Cuz, we are Living in a Hummingbird World, and I am a Hummingbird Girl?

I am still spending 70% of my days outside, big hat and billowing gowns a plenty.  I am painting a ton, planting hundreds of seeds, and even watching dozens of re-planted sunflowers sprout (the birds got them the first time around).  All of this occurs, while the 40 year old giant rose bushes silently bloom, and pups lollygag in the pool…

Hummingbird bliss 24

But wait, I left out the most amazing part.  There are a handful of hummingbirds living in my garden.  Usually there are 3 – 4, but this year there are more.

Hummingbird bliss 22

And let me tell you, they are friendly as can be.  (I think they might be babies)

Hummingbird bliss 21

All the photos I will share were taken with a regular lense, not a telefoto lense.

Hummingbird bliss 20

This is because, these little guys not only come up to me and flutter right in front of my face, but they let me walk up to them so close that I can ever so gently touch a feather, and thank them for visiting my garden…

Hummingbird bliss 23

This morning, one even came up to my screen door and chattered and chattered.  I am floored at their behavior.  Last year a tiny guy sat on my toe and I was floored.  But, these little creatures this year, are actually following us around and chattering up a storm…

Hummingbird bliss 27

I will tell you this.  8 years ago I found a beautiful hummingbird that had lost its life, in a bed of green vines in the garden.  So, I put it in a glass case and buried it.  Then I painted little bird houses with hummingbirds on them, and nailed them to the tree in the sanctuary, and started a hummingbird cemetery.

Perhaps they know that we want them to be safe?  And, they are drawn here.  Possibly, maybe?

Hummingbird bliss 13

Mister Lovee makes them an all natural beverage for their feeder several times a week.  And, when it gets low, they fly up to the window Mister sits at, and flutter in front of him…

Hummingbird bliss 12

If I see them, and Mister doesn't, I always say, "Oh Lovee, your little friends are looking for you…"

Hummingbird bliss 1

Oh and, they LOVE flying through my water hose when I am watering the pumpkin sprouts.

Hummingbird bliss 28

They think that is the funnest thing ever.  They all come out and play…

Hummingbird bliss 9

I don't know, I find it completely enchanting.  They just take my breath away, I love them…

Hummingbird bliss 2

When I am out in the garden planting seeds and checking on growing seeds, I always say to the pups (as they are always by my side watching me), "We have big dreams, big dreams…"

Our big dreams are that all the seeds that I planted, grow.  Or at least some of them.  I have created 8 little seed planted areas.  And, I have planted hundreds and hundreds of seeds.  From flowers to herbs to vegetables.  Fingers crossed…

Hummingbird bliss 17

There is a lot of lovely natural vegetation that is already growing here, but I so love seeing sunflowers, and pumpkins, and beets, and radishes, and all sorts of extra things grow as well.  In my opinion, there is nothing like watching your tender little seeds grow…

Hummingbird bliss 16

Baby's anti-inflammatory medication for her tumor (don't you loathe that word? makes my stomach flip inside out) seems to be helping.  She is sneezing less, and has not had regular bloody noses.  She is trying so hard to play, and run a little.  Of course, we can't cure her, but we just want her to be as comfortable as possible.  And perhaps a miracle might cure her.  One can hope for a miracle…

We have found her sitting at the fence way out back, looking out onto the never ending green, quite pensively.

I have also found her in the sanctuary.  Where the sight of her there, has left me quite speechless…

Hummingbird bliss 10

She is an amazing gal.

Sometimes, when she feels like she can't breathe, she gets scared and starts to gasp.  So, I get on ground with her, and tell her, "I love you, everything is okay, breathe and feel calm, I am here, you will be okay…" while gently petting her.  And it works.  She instantly calms down.

I have been composing a song for her, for a couple of months, and I add more to it every day.  Maybe I can share it soon…

Hummingbird bliss 6a

I have a lot of peace in my soul these days.  Baby shows me that I need to be strong for her.  And, I know that I am learning great lessons for the future as well.  For experiences to come with other loved ones…

Hummingbird bliss 26

When I am gardening, she always comes up to me, puts her paw on me, and nuzzles her head on to my lap.  She would sit on top of me if she could.  And, she shamelessly urges you to rub her belly.  So I giggle, and do it.  I always have.  She knows she can find love right here, any time, day or night…

Hummingbird bliss 15

Part of the reason that I feel such peace is that, I realized that I have always loved her 100%.  So I don't feel like I am grasping for time with her, I feel like I am enjoying time with her, as we always have.

