The Thirteenth.

Friday the 13th.

13, one of my favorite numbers, next to 7.

The thirteenth 12

(For some odd reason, I don't adore even numbers.)

As I thought about the date today, and how I don't find it spooky or scary, an idea came to me.

I decided to go into the living room (actually a music + family room combo, as the actual music room is bursting at the seams) and gather 13 random things that sit upon our table tops.

13 things that go unnoticed because we are so used to them being there.

The thirteenth 1

I have no clue what these items say about us.

For starters, neither one of us is from Oklahoma, tee hee.

13 tchotchkes (not including the two stacks of books that happen to have 13 in each stack).

If you walked around your house and picked up 13 random items that are always hanging around, what would they be?  What would they say about you?

The thirteenth 2

As I was putting the items back on their table tops and shelves, I realized that I have never shared something with you….

I have never shared some of Mister's treasures that live amongst us.

I am surrounded by things like, little 3 ft. warriors….

The thirteenth 3

And, even though my city house and my part of the country house are different from Mister's style, I still love his treasures, and his love of global findings and color.  He adores vibrant colors.

I think since I love my beau so much, I love his stuff, and I love being a part of it.  So, I cozy up with it, and admire it.

I even talk to "them" while I am dusting.  I say things like, Sorry sir (oops I mean Ma'am), I'm just going to dust you real quick so you'll feel all lovely…

The thirteenth 4

In the last 10 years I have added a few things to the decor in the living room, but have never changed the style that Mister created.

Plus, I have my own little spaces to play in, and he his.  Maybe that's why we get along so well?  We can escape each other 😉

I dunno.

Anyhow, I am surrounded by his collections of faces and creatures.

The thirteenth 5

I trip over more guitars than one can play.  I bump into amps and get tangled up in cords.  And, I quite enjoy every minute of it.

The thirteenth 6

Oh and, we finally moved a huge horned creature so he doesn't hover over my head when I sit on the couch.  Now he watches us eat dinner 🙂

The thirteenth 9

There are shelves, and shelves, and shelves of music books and music pages everywhere…

The thirteenth 8

And wouldn't ya know, there are exactly 13 guitar books stacked on a shelf, that Mister pointed out today.

The thirteenth 7

As I was taking my photos, Mister asked what I was doing, and I said, I am on a 13 thing kick.

He asked why?

I said, it's Friday the thirteenth.

He replied, Friday August 13th?

Yes, I said.

His eyes got wide and melancholic.

Then he said, "It's my Mom's Birthday.  She was actually born on Friday August 13th."

You see, Mister Lovee's Mom has not been alive for many many years.  I never met her.

I am sure she was lovely, and I am ever so thankful to her for having had this beautiful baby boy…

The thirteenth 11

That grew into a beyond adorable little rascal…

 The thirteenth 9

A little rascal that I adore…

The thirteenth 10a

Who turned into a musician, businessman, earth lover boy, traveler and all around, easy going lad (who can be ornery).  A lad who bought a bus (back in the day), grew his hair into super long curls, and lived in his bus - traveling the USA when he was young.  (so many tales he has)

A lad who is one heck of a Mister Lovee

Mad Hatter Enchantment 17

And, an all around delightfully fun Mad Hatter.

Mad 10

I am certain his Mom is in a beautiful place, on the other side of the rainbow.  I hope she is eating several scrumptious cupcakes while seated on a cloud, on her special day.

So you see, I didn't even plan to be here this Friday the 13th.

And yet, I peeked in, and told a curiously random tale, of sorts 😉

So, I'll be quiet now and go do the dishes…

🖤,V

Today's 3 random things.

1)  I found this wee gal sitting on my desk this morning.  Mister sometimes sneaks little treasures into my spaces, and places them where I will unexpectedly find them.  This little gal tickled me beyond happy.  Mister can be such a fairy godfather – when he isn't being a troll.  Just kidding Loveeeeee 😉

The thirteenth 11

2)  Why is Friday the 13th supposed to be spooky?  Do you suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia?

3)  I like spooky movies, but not disturbing ones.  I like haunted houses and dark fairy tales.  But only during daylight hours. Preferably when its raining, and while I'm crocheting.

