It’s that lovely time again.
A birthday for a certain Mister Lovee…
There is such a special air about making a homemade birthday cake, isn’t there?
I adore the feeling of having a free afternoon to bake something with love.
Sifting sugar.
Listening to the machine whip butter.
The radio playing a tune in the background.
Pups wandering in to see what I am doing.
Checking on batter and frosting…
Watching smooth perfection happen…
As the music plays, and the oven warms, I see Miles out of the corner of my eye.
He’s playing.
He LOVES toys.
He always has a toy with him.
He has inside toys and outside toys.
In the garden is a pile of his outside toys – some bones, some rope chews, some balls.
All placed in one place by him.
I almost shed a tear I am so touched when I see his little playground where he keeps all his treasures.
Inside he has some fluffy toys.
Which he rips apart.
And is then gifted new ones.
Matty plays tug of war with him sometimes.
But mostly, Matty thinks Miles is still a silly puppy, I think.
My big beautiful puppy.
I love those boys so.
(Miles has a super deep bark, like Barry White would if he was a dog. He makes big deep lion growl sounds when he spots somethig to chase, or a car. And he also has a banshee howl that is all out of tune and high pitched, isn’t that funny?)
Miles looks up at me when I say it’s time to color our frosting.
For a second I think he understands me perfectly.
(Matty opens the door and leaves to bark at something outside)
I think about what color to make the cake.
I choose a sort of seafoam green.
One of both mine and mister’s fave colors.
A little blue, a little yellow…
Then it is time for frosting the cake.
I made a lemon cake, with lemon zest grated in.
Two layer.
The center filled with raspberry cream.
I used raspberry preserves to make the filling, so there are tiny seeds to accompany the lemon zest.
Fresh, summery.
Frosted.
I am not a pro froster, obviously.
🙂
But I try…
The cake is done.
Nap time for some.
Into the refrigerator, while we get ready to surprise the birthday boy-man.
A homemade cake from the heart.
(I am calling this cake, the green monster, tee hee)
Yes sirree.
I hope it’s tasty.
Happy Birthday Lovee!!!
Now to come up with some more plans for the event.
By the way, I love your thank you ideas for the cottage.
Brilliant!
I am going to take them all and meld something up.
In the moment, I am trying to invent some birthday fun too.
I wish I could hire a clown and call it a day.
Why doesn’t anyone like clowns these days I wonder?
Do you know?
Okay, time to blow up balloons!!
No one is ever too old for a proper birthday party.
No way Jose.
Or even a very merry un-birthday party.
I think you need one of those soon, don’t you?
Today is a lovely day!
Love, V

A very Happy Birthday to Mr. Lovee! Your cake looks delicious, Vanessa, and I love that color icing.
Tell Mr. Lovee the Rooster wishes him happiness, light and love xoxoxox
Happy Happy Birthday to your Mister Lovee.
I know he appreciates all the care and love and personal thought you put into this celebration.
I learned a frosting trick on the tv show The Chew.
Do a quick light frosting, then set aside in a cool spot for a half hour. That layer picks up all the crumbs and fills in the holes. Once that has set, take it out and frost as desired. Your frosting will be smooth and flawless.
I’m waiting for your summer tea party My Dear.I hope you are still planning one or did I miss it ?You give such lovely parties no matter what the reason 🙂 Greetings from Coffeeberry Cottage-Denise
Oh yes, the crumb stage!! My friend Rosie at Sweetapolita.Com
always talks about this! ;)))
Must pay attention ;)))
Brilliant, thanks for the reminder!!

Oh HapPy HaPpY BirthDaY Mister LOVEE!! Vanessa, what a yummy concoction of a cake you have created. Me thinks today is a day for “c” words, don’t you? Yes, I thought you might concur (is that how its spelled?) “-). As for clowns, I find them to be very clumsy, convoluted, and down right SCARY!! Clowns do not like me and I don’t like them. Have you ever had to go to sleep at night with a clown staring down at you?? CREEPY!
OK enough with the clowns…I heard something about a cottage and since I’ve been up to my elbows in paint this week I’ve missed a few posts, but I must fiind out more about this cottage you spoke of so…off I go.
Much love to you
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. LOVEE! I hope you are having a wonderful day so far and I’m sure you enjoyed Vanessa’s cake–it certainly looked delicious! Why must you torture us with your delightful looking creations, Vanessa?? WHY????? Haha 😀
You just gave me the inspiration I needed to create another painting 🙂 Thanks so much and I hope you have a lovely, carefree day. xx
P.S. I am seriously considering that un-birthday cake you suggested….:D
Vanessa, your monster Cake looks so CooooL and very HaPpy!
Wishing Mr. Lovee a Very Happy Birthday and I’m sure of fun surprises from his Fanciful Gal!
The boys look content and ready for all the festivities you are a brewing! EnJoy!!!<3

Ok sooo that was not what I wanted to happen!!! Opps, Sorry for the repeat!
Go with the 1st entry! ; )
Wishing Mister Lovee the Happiest of Happy Birthdays, Ever!!!
OOooooo such a beeeeutiful cakey. Please excuse the drool.
Bad Alice does not like clowns. She is frightened to death of them. This fear is deep seated in her childhood, and intensified during the teen years when The Soldier would put on his psycho clown outfit, sneak into Bad Alice’s room in the dark, and whisper in a high pitched voice, Bobo’s in your room.
Happy Happy Happy Mister Lovee Day!
**blows gentle kisses to not blow out the candles** Deb
Happy Happy Birthday Mister Lovee!!

