Collecting Glass

I don't know why, but I really enjoy collecting glass jars/bottles, and bits of pretty broken glass…

Collecting glass 4

I love the different shapes and sizes that household glass jars come in, and when Mister Lovee brings home treats from the store held in glass, I get sort of excited (olive oil, seltzer water).  Planning the soaking and washing in my mind (after we use the contents of course).

(I have been itching to get a hold of the cobalt blue sherry bottle for years, alas, the using up of the sherry is slow, or rather, non-existent)

I have jars I like to drink out of (jam & pasta sauce jars).  And jars I like to use decoratively…

Collecting glass 15

Every now and then, you find a real treasure…

Collecting glass 1

I like to soak my jars in dish-washing soap and bleachy hot water.

I score the labels, and let the hot soapy water soak through, then I scrape and scrub…

Collecting glass 3

There was a time about 10 years ago, where I found it easy to collect antique pieces, broken and beautiful.  But, that becomes less and less.

I have little heaps in the garden here and there…

Collecting glass 14

I keep a large treasure chest outside, full of bits of broken glass.

Is it junk?

Is it treasure?

To me, it's delightful.

Collecting glass 13

Beached glass is delicious too.  With its worn rounded edges.

Yumm yumm.

Beached glass goes in jars in my house.  Memories.

Every time I look at the green glass, it reminds me of Return to Oz the movie.

Do you live on the beach? (or should I say, near the beach/ocean)

Collecting beach treasures is one of my greatest loves.

Growing up, we lived by the ocean (Southern California) almost half of the year, every year.

We had this one beach house, where you would cross the street, and be on the ocean.  I love that ocean air, and the perpetual collecting.  Shells, glass……

I miss it sometimes.

Collecting glass 8

Some of those big sauce jars are excellent for sipping ice cold drinks out of, on a sweltering hot day…

Collecting glass 5

I so enjoy walking out back, and choosing a few bottles and jars to house some petals…

Collecting glass 2

Flowers collected in the garden are beautiful all clustered together, however…

Collecting glass 10

I find that splitting them up, lets me enjoy them even more…

Collecting glass 11

Glasss bottles are excellent vases.

Just great.

Do you have a stash of bottles and jars that you love to fill with green and petals?

Collecting glass 6

Perfect stem holders…

Collecting glass 7

With a pretty effect, of stained glass…

Collecting glass 9

I can't wait for the next jar or bottle that makes its way home.

The square olive oil bottles are super lovely.

Collecting glass 12

Have you found any ocean treasures lately?  Out here in the desert, you can find some fun bits and bobs, metal, glass.  All sorts of things begging to be made into something.

I love foraging for little pieces of junk.

Going for a stroll, never knowing what you might find.

A rusty old nail, a piece of purple glass.

Oooo, I feel an urge coming on!

I have to skedaddle for now, but I'll be back soon.

A sparkly heart

ps:  I missed seeing all the lovely names on my blogs I heart list, in my right hand side bar, so I brought it back.  It was always there, but you had to click on a link to access it.  Mister Lovee always says, out of sight, out of mind.  Which I totally agree with.  So, my list is back in my right hand side bar.  I am absolutely bursting with delightment, seeing all the names of so many of you.  Now I have to go through this list, and see who is still blogging, and add so many of my new friends.  It feels so so so so gooooood to see you there again.  I knew something was missing ;)  Love, V

    I love all your bottles:)
I am a bit of hoarded with bottles myself 🙂
I finally opened up a little space to sell treasures because I need to recycle some of my bottles and few other things….Because I keep buying!
    ha-ha
    Have a great week Vanessa!