Hummingbird bliss 25

Yet another lesson.  To appreciate loved ones all the time.  I personally don't like regrets, and try to live my life in a way where I won't say "I wish I had done this, or said that…"

Oh oh, we received a scrumptious care package this week from a wonderful, genuine fairy 😉

Hummingbird bliss 5

Baby looooved it, and she shared with little brother too…

Hummingbird bliss 3

Fancy puppy cookies (amongst oodles of other treats), yummmy!  Matty chose his…

Hummingbird bliss 11

While Baby adored her yogurt treat…

Hummingbird bliss 4

Treats for Mister and I filled the box as well.  Dear wonderful fairy (you know who you are), Mister ate "his" jelly sugar candies in one day.  I snagged 3;)  (needless to say, the entire family was delighted and thankful to the core)

As for creativity, I have been up to my neck in paint.  I am having a wonderful time creating some fun pieces and finishing up my deadline…

Hummingbird bliss 8

And guess what?  I have a secret that includes you.  A secret fantastical world to share.  It is almost ready for you to begin to enter…

Hummingbird bliss 18

And, I needn't even say the words about what I am speaking of, right?…

Hummingbird bliss 19

All I can tell you is that, in a few days, something wickedly wonderful, this way comes…

In wonderland 8

Oh yes….

In wonderland 16

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I can't wait…

In wonderland 5

With a surprise too!  Or should I say, A Fanciful, Twist….

Oh by the way, several folks have asked me if the name of my little art production, shop and blog is "Fanciful Twist" or "A Fanciful Twist."  It is "A Fanciful Twist"

Without the "A" it isn't me 😉

Anyhow, there is soooooo much fun to come, dress-up and madness abound!  I can't wait.  I bet you thought I was only going to talk about nature from here on 😉 (although, I am pretty nature obsessed, I can't lie)

Hummingbird bliss 7

Don't throw out your teal and fuchsia striped stockings just yet – we have so much more wacky work to do 😉

Fanciful 1

But, for now, I will leave you with Dave Matthews.  (Am I the most random blog post writer or what?  I even freak myself out, don't worry.  Sometimes I go back and say, I wrote that?  Oh my gooodnessss… tee heee…)

Anyhow, Dave Matthews has been over for tea everyday this week.  Okay okay, he doesn't know he was here.  But I can pretend really good you know 😉

The thing is, I found this beloved cd in my old player (I forgot it was in there), and was delighted.  So, I have been listening to this album on repeat for days (including now).  We love Dave.

Now, I must bribe myself into getting back to work…

You are truly one of the most amazing women, artists and humans I have ever come across.
You have taken a very difficult time and found a way to sort through it and learn from the goodness.
I believe the Hummingbirds are specifically being “sent” to you and Mr. Lovee. It can’t be an accident.
There’s another point I want to touch on, only because I know all too well the sting of loss. My dad passed away in my home on hospice in 2003. My mom just passed away last June. I had never really experienced loss at the time my dad died. I had no experience with it. I was better prepared when my mom died. Each loss in our lives is different and they never, ever become easier….BUT, through the losses, you gain knowledge, experience, love and heart. In a way, Baby is helping you to gain strength. To help pave the way for other losses…you’re right about that.
If I were a Hummingbird in Arizona, I’d make my home with you and Mr. Lovee as well.

You can call me childish or pathetic, but this post really touched me and made me think…and it also made me cry…

  5. I am trying to write a comment, but your post has rendered me rather speechless. Your hummingbirds are amazing! What sweet little creatures to play with. And I love reading about Baby. While my heart breaks because of her illness, it also jumps for joy at the amazing bond that only dogs can share with us. I can tell that your bond with her is something very special. You have reminded me of what it is like to have a dog (we just have 2 cats right now). There is really nothing like it! Thank you for such enchanting photos and words!

  6. Love the humming bird photos!!! They are amazing. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Also, can not wait for that great announcement to come. I so look forward to all of your posts 🙂
    Warm Hugs….

As always a wonderful post…Your talent amazes me. From your words to your art and then on to photography.
I haven’t been able to put out my hummingbird feeders yet. The reason is we live in Michigan and the weather is unpredictable. Yesterday it was sunny and 80 degrees, today is another story it is very windy and the temp is 58. I can’t wait til my beautiful birds come back. Thank you so much for your inspirations.
Can’t wait for your announcement…I am excited.

  11. I am not surprised at all at the antics of your hummingbird family members. They recognize magic when they see it.
That picture of Baby with her head on your lap is really the sweetest thing. I am sending you squeezes right through the screen! Thank you for sharing the lovely pictures of your garden. Discovered that I have daffodils in one little spot in my new landscape. Magical discovery! Enjoy the day Miss V!