3a)  Why oh why do I have this song in my head?  Quick quick, give me a different one that just now popped into your head… come on… 😉
  1. vicki cook says:

    Hellooooo vanessa!
Lovely story, and GOSH… so many scrumptuous photos! I love dropping by whenever I have a minute and always leave smiling. THANK YOU for that. (actually I arrive smiling, too) Your posts have so much childlike magic in them. You are a breath of fresh air, dear one!
As always, i appreciate all of the time and effort you put into all that you do… it shows!
    – vicki xo

  2. Michelle says:

You always manage to take the worries off my mind. So thank you and here’s a little ditty that I love and happens to be in my head at the moment.

    <3 Michelle

  3. ooo ooo ooo I have to comment on the creepy statue that reminds me of a movie I watched as a child with my mother. I couldn’t have been more than 7 or so and we both screamed through the whole thing together. It was called Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black. DON’T WATCH IT! If you want to keep Mr. Lovee’s things still around and not end up in a rubber room if you know what I mean. There have been remakes but I still think Karen Blacks version is best.
Now if you’re like me… and have been fair warned… you’d have to watch it anyway just to see for yourself! but! curiosity did kill the cat you know… Let me know if you watch it 😉

  4. oh and I believe things happen a lot of the time for a reason. Maybe it wasn’t coincidence that you were meant to draw attention to your lovee’s mother’s birthday… love is all around us whether we see it or not.
    xxoo

  5. Krista Komis says:

I love Friday the 13th too. A lot of people are a little freaked out by it, but I always thought it was cool. Your ’13 things’ idea sounds fun! I would do a post about it, but I don’t think I’d remember where everything went. (I am such a pack rat, it’s ridiculous)
So, a few random things that go unnoticed in my life include…
    1. A metal parrot hanging from my ceiling
    2. An old cabinet card taped to my vanity
    3. A hairpin I’ll never wear, but is so pretty to look at
    4. Keychains tied to a chair
and a whole bunch of other things that I love but usually don’t even notice. 🙂
A new song I love (that will get stuck in your head, I promise), “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri.
    xoxo

  6. So funny,
    triskaidekaphobia
    One of my favorite words.
My son Justin and I are always randomly saying it when we get on our wierd word trips.
I love all the little knick knacks you found.
It is funny now that you mention it to think what 13 things I could lay out and what would they say about me.
Goodness gracious, I better not let them out if they are going to say things about me. Those little things may say too much, Tell my secrets. I better have a chat with them before I let them out. Lol
Have a wonderful 13th, and I think it is wonderful that you have a Wonderfully Mad Hatter that you love so much to be with you through this life.
    Hugs,
    Wendy from Wonderland

  7. Alia says:

7 and 13 are my favorite numbers too! Well actually 7 is my favorite number and 13 is my lucky number. Also, I am right there with you on the whole spooky things situation, I pretty much agree with exactly how you described it. I love friday the 13th, today is my Mister’s birthday!

  8. eleni says:

hi! this odd word you wrote its half greek! tris mean three and deka means ten. so 3 + 10 = 13!!!!!

  9. Janel says:

Well, from time to time I wake up with Christmas Caroles running thru my head. Weird, I know.
So today it was/is “Let it Snow”
Since it’s expected to be >100F today in Tuson, how appropriate for you.
    Have a great w/e!

  10. shibori girl says:

    Dearest Vee,
How nice that you found a man with eclectic design tastes to match your own. Thanks for sharing that lovely story with us about the meaning of August’s Friday the 13th.
    Happy August 14th!
    xoxo,
    Kate

  11. I think, in that moment when you confirmed the date to your Mister Lovee, Vanessa, she was alive for those brief moments in his eyes, heart and mind. I think it’s a good idea to have your own spaces with your own things in them. As much as people love each other {and I have loved my hubby for over 25 years now}, I do need to have my own space to get away to every so often. He just takes a nap ~ he doesn’t need a special room, anywhere there’s a couch or comfy chair will do! God help us when we are a retired couple! : )

  12. I like Friday the 13th too 🙂 But V, can you believe we DON’T have something in common?! I adore even numbers and not so much odd, tee hee.
Mr. Lovee’s things are great. It’d be a funny collection if I picked up 13 random things around my house. We have several needle felted balls that are our current favorite toys, and somehow they’ve made it into our nature bowl by the front door. I guess, technically they are from nature, hahahaha. I just made what was supposed to be a panda, but I ran out of white wool, so I used green and everyone said it looked like a bug, so I added antenna’s. I’ll have to take pictures of him soon to share.
Happy birthday to Mr.’s mom on the other side of the rainbow!
    Jamie 🙂

  13. Linda Pinda says:

    Lovely…
I’m sure Mr. Lovee’s mama is so happy her sweet little boy found someone in this world to love him so much when she was no longer here to do so… what more could a mama ask for?