I too love glass. When I was little, there was a hill across the street that had once been a junkyard. Then they plowed dirt into it and it became a hill. Imagine my joy when one day we were digging to bury a time capsule and we heard a clunk. Glass bottles of every shape and size came out of that hill after that. I have boxes of them. I love old glass. (And wish I lived somewhere where I could collect beach glass.) Old glass and rocks. My finest collections 🙂

  3. Kim says:

Yay! I’m glad I’m not the only gal that gets goggly-eyed over glass! I save all sorts of glass bottles to use as vases and to store my pretties in. I still have a huge drawer full of my mom’s old “canning jars” out in the garage.
Isn’t it funny ~ the simple things that find a place in our hearts? 🖤🖤

Ohhhh…p.s. just in case you might want to have a look, I’m having a give-away on my blog for 2 of my newest prints. They’re fun prints from my “fairy tales and nursery rhymes” series. 🖤🖤

  4. Cori G. says:

Oh what lovely bottles to be sure, my Fanciful driendling…huh? I just looked up to see my typo and me thinks I rather like the word “driendling” for a special “friend-ling” (that would be “you” but of course). Driendling almost sounds like something you’d call a “pixie” friend. SO, my beloved Driendling, I can help you with that cobalt bottle…to rid yourself of its contents, I mean. Do you like to make home made pesto pizza?? Simply saute some mushrooms or onions in butter and sherry. Before you know it that bottle will be empty and happy for a good washing ;-))))).
Oh! I told my hubby about your Mister and the flowers buried in ice. My hubby said, “Not on your LIFE!” What a silly man and he knows not what he’s missing out on. OH!!! Do you ever put nasturtiums in your sandwiches or salads???
    Yumm-i-liciousness!!!
    love me

  5. Karla says:

Sea glass is my favorite 🙂

  6. Stephanie says:

yes! I love all your bottles of buds! I too love one or two blooms in small bottles or vases.
    loving late summer!!
    x..x

  7. I love your collection! Great light and art in this post! Hope all is well. I have a love of aqua ball jars. When we moved into this house there were some from Grandma and Grandpa’s canning days. Magic. Take care sunshine!

  8. I love glass too. Your collection makes me happy and sad at the same time. Happy because I know how much you love them and the joy they bring; oh the thrill of a new treasure… sad because I had to stop collecting once I moved back to NYC. I have no space *sigh*. If you see someone lurking around this post every now and then, don’t panic; it’s me 😉
And your collection of bloggy friends looks lovely too.

  9. deb says:

I love to see blog lists. I find so many new wonderful blogs that way. Thanks for showing yours again.
I love bottles too but mostly i can’t help it that it runs thru my mind what i can possibly do to those bottles. I blame it all on the girlscouts when i was little . I can remember a craft where we put masking tape on bottles then stained it. Funny the thinks you remember. But i have a few bottles hanging out waiting for me to do something with them.
Ahh beach glass. I love it. I’ve never had the opportunity to actually find any on a beach but even the store bought stuff is lovely. With our California move looming i have high hopes i will one find some. And if you like i’ll send some to my friend out in the desert……

  10. Vicki O'Dell says:

    V,
I love your bottles. I’ve been saving some for a bottle tree for my garden next year.
BTW if you are in the market for “new” blogs to add to your list I’d love it if you would consider me.

  11. Linda Diane says:

Oh, I do have a weakness for jars and bottles, but most are not as lovely as yours! Periodically I have a talk with myself and get rid of some of them. I like to have them around, though–y’know, for future projects of some sort or another. I have actually used many of them, so I am not totally saving them without reason. : ) I love those jars you have with beach glass, and of course I love seeing those flowers of yours!

