As you all know, old fashioned fairy tales aren't all cherries and scones. They are actually equipped with a hearty dose of witches, magic, things going upside down and inside out, tears, woes, toads, evil mother in laws (oops, I mean step mothers), sleeping under a 100 year spell, waiting for Prince Charming, poison apples and all sorts of things that add depth and drama to a tale.
Actually, now that I think about it, if any of us has ever wished for our lives to be fairy tale-like, why, perhaps the wish has in fact come true. That is, if one looks at what a real fairy tale is all about 😉
If everything was always perfect, life would be utterly boring and meaningless. Don't you think? Plus, perfection is relative. But, that's a whole other topic. For today, I think we should simply share our fairytale lives. Give them depth and dimension…
So, with that, let me start the tale telling, then you go next ~
Once upon a time, in a far away desert, lived this girl who skipped around happily. She talked to birds and furry creatures and even deer. Sort of like Snow White, only, well, the animals ran from her and didn't talk back. But that was okay, because she pretended they did, and she was easy at convincing herself about hearing voices. So, all was well….
Anyhow, one day this girl had a beautiful visitor, who accompanied her in a giggly walk in the garden by night, while they marveled at the enormous ring around the moon…
The girl was delighted to have a friend visiting her, but didn't notice that two furry creatures were running around madly behind her.
The largest and strongest (and she is very big and strong) of the furry creatures ran full speed (not on purpose, and nothing happened to the creature) into the backside of the girl, with a great blow. In a split second, the girl flew up into the air and then harshly landed on her back on the ground so hard, her front teeth slammed together, her head went numb and then dizzy, her derriere had no feeling and she was stunned, wondering what had happened…
Granted, she had a little more padding here and there than the girl in the drawing above, which probably was her life savior against broken bones. Yes yes, of this we are certain!
So, the lesson is to make sure you have some pie today, if not sooner! Pad your bottom with desserts, in case this very thing happens to you 😉
The girl was given ice packs right away for her wrist. She felt fine for a couple hours after the toss up (until reality + pain set in), however, the girl was most concerned because her front tooth felt a little loose and sore…
Her beau told her not to touch it or wiggle it, and all would be better in the morning, and thank heavens, it was!!
Anyhow, here is where the story turns to wonderful. She got to be babied by her beau, and good thing she loves to wear black, because she is more than a little black and blue, and the second day lent really sore ribs too (ouchie). But, a magician gave her a magic spell pill in the form of 800 mg of Ibuprofen, and she lived happily ever after…
Oh and, it doesn't hurt that she has an amazing fairy-blogfriend that sent her sooo much delicious yarn (thank you Miss Lovely LORI, I am beyond over the mooooon!!) –
That any pain went right out the window, as she was mesmerized and able to spend the entire night making treats, right in the comfort of her own bed. Perfect timing too because her yarn stash was getting low.
So, it seems life sometimes finds a way to slow you down, no matter what. Mister delivered parcels to the post office for me in the rain and cold, and I have been bringing more faces to life whilst getting back to 100%. Which I am very close to.
So, that's the 411 in my neck of the fairy tale forest. What about yours???
🖤,V
ps: I saw Bright Star, it was good, but oh so so so sad. I also saw Grizzly Man, sad too but I could not get over the fox love. Such precious foxes!! I can't wait to watch Hachi, The Young Victoria (so many of my favorite British actors in one film) and Extraordinary Measures. I have been meaning to go watch The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, but have yet to do so. Have you seen any good movies lately?

Oh no! I hope you are feeling better. I saw bright star too and it was sad, but very good. It was just so pretty to watch! Have you ever seen “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”? It has the same guy from Bright Star. It is very strange and sometimes disturbing (he is good at being creepy), but if you are not easily disturbed or offended then it is so worth a watch! The cinematography is beautiful, and the story is fascinating.
Hope you’re better fairytale girl. Is that you in the photo? So pretty! Oh and absolutely love the Mad tea party cards. I’ll have to buy some. I forgot to tell you, that I bought some of your postcards a while ago, they were so lovely and my daughter loved them too. I had to stop her from pinching them!
Oh, i am glad her wrist & teefy is better, and sounds like furry babies are good to go, although it would have been cool if she crocheted herself a wang dang doodle of an ace bandage, and sported a gold dubloon for a tooth, and rode off into the sunset on Mr. Atticus Saffron Dabloon. Hmmm. Well, maybe it *is* better this way, because i cant wait to see new dolls and the wall of blanket and also the Cute Little White Blanket with fanciful addons. 🙂 (yes that’s the extent of my crochet talk)
Oh, I’m terrible at watching whole movies, i think because i am expected to sit still at work so i like to wander freely about the cabin when i am not there :p BUT on sunday PBS was on a roll and had an excellent documentary on rethinking happiness, and THEN an incredibly breathtaking and fascinating documentary about the bald eagle, oh it was sad and happy and sweet and bittersweet and heartwarming; and then i watched Emma on Masterpiece theatre.

