Doodle Egg Head Cascarones (One for you?)

Let’s make doodley cascarones, whattaya say?

Arty egg 21a

First of all, you might ask, what is a cascaron?

What are cascarones?

Well, as part of Mexican tradition, during Easter we fill hollowed out eggs with confetti and crack them on eachother’s head (be careful with that part).  You can use them for other celebrations as well, and if you want more details you can read about cascarones here.

As I was looking at some white eggs in the fridge, rare in our house since the local chickens always gift beautiful blues and browns – I thought, hey, that white is perfect for drawing on!  I should make some doodled cascarones for Easter this year.

So, I jumped right in, and had a blast…

Now, one should note that you can either fill up colored hollowed eggs with confetti and seal the bottoms, or you can create a decorated cone, with the egg on top, and tons of confetti inside, like I made here.

Fanciful cascaron

For these doodley cascarones, I chose no cone, and more drawing and paint.

All you need are hollowed out eggs.  I basically make a hole in the bottom of fresh eggs I am using with the end of a fork or knife.  I pull out the broken piece, and then plop my eggs into bowls to use.

Then I use very hot water to rinse out the eggshell, and I spray in a little clorox clean-up spray.  I follow that up with a little dish soap, more hot water, lots of rinsing, and then I let them dry thoroughly.

Arty egg 1a

You are left with a perfect little vessel for filling up with anything you want.

I picked up a regular #2 pencil, and started doodling on my hollowed out eggs.

A Humpty Dumpty face…

Arty egg 2a

A cute little gal…

Arty egg 3a

Even use some for messages.

And, since sayings and quotes and song snippets are all the rage on posters these days, you can use your egg for all sorts of fun wordage, verbage…

Arty egg 4a

I mostly loved doodling the faces, I didn’t want to stop…

Arty egg 5a

I made a small grouping – and then got on with the decorating part.

Arty egg 6a

But first, I needed some confetti.

So, I cut paper into strips, and then little pieces.

A great thing to do while watching television.  I just discovered Grey’s Anatomy, I know last person on earth, but I have no cable in the country (by choice).  I have 137+ episodes to watch on Netflix, and am loving it for confetti cutting times, and more.  No commercials, one right after the other, awesome!

Arty egg 7a

I also used a little scrapbook paper to make some owlie details below.

Arty egg 11a

Just cut out a little piece for ears and wings, and then you can sit back and love your wee owling! I used tiny dabs of hot glue to adhere the pieces.

Arty egg 13a

I also used some everyday acrylic craft paint mixed with a little water to paint my eggs.

I am absolutely crazy about pencil lines showing in art, so this really hit the spot…

Arty egg 14a

The acrylic paint took to the egg heads like a dream!

Arty egg 20a

So, doodling and a little paint –

Arty egg 28a

And you have some ultra fun little cascarones –

Arty egg 29a

For your Easter festivities.

Although, you can also use these for birthdays, weddings and more.

Any event really.

With millions of ways to decorate them.

Arty egg 30a

Oh, one other things is that, I like to use eggs to hide all sorts of things in for lots of events.  I make a lot of eggs filled with little gifts, and always forget to take photos.

I decided to fill these cascarones not only with homemade confetti, but with little sayings or wishes.

Arty egg 15a

During the holidays I put tiny gifts and sayings in eggs that I have covered in craft glue and glitter.  These are great for all sorts of occasions, and add a spark of fun.

Arty egg 16a

Anyhow, get your little smattering of things you will fill your eggs with together…

Arty egg 17a

And then fill them up…

Arty egg 18a

I cut out scalloped circles to seal the bottoms.

I ran some hot glue around the little circles, and then gently pressed them around the egg opening to seal it up.

Arty egg 19a

Just like so…

Arty egg 31a

I also used a little spray glitter on my finished eggs.

The pencil didn’t hardly smear at all, and once it was painted it really didn’t smear.