  12. Nicki says:

Love your bottle collection! We have quite a few, too. I wish I could live by the ocean – my mother’s family comes from an island in Greece and I really do feel it is in our blood! I’ve always lived smack dab in the middle of the country, though – only a few precious vacations where we traveled to the Gulf (and once to California for a few days!) and I treasure my collections of shells. I have a huge apothacary jar on my mantle right now in fact. I’d love to go back to Pensacola some day. White sand, beautiful blue BLUE water. I miss it dreadfully! And I’d love to go to my Yiayia’s village some day – see the Mediterranean and the olive trees!! *sigh*
It’s been many years since we got to really go on a vacation and money is tighter than ever. But dreaming is free, right? 😉

  13. Pat says:

I’m so glad to know that I’m not the only one that gets excited about jars & bottles! You have some beautiful ones. I so love beach glass too! I am not near a beach…as much as I love it…but I’ve been given some beautiful beach glass by treasured friends.
    xo

  14. I have my hand up here!! woo hoo me too, love to collect bottles. The man at the dump saves them for me. I have 100s of Bombay Saphire bottles because they are square, one day I will use them as bricks and make a blue glass wall. Love the flowers in bottles, such a shiny and flowery post.
and return to oz, all I remember is men with wheel arms and buckets of sandwiches that hung on trees? ohh and refinding her friends who were turned into pretty things in some huge room of treasures.
love it, thanks for the reminder, Im gonna go see if you tube has it!

I love bottles and jars as well. I am drawn to the colors and textures of glass. 🙂 And I just have to share that I love Return to Oz. That just made me smile.

  16. Celia says:

I LOVE bottles…..I pick them up every chance I get!

  17. nikkonia says:

oh i love this post. i love the different colors of all the beautiful glass. reminds me of a favorite childhood vacation spot of mine: glass beach in northern california <3
i'm oh so surprised to see a link to my very old blog "this adventure storie" in your side bar. i deleted that a while back 🙁 and now photo-blog at nikkonia.com, just in case 😉

  18. Kelly says:

I love to collect little bottles or jars like sample jelly type to put even the smaller flowers in. They are useful for houseplant trimmings to start new plants to.
I sure miss visiting the beach ever since I decided to move to Arizona. Now I have gone to reminiscing cool breezes and the sounds and smells of the ocean and chasing seagulls. I loved spending hours combing for sea treasures, even rocks and interesting wood pieces. 😉

  19. Cameron says:

I get giddy about our trips up to Northern California every summer! There are beaches called “Glass Beach” and “Agate Beach” that hold so many delights! I can spend hours scouring the ground until my neck begs for mercy…haha! I took pictures of the colorful sand to show all my bloggy friends in my 2 vacation posts starting here:

    if you’re interested 🙂
Love you collection of bottles…and the flowers you grow to put in them. Your hands are truly special and create magic on everything you do!

  20. Oh yes, I am a crazy fool for colored glass too. Not just bottles but also beautiful bowls that sparkle in my cabinet. I wish I had a treasure chest though. That is so cool. Also cool is your blog list. I love blog list and I will come back to surf from yours because it is such a great way to find new blogs to 🖤.

  21. Oh Vanessa, SWOON, such beautiful colours, I think my next painting will have to be all glass greens. We’ve been on the beach today ( in winter!) collecting beautiful bits to make wonderful things from!

  22. heather says:

What a beautiful and bright collection you have! Very pretty! I agree, its getting harder to find good affordable glass these days. I love that every scrap of it is loved and used!~

  23. Tawny says:

I was just chatting with my mom the other day about our strange glass addiction… it so nice to see so many others with the same hoarding obsession! LOL!
From jars and bottles to bits and pieces of china I 🖤 glass!
    {and I 🖤 you sweet Miss V!}

  24. Laura S. says:

All of your beautiful collections are so nice to see! Thanks for including me in your blog list – I’m still “My Life in Kentucky”, but I’m now living in Arizona!

  25. Gorgeous pictures and collection. I have a few glass bottles that I have treasured for many years. I am always looking for similar pieces but haven’t ran across any yet 🙂

  26. Alia says:

Ooh I love to collect old bottles and stuff too (and put flowers in them)! I also love to go for walks and find cool bits and bobs. On our property growing up there was this little spot where way back in the day someone had piled up their trash. I called it the can dump because it had all these cool old rusty cans and bottles and bits of broken china. I would dig through for the best pieces and bring them home. I guess one person’s trash really is another’s treasure!