The end. YAY !!! XOXOXOXOXVIIXOXOX
You poor poor thing! Glad it went realatively okay though.
I only have tales of snow. Snow, snow and more snow. It’s waist high here now and -22F where my mum lives, an hour away. Documented: http://blog.afiori.com
Cars are driving off the road here and there, traffic standing still but today I finally see a bit of sunshine so I think I’ll brave the cold and the deep deep snow and venture outside for a bit.
P.S. I love the illustrations!
a perfect little fairytale, since it ended fairly well. so happy that the girl has people who take care of her and that she’s doing better ;).
all i have is a tale about a girl who was very busy taking care of her children, trying to make sure that the cold they came home from school with was chased. she was so busy that she forgot to take the medicine and rest herself. the children went happily and well back to school while she stayed in bed, drinking all kinds of remedies and feeling somewhat miserable. until she realized that this was the perfect excuse to bring all her collected, pretty papers, sissors, glue, paint, ribbons and so forth to her bed and just do what ever she felt like doing. which was exactly what she did. and when she started to feel a bit blue again (since she couldn’t stop sneezing all over the papers) she brought her laptop instead and for a long time she just stared amazed at vanessa’s beautiful photos, illustrations, cards and such. read all the tales and thoughtful words. “life is so very pretty after all” she said out loud, took some more medicine and went to sleep.
the end.
Goodness sweet Van…
Sounds like you had a rough landing in fairtale land… but so glad to hear that you are doing ok…
Get better… cant wait to see all your goodies… that yarn stash looks amazing…
Glad the little “creature” is ok too… wouldnt want to have two of you laying in bed all achy and hurt…
We are bracing for a winter storm …. oh my!!
LOTS OF HUGS
Hello Vanessa… I knew your fairytale would end “and they all lived happily ever after”… ’cause that’s how fairytales do… your furry babies just wanted to be near you… once upon a time, I was bit in the face by a fish… actually, it was a Dalmation named Fish… I had to be treated and have all sorts of shots and things, but I knew as long as Fish was ok and no one would hurt him, I would be ok… and I am and so is Fish… xoxo Julie Marie
Oh Dearies me! I’m ever so glad your okay (if bruised and sore) Do rest and enjoy tea and cakes and costumes films and the attentions of your kind Lovee! I hope you mend soon and enjoy a little much needed rest!!
(I took a spill flat on my back once…onto terrazzo floor…and I still have back pain from it….nearly 6 years ago!! eeeep!)
Take care Miss fanciful, and feel better soon! 🙂
Classic fairytale stuff – the heroine in peril, a little help from the handsome prince, and a happy ending! Glad you were not seriously injured…I had something similar happen last year when two very large Aussie creatures tangled their leashes around my legs on icy pavement as I exited the car (I was picking them up from doggie daycare after visiting their Daddy in the hospital). And down I went. Thank heaven for padding indeed, hehe!
Yummy yarn!!
~ Carolee
Oh my beloved Magical Muse!!! Thrown to the ground harshly! Oh me oh my. Fur babies do tend to get intoxicated by crisp evening air. Excellent advice from The Mister about the tooth – exactly the right thing to do. I so love the new drawings inspired by your Unfortunate Event though. Knit yourself well. **blows kisses** Deb
So glad you are on the mend. I’ve had many a mis-hap with furry ones – It’s amazing the damage they can unintentionally do – Yikes!
Hmmm – feeling the need to dig into some yarn….
I have 5 little shih-tzu dogs that are the love of my life. Sooner of later one will run in front of me and I will take a tumble. I wish I could bounce like a young person…alas I am an old person and will probably shatter into a thousand pieces.
So glad you are feeling better….take care of yourself little girl…I like checking in and reading your blog.
Oh my goodness!!! So glad you are alright. That’s the most important thing. My dogs have barreled (I kid you not) into me at full-speed and have nearly knocked me to the ground. The best is when they drag ME on the leash! LOL I feel like my arm might pop out of its socket. At least you got to be pampered and cared for AND play with yummy yarn.
I am so happy you saw Bright Star (it was one of my favorite films last year!!!). I saw want to see The Young Victoria (but it is playing at a rather non-convenient location). We want to go see The Lovely Bones~maybe this weekend, we will!