  14. Theresa says:

I am ALWAYS late! LOL But it is well worth the wait to come and visit. I do not think so much of superstitious dates any longer. But what an interesting thing you did – collecting 13 random objects. And I enjoyed learning a bit more about the mystery who is Mister Lovee! From what I have learned, you are a perfect match. 🙂
    xoxo Theresa
Why can I not think of random things to offer you? Ok – let me give it a whirl…
    1. I am directionally challenged
    2. I do not like elevators
    3. I am allergic to varnish
How was that for SUPER random! 😉

  15. Sarah says:

You did have 13 comments-but I have spoilt that bit of synchronicity by being 14th! I try not to be worried about Friday 13ths-as I think that is what gives them their power-people who are worrying just seem nore likely to have accidents if you ask me! We lived in a number 13 flat for a few years and that didn’t seem to adversely affect anything! I liked your 13 things-and the question you posed. Like you I have such a lot of things of all sorts scattered around that it would be fun to do.
I liked seeing Mr Lovee’s things(and the photos too-and it is sad that you never met his Mum) It is interesting that you both have lots of representations of the human figure.
Oh yes-and my favourite number is 16-I don’t know why but it always has been!
    Have a lovely Sunday! x

  16. kj says:

you can’t fool me, vanessa. this is not a post about doo-dads.
this is a love story. and it was a pleasure and privilege to read!
know what song i have stuck in my head and it seems to be going nowhere fast:
    the wheels on the bus
    go round and round
    round and round
    the wheels on the bus
    go round and round
    ,,,,,,,,
    sigh….
    help….
    love you, vanessa,
    kj

  17. whoa, nelly!

  18. SueAnn says:

I too love Friday the 13th! Just because….! And your Mister Lovee is a treasure and so are you!!! You make my heart light and fill it will song, color and light! How can I not love you!! I will have to gather my 13 things and see what it says about me!!
    Hugging you
    SueAnn

  19. BumbleVee says:

My Mom always used to buy lottery tickets on Friday 13th….she claimed it was a lucky day for witches….and on occasion considered herself one… she definitely was eccentric to say the least…
I like the nubbly turquoise looking vase next to the little fairy…. that’d be something l’d bring home …
hugs to Mr. Lovee…. I know how it feels to be without my Mom…. she’s been gone awhile now….and I still miss her…..
13 things…hmmm… maybe on another Friday 13th, I’ll gather some and do this… although, I will never be able to play with my photos like you do…. so they just won’t look nearly as interesting…..

  20. Ky says:

I love the number 13, too. It was my number when I ran cross country in high school, even! I decided 13 had a lot of luck to give, since no one ever chose it for a lucky number, and decided it should be mine.
It is cracking me up how Mister Lovee is making the same face in all his baby photos. Happy Birthday, Mama Lovee! Thanks for contributing to the creation of this fanciful world we love to come and visit…

  21. rochambeau says:

You and the Mister have a cool pad! It shouts that you appreciate different cultures, art, music and have your own style going on.
    About 13.
I stole my love for the number 9 from my mother. I used to be 7!
Hugs to you, Lovee and the faeries!
    Have a magical Sunday

i really love the way you edit your pictures! they look almost msytical – soft, kind of faded. do you mind me asking what program/s you edit in? how do you achieve this look? i’d really like to know. (and if you don’t want to give up your secret, i totally understand :). my email is kenoly2000@hotmail.com if you would be so kind as to say :). i love your blog!

  23. sadira says:

Well…a very happy birthday to Mama Lovee, I hope you were able to enjoy some cake in her honor (as that is the most perfect excuse for a cake! I envision something with Peaches 😉 )

  24. I didn’t even realize that Friday the 13th went by! I love your little collection of 13 things 🙂 And what interesting pieces Mr. Lovee has! I have had a busy week taking in a starving little stray kitty! You can read about her on my blog if you wish, I know you have a soft heart for the fuzzy creatures too 🙂 Hope you are having a nice and relaxing Sunday! 🙂 ~Lauren

