Of Halloween Stars & Cozy Autumn Fireplace

Cozy October is the most wonderful time!

Halloween mantel 1

I am here trying to enjoy every morsel.

Apple crisps on repeat, watching the glorious moon, and doing some delightful crafts.

Halloween mantel 7

I’ve been making star garlands for years, but I didn’t have a large one for the super tall mantel.

I put on some scary movies and just drew stars onto cardboard, cut them out, painted them in kid craft glue and dunked them in glitter.

A truly enjoyable time.

Halloween mantel 18

I don’t know why stars are so magically fun to make and hang, but they just are.

Halloween mantel 6

And they are perfect for Halloween and Christmas.

Halloween mantel 8

My little guy is finally being treated with the love he deserves.

I got him in 2001 I think, for a party, and then left him outside for years and years.

Until he was aged to absolute perfection.

Halloween mantel 10

Boy is he ever.

So well-aged, that I may have to seal him so pieces of him don’t keep falling off.

Halloween mantel 4

I was in the mood for a calm and cozy Halloween vibe this year.

I didn’t go super crazy and I’m really enjoying the overall feel of it.

Halloween mantel 16

I had ordered the moon and star pumpkins form somewhere this summer, if only I could remember where?

I loved them in orange, but I kept envisioning them in pink with glitter accents.

So, I painted them in acrylic craft paint, and I really love them now.

I added some light brown staining, which isn’t overtly obvious, but made them have a little more depth of color.

Halloween mantel 9

All the twinkle lights and spooky magic of the season is just my most favorite.

Halloween mantel 15

I’ve really been drinking in the wonders of October.

Halloween mantel 11

Fireplace, tea in the dark, with only the candles and twinkle lights illuminating.

Absolutely the best.

Halloween mantel 12

I brought out a few of my favorite books.

I’ve never used the witchcraft book, but I got it in the creepiest little hole in the wall bookstore when I was in my 20’s.

I just adored going into that bookstore.

There was a little chair in the way back corner, with twinkle lights and paper ships hanging from the ceiling.

I thought it was the most magical place I had ever been in, surrounded by the scent of old books.

It’s long gone now, but I love the vivid memories I have of it.

Halloween mantel 14

I had a wonderful weekend at the country house, reading ghost stories and making ML some rice krispy treats.

Of course, tending my gardens a lot, and Halloweenifying gypsy wagons.

I have all my supplies ready for my mom’s caramel corn, next on the menu for this coming weekend.

Halloween mantel 2

If only this deliciously magical month could slow down a little.

I love it too much, I can’t get enough.

Halloween mantel 13

The weather is sublime, the garden is in a second spring.

There is so much relief from the hot summer.

The sky is stunning at night.

Please don’t go so quickly Octoberrrrr!

Halloween mantel 5

I hope you are having a delightful month as well.

I have so many harvests happening.

I’ve never had such huge endless tomatoes.

I am convinced it was all the rain this summer that got them to set so much fruit.

The flavor of them, just incredible.

I’m bringing in huge baskets full daily.

I normally despise tomatoes, but when I grow them myself, I do enjoy them.

I have made salsas, and pomodoro, and salads aplenty.

Oh and, tomato tarts too.

There are soooo many chilies, and still zucchini and pumpkins.

I have yet to roast my first pumpkin of the season, have you?

I’ve also been working on clay sculptures, but it seems I hardly have time in my life these days.

My day begins, and I am busy busy, and then it is over in the blink of an eye.

I remember when I was a child and days were soooo long.

I know that scientifically time goes faster as you get older, but this is just nonsense 🙂

You’ll have to fill me in on all the wonderful things you are getting up to this month.

What are your favorite must-do’s in October?

It’s definitely time to bake some pumpkin bread.

I just realized I have not had anything pumpkin flavored this month yet.

I must get on that tomorrow.

I hope you are doing just lovely in your neck of the woods, and I hope to see you soon!

Lots of love from me to you!

Happy pumpkin times!

Love, Vanessa

Dearest Magical Veevalalala, of course kindred spirits unite in feelings and flavors come Hallow’s Eve season. It is a paradox – time goes slow when you were a kid but fast as an adult UNLESS it is summertime and you’re just over the heat and it goes creeeeeeeeeping along hahaha! But then: at last, the cool air every morning and not-as-crazy-humidity arrives and all of the goodness that is in the air come fall! Um okay first: that skelly is beyond <3 I love him and the fact that he has come in from the elements to perch upon the coziest of pillow and chair, and can now gaze at you gazing at him in twinkling lights! He's the perfect amount of spooky. And I am thinking how funny it is that I have tied a ribbon around Crazy Larry (my owl's) neck (if you can call it that on an owl? Do they have necks? ha) And there's his cousins all the way in Bizarre with the same celebratory accessory! But really the piece de resistance are the stars - they really do twinkle! Glorious!!! Now, let's get out that witch's book and see if there is a spell to slow October down. (The book shop sounds dreamy....nothing better than a book shop...sigh...) I cannot believe we are in double digit days already and I too have a stack of books *and* recipes to boot and I have not made a dent yet, not to mention there may be a corner or two of the house that could stand with some haunting up! 🙂 Enchanting chants and mystical hugs to you and your loves too! xoxoxviixoxoroostah

Thank you! I’m so enjoying October through your posts this year as we are busy traveling here and there getting children settled in new digs in Manhattan and DC so much of October is slipping away too quickly! And at a wedding in Sarasota this weekend so love love love looking at your cozy sparkly beautiful photos. I missed the star cutout how to in your stories but they are spectacular! And thank you for the pumpkin tip-so wonderful in pink and glitter! And clay sculptures?! Oh I cannot wait! I hope for some little ghosties with star and such!!!!!
The rain has been amazing for you! Happy haunting!!!

Love it all, but those glitter stars are so magical.
No pumpkin bread yet, but beginning to think about it.
SMall apple tartlets will be in the oven soon.

    Good Morning
I love the star garlands* I have made the glitter stars and also just love them so much. October is also a favorite month of mine. I love the coolness in the air. I made Pumpkin Chocolate chip cookies yesterday for my girls. I should make something apple. I also remember as a child that the days were so long. Each night I go to bed I think, wait it was just last night, the days go so so fast. Love seeing how much you enjoy them. You sure do live a dreamy life Vanessa

You have come and gone and come back again into my life. October is definitely the month that I usually always check in with your posts. You have such a way with October! I will savor your photos and stories. I too have that very same book, also purchased in my 20s! A longer time ago for me than you. I actually have a whole bookcase full and I vow to get into them practically one of these days. Just wrote a song called Everyday Magic! Because there is magic in everyday, don’t you think??I need to pull out my tin of stars that you inspired me to make many, many years ago. Been into leaf decorating lately, all over the place. Cheers, Karen

  10. Michele says:

I absolutely must make some glitter stars! It sounds like such a wonderful project. I agree that October is going much faster than I would like-and my tomato harvest this year was amazing as well. I do love growing them myself-that and lettuce. There is something beautiful about going out in the evening and harvesting greens to make a salad right then. I just love it and have planted a second going of lettuce which we are enjoying now. I have beans going again too but not sure they will produce before the frost comes. Wishing you a lovely October.

  11. Your moon and stars pumpkins are so cute, and I do adore the glitter stars garland! I noticed you have Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen on your mantel. It’s one of my favorite books, and she’s one of my favorite writers. We just read her latest novel “Other Birds,” and all our book club members loved it!
I must make apple cider donuts and visit a fall festival or two during October, and I’ve done both. 😀
    XO,
    Ricki Jill