Hope you are fully recuperated (I messaged you with a particular inquiry…please reply as you have time).
Stay well!!! Theresa
I don’t like sad movies! Recently i’ve seen Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and A Haunting in Connecticut. Hehe. Very interesting…..
I’m so glad you’re feeling better! 🙂 I am dying to see The Young Victoria! I haven’t been to see many movies lately, but I did see Coco Before Chanel, which was quite interesting.
Lovely illustrations 🙂
Golly. I actually just saw The Invention of Lying…which I thought was a super special sweet little surprise…
Every morning at 10 o’clock a fairy comes flying across the room. It swirls and twirls and dives through the air while calling to all fairy tale characters who will hear – that it is nearing the time to dine in the dream houses great hall for a tea party at noon.
Now depending on which way the winds do go and weather it is raining, sleet, sun or snow, the ears who hear lift up with twinkling delight while preparing their costumes so bright start getting ready to go.
Good to hear you’re feeling better and being properly spoiled by your handsome beau. And lovely treats in the mail – guaranteed to ease the pain. xoxox
I’m so glad you’re on the mend and enjoying your yarn!
WOW! Im feeling your pain! being a fur baby mother myself I have had the exact same thing happen, i felt like i had been run over by a horse! not a happy gleeful slobering kissy fur creature, she looked at me as if to say ” hey! what are you doing on the ground!”
Im glad you got to create as you rested, a bit scarey having a wiggly tooth though, very witchy poo like!
I loved the story…..
my fairy tale yesterday would go a something like this…
There once was a fairy mother who lived in a land soooo hot that the grass was turned brown and the earth returned to sand, she stayed hiding in her cave all day because the sun would burn her delicate wings to a dry crisp, the wind whipped all day and made everyone feel hot and crazy, they went on a quick journey to the magic grocery shop to collect supplies and when they returned father fairy drove over the broom on the lawn and then into the paddling pool because he looking the other way! gggrrrr said mother fairy as the wind screamed and swirled making things feel far worse than they were!….just things they decided and had a laugh. Nana fairy came to play and look at mother fairys new art pieces and because the sun wasent so hot in the afternoon they played with their little ducks out in the quickly repaired pool.xxx
Its strange reading everyones winter posts when I have forgotten what cold can feel like.
hope your mending well, I look forward to your new creations with much anticipation!
sheree xxx
Hope you have bounced back nicely since your trip! Good thing you are a little nymph or you would have been hurt much worse 😉
Dang! You take care of yourself girl! Sounds like Mister Lovee took good care of you. Dogs can be ‘dingy’ glad it wasn’t worse than it was.
I am happy your friend Lori sent you some scrumptious looking yarn, perfect timing!
Gosh! the doll face you’re creating looks fabulous, glorious, beautiful…are there lots of them? Hope so…Well, I did watch ‘Hogfather’ which Sarah Faber recommended. I had to hunt long and hard for it and found the only two copies left at a Block Buster.
XOXO and get well wishes
Oh, can I relate to this story! Two nights ago I went walking the dog in the dark during a light snowfall and didn’t some ice under the snow. Fell flat on my back, my head hit the sidewalk with a crack and I lay there stunned for a moment. Didn’t feel any major pain, bu the next day my neck and lower back became progressively more painful and stiff. I hadn’t taken a spill like that in years! Ibuprofen to the rescue! While in bed I watched Julie and Julia and grew hungrier by the minute. Fun movie.
Vanessa,
so sorry to hear about what happened to you!
I am sending you magical wishes for healing and love….and a sprinkle of faery dust to bind it all together….woosh….it should be upon you very soon!
Much Love,
Dena
Oh Vanessa~~~Ouch, I am taking 800 mg Motrin too~~~
No jumping down the rabbit hole please~~You might get hurt worse.
xoxo
Kay Ellen
Owwwie! I am glad you didn’t break anything and you are feeling better. Mister Lovee took good care of you.
The pictures were wonderful!!
Iam off to your shop now 🙂
xoxo, L
Oh my goodness! I could practically LIVE on this blog.
Oh my, how ironic! I say this, because I, too suffered a bit of black & blueness recently! Although, mine wasn’t because of silly furry creatures, but instead, my own doing. There I was, happily skipping (quite literally) down the hallway in my home and I tripped on my pajama bottoms (that are just wayy too long) and hit my back smack into the corner of the wall, which is metal. Oh did I ever have a big bruise.
