Calgon Take me Away! + Magazine Winner

Hi there!!

Where have I been?

I've been here, there and everywhere.

Spinning busy as ever.

Busier than ever.

Mad lady.

I hardly have had time to breathe or sleep.

My brother is here from LA.

(I went to see The Conjuring with sister and brother, eeee!)

Mombie and Dad were in town for Mombies lovely b-day.

We went into town to celebrate with them.

Got dolled up.

Darn, that takes time, I forgot.

The peaches kept coming in in droves.

Freezing, preserving, canning, baking baking baking.

Picking.

Making pot after pot of midnight jam.

Jam from here til winter for sure.

I made hundreds of peach empanadas (Mexican pastry), boxed as gifts.

And dispersed.

The cicadas flew in to gobble peaches, haha, we were on to them.

Acreage needed mowing.

(I am the mower, I love mowing even though it's pass out hot)

Peaches needing slicing, hundreds and hundreds oh my!

More than hundreds.

I had a deadline.  Details, photos, wonderful work, love it! Working away with that.

Mowing by night, and early day light.

Trees needed trimming.

Tending + harvesting.

More and more veggies coming in.

Washing, chopping, refrigerating.

Eating.

Custom pendant, custom sculpting.

Can I please put my feet up for a second?

Foot rest

Just a second though, as I have a lattice peach pie in the oven.

I want to give it to the couple at the end of the lane.

It is mad busy round here, isn't it?

Mombie says, and you don't even have kids.

And I said, well, if I had kids I wouldn't be doing all of that.

Would I?

Wait, I do have two kids.

Furry.

Does the older curly haired man count too?  Umm, yes.

He counts as 4 screaming children me thinks 😉

The good news is, it's time to wind down a bit.

Although, the mess that is my house, oh!

Wanna help me clean it?

How about some random photos of where I have been?

Let's see…

I went to an old hotel.

Lovely lanterns and stars hanging everywhere…

Dinner 9

There were cocktails in a curiously shaped room with interesting edging, and a slice of Mombie's face.

Dinner 8

A treasure in Tucson.

The Arizona Inn.

Go there, it's awesome.

Dinner 7

Beautiful desert.

I love the desert so much.

Dinner 3

Of course, I went up winding staircases and found little doors, with creepy squeaks and faint laughter.

I swear.

Dinner 5

I had tea for dessert.

Move dad, I am trying to take a picture here 🙂

(Poor Dadly)

Dinner 11

My sister and brother said it was The Conjuring armoire and scary lady would come out.

Darn that Bathsheba witch, scared me crazy.

I repeated her name in my sleep all night after the movie.

Serves me right.

Lovee wore bee stripes to dinner.

We love bees.

Save the beeees!

I wanted the kumquat trees in big pots.

Dinner 4

We laughed so hard we nearly died.

Laughter upon laughter when you get my family together.

Oh my!

We are just so wrong.

Laugh so hard your head and stomach hurt.

It's no wonder they didn't kick us out, with their fancy 7 courses of perfect bites.

So yumm.

Duck, and scallops, and lamb, and salmon, and vichyssoise – and who knows what else we ate.

Asparagus, tiny edamame scattered across the plate with carrots, like art.

And the desserts.

OH MY!

True art on a plate.

I just looked.

As you know, I really have to be in the mood for dessert.

Lemon water to rinse your hands after dinner.

Nice get away for a girl who runs around with mud feet and unruly hair these days.

But wait, I forgot the wine and cocktails.

Lovee and I had water, how boring we are.

But we both feel rotten if we drink.

Although, we did share a thimble full of Six Grapes port last week.

(it's excellent by the way, I keep it around for guests)

Dinner 1

There were paintings whose eyes followed you around.

And libraries.

Such old novels, the oldest locked up.

Dinner 2

We snooped, and got into all sorts of shenanigans, sis and I.

(sis below, aka Bobbypin Bandit)

Dinner 13

My brother and I pretended we were in The Shining movie.

Dinner 12

We strolled after dinner…

As Mombie sat in front of the giant fireplace.

(that's her foot and arm)

We'll be back in winter when the fire can be lit, we agreed.

(Mombie is hipper than I could ever hope to be)

Dinner 10

Mombie and Dadley stayed in the piano bar requesting songs from the pianist.

Dinner 6

And I rushed home to finish my work.

If you go watch The Conjuring, take a sweater or poncho to cover your face/eyes with.

I did.

It wasn't soooo scary, but maybe I had already scared myself enough before watching it.

Plus I had been listening to all sorts of interviews Andrea Perron was doing.

So, I was prepared, a little.

It was really creepy/unsettling middle to end.

But, what would I know, I covered my face 🙂

OH oh, almost forgot…

Magazine winner per random number generator is…

Yipppee, please e-mail me your snail mail addy.