  12. Linda says:

Vanessa, tears came to my eyes when you told how you talk Baby through her “can’t breath” panic moments. That is the sweetest. I loved your talking about your hummingbirds and seeing their beautiful pictures. I was touched at your care for a little lifeless hummingbird. I am so looking forward to the enchantment of the tea party!

  14. Sarah says:

    Hi Vanessa,
Sometimes reading your posts is like coming round for a cup of tea and having one of those rambling conversations where things link to each other and all of it is interesting and good and you find things in common and share smiles and happy things. I absolutely love your humming birds. The birds in my garden are so important to me and I am so happy when one comes to sing there, or a new one comes to visit.
I loved what you wrote about Baby and it makes me happy that you feel peace about how things are. And as for the magical thing to come, well I haave already been thinking about it and having vague ideas for fun things to make and do.
Aah to have a cup of tea in your lovely garden would be such fun! x

  15. those hummingbird pictures just blew me away.
and i cried (again) hearing you talk about baby. you have obviously given her the most beautiful life! she is very lucky.
oh, and of course, i know that you know the hummingbirds totally know you love them too. that’s why they feel so safe with you….
i do miss the country sometimes. no hummingbirds in our neighborhood 🙁

  16. eeeeeeeeeeeep
    those little birds!!! 😮
    and you can pet them!
    Magical.
lots of love to you and baby and birds and everyone.

  17. Of course dear one, they come to you because you are fae. You treasure your existence, those in it, that around you and you show us all with the sparkle that is a faery. I love the colors and love of those photos. The hummingbirds just love to be close. You are living the faerytale and following in the footsteps of the darlings written about before you. I jest not sunshine. I jest not. I send love and blessings and I feel the gift of knowing your friendship down to my toes. Bless you.

  18. Charlotte says:

I was a little nervous visiting you today; fearful that the good-bye had come. But I see that you are in a place of acceptance with no regrets. The best place to be. Your hummingbird family is there for you, as are we. Hugs. Charlotte

  19. linda says:

My dear, those are fabulous photos … can’t believe you can catch a hummingbird with a regular camera…I can barely follow them with my eyes!

  20. The picture of Baby in the Sanctuary just floored me too. <3

  21. Laura S. says:

Amazing pictures of your hummingbirds. I got teary eyed at sweet Baby in the sanctuary. Please give her a big hug from me!

  22. Oh me oh my V, we are sooo nature obsessed too! I think your place is so wonderful and I love to visit all of your sites with you 😉 Those hummingbirds are amazing, your photos are wonderful (you should submit them to ‘National Geographic’ or something, tee hee). So glad you are enjoying your time outside and Baby is seeming to feel a bit better. Big hugs to you all!
    Jamie 🙂
p.s. still looooooove my banner, thank you very much 😉 The others are wonderful too of course!

  23. Bella Dreams says:

If anyone lives in a world filled with magic and miracles, it’s you! I am sure that you will get your miracle, it may not be the one that you are hoping for, but your Baby will leave you with a better understanding of the way of things. I know this from my own life experiences. And I can tell from reading your beautiful post, that you do too.

  24. Maggi says:

Those hummingbirds are enchanting! And the Hatter has been there! Yippee!!!!
My thoughts are with your Baby!

  25. Kylee says:

    V~
    I’m speechless :):(
I’m sending happy thoughts your way!!

  26. I am so busy of late that I don`t visit often enough!!!! Miss you! Thinking of you…..

  27. Nicki says:

Wow! So many beautiful colorful picturs, I always have fun when I stop at your blog! I once had to free a poor humming bird that got caught in our blackberry netting – I was so scared it would get injured or die on me while I tried to save it, but he squeezed through a hole finally and flew away poor little guy. We bought a feeder last year, made our homemade syrup for it…and never got around to putting it up because we kept arguing on the best spot – so dumb. I better go dig out the feeder and make some syrup and actually DO it this year!!