Arty egg 21a

I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t have fun making these.  I am itching to make more.  Doodling for no reason, plus painting and glittering to your heart’s content is what I call wild abandon crafting.  And that, that is the best sort of crafting.  No rhyme, no reason.  Nothing is bad.  It’s all in good fun.

You just can’t go wrong.

Arty egg 22a

Unless of course, you make one as your mother-in-law, and then proceed to crack it on her head.

Besides that, you just can’t go wrong, I don’t think?

Arty egg 23a

You can even whip up some paper cone hats…

Arty egg 26a

Or, make some little ears.  Just cut circles, then cut a little pie piece out of the circle, close the open gap with a dab of glue –

Arty egg 9a

And you have mouse ears…

Arty egg 32a

Doodley Egg Head Cascarones…

Arty egg 27a

You can even save one, to crack on a super special occasion.

These are extra fun for graduations and such.

And, them being extra detailed, makes it harder for someone to want to crack it.

But, that’s the whole thing, you see.

Cracking them is the name of the game.

And, if you fill them with wishes or fortunes plus confetti, there is a bonus inside.

Arty egg 33a

So easy to make.

And you don’t have to deal with eating a bazillion hard-boiled eggs.

🙂

I will be giving a few of these away.

I’ll choose recipients at random from any comments, and names drawn can choose which one they want.

YAY!

A little Easter fun.

But remember, you can make cascarones for any reason.

They so liven up the party.

I am off to make more more more.

I feel an obsession coming on 😉

Love, V

A sparkly heart

ps:  I am having a hard time getting used to the spell check auto correct.  So, forgive me if some word looks way off, or out of place, auto correct tends to do this.  Some slip by me for some reason.

pss:  If you don’t have time to make, remember there are printable egg head wrappers I am sharing with you, right here

  1. Naomi says:

So..So..so much fun! What a wonderful idea. Between you and I, I never look forward to the idea of wasting a bunch of boiled eggs. I love coloring them, but, for me, they never come out the way I want them them to.
And who doesn’t like to Doodle? Thanks for sharing such a fun idea. I am looking forward to sharing this idea with my daughter.

  2. Stephanie says:

I spent a warm windy day blowing bubbles to the east and dying Easter eggs with my kids. Sebastian’s hands are currently peony pink and Lily’s are rainbow colored. I showed her your pretty little eggs and she decided we must create them. We have our day planned tomorrow. And looks like there will be quite a lot of baking following the cascarones!

  3. Christina says:

My goodness you are SUCH a genius! Such beautiful works of art, so delightful thanks for sharing all of these! 🙂

  4. Jenn says:

Such little fragile works of art! Beautiful little pieces Vanessa!
My only question, and it might be a stupid one but… since you cleaned them so thoroughly, how long do they last? Do they even go bad after that? It would be lovely if they lasted forever (assuming they don’t break of course.

  5. Renee says:

    Adorable. What a cute idea.
I’ll have to remember these for next year.

  6. Your doodling is so much fun on these eggs! These are better than fortune cookies!
Thank you for sharing this really amazing tradition! The owl is adorable!!!!!!!
    Miss Teresa

These are beautiful, too lovely to break, I’d put my name in for one but I don’t think you’d be able to send it to Australia … the owl one was my favourite.
    🙂

  11. Nathalie Gagnon says:

Happy Easter Vanessa! So happy you are feeling better! Will you make some for the furbabies?

Oh my Miss Vanessa, These are amazing. It is so very hard to choose just one. I love them all. If I win one I think that I would let you choose for me. You always make such wonderous art. The one I keep coming back to look at is the one with the cone hat. She makes me smile. Thank you for sharing.

  18. Alia says:

    Aw, these are the cutest!

  19. Super cute tutorial, sis!
I used to love cracking these on peoples’ heads, until someone cracked one on my head and it hurt!
I always loved it when there was glitter scattered in with the confetti, bc then I had glitter in my hair for days after the cascarones had been cracked!