  1. DogsMom says:

Congratulations to Ms Lavender Dreams! (Is it Diane?)

  2. Misha/DawaiOser says:

I’ve been wanting to see that movie, “The Conjuring”. My friends who LOVE horror films gave it excellent reviews and said it’s scary but not too gory — which is great for a baby like me…lol.

  3. Theresa says:

Hi Vanessa! Have missed you much!!!!! What a fun post – I enjoyed reading it and catching up with what you’ve been up to. How busy you’ve been! I’ve never had a sweet empanada – I’d love to try a peach one. Bet they are delicious – like a little mini pie! And who doesn’t love their own pie, I tell you? Can I share a secret – I do not like overly scary movies. It’s weird because I love vampire movies, but I cannot watch horror films. Although I did love The Sixth Sense and The Others. I’m such a nut. Hope you and the babies were well, and have a fabulous weekend!

  4. Yes…it’s Diane! heehee! I am SO thrilled my friend! I’ll email you right away! YIPEEEE!!! I’ve loved seeing your amazing photos of this beautiful place! I was reading right along…I didn’t even skip to the end to see who won! Sweet hugs!!!

  5. Carmen says:

I loved your post about the Arizona Inn… it’s gorgeous! I love Tucson so much – spent so many vacations there when I was little. It’s the most beautiful desert… One of these days, I must stay there. 🙂

  6. Looks like you have had some fun adventures, with your family, and at home too, goodness all those delicious peach nibbles sound divine. Everything looks so pretty. I would love to spend some time in Arizona, maybe in the winter, as I think the heat would do me in. Thank You for sharing, I enjoyed reading your post 🙂

  7. Wow! What an awesome inn in which to celebrate your Mombie’s b-day. A most excellent excuse for dolling up! I wish I had half the energy you had. I have apples languishing on two apples trees…I should be baking apple pies and freezing them. I need to clone myself to get things done around here. We hardly had any plums or apricots this year but tons of apples! The weather is so hot, the apples are shriveling on the trees making shriveled apple faces! (Not really!) But I do remember the carved apple faces people used to make with a fresh apple and let them shrivel into an old looking face.
It was lovely you had a party break with family. Our family gets carried away laughing our sides off too when we all get together, and people look at us and wonder what is so funny, as sometimes it is those little private family jokes and memories that sets us off laughing.
I know I went to some antique stores in Tucson several years ago…it’s an awesome city.
    hugs,
    Miss Teresa

  8. I love that hacienda-gone-oriental style of the porch with the lanterns. Beautiful.

  9. Queenie says:

It looks like Mombie had a wonderful birthday celebration. I was at that Tucson hotel years ago. It is a beautiful gem… celebration of the southwest!
    Have a great day.
    Always, Queenie

  10. laura says:

Congrats to the magazine winner. I found a copy of it at my local b&n and picked it up the other day. Still haven’t had time to look at it though. I so want to see the Conjuring! hopefully next week. maybe…
    love & blessings

  11. Deborah Fry says:

LOL you are so funny busy! The restaurant is gorgeous and Happy Birthday Mombie! 🙂 I wish I had half of your energy girlie. Good luck with the rest of the harvest.
    hugs and smoochies,
    Deb

  12. Melanie says:

Whoa! You’re a busy gal, Vanessa! Lovely celebration for your Mombie’s birthday.
She must have had a blast. I loved the picture you shared with us some time ago of when she was younger. Youthful and playful. The years march on, so we must enjoy every bit of it. You seem to be doing just that!

  13. Marilyn says:

It sounds like a busy, happiness time for you.
Laughing also is good for the soul. I should come and
visit you and laugh awhile. Oh to have so many peaches,
how I would love that. Peach empandadas in the freezer for winter.

  14. You are still so much fun to read and peek at ; ) Love goes out to You-Denise

  15. Renee says:

Sounds like a great time with your family. Happy Birthday to you mother.
Love the pictures. Any place with books has to be wonderful.
You sound so busy with the peaches.
Congrats to the give away winner. 🙂

  16. Fun, fun, fun. You had me glued to every word from beginning to end. Loved every bit. Congrats to my friend, Diane.
    xoxo’s

  17. Marjorie says:

Oh it looks like much fun was had by all!! What a splendid place!!

  18. Alia says:

I want to see that movie, but I get scared so easily! I mean while I am watching things they are fun scary, but then later they get into my brain and I can’t sleep. Maybe I better not see this one after all, or at least wait for dvd. Things are always a bit less scary when the picture is smaller and the sound not as loud!

  19. How did I miss this? I’ve been off the computer lately. You know how that goes. That movie sounds terrifying. I want more photos of your family gathering! That place is gorgeous.

  20. Sharleen Parker says:

Gorgeous pictures, so glad you all had such a wonderful time for your dear Mombie’s birthday! <3