  28. Did you know that a group of hummingbirds is called a Charm? I thought you would enjoy knowing that!

  29. WrightStuff says:

I’m all stressed this morning as I prepare for the first creative retreat I have ever attended – let alone organised! I’m so nervous – but suddenly I knew what would calm me down… a fanciful visit to Vanessa and her magical garden filled with critters and flowers and fairy dust. Ah… feel much calmer now… Thanks xx

  30. karen cox says:

    Dear Vanessa,
I was so sorry to hear about Baby. My friend Joyce, at Nanas Little Hobby, told me. We always talk about how amazing you are and how we love your posts. Those hummingbird photographs are brilliant by the way, cards would be so enchanting with those photographs, don’t you think? Well, I will say a prayer for a miracle.
    Karen

  31. Vanessa, I am praying for Baby. I believe in miracles. The love you two have for one another touches my heart so. I am looking forward to your next big announcement! I think I know what it is!!! Have a nice weekend! Twyla

  32. Georganna says:

Beautiful pictures and lovely post. Wishing all the best to your Baby! You’re so brave and have such a wonderfully positive outlook.
Your beautiful hummingbirds remind of the time (years ago) when one of my littles found a baby hummingbird that had fallen from its nest. Well, you know the old wives tale that says a mother bird will abandon a baby of hers it it’s been touched by a human, right? We decided we didn’t believe that. So, we put the little bird in a nest inside an old birdcage, propped the door open (so the mom could get in) and tied it way up high on the front porch (to keep cats out!). The mom happily found her baby and flew in and out of the little bird cage taking care of her baby — day after day — until one day, he was strong enough to fly away with her, Yay! Our bird rescue stories didn’t always end so happily, buy so happy this one did!
    Blessings,
    G

  33. Molly says:

My mom went to a birthday party one summer afternoon and she had the most delightful story to tell me of it. There they were sitting outside, enjoying the breeze and a slice of cake when all these big bumblebees started buzzing around them – BUT! – they weren’t bumblebees at all, they were baby hummingbirds! I so wish I could have seen them.
I have a few living in my garden as well and when I sit on the deck and drink my morning tea they chase after each other and chatter sass back and forth and it always makes me smile.
Your garden is looking quite amazing! And I love to hear about your darling furry girl, even though I have to sit here with tissues while I do it.

  34. Chrissi says:

My heart flutters just as fast as those little hummingbird wings, when I read and thus, immerse myself in your beautiful world. I just adore you little Miss V!

  35. Rhonda Roo says:

I keep sending Babylove good sparkling juju.
Love your hummingbirds-we have 3! Do you see different personalities? We call one Bogey and he buzzes around your head to let you know he’s around.
What does Mr Lovee use? Cowboy prefers the sugar-water dye thing cuz he tried it /o the dye and they just arent sure…but i worry about red dye!
I posted because i felt guilty about not doing your lovely banner and sidebars and fonts and color schemes justice after getting an honorable mention. I really do love it!
OH! And you made me laugh with that title-I have been singing “Ash Ash Baby, Icelandic Ash Ash Baby” for a couple of days now..before that it was Def Leepards “Wisteria (in your ear)”.
    Kookyness….
    XOXOXOVVVXOXOXOX

  36. Cindy says:

Tears fell on the cat in my lap as I read your post. My best wishes to you and Baby.
You have a beautiful view of this life. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  37. what a post! you’ve outdone even yourself.
the hummingbird shots are marvelous – we had a hummingbird swarm in our garden once. I’ll never forget it. Hundreds of them arrived in one flight – stayed about five minutes – and all took off together again. It was breathtaking.
Of course, now I’ve got Madonna in my head and may never forgive you for that. 🙂

  38. Annie says:

Hi. I found you through Kj. This is an amazing post. I love hummingbirds and what a beautiful gift you’ve been given. I will be checking back on Baby and I will be believing in a miracle for her. xoxo

I think you are right about life. One must enjoy it and be with the people (and furry babies too 😉 ) you love and do the things you like to do, no matter what happens.
Oh and I can’t just wait for the Mad Tea Party!!!!!
I hope that Baby feels much better(fingers crossed)
    Lots of Love,
    Nicole

  40. Shell says:

The Hummingbirds know you are a good friend to them which is why they come so close to. Like all good friends, we know we never have to be afraid of them.
I believe in miracles..who knows what will occur.
I’m glad you are enjoying life my friend and diving into your creativity.

  41. Theresa says:

    Dear Vanessa,
I was SO enchanted with this amazingly beautiful post. Those hummingbirds are so beautiful. And the tales of which you told can only truly mean one thing…they recognize you for who you are – a loving and caring faerie queen! That could only be the reason. I believe animals and wildlife can sense safety and love. This is why they flock to you in your magic garden. I am delighted to hear that the medicine is helping to ease Baby’s pain. Give her a big hug from me. It is wonderful to believe in miracles…without them, we would be lost.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and know that we are with you! xoxo Theresa

  42. Julie H-J says:

Beautiful and truly magical. My pups and I are sending you and yours our good vibes.

