life on the more regular. Knowing you enjoy it inspires me <3

  10. We will have to start a group to get through our need to check the weather obsessively 🙂 That is so funny! Zinnias and Dahlias are my go-to reliable flowers of choice here. I am soooo delighted you are enjoying them so well <3 <3

i just love your garden posts… i would love to spend an afternoon and evening with you in your garden. i bet i could learn so much! i took french in high school, but had to drop in the first semester so they moved me to spanish. i just could not grasp the pronunciations and all. i have a hard enough time speaking english! haha
but i’ve always wanted to learn welsh.
    anywhoo…enjoy your garden time!
    love, kisses & magical wishes…
    ~*~
    ps…hugs & kisses to Matty!

  12. As I get older I am amazed that I learned anything at all, because it seems monumental to learn another language or career and such. Funny how things start to shift in that way. Thank you, we are enjoying our garden, I hope you are well too Miss Laura <3
