Midnight Baking

We have cake!

It is actually 1:17 a.m. by now, and I have been baking all sorts of goodies this afternoon, and into the night…

A cake 1

Forgive the weird night lighting photos.

I made a carrot cake.

(using this recipe)

Mister loves carrot cake.

Oddly, I had never made a carrot cake before.

I spent the afternoon grating carrots, cleaning up after myself, enjoying step by step.

Making cookies too (for Dad), and getting ready for tomorrow's birthday boy (Lovee).

The frosting on the carrot cake has a bit of orange extract, which tastes very lovely.

(I used half of the orange extract called for in the recipe)

A cake 2

I am not certain I want to frost the cake sides.

Doesn't it look sort of pretty just like this?

I have to tell you….

Your suggestions are so good.

I think a coupon book, and a picnic, sound sublime.

As do so many of your suggestions.

What romantics you are!!

I love it.

I will plan around the sun for certain.

I think it will be 106'F here tomorrow.

Insane.

I threw Lovee a party in that sort of weather a few years ago.

Lovee birthday 2007

Melt city!!

By the by…

I have been awake for 19 hours.

Random tid-bit 😉

But, we have a cake, and that is all that matters for the moment.

Must Sleep.

Thank you for being extra wonderful!!

Love, V

A Sparkly Heart see you soon

ps:  Mister Lovee is very excited about his birthday cake.  And to think, he didn't even want a cake.  I think the thing is, really & truly, there is almost nothing better than your very own birthday cake, on your very own birthday.  Everyone should have their own fave cake, at least once a year.  I realized that.  Cake love!

pss:  I keep forgetting to share some of the things I did to my kitchen cabinets.  Our little island, which is not centered in the kitchen, but in a side nook, got a tiny makeover.  Kilz, paint, wooden decals, sand.  Happy 🙂

Before 5

I only distressed the Island. Not the main kitchen cabinets.  I wanted them to be thick solid cottage white cabinets.  I'll take more photos some time.

After 3

have a hoot with all of your celebrations and i am sure whatever you ‘gift’ your boy he will love it.
    xxrosey

  6. michelle says:

Oh,there is just nothing better than having a great plan for someone important’s birthday! Love the cake, looks so yummy! I think anyone that says they don’t want a fuss on their birthday (or cake!) should be ignored! Sweet dreams!

  7. Wishing Mr. Lovee a most wonderful birthday! I do believe people should be spoiled rotten on their birthdays! This cake should do the trick! You are so sweet to bake it for him. I wish I lived in your house. Baking cakes at 1 am, sounds like a blast to me! Twyla

  8. Linda Diane says:

Miss V., I think anything made with your own two hands shows such love. Effort put forth to make Mr. Lovee’s day special will be felt in his heart. The gift of time will surely be noticed. I know that your homemade carrot cake and whatever else you spend time on for him will make him feel very special.
Your cabinets are beautiful! I was wondering if we would get a peek at them!
    Happy birthday, Mr. Lovee!

  9. Alia says:

Mmmm…I love carrot cake, and that one looks extra yummy! Happy birthday to Mister Lovee! I am sure whatever you do he will love it. I mean look at that party picture. I would just die out of excitedness if someone threw me a party that cute, even with meltyness! It has been quite warm here, but I don’t mind since it just gives me an excuse to go to the pool and swim! Good luck with your birthday madness.
    Alia
ps. I am not on the Mad Tea Party list even though I did a post with the flyer and all. Maybe I forgot to comment on your post? Anyway when you get a chance could you maybe add me pretty please?

  10. Holly says:

Happy Happy Birthday! I have to say that everything you do is simply dreamy! This is my favorite “escape” blog….I come here when I need to escape my crazy life. Thanks!

  11. Oooh that cake looks some kinda yummy! Don’t frost the sides!

  12. Lynn says:

    Happy Birthday to Mr Lovee!
    The cake looks especially yummy.
Love the cupboards, you’ve got me eyeing my kitchen now.