  43. Marie Zeleny says:

Hummingbirds can be particularly hard to photograph well. You did an amazing job!!
OK…you look rather young, but a long time ago there was a band called Seals and Crofts. They sang a song about a Hummingbird. It is one of my favorites and every since I heard that song, Hummingbirds came to symbolize the joyous Spirit of Creator… even though….
Hummingbirds can be rather mean!! LOL
    Best Wishes!!

  44. Jill James says:

    Dearest Vanessa,
We are so sorry to hear of Baby’s illness. I am so, so glad you are working outside to be with them. Arizona is so beautiful this time of year and being outside in the springtime must be healing in its own way. In reading comments here from your other blog friends, I can only say that I agree with them in that I believe the hummingbirds are there with you now for a reason.
I admire you for your strength and courage and we are sending you, your Mr. Lovee, Matty and especially Baby our love.
Please count me in for your tea party…
    Betty

Not sure what to comment on, so much content in this post! Let me preface my comment by doling out much warranted kudos to you for the Journey to Jordan banner-fabbie. All. The. Way.
I’ll click through to see the others. I promise. 🙂
Oh! Dave Matthews Band 🙂 xoxoxo Love em!
And hummingbirds too. Well-one lunch hour many years ago while I was studying to do my spa stuff-I used to take my lunch and walk around the block while I ate it!!! I had a little hummingbird keep me company. It was hilarious…he used to stop when I stopped. Look me in the eye. Then if I walked he would fly right beside me. He let me get up close and whisper sweet nuthings in his little fluffy ear. I adored that bird. When it got cold I didn’t see him anymore but I would wish him good vibes and send them along to his nest…wherever that was! lol
    xoxoxo

Your experiences with the Hummingbirds is my dream. I live in the CA high desert on an acre. I’m planting roses and plants that hummingbirds love. I’m retiring in June, after 34 years of teaching special education, and I am looking so forward to being able to enjoy the simple things in life on a daily basis.
You’re so right about being able to let go when you appreciate those you love on a daily basis. There are no regrets.
Your blog always bring me Peace and Joy.

Oh Vanessa, I had a million things to say about your magical photos of the flowers and the hummingbirds, but the photo of Baby sitting at the sanctuary just left me speechless and in tears. Beautiful. I will come back later and look again…perhaps knowing it is there, it won’t take my breath away. All my love to you, Deb

Baby. She’s such a wise soul…and so sweetly complete and beautiful.
    sigh.
Those little cheeky birds! Don’t you just ADORE them?! I have so many conversations with my winged friends…I was standing totally talking to a raven the other day, who was sitting in a tree at Foolsewoode. I do believe he was flirting with me…and my doves, that come and perch and sing to me and let me know that everything is OK…and remind me of all the help I have. I tell you V, we are VERY lucky to have so much beauty around us!

The hummingbirds are so beautiful! Last year we had a mom nest in an orange tree just outside my office window…so I watched her flitter back and forth building the nest…then I saw the eggs…then the babies…what fun! Have you watched “life” on discovery yet…wonderful, amazing series. Hugs to your doggies and you.

Wow, those hummingbird photos with a regular camera lens! I’m amazed. They are so cool.
I’m glad that the meds are helping baby and I’ll be hoping and praying for a pup miracle.

I have been on a journey. A fantastical journey were hummingbirds flit and fly around and have ever so much fun. And there, hosting an event of biblical proportions is a large shaggy blond friend named Baby. Master of ceremonies and donning a hat. Everyone is clothed in magic and dancing to music only they can hear. What a glorious place! Full of light and color!! Where miracles happen everyday!
    Hugging you all

    hello vanessa,
you may not remember me, but I have followed you, left comments now and again, for years (blog, flickr, etc). Such a random miracle that I followed a link to this post today via jennie doh’s tweet and your tweet, to here! (JUST started to twitter :D) And I am SO GLAD I did.
Your post was magical, as always. Not only does your art shimmer.. your SOUL shimmers! Your words touched me so deeply about your precious hummingbirds, the sanctuary you’ve created and your beloved Baby. I wish you strength and so much love on your journey together. Sounds as if it’s been a wonderful ride and continues to be.
When you have a sec, please peek at my blog post about my (now) cat angel, Satch and the new babies that magically found their way to me. A happy ending if there ever was one!
A friend recently told me that birds are special messengers (mine are bluebirds) because they exist, in flight, between our world and the heavens. They bridge the gap, if you will, and connect us to those that have gone on before us. I just LOVE that analogy!
Looking forward to keeping in touch. i believe we are FB friends, as well.
    All my love,
    – vicki xo