  20. Jill James says:

Only you would open the refrigerator, see plain white eggs, and come up with works of art! My daughter has a pink wig she wears – that egg looks like her….
I am making coconut cupcakes in a minute & decorating them with your printouts from last year. Thank you for your generous spirit………

  21. Dawn says:

I remember taking a field trip with my middle school class to Olvera Street downtown in Los Angeles and they had these colorful cascarones. We all bought them and cracked them on each other, much to our enjoyment and the teacher’s displeasure. Thanks for bringing back that memory Vanessa! Have a lovely Easter weekend 🙂

  22. Oh me loves! BIG love. Too cute-cute. With moving and moving, sadly I have missed the holidays since January, but not the spirit, especially of Easter. I shall save this for next year, when all of my grandbabies will be back in Arizona and we shall have great, Fanciful fun.

  27. OH mY GOSH!!!
I just forwarded your post to 6 creative people who will freak out!
So cute! I am inspired for next year!!!

  28. Sarah says:

These are very cute! I like using eggs to make shakers with rice or other small things-lentils or something. I use ones we have eaten, wash and dry them, then seal them with collaged tissue paper. But hollowing them out like you have done here is a good idea and I will try that too. Happy Easter to you all!

  29. Linda Diane says:

Oh, I love these so much, Vanessa! I am glad you had such fun with them. Since I have won something from you before, I will withdraw my name from consideration so that someone else can have the joy!

  30. Jorgelina says:

    Divinos!
    Una gran y original idea.

  31. Retta says:

This looks like so much fun! I’ll have to put it on my crafty to do list 🙂
On another note, I was cruising pictures on facebook, and saw the cutest fairy wagon, and thought of you. Here’s the link:

  32. Pamela says:

Happy Easter! I had never heard of these – they are adorable and full of delights!
Thank you for sharing the beauty with us!

  33. Chris says:

Sweetie V, here’s the deal: THESE are genius! I thought I had something going with my doodled eggs, but THIS is INTERACTIVE!! I must do this. I’m still making eggs, and I don’t care if it’s no longer officially Easter. It’s officially spring! So, there.
I think we should have some kind of cascarone for May day. A round hollow ball with flowers drawn all over it? A tiny Chinese lantern which can be used afterward? I must check this out. I may just fill a half-gallon orange juice carton with confetti and let people pour that into their glasses as a surprise! Of course, I’d have to weigh down the bottom of the carton so it feels like it’s got juice in it. hmmm…
This is what makes life grand. Thinking up little confetti tricks.

  34. stephanie says:

hope you had a happy Easter! I showed this to greg…he made these as a kid…and says thanks for the memory 🙂
    x…x

  35. Dawn McDonald says:

What fun…not only will we be making them next year, but Halloween, the 4th of July, Birthdays, just because. Thanks for the insiration!

  36. Theresa says:

So sorry I missed this!!!! 🙁 These are absolutely enchanting!!!! I so adore the girl with pink hair, the mouse and especially the owl!!!! Thank you for sharing how to make these. Maybe next year, I will get doodly! xoxo Hope you had a lovely Easter holiday with your family. 🙂

  37. KatieJ says:

These are so beautiful! Thanks for sharing, I love this idea and can’t wait to try some!

  38. WOW just what I was searching for. Came here by searching for quotes about love

  39. Susie says:

I knew it! I just knew it! I cannot come visit without going click-link crazy! No matter how often I look at the same thing, I always see something different about it! My son moved his family to the other side of the country, so my grandbabies are gradually losing their whimsy.
Then I saw these…for Halloween…as in “Trick” or “Treat”, and since I am the “messy, noisy, silly” granny…
I plan on dying the eggs shades of purple, orange, green and decorating for Halloween. I will write “Trick” on paper to place inside some that have only confetti and such, “Treat” will be wrapped around a dollar bill in other eggs.
I will make tons of these, and the eggs not used right away will be beaten, measured out, and frozen.
Oh, I feel such a surge of positive energy…I may clean the broken pieces by putting them in a jar and shaking them to clean them…color them…and use them as part of the decorating! You know what they say about “Waste not…”
Bless You and Yours for igniting my spark. Love, Susie, Port Huron, Michigan, USA