Happy Birthday to the Mister!!!!! I hope it’s a great one and enjoy the cake!!!!!
Speaking of clowns…I’ve found a website where you can rent an evil clown to follow around the birthday boy/girl the week prior to their birthday. They don’t talk or interact with them…they just show up and walk past them at the grocery store, gas station, etc. My brother is terrified of clowns~~~~~~ I. Can’t. Wait.
A VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY BIRTHDAY TO MISTER LOVEE. AND A VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU MISS VANESSA.
Happy birthday to youuuuuuuuu, wonderful Mr. Lovee who took a gal’s dream and made it into an enchanted cottage!
Vanessa, that cake looks yummy, and it was made with love, and I know Mr. Lovee will lovee it!
When both of my little fur boys get stuffed animals, their one goal is to get to that stuffing and yank it out bit by delicious bit!
Have a great celebratory weekend. : )
Happy Birthday Mr. Lovee. Beautiful cake and your frosting is beautiful. Sounds like a yummy cake.
I loved your story about Miles and his little pile of toys. I have no dogs to call my own but I’m a nannie to my daughter’s dogs. Stormin’ Norman used to bark at me but now he just patiently brings a ball and wait for me to throw it for him. His momma Cassie waits to be scratched. Funny how dogs can accept you into the family like that.
I don’t dislike all clowns, but a certain clown called Pennywise from Stephen King’s IT makes me think some clowns are purely evil.:)
Have a great birthday celebration.
I forgot to mention-I requested a Kitchen Aid mixer for Christmas a few years ago. One of my best presents. I love using it. I’ve not been baking much lately-too hot and I usually make cakes if we are having company or I’m taking it to work.
Vanessa, this is a beautiful blog post, as always! Thank you so much! You have brought me many hours or pleasure and dreaming! A question: Where did you get the seafoam green food coloring to use in your georgeous frosting? Thank you again!
What a heavenly cake Vanessa, lemon and raspberry such a glorious combination. I love citrus summer cakes, a lavender and lime one I made recently on my blog went down a treat.
A very Happy Birthday to Mister Lovee, have a wonderful day both of you!
P.S. Are you planning on making any more wee elves soon? I have been dying to get my hands on one of your lovely creations, but I’m always too slow! Those little guys sell like hotcakes! (Which is great, of course).
Haha just a sidenote, I actually had a dream that I was going to make a lemon cake for Father’s Day because of this post! At first, in the dream I was going to make chocolate cake, but then, somehow I remembered this post and wanted to make lemon cake instead.
Okay, sorry, I got sidetracked. Anyway, I was just wondering about the elves! Thx 🙂 xx
LOVE the looks of Mr. Lovee’s Birthday cake!!! That’s my fave color too!! Could YOU send me one in November?!! tee heee hee Hope Mr. Lovee had a Happy Birthday!! How could he not with the SWEET companions he has chosen?!!Bow WOW!!!
Happy birthday Mr. Lovee! And beautiful sea-foam green cake. One of the bestest colours. And adorable pooped pup as well. It’s so hot here I’ve got a little pup lying on the floor at my feet as I type these. She’s not happy about the heat.
Happy Birthday to Mr. Lovee! The cake looks scrumptious and the frosting color is so divine.
Oh! And you have a vintage cake holder/saver just like my mom used to have! Exactly like it!
I will have to try sifting my powdered sugar next time I make frosting…I forgot all about doing that. It’s hot here too…about 98 degrees.
hugs,
Miss Teresa
=^..^=
Almost time for the Cheshire Cat to be coming out for the tea party!
I hope Mr. Lovee had an AMAZING birthday!!!! You are right – there is nothing like baking a cake (or cupcakes!) from scratch. I adore baking. 🙂 I actually made two batches of cupcakes for tomorrow’s Father’s Day gathering. I see you had a most adorable kitchen helper. 🙂 Many people are afraid of clowns – I never was. Maybe we can blame Stephen King for this! Have a great Sunday! xoxo
Happy Birthday Mister Lovee! And may the year ahead be your best one yet!
You did a lovely job on the cake, Vanessa! Lemon and raspberry, what a nice combo! And the frosting is beautiful! I love that color too! 😉
Happy Birthday to Mister Lovee!
Hope he enjoyed his day and the beautiful yummy cake!
No more talk of clowns though, your giving me the heebie jeebies *shudders* scary things clowns are!
No one likes crowns because they’re creepy, V.
Tell Lovee happy birthday from us. Belatedly, please.
Violet keeps asking to see this post over and over again. She says, “Is my fairy godmuffer Finessa making me a cake? Is she? She’s a nice lady. She really knows how to make a cake. She uses flour and everything.”
Happy Birthday to your wonderful Mr. Lovee!!! He’s a special guy indeed. ^_^
Hope you two had a wonderful day, with or without the clown. Perhaps next year you could dress up? Or perhaps Miles would make a cute clown… =D