  27. Laura says:

These are so bright and fun….your flowers are really pretty. Mine are all dead dead dead.
Hey—gourds DO have a weird funky scent that sticks to your hands. It will cling to clothing, too. Then you have that gourdy stink on you all day.

  28. cheryl says:

    Hello girlie…
You know… you could get a rock polisher and fill it with that broken glass and end up with all kinds of wonderful colored “beach” glass. Its easy-peasy 🙂

  29. Yay! I love looking at your blog list too…so many wondrous blogs to peruse…it’s like a never ending treasure hunt!
I love collecting the cobalt blue glass and the light green glass. I put flowers in the blue bottles which, when I originally bought them had drinking water in them similar to Perrier water with screw top lids. Those bottles were a rare find. When I was in Massachusetts with my sister two years ago, we went to Marlborough, to a private beach and picked up sea glass in all different colors.
Now you can buy sea glass at Michael’s in mesh bags! But that takes the fun out of finding it on the beach. I guess Martha Stewart started that ‘craze’ several years ago.
    Ta! Ta!
I liked what you were creating in the way of dolls *-*

  30. natalea says:

I’m right with you on the collecting glass thing! and ahhh…beach glass is a delight!
    xo natalea

  31. JessiVille says:

A beautiful post! Your truck of broken bits of glass? – a treasure! My mother has collected lots of intersting glass for her garden too. Maybe it’s time for me to follow suit.

  32. It seems that I have now spent way too much time in England as my only thoughts (when I saw your chess full of glass) were for health and safety! My God! They are soooooooooooooooo obsessed with health and safety here that sometimes it seems like a real joke and yet, all I thought was ” oh my! someone might get cut!” … 4 years ago, my French Bohemian mind would have sighed with delightment and poetic thoughts. Or…Am I getting old???? HELP!!!
    (GIGGLES)
I love how the bottles are used as vases. It is charming and romantic .
V…you have a wonderful blog list! Where’s my name? ( LOL!!!!) . Sorry, I feel super cheeky today. :-p
I saw on the previous post that a wonderful doll is coming to the world. Am looking forward to seeing this new little beauty.
Lots of love to you and your furry family accross the oceans .

  33. I love to collect bottles, too! I like to use the labels from your shop to decorate them… I keep the poison ones out all the time as decor and a warning to those little devils with thieving tendencies.
I wish I had been older to enjoy the beach when we would live out there… I have a vague memory of walking to the beach and the windows on our house… they were like the round ones on a ship… at least, that’s what I remember…

  34. Leslie says:

Bottles, bottles, bottles, beautiful bottles….they are always so timeless. A girl can never have to many of them…..

  35. Marilyn says:

Love, love beach glass and old bottles. I usually put them on my mantle in the summer, but forgot to do that this summer. Is it too late? I have so much wanted to go searching for beach glass too. Love seeing your gorgeous flowers in the bottles.

  36. I wish I had been older to enjoy the beach when we would live out there… I have a vague memory of walking to the beach and the windows on our house… they were like the round ones on a ship… at least, that’s what I remember…

  37. Suzanne says:

    Hi Vanessa!
Just checking in to see what fanciful things you have been up to because I haven’t visited all summer long…bad me.
Love your bottles and your creative touch with all of them. We find “treasures” buried in our back yard often and I have kept all the old bottles on a tarnished silver tray in my little boy’s bathroom. They are “his.”
Your blog looks great. Is it me, or did you change the background recently? Beautiful as always.
    Ciao bella,
    Suzanne

  38. Theresa says:

What a lovely glass collection, Vanessa! I, too, adore beach combing for all types of treasures…shells, glass, seaweed and other goodies. One time (in Maine, I think) we found sea urchins. So pretty! I actually like looking at all the glass items you find in thrift shops and garage sales…what a great way to find old treasures!
How wonderful that you have included your blog list again! I shall enjoy going through the links and meeting new friends. 🙂
PS I like using mason jars for drinking, too!