  25. Dear Miss Vanessa
Well…I was thinking about Friday the 13th and how it seemed no one was making a big deal about it…probably the usual Freddie Kuger horror movies on T.V….which I can’t stand to watch, firstly, because they are sooo dumb…hee, hee. Then I saw that YOU blogged about 13 random things in your home…which looks like loads of fun! And I love it now that you are posting 3 random things in your blog as of late. Quite amusing…
And those adorable photos of Mister Lovee! He was so cute! Lucky you! And his own very special room and the music room too.
Yes…we also have a music room, i.e. piano upright Steinway, sitar, guitar, zither, violin, old phonograph…AND we have the he-man room with the juke box, pool table, two pin-ball machines, and the stereo system inside a vintage American oak ice chest where we keep many of the 78 long play rock and roll records. Just lots of fun! And we have other mysterious rooms in our house too full of tea cups and tea pots and whimsical handmade dolls from wonderful doll artists on Etsy and lots and lots of antiques…not the Winchester mansion…but fun enough. We have been collecting for a looooong, looooong, time!
Cheers to you, my dear. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
    Miss Teresa

  26. Bohemian says:

What a lovely love story yours is, not too much is actually ‘random’ is it? It is refreshing to read of a couple who are such Soul Mates and enjoy doing life together like the two of you do. And the mystery of Lovee’s face… so artfully hidden in each photograph makes it even more enchanting. I SO enjoy reading your stories…
    Dawn… The Bohemian

  27. Shell says:

I love Friday the 13th. To me, it’s a lucky day.
One of my good friends, told me to make 13 wishes on Friday the 13th since it’s such a magical day. I did my 13 wishes and open to letting them come true.
I know Mister Lovee must miss his mom..being that today is her birthday gives it’s an extra magic glow.

  28. Linda Diane says:

Ah, Vanessa, so fun to see the random things that sit upon your table tops! I thought I would play this fun game by mentioning some of the OTHER kinds of things that I have lying around, y’know, the kinds you want whisked away when company is coming. (Ha!)Here are my 13 items to share, and they are all on my computer desk!
    1. a machine-squished penny from Madisonville,TX, which proudly proclaims BUC-EE’s with a picture of some beaver-looking face in a hat (souvenir of my husband and son’s trip coastward this weekend to go deep sea fishing!)
    2. a pack of Big Red gum
3.a curling iron to wrap around my sagging curls as I gaze upon the computer screen and enter the world of yummy blogs like yours!! (multi-tasking at its best)
    4. a Cracker Jack prize (They just ain’t what they used to be . . . . *sigh*)
    5. pepper spray (pepper spray???) set down by my hubby
    6. a small plastic real-life-looking Jack Bauer collectible scene in which he is armed and kicking in a door which is bowing inward to the jolt of his manly kicking power (My daughter gifted me with this. She and I heart Jack Bauer.) : D
    7.twist-ties
    8. a previously safety-pinned-to-himself running number my husband wore in his last race (Hubby hearts running. I BLEAH running heehee)
    9. a package of clothespins ready to be decorated by moi
    10.Burt’s Bees lip balm
    11. a peppermint
    12. tossed aside package tape hopelessly twisted and stuck to itself to be of any use
    13. Bath and Body Works pocket-sized Tropical Passionfruit hand sanitizer (smells so yummy, can’t they make that thing into a smoothie flavor???)
Alas, perhaps dear, magical Vanessa cannot relate to such hodge podge-itiness in her environment . . . . Anytime such nonsense as a Big Red package should mar a surface, a splendid fairy must spirit it away and place it gently out of sight in a very organized drawer . . . . : D

  29. Linda Diane says:

Oh, my other post was so long that I felt embarrassed to make it any longer, so I am just going to sneak in this little extra one. I am sending some love to Mr. Lovee as he remembers his dear mom. My hubby’s mom and dad have both passed in the past decade, and we do miss them. I so loved what Linda Pinda wrote, that I hope she won’t mind my posting it again, giving her full credit. She wrote,”I’m sure Mr. Lovee’s mama is so happy her sweet little boy found someone in this world to love him so much when she was no longer here to do so… what more could a mama ask for?” That was just the sweetest!

  30. karen cox says:

    Hi Vanessa,
I was away this weekend, and you know what? I had forgotten that it was Friday the 13th. What a lovely tribute to Mr. Lovee’s mom. You can tell I am not superstitious, I had completely forgotten on my drive up North. I love the comedy scary movies, like Beatlejuice. Nothing too gory of course, but old cute ones are always fun, like the original dracula with bela lugosi, and that cute old one with Gilda Radner and Gene Wilder called The Woman in Red.
Well, I hope you have a wonderful day.
    Karen
