Autumn Magic

It's autumn, can you believe it?

I wanted to pop in yesterday but I was in pruning madness.

There are fresh roses springing up, as they do at this time of the year.

And so my mind dances between summer and fall.

Autumn equinox 2

I've been painting little pumpkins.

Just a couple coats of standard acrylic craft paint does the trick.

I'm so pleased with their bright cheeriness.

Autumn equinox 1

The little turquoise ones really hit the spot too.

Just remember that if you put a teal pumpkin outside your house for Halloween it means that you are giving out food free items to trick or treaters (such as little toys) for kids with food allergies.

So, teal is the food allergy pumpkin color, isn't that cute?

You can google the details on that if you want to know more.

I never get any trick or treaters way out here, so my little blue babies will just be for fun.

Autumn equinox 3

I'm feeling very colorful lately.

Pops of happy candy colors and such.

Autumn equinox 6

It was such a glorious hiking day today, the clouds were unreal.

The air, the ambience, the entire weather experience was sublime.

I post regular pics on Instagram if you fancy a peek.

So, it was grey with dappled sun here and there and soft rain.

Soooo perfect for the autumn mood.

Lighting a few candles and starting to decorate a little.

My new rose bushes (not that I needed any more, but you know) are doing incredibly well.

Gifting gobs of roses over and over.

Can't go wrong with a Gene Boerner rose bush I say.

Autumn equinox 4

Stacks of happy colors, yay!

Autumn equinox 8

I'm just beginning to decorate my dining table.

I lost a day this week with rodent drama in my holiday decor shed.

It was sealed shut but it's par for the course in the country.

I ended up throwing away a lot and then somehow was inspired for something fresh and new.

It was actually liberating to be forced to get rid of most of my old holiday decor.

The good stuff was safe in bins or secure in the tiny cottage so no worries.

Anywho, here I am painting pumpkins now, so fun.

Autumn equinox 9

I'm not sure exactly where I'm going with my decor.

Autumn equinox 7

But fresh roses and pink and orange stripes are stealing my heart.

Autumn equinox 10

Grey day (we love those in the land of sun) & happy mantle…

Such a neat way to plunge into a new season.

Autumn equinox 5

I think autumn is beloved by most isn't it?

It sure is nice to get a break from the heat.

I love October, it's not too far away is it?

I just don't like how fast the next 3 months go.

Need to savor each day.

I just pruned 8 wheel barrows of a climbing rose that is eating my little gallery building in the garden.

Currently used as an office but soon to be mine again.

I need to rebuild my dear scarecrow, maybe as soon as I finish typing actually.

I'm supposed to be at some fancy event tonight but somehow movies and pajamas want to win me over.

Okay, they more than likely will.

I've been going to bed very early and waking up very early.

When I was a kid I'd fall asleep in restaurants all the time.

I could not stay up.

My parents would pull two chairs together to make me a little bed or find a cozy booth for me.

I remember going in and out of sleep to the sounds of a restaurant.

Clanking forks and plates, chatter of people, scents of cooking.

Still a fond sound.

I love closing my eyes at breakfast joints and hearing the sounds.

Such good smells in a morning cafe too.

The good news is, now that the days are cooler I can enjoy a morning breakfast away instead of tending garden madly.

Watering and protecting all the growing things.

It's time for a break, yessssss!

I loooove my garden but boy the summer is long here.

There I go veering again, the one thing I'm great at.

Soooo, off I got for now.

Happy autumn!!!!

Love, Vanessa

See you soon a fanciful twist 300px

Ps:  Since it's Jon Secada Friday…

(My sister and I invented this as our time of playing blast to the past tunes for each other. We used to do this over the phone on Friday nights when she lived in New Mexico and we still do sometimes. Music obsessives, for sure.)

Anywho, I was going to leave you with Elegia (when it came on in Stranger Things I immediately thought about Blane, Andie and Ducky, talk about blast to the past) but then I thought, maybe too moody for candy colored pumpkins.  If you've seen Stranger Things on Netflix, the soundtrack is fab isn't it?

All that to say…

Since we have pink pumpkins I'll leave you with the Psychedelic Furs <3

Candy colored pumpkins! Adorable! I’m ashamed to admit this, but the rose I bought last spring is still in a bucket of water. It got so hot so fast that I couldn’t get the spot dug for it. Hoping to get it in the ground this weekend. (fingers crossed)
    I love Psychedelic Furs!