  13. Kim says:

    Vanessa:
OMG!! (and I never say OMG), how in the world did I miss these last two posts? Not only is it Mr. Lovee’s birthday, but you posted a photo of his ENTIRE face! OMG!!
The carrot cake looks devine. I love the sides showing…it looks rustic and handmade.
How is it that you manage to make and eat so many delicious sweets and keep your tiny, girlish figure under control? I think you truly are magical!
Happy Birthday to Mr. Lovee and your dad!

  14. Renee says:

Happy birthday to the birthday Mr.
I love carrot cake. One of my faves. With cream cheese frosting everywhere:)

  15. Miss Kim, I dont really adore sweets that much. I will have a
nibble, but not much. Of course I make up for it with real food 😉
And, trust me, I am not blessed with the gift of no pudge 😉

  16. Carl V. says:

Happy Birthday wishes to him! The cake looks great. With the sides not frosted it looks like a giant cookie with icing in the middle. And of course now I am hungry.
I went to bed about the same time you were working on this post. I finally flamed out after the Fellowship of the Ring event and am feeling the effects of the late night today. It truly seems like just yesterday when I could bounce right up after late nights and feel no effects at all. Those days are gone!
Hope the birthday celebrations are lovely and romantic, despite the heat.

  17. Can I have a slice or two to celebrate along with you and Mr. Lovee, too? 😉 Looks super yummy. I love sweets and it shows. ha!
😀 I should just go make a cake just for fun and when my husband and daughters ask why, I’ll say, “It’s Mr. Lovee’s birthday, sillies.”

  18. Shell says:

Wishing Mr. Lovee, a Happy Birthday. That cake looks delicious..I be excited about having that cake on my birthday as well.

  19. What a delicious looking cake! I agree, no frosting on the sides, it looks perfect as is!
Sending very Happy Birthday wishes to the handsome Mr Lovee! (And hoping you didn’t get in too much trouble for posing his pic, hehe)
    🖤 Carolee

  20. kayellen says:

Love the cabinets and that cake looks soooo yummy too!
Some times late creativity is the best
I hope you get some rest Miss V!!

  21. GG Pinkster says:

    Oh my golly gee,
A birthday cake for Mr. Lovee!
1900 and fifty 10, carrots spinning on end.
A moment to whisper in the breeze..
“See the flowers dancing so free..”
Yet out is in and the party is about.
    . Lights twinkling almost a spout .
And there in a wee tree a little light speck is singing….
    Mrrrr. Loveeeee…Happy Birthdeeeee
Lovee + Dovee = cake lovey yummy
Cheers and Blessings on your Year-

  22. Mo'a says:

Happy Belated Birthday to very handsome Mr. Lovee!
It is so nice to see that your magic world is safe. I have been thinking about you a lot lately.
I have sad news to tell you, Mr. Hatter (my Dad) passed away on the 25th of May at the age of 96. He often talked about the Mad Tea Party…he loved looking at your site and all the other party sites.

  23. Theresa says:

Mr. Lovely has great taste! I LOVE carrot cake, too. 🙂 Want to know a time saver for “grating” carrots. I roughly chop them into a few medium size chunks and then toss them into the food processor. Works like a charm. 🙂
You are right – everyone does deserve their most favorite cake (or pie) on their birthday. 🙂 Mine would be anything involving chocolate! hee hee hee Sorry it has been SOOO hot there – hope you have some AC. 🙂 Your kitchen cabinets, by the way, are looking divine.
Please get some sleep, dear friend! And have a most wonderful weekend! xoxo Theresa

  24. Miss Theresa, I thought about the food processor, but then I just did it by
hand, you know how sometimes you are in that sort of slow Zen cooking
mode? My Mom is currently baking my dad the most outrageous chocolate
cake. Well fly you a piece via dream waves 😉