But yes, morning came and I think there are magical fairies that are there just for mending 🙂
xoxoxo Glad you feel better!
I love love love your illustrations almost, if not more, than your tale! What a cute story (sorry it resulted in pain). If Grizzly Man looked anything like Grizzly Adams (who I willing admit I had a HUGE crush on when I was a kid) I’d go see the movie LOL I have two hundred pounds of dogs so I can commiserate, but we wouldn’t have it any other way, would we!
sending (((healing vibes))) your way.
xx
I’m glad this fairytale had a happy ending and not like Hans Christian Anderson fairytales. ;o) DO go and see the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. I loved it! Visually, it’s stunning. I want to see it again for that reason alone. As a story it’s a fairytale. I really enjoyed it! I think you will too. It’s your “cup of tea” so they so, and it made me oh so anxious for Alice in Wonderland. I can’t wait!!! – Kathy (in Chicago where the sun is ACTUALLY SHINING! Glorybe!
Oh dear, you fell on your rear! This is such a sad tale and funny as well, but I’m sure it wasn’t as funny at the time. Are you feeling better Beloved Fanciful friendling? I certainly do hope so for the thought of you in pain causes my heart to break…yes, break!
Oh, I was just talking to Darling Deb and she said Milo will be on his way to his next adventure…I’ll send TONS of Happy Thoughts your way to hopefully brighten your day. it’s sad putting that sweet little creature into his SMTU (snail mail transporter unit) and sending him off to who knows who…tee hee!
Love from me to you Miss V.
xoxo cori
PS. Bright Star was beautiful, but even more so was The Young Victorian. I’ve seen it twice! The costumes are a visual feast for the eyes!!!!
What on earth has Baby gone and done? Although you know she didn’t mean too 😉 I sure hope you are feeling better asap V. It is nice to be babies by the Mr. though isn’t it, tee hee? And your illustration is funny…I can see it now 😉
Jamie 🙂
Hi Vanessa,
Hope you are feeling better soon. I was just browsing your posts, trying to catch up. I was away and got busy and stopped visiting my favorite places for a bit. But I am back and peeking into your inspiration. Hope you are being nursed back to being good as new.
I am glad that nothing is broken. I broke my ankle twice falling and it was so annoying.
Feel better.
Karen
I have eaten enough pie and chocolate that if I fall in a certain area, i have enough cushion that I will be fine! I do hope you’ll feel better.
I do want to see Bright Star. On my list to rent. The last good thing I saw was actually on tv: Cranford.
See?! That is the essence of all things fairytale! None of the princesses or maidens that I can think of ever had it completely perfect, easy, or even fair, yet, they manage to see this fair world of imagination for what it is.It is our story. We create how we see and how we react and as a result, we receive our treasures because we saw it all with light in our eyes and rose colored glasses. I am so glad you were not hurt worse dear gal. So glad. Take care and delightful post, such fun really. “Life truly is the grandest fairytale…” Blessings and light.
Once upon a time there was an artistic fairy who loved to work in her studio. It was full of color and light and shiny objects. She would play and play and stay all day. One day, as she was playing, she turned around quickly to grab some bling when all of a sudden she slipped and fell. She fell so fast that she didn’t notice that she was falling into her soft pink box. Inside the box was bags of cotton balls. When she landed on those bags; the cotton balls went shooting into the air and filled the studio with the most glorious of sights. Thousands of cotton balls strewn throughout the studio. Now how fun is that she thought. Then began checking herself for any injuries. None could be found! She was saved by all those cotton balls and the soft pink box!! What a wonderful day she thought as she brushed herself off. She whistled a happy tune as she gathered her white fluffy cotton balls and put them back into the sack. The moral of the story is: Always land on something soft! LOL!!
Keep on dancing in your color and light. Glad you are healing now.
Gentle hugs
SueAnn
OWIE! I swear animals don’t realize how far from the ground we humans are and what a tumble we take. Glad you weren’t hurt badly.
I saw “Bright Star” in the theatres and cried so hard. Luckily I was by myself and could care less about blubbering away. (LOL) I’ve been wanting to see “Young Victoria” but life has been getting in the way. Instead I went to an incredible art exhibition by Jaume Plensa. Go check out his sculpture, gorgeous stuff:

Is it OK if I’m grinning as I read your fairy tale? Because I’ve had the very thing happen to me, by even bigger furry creatures. Again and again. One of these days, I’m going to get hurt! For now, I just wince, take a tentative step, and carry on. My beau is not nearly so attentive. Oh, he would NOTICE if I didn’t make it back to the kitchen for several hours. He is ever so considerate that way.