I found this post quite beautiful and inspiring. I am not or never have been fond of the color orange and black used in Halloween. It’s just too creepy and ugly for my taste. I decorate with whites with pops of colors here and there. I love your use of color and you have that gorgeous eye for combinations. What a gift! Thanks for sharing that with us Vanessa.

  8. Kelly says:

    Wow Veevala – Gorgeous!!
And loookit how many of us like PIP and Psychedelic Furs! We should have a virtual Autumn Dance party where we all pick our dresses/outfits, décor and playlists. 🙂 🙂
Those pumpkins look good enough to eat, haha! Only I think the inside of those pretty pastels would be like a light ooey gooey pumpkin cotton candy whip or something— yum yum!
We had a little rain yesterday too and this morning was dreamy! Like, no evil mosquitoes dreamy! I didn’t begin decorating this weekend as I was called in to work but I am planning on beginning within the next few days…I’ve been leaning towards purple and orange and black and white but now I am swooning over your color scheme. Woo!

  12. Danzel says:

I love this idea. I can’t wait to paint some mini pumpkins now.

  13. Renee says:

I love autumn. I put out some of my autumn decorations the other day. Waiting a bit longer on the Halloween decorations. I find myself longing for the coolness of fall because we have had such a miserable, hot, dry summer. I asked someone the other day if they thought summer was going to last all year this year. We did get a bit of rain today.
I’ve been busy making pumpkin bread 🙂 (from your recipe). We also have cushaw and a red winter squash that looks like a red pumpkin. I have been cooking those and pureeing and freezing the pulp to use for breads, pies, etc. I love the spices for fall baking.
    I love the pastel pumpkins.

  14. Misha/Dawaioser (Cosmic Girl) says:

I am so fond of the posts you have with roses and pretty colored things, such as the pumpkins and the china. Super feminine and fun. My Don Juan rose bush is finally growing up and over the top of my arbor, but it’s still in it’s beginning stages where it looks thin and wispy, rather than lush and full and blooming with an abundance of roses. I’m awful with plants, so I hope this will continue living when my green-thumb roommate moves out.
Let’s see. Roses: check. Pretty in Pink & Duckie Dale: awesome. Check. Psychedelic Furs: TRIPLE CHECK. It’s like the post was meant to happen, so I can start off my morning in the right way. <3
I haven't pulled out any of my Halloween stuff yet, but I bought a few new items. You know I can't resist. It's my favorite time of the year. 🙂 Costumes and prepping my porch will soon demand all of my attention and pull out my MUSE, who has been in hiding with the summer heat. Well, that and a wee-bit of depression, (with the exception of work of course,) has had me locked in my house for over a month. Once I begin setting up the Halloween decorations and baking goodies, I am sure all will be well again.

    Vanessa,
I awoke, made a cup of coffee, then fired up my computer and said to myself, “What is fanciful twist up to this morning?” I always log on to find the immediate rose in my day. Thank You for sharing your charming world with us all. I never get on instagram but when you described the kind of glorious day Az was having (I used to live in Mesa & Scottsdale) I knew I would have to check out your activity on that too! Hugz!

  16. Pink, lavender, black & white autumn blessings to You sweet Vanessa.God bless You abundantly

  17. hawthorn says:

Wow, what ever happened to Molly Ringwauld? That was definitely a blast from the past. We don’t seem to get the small pumpkins here in the uk, although might do in the larger cities, here in rural north of England – you can only buy thunking great big ‘uns!

  18. Laura says:

I haven’t watched Stranger Things yet but it keeps coming up in my suggestions. It must be a sign.
Molly Ringwald is still getting around. Now she is doing tv in the mother and aunt roles.

  19. Jen says:

Love The Psychedelic Furs! Funny thing, I used to fall asleep in restaurants too. I would lay across my mom’s lap and remember the hum of voices and clanking of dishes. Lovely li’l pumpkins! It’s cooler here, but of course, no rain. And then, we get those Santa Ana winds that bring hot weather. See you on IG dearie. xoxoxo Jen

  20. Andrew McCarthy! Too cute! Such a dreamboat he was. He was in all of those mushy, gushy, movies which broke so many girls hearts! Dang! I need to find ‘Pretty in Pink’…I could watch ‘Sixteen Candles’ over and over again too. Molly Ringwald and the Brat Pack, Anthony Michael Hall, Mia Sarah, Alan Rusk in ‘Ferris Buller’s Day Off’ he was another darling, charming man/boy, etc. Those were the days…
    Thanks for the memories!
And I adore what you are doing with your pumpkins and I love the info about leaving a teal colored pumpkin out for different treats than candy.
The lime in the coconut….time of year. I like the colors of lime and pink together too!
